While out cross training for my upcoming half I was going down the road and I spied a couple of dear. A mother and a fawn. now normally if you come upon a dear they turn and run the other way however they must have been curious as to what I was on my bicycle. The fawn literally came up and almost touched me,the mother stayed back about 3 feet. A car was coming up and Tried to scare them away but they just kept looking at me like I was this crazy creature. Later that day I was telling my son this story and he said MOM!! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH WILD ANIMALS! as I tried to defend myself he just kept yelling NO MOM YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED PERIOD!! who's the parent anyway?!?

On Sunday, while running with my wife, we ran past one brake pad lying in the road. How, exactly, someone's car lost one brake pad in the middle of the road (without also losing a tire and/or an axle) is beyond me. I hope they made it home in one piece!

That's why you should always run with a buddy. Preferably someone slower. Because then you don't have to outrun the bear...

A black bear. With a cub no less! Scared the living bejesus out of me.

I was vactioning in northern wisconsin, running down a trail when about 100 yards or so ahead of me, i saw something moving around in the brush off the side of the road. A dark figure appeared, so i stopped running to get a better look and sure enuf, it was a dang bear. So i'm looking at this thing kinda frozen like "oh crap now what do i do?" and i remember hearing that you aren't supposed to run. So i turned around really slow and started tip-towing away... which was totally pointless because the thing was looking right at me. So i'm half running trying to look over my shoulder making sure the thing wasn't going to charge me, and i see its cub come out of the brush too.... so now i'm really REALLY scared because i know bears with cubs are like, extra dangerous. So i figure i'm pretty much screwed becuase there's no way i'm going to outrun this thing. I was doing uphill sprints right before that, and even with the fight or flight omg i'm going to die adrenaline pumping, i still was feeling pretty whopped. And besides that- even if i was fully juiced, bears are really fast. Like if a bear and a Kenyan went head to head, i'd put my money on the bear.

Anyways. Obviously the thing never got me, so that's good. After that i kept my run limited to the moring hours. I heard bears arent big breakfast eaters and also that they like to sleep in. Which i figured would dramatically lessen my odds of gettting chomped. But that was scary. And hopefully the weirdest things i'll ever see on a run.

One baby's shoe by itself in the middle of the running path. Bummer for some mommy. Then at the end of my run I caught sight of something on my lower leg, so I took a double take. The was a trial of blood from my left knee, down my shin to my sock. I did not fall and forget. There is a waist high cement wall with a narrow split in it. I remember scraping my knee as I passed through. I had no idea that it drew blood. This happened at about mile 4 of my 12.5 mile run. No wonder people were looking at me running. I thought it was my good running form. emoticon

It just figures that the beach would be where I spotted some of the stranger sights!

A decorative well in someone's front yard with a LIFE SIZED stuffed black bear peeking out of the top. (I'll post a pic in my sparkpage)

Instead of shoes with the laces tied and thrown over power lines, a duck decoy with a string tied around the neck, and a float tied to the other end.

Don't think, just do

A barbie doll leg lying on the side of the road, just the leg. I tried to imagine the story that went with that. Maybe brother and sister were in the back seat and the brother was teasing his sister that he was going to toss Barbie out the window, oops her leg blew off.

Saturday morning, I was out for 4 miles with my training group. We were on our way back in, the last half mile or so, running along the waterfront. The lady I was running with (we were like lil ducks, lined up two by two) glanced to our right and said "you don't see that every day".
I looked over, and there, sitting just off the walkway, was an open box of Qtips, the flap pulled back, several of the Qtips gone. It looked as if it could have been sitting on anyone's bathroom counter LOL We have NO idea why they were there or what they were for.
Just.. odd!

I finally have something to add to this thread! This morning, I was running with a friend in a suburban neighborhood that borders a rural area. We were doing several loops and on our second lap we came across someone's escaped pet llama walking down the road. It was a pretty calm llama, over 6 ft tall, just wandering down the middle of the street. A little farther down the road, the owner had come out to see what was going on and ran back in for a rope. By the time we made it back for our third loop the llama was gone, hopefully back home.

I was running along the local trail this morning around 6 AM and going for about 4.5 miles, just a nice easy jog. So I was at about 2 miles maybee a little more and I see this light. It is very bright and I cannot figure out what it is. I think it is a bicycle but the only car in the parking lot did not have a bike rack. Then I notice the light is weaving a little. As it gets closer I realize it is a head lamp for another runner. She has the high beam on super bright,. I was blinded !! I realize the importace of being able to see at night but really!! It wasn"t dark. Funny musta been new!

