PASTA if you travel use the drawstring bags to hold your shoes. Use one bag per shoe and wrap your shoe in a polishing cloth before putting in the bag. The bag will keep your shoes from touching your other clothing as well as keep the shoes from touching or rubbing each other and getting scuffed.

I don't know of any half that gives away other premiums besides medals. I am just doing my first and honestly I don't care what they give or don't give - I know I finished the darn race emoticon

Timothy, Your story (about lack of any finisher premium at the TTC HM last year) supports my standard advice: Never do an HM when there is a marathon at the same event because HM runners will always get treated as 2nd class citizens. Only do an HM where it is the featured event.

Sorry, guess I was wrong. I thought it was a normal one. I felt like the people at the booth were working way too hard to get you to sign up for the race also. Races around here typically sell out so I was wondering why the hard sell.
Tomorrow's half looks like rain. ugh! I am thankful it's not sunny and in the upper 80's though.

It's not the HM you asked about but the Marathon du Medoc in France gives out a bottle of wine to the racers emoticon emoticon

Apparently there are also wine tastings and gourmet food items along the course as well.

Needless to say this is more of a fun run than a serious time qualifier marathon! According to the site over 90% of runners dress in costume...each year there is a theme to the race. It is located in the Bordeaux region on the west coast of France.

I have been considering this for my first marathon since I sat out Paris last month due to knee concerns. There is a 6.5 hour time limit plus it sounds pretty fun.

France - EST + 6 hours

Stitcher, Where are you getting your info from? The WWHM website and facebook page clearly show drawstring-style bags for 2013.

According to several race reports I read, they gave out medals in 2012.

Actually they had the backpacks there and they weren't the cheap drawstring ones. It was a regular backpack. FYI

I've lost my Polar watch for the second time. It just keeps disappearing! So I've decided that I'll just be a Zen runner instead. emoticon

Good Luck on your search Pastafarian! emoticon

How many watches does one need? Right now? Two. I can't find my fracking Garmin. Grrrr.

I got a coffee cup for the Trail Triple Crown in Newark DE last year. Only the marathoners got medals. None for the half, none for the triple crown (Half, 10k, 5k). All trail races. Kind of a rip.

Ugh. Those "backpacks" being given out for the Woodrow Wilson are cheap junk. ($1/bag in quantity.) Those are called "drawstring bags" in the industry and many companies give them away as promotional freebies. Needless to say, I've got several laying around the house somewhere and don't need any more. One day I will figure out a use for them. :-P

The Woodrow Wilson HM is giving out backpacks this year. I was just at the expo for the Historic Half in Fredericksburg and I think the Diva one is giving out tiara's. emoticon

It was a pricey HM though at $90

Are you sure about those pint glasses? I'm looking at the web site for the Wolf Hollow HM right now and it says pint glasses only for AG and overall winners.

I don't know about the other Zooma races, but the one here in Texas gives out custom made necklaces for finishing. I have two of them. They're made by Satya Jewelry.

As I plan out my HMs for the rest of the year, I'm thinking I've collected enough medals and wouldn't mind something more practical. Can anyone recommend good HMs that give finisher premiums that are NOT medals? That aren't expected to be worn around your neck?

Don't tell me about medals that spin, open bottles, etc. unless it really IS a bottle opener and not a medal. I guess the way to know for sure is - do you keep it with all your medals or not. (If you keep it in the kitchen drawer with your corkscrew, then it's a bottle opener, not a medal!)

The only HM that I know of (and like) is the Parks Half Marathon which has given out winter hats for the last few years - but at this point I have enough winter hats! I figure there must be other HMs which give out finisher premiums you can actually use.

Hmm, I guess I'll also mention the Annapolis 10 Miler because it is popular with the HMers - the distance makes it an ideal race to do during HM training. ATM traditionally gives out clothing but this year are giving Timex Ironman watches as finisher premiums. I'm kinda torn on this myself because I figure most people already have watches (many have better watches!) and after all, how many running watches does one need?
