Unique Storage - Thinking Outside the Box

I love looking at older homes. I find that they have a lot of character that we don't often see in newer built houses. However, the only problem with older homes is they often have tiny closets or none at all.

Why? The original occupants' wardrobes just weren't that big. If you like older homes or already live in an older home, you will have to force yourself to get creative with storage issues.

Even in newer homes, we often find that we just don't have anywhere near enough storage--not enough kitchen cabinets for all our stuff, not enough bookcases or shelves for all our books and collectibles. So how do we deal when lack of storage space?

1) Don't store clutter: First and foremost, declutter what you can before you go crazy trying to create new storage space for things you don't need. Before you plan your new closet space, reassess your wardrobe and streamline your clothes so that you are using space only for what you really need to store.

Consider an eReader for new book purchases. While it's nice to have a collection of prized books in our homes, eReaders are great for keeping the volume of books to a reasonable amount.

It's sad, but true, that clutter will expand to fill the space available. As a first step to storage planning, weed out some of your possessions.

2) Repurpose: Things don't always need to be used as they were intended to be. An old dining room sideboard found at a yard sale or auction, painted white or a bright color, can find a new life when placed in your family room to hold board games, playing cards, videos, CDs, audiobooks or craft supplies.

Place a beautiful old wicker picnic basket on top of your refrigerator to decoratively hold tablecloths and napkins.

3) Look up: The unused space over your toilet can be a great place to build a cabinet for storage of toiletries. Check the space over a door to see if there is a room for a shelf to store items that you don't mind having in plain sight.

In your kitchen, you may be able to use the space over your cupboards to store larger kitchen items, particularly your more decorative items like cake stands, pitchers, large mixing bowls and the like.

4) Look down: If your home has a pedestal sink, you can make an attractive skirt behind which to store toilet paper, tissues, and the like. Perhaps your house has eaves that are too low to allow a piece of furniture, but would happily accommodate wall-to-wall shelves.

The space underneath your bed, besides collecting dust bunnies, offers a wealth of storage space. There are many products specifically designed for this purpose, many with wheels so the storage container can be rolled out when needed. It can be a great way to store your out-of-season clothing or extra sheets and blankets.

Pretty baskets on the floor can hold magazines, towels, knitting projects, and I'm sure you can think of many other items.

So before giving up on your home's limited space, try some of the tips above. After you have lightened the volume, looked up, looked down, and repurposed, you should be well on your way to enjoying the unique and creative storage spaces in your home.

Store Earrings in Ice Cube Trays

I love earrings and was tired of not being able to organize them where they stayed together (besides using the little Ziploc bags you can buy at the craft stores). I enjoy watching HGTV for all the ideas they have and found this one on one of the episodes of House Hunters. Use ice cube trays!

This was a brilliant idea, so I rushed to the dollar store to purchase some trays. This has been so wonderful being able to locate a complete pair of earrings in a hurry. My jewelry chest has deep drawers and I can stack them 3 trays high. Hope this works for you!

scarf storage ideas:
Here are three possibilities that may help:

1) DIY Scarf Rod

Use mounting brackets to hang a curtain rod in the back of your closet, or somewhere in your bedroom. Purchase inexpensive shower rings or hooks and hang the shower rings on the curtain rod. Next, thread the scarves through the rings or hooks.

2) Use a Tie Rack

While you may be short on space in your closet, you can probably hang a tie rack on the back of your bedroom door. Then display each scarf just as you would a tie.

3) Hang a Clothesline

First, hang decorative pegs on the wall. Then string a clothesline using the mounted pegs. Either display the scarves as you would a tie, or run the scarves through the shower rings. This may become an interesting piece of wall art in your bedroom!

Clear Strawberry Containers as Storage

Being a Grandma gives me the excuse to have a lot of crayons and markers around. To keep everything in storage, I use clear leftover strawberry containers. They even lock on the ends. You can also very easily stack them www.thriftyfun.com/Clear-Strawberry-

If you hae any of that wire shelving in your laundry or storage area, it is possible to hang your spray bottles right from the fronts of a shelf.

