haven't tried that..I usually start typing that address and it gives me the whole address if I've been there before. It is cool.

Speaking of Firefox, version 3 is awesome! Now at the address bar you can type anything and it will pull up suggestions. For instance, I can type in "spore" and it will pull up this thread. The results are instant.

requirements based on OS and browser are stupid...especially if they won't even let you attempt to run it (even if it is "your own risk" blah, blah, blah). I've come across some sites (TurboTax last year) that said it would use Mozilla Firefox whatever version or better (I had better) on Windows and Mac...at the time I had Linux, but it's the same Firefox and would have run it just fine, but no, I had the "wrong" OS.

Yeah, I tried to download it last night. I read all the main parts of the requirements. I have plenty of system memory and processing power to run it, but they want me to have the latest OS to play it. I can't see investing $99 just to be able to play this game. Seriously EA, do I need the new OS if I have the power?

And why the DS and not other consoles? Oh well, I guess I'm just jealous.

Since you paid the full price for the creator, will you get a discount on the game?

I decided to shell out $10 for the whole character creator and now I get to test their tech support. it won't recognize my internet connection and therefore won't start.

I have a serious belief that it has to do with having the trial version and then buying the full version, but as a QA professional.... I would have thought that their QA department would have tried doing that before launch. *shrug* maybe I have an odd PC set up or something.

QA can't test *every* set up, but I refuse to believe they would not have run through an install trial/uninstall trial/install full test... that's just BASIC if you are offering two different versions of your software. &shrug& we'll see... I might have to acquire spare cycles to see if the spore community has figured out this one

I fear for Spore. Even if it's a very very good game, there is no way it can live up to the hype it's fans have piled up in expectation. It promised soooo much. The fans have waited sooo long. I just can't see them pulling it all off. I'm kind of hoping they surprise me.

Did someone say EA? Don't get me started. Did you know these @$$h@+$ still sell Tiger Woods PGA 2006, but turned off all online servers supporting the game? I am pretty pissed with them right now. I mean, 50% of the achievements for the xbox version can only be achieved online. And while I do understand the evolution process of software, its still pretty stupid. Nothing like buying something only to find out you can only use half of it. I know bequeath EA the title of the "One-Slice Toaster".

We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.

gotta say the "EA" mark always makes me question whether the game would be worthwhile or not...game sounds interesting though.

Read the specs on the Mac though - make sure you meet the req's. apparently, it's limited.

And I agree with you on the EA thing, but the fun factor is really a clincher for me :D

Cool, I'll be checking it out then. Can't beat the price. The game sounds fascinating enough. I can imagine it being cool to play online via the xbox or even something creative with the Wii. The only thing I'm nervous about is the EA label. I can see them charging $5 to buy an extra set of "eye" options, etc.

They *DO* have a Mac Version.

I have *not* downloaded it on the office mac... and I'm *not playing it when I should be writing my performance test plan.... *cough*

As for console platforms, I'm not sure. but it's EA - anything is possible. They have a version of the Creature creator for the DS!

I honestly think that Spore has gotten a lot of viral marketing from those of us who have been waiting for awhile. Launching the character Creator before the game is sort of like giving a "try before you buy" type of thing. Just enough to give you a taste but to leave you wanting more :D

Thanks for the update. I was so confused on why they were releasing the character creator before the game. Perhaps because it has been so delayed. When you were on the site, did you happen to see if they have a Mac version? What about the possibility of it hitting consoles?

Well.... ok - not the game - just the character creator right now, but still

you can download it for free from http://www.spore.com/

so what's it all about?

Spore reminds me of The Sims.... without all the demanding stuff and with all the uber cool stuff!

Let me explain. It all starts with a little organism that you create on your little planet. This organism goes out, hunts, gathers, builds, evolves and can eventually become a space faring race.

This is the best part! Every other Spore world out there is part of your Spore Universe. It's like a single player MMO. What happens in your universe, stays in your universe, but your universe is populated with the worlds that other players create. (it's kinda cool IMHO)

Anyway, onto the character generator (which is the only part you can download right now anyway). There are two versions - the free version which has about 40% functionality and the paid version. You don't get every single option available with the free version, but you get enough to get your feet wet.

The free version also has some emotes you can "test" with. Being the ever social player - I like this part the best... well, and the character creation part too :D

Character creations is INTENSE! Honestly, I think this character creator is on par with City of Heroes/Villains with options! You can stretch, move, rotate or position every single piece you place on your little spore guy. You can actually maneuver every single individual vertebrae!

The prints are fun and once you get used to the color selector (or stop long enough to read the pop up that comes up while hovering over it *cough*I'm impatient*cough*) The possibilities seem endless.

The free version has all of the listed functionality above as well as approx 6-8 each of heads/eyes/ears/hands/feet/extra's (they give nifty bonuses)/prints/patterns.

The full version has all of the options unlocked and will allow you to further customize your character as an herbivore, omnivore or carnivore (different mouths are suited to different things).

As a free "just play around and see what kind of crazy creatures you can make" this is an AWESOME little toy. If you are not an "alt-o-holic" or someone who enjoys spending hours just creating characters - you might want to pass on this (or download it to make a few and see what kind of crazy creatures you can come up with, and know you can put it down with no regrets)

Create you creature, make it do some emotes, take some pictures and send some post cards with your creature in them and see what other kinds of creatures others are creating right from the client! It's really kinda cool.

Highly recommended - It's fun, and it's free.

If you like it tons, it's a $10 fee to download the FULL character creator or you can wait until the game launches in September to get the whole thing for $50!