This is a very funny thread. i've come across alot of different wildlife. The two that i like the most is the Red Tail Hawk and a 3 ft Brown/Tan snake. The cool thing was that i was able to get pictures of both. The hawk was only about 10 ft from me sitting on a tree branch at eye level. I saw this on the trails that i always run on at home. The snake i saw while out running on a bike/joggin trail out in Spokane,WA. I put the picture up as my profile picture. I'm not much of a snake person but i was able to spot this thing about 50 yards away as it tried to cross. I always have my phone with me b/c i listen to Iheart and was able to snap up a couple of pictures of the snake.
i also added a picture of the hawk on my page...feel free to stop by and check it out.

was out cross training last Sunday and I was stopped by a man in a car. ( I was on bike) He asked me what I was doing and I explained to him that I was training for a half marathon and I was actually stretching out my running legs. You could see the light bulb go on it his head(literally) and he said OH that's you I see going everywhere. I see you all the time you go right past my house almost everyday. I hope I read about you in the paper one day doing big things. I laughed and said I was almost 42 and slow but I am having fun. Then he asked about my husband and inquired as to what he does for fun and I told him he was home eating enough bacon for two of us!! Creeper emoticon

I stayed up too late last night, so got a late start this morning for my 10 mile run. I felt a little sluggish as I did a lot this week. Around mile 5, half way, I was getting bored and my mind tried to talk me into cutting my run short. My body felt fine, I checked in with every joint and major body part. Right then as I was passing a harbor I head the load roar of a big motor boat pulling out. As I looked up at it I saw the back end and it's name was...... DIG DEEP. Just the message I needed.

Something I HEARD: Then a little later as I was passing through an underpass, a tandem bike with a father on the front and a little boy on the back entered at the other end. The boy yells out to his dad "Why is everyone exercising?" It made me laugh. It was sunny and there were tons of people running, walking, roller blading and biking at the lakefront this morning.

I saw my first snake this weekend! It was a black rat snake, about 3 feet long. Running Buddy stopped me from running right at it! It slithered away and that was that... used up some adrenaline that I would have liked to put towards the end of my run!

There's a house that I've run by twice, but I drive by almost every day on my way to work. Out front it has a small train and bunch of nearly life-size scale Wizard of Oz characters. One day a week or two ago I ran by and there was a fancy hand-painted sign up in the yard that said "Who Stole the Tin Man?" Well, today, as I drove to work, there was a new painted sign in the yard that said "Thanks! There's no place like home." I didn't look quickly enough, but I assume the Tin Man was returned.

what is it with guys and peeing just anywhere they want to? Is it that they have no self control over this? Or do they like to take it out and display it in public like that? Poor hygene? Even if I could, I would't. I just don't get it.

So the other day I was about to set out for a run and a heavy storm came rolling through. Fortunately it passed fairly quickly and I headed out an hour later to take advantage of the cooler temps the storm had temporarily left. I headed out to my usual running trail which is always busy in the summertime and I saw no one. Eventually I saw some cyclists and a few other runners. About half way through my run, the path I'm on passes under a street, with a short wall in the middle. The right lane was flooded from the storm, so I pull to the left side coming up behind two young guys walking around. Just as I come up behind this one guy, he turns towards the side wall and opens his pants and starts peeing, just as I pass right behind him. What timing!

Maybe I should change up my running routes? My runs are terribly boring in comparison, although last week I set out for an early run (4:45am), got about 1/2 mile in, turned a corner and found that construction had torn up the street, it rained, and I was suddenly running through a mud pit. Yuck!

Elvis in the Pink Caddy is a great vision as well.

I've seen many things over the years. Last year I saved a cat from a coyote. I've seen all kinds of crazy trash thrown on the side of the roads. I've also seen Elvis drive by in his pink Cadillac. There was a older gentleman (probably in his 50's or 60's) who I would see running in the neighborhood wearing a polo, jeans and comfortable dress shoes.

The worst story is when I was in high school and our cross country team would run from the school down to the park. Some idiot was riding his motorcycle up and down the street past the girls on our team wearing super short shorts and exposing himself. Some of the bigger guys on the team ran into the street and threatened to knock him over and he drove off.

This thread is hysterical!

I live in a town that has a large art college and there are always some creative characters. Once in awhile I see a student riding one of those tall bikes from the 1800s with the HUGE front wheel. Another time I ran past a guy dressed up like an Egyptian Pharaoh- headdress and all- except the costume was red, while and blue!

My favorite regular that I see when I run is another run/walker. She's of retirement age, has blood red hair, is usually wearing neon colored spandex and she's usually singing and dancing to whatever is playing in her headphones. She doesn't give a darn what anyone thinks and seeing her makes me so happy!

At my first 5K I was narrowly beat by guy dressed as a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer!

My runs certainly are not entertaining. I run in the city on the running path along the sores of Lake Michigan. I see a lot of soccer and softball games, bikers, runners, roller-bladders and walkers. I will pay more attention for something unusual.

My runs are obviously boring compared to some of your stories! I mostly run in Liberty State Park as my neighborhood is just not appealing for running, so it's moslty other runners, bikers, people fishing and families enjoying the park with their children. I do have to be careful with the occasional geese if I'm nunning on some of the tracks instead of the "boardwalk" or the road. Otherwise, pretty non eventful.

I also remember running early one morning (rare for me) and seeing a few racoons busy tearing apart someones garbage when i noticed them they looked at me like deer caught in the head lights, strange thing was they were not afraid of me they had a mean look in thier eyes I dont trust racoons i crossed the street to be out of their path

I live in Utah so seeing deer is pretty much a daily occurance for me. The strangest thing I have seen is a man dressed all in black walking towards me singing Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne at the top of his lungs. It wouldn't have been strange except it was 4:30 in the morning!

Great stories.
I live way out in the country. I have seen deer, wild turkeys, wild dogs, rabbits, squirrels, and of course my favorite....deer hunters. Hunters looking at me wanting to know why I am running down the middle of the road when no one is even chasing me and I am scaring all the deer away. Last deer season I had to change my running days from Saturday to Sunday (no hunting on Sundays).

Heehee, the peeing while running is pretty frequent, isn't it? To distract myself during my first 1/2 marathon, I counted how many people peeled off to the shrubs alongside the course. No doubt what they were up to!

I ran a local 5K a couple of weeks ago. Part of the route was through what tends to be the "red light" district at night. So I'm running up a hill looking everywhere but UP the hill and I notice a seriously hot pair of red stilettos. My eyes ventured further up and noticed the micro-mini and questionable choice of top to complete the ensemble. As my eyes finally got to this gal's face I realized it was someone I'd to high school with many years ago. I was torn between being absolutely horrified and slightly impressed that she could pull that off at our age!

During my Pgh HM, I was doing my 1 minute walk interval. This runner stopped to the left a little in front of me. I was afraid he was hurt. I looked when I passed him and he had whipped it out to pee on the course. ICK!!!!!!!!

If we don't count the HM. I was running around my son's ponds in rural SC. I couldn't figure out what was walking toward me. When I got there, I jumped 2 feet! They looked like vulture ducks! CREEPY! I actually got out my phone and took a pic!

Cary.. I got one that might top yours... Imagine yourself running and seeing said shapely endowed woman coming at your on a cruttches outta the Dr's office with a casted foot... I noticed a.) the 6" spike heel on the other as she was rather precariously ambulating towards me... as i wondered to myself "crap am i gonna have to stop and catch her because i'm sure she's gonna fall over"..i started to wonder if the 6" heels were the culprit of the one broken foot.... and as i got even CLOSER... i wonder who the HECK has time to BEDAZZLE AND GLITTER their CRUTCHES?!?!?!?! i decided the gentleman who was walking next to her could try to catch her... because i don't know if i could without lecturing her after..lol...

my second one is: while working at a local university at the next town over .. I had heard rumor's of tutu man....OK ALMOST crashed my car the day i saw this guy.. in the biggest PINK TUTU EVER...riding a bike with his long flowing beard and hair.... it was a distinct WTF moment.....lol...

A hoodlum running toward me dressed in black with arms flailing at 5:30AM. Turns out it was my son who lives out of town. He was driving to our house to surprise me, saw me running, parked his car where I couldn't see it and ran toward me. He thought it would be a nice surprise. Scared the heck out of me!

Oh, yes, races are a good place to see people dressed, well, interesting to say the least.

I think the worst was the first race my uncle was in. He wore his spandex shorts - with nothing else over them. As you can imagine, we REALLY didn't need to see that & my husband teased him a little. At our last race the uncle was getting ready to undress down to his spandex again but my hubby wouldn't let him. "NO, don't do that!"

These are great!!

I don't know that I've seen anything too exotic. Once I had a flock of wild turkeys cross a trail in front of me. And I've been chased by a chihuahua...

Then again, when I think of some of the crazy outfits and costumes I've seen at races, there are some good ones. (But who HASN'T seen oddly-dressed people at races?!)

Katrina - LOL!

PinkBean - nice!

I saw a bunch of buzzards eating a raccoon carcass, but there was one bird moving differently and a bit oddly than the rest of the birds. Turns out it was a nosy black cat. The buzzards firmly but gently chased it off. I've almost wiped out on animal bones, too.

I didn't see it, but a few years back someone's tiger got loose somewhere around here.

Not too many crazy human sightings.

I live in a pretty rural area but have not yet come across any wild animals.

Early one morning I did see 3 young adults walking to their car dressed in mid evil/renaissance garb. That was pretty strange. At first I thought they were pirates.

Also, I find comfort in knowing that the litter bugs in my town practice safe sex. I've seen countless condom & packages on the roads.

I've seen some nut out running in a blizzard...

Oh wait. That was me!

It was actually fairly warm - hovering just below freezing. But no one could see because of all the heavy snow falling and blowing around. My dog and I had a great run that day

This certainely doesn't top that, but I live in the suburbs of Chicago, so any wildlife outside of a zoo is a beautiful site, and on an evening training run last fall at the Arboretum, I came upon a couple of deer gracing along the path. As I approached, they looked up at me, paused, ran alongside me for a couple hundred yards and then went back to grazing. It was an awesome zen like moment that I will never forget!

Surely with all of the miles we log, we've all seen some odd things on our runs. Share yours here!

Today I saw a rather rubanesque (sp?) woman walking around the lake wearing a strappy tank, tight jeans, sunglasses and a visor (be prepared, right?), and little kitten heeled sandals, using a FENCE PICKET for a walking stick! I wanted to say, um, maybe you wouldn't need your "walking stick" if you wore some sensible shoes to WALK AROUND THE LAKE! LOL