Organize spray bottles and free up shelf space--To organize spray bottles and free up some shelf space, use a tension curtain rod either in the pantry, under the kitchen sink, or in the cupboard above the washer and dryer. Then, simply hang the rod and then hang the bottles by the sprayer.

I hate digging through my jewelry box looking for matching earrings. Does this happen to you too?

If you're always misplacing one earring or its back, take a moment to pair them through the holes of an old button.

Bonus: They'll look cute (and be easier to find) in your jewelry box.

**Lhlady517's comment: I hook my earrings that match necklaces through the links of the necklace. I also use old ice cube trays to keep the rest of the earrings under control.

This was listed as: Old Binder Rings for Kitchen Storage--But I can see it used in many places.

I know we have a few old binders that were falling apart from use. I decided to pull the binder ring part out and use for hanging stuff in the kitchen. They already have holes in them so it was easy to hang. You could also spray paint them.

Use Laundry Bags to Organize Underwear Drawer
Take laundry bags with zippers, use one for underwear like panties, bras, and one for your socks. That way your drawer is always nice and neat. When you go away on holidays, just put the bags into your suitcase. You can use a larger one for your T-shirts. Never do you have to look for stuff again. Same goes for guys.

Storing Your Off-Season Clothes

I fill regular garbage bags with clothing that I am going to store. Then, I take my vacuum sweeper hose and stick it inside the bag. After gathering the plastic bag around the hose, I let it suck the air out and everything shrinks down real tight. I pull the hose out carefully, keeping my hand wrapped around hose. After twisting the bag around several times, I then tape the top down on the bag with masking tape.

I also did this when my daughter was traveling home on a plane. She was going back with more then she came with. It made more room in her suitcase for other things she bought on her trip.

There are many things around the house that can be repurposed to be useful again.

Storage

If you buy large plastic boxes of salad at your local warehouse or grocery store, those boxes are useful for a variety of things--holding cookies you are giving to someone, corralling crayons or craft supplies, organizer for small jars in cabinets, etc.

Many of us have empty candle jars that are just too pretty to throw away. These are great for holding cotton balls and other makeup needs, seashells or stones gathered from a trip, loose change, homemade bath salts, or to make a tiny terrarium.

Even if you take your own bags to the grocery store, you probably still accumulate extras. Good places to keep them include empty tissue boxes or the large plastic jars in which pickles, pretzels , etc., come.

Fold extension cords and place inside empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls to keep them from tangling.

Old suitcases are great for holding outgrown kids' clothes that are being saved, seldom used clothes (ski clothes, etc.) or old papers that you want or need to keep but are not likely to need soon. Make a note where they are.

**Lhlady's notes: I use plastic and glass food jars to store my dried herbs, spices, noodles (with a bay leaf to repel bugs), flour (also with a bay leaf).

Store Shoes And Accessories On Bookshelves
I live in a small space. I don't have a closet. So, how do I store my shoes and accessories? Bookshelves. I use bookshelves, with adjustable shelving, that I already own. I use a filler (multiple plastic bags tied inside a single bag) to stuff my handbags so they keep their form.

For shoes, I stuff the toes with newspaper. If you need an alternative to expensive closet organizers, find bookshelves that will fit in your closet. They should be the same style and color, even if they are different sizes, for a polished look.

Hang Pegboard for Playroom Organization
I was having trouble in my daughters' toy room. Their things were always on the floor. So I installed "peg board", as used in the garage, etc. I painted it purple and pink to match their room. I used peg board hooks to put their toys all up and down the walls to get them off of the floor. I used old Easter baskets and things like that to hang from the hooks. I even pulled a small shelving unit up off of the floor and put it on the wall as well. It is much more organized and now my girls can find their toys and I don't have to keep reminding them to clean.

For the pegboard hooks, I also used paper clips for light things, and reused old curtain hooks by taking off one part of them. I hung their "kitchen" items on the wall so that they would have easy access to them. Then, I took a long curtain that had two sides to it and put it in their closet with all of their dress up clothes. Now they have a curtain for their "stage." You can become really creative.

Storing Winter Gloves and Hats
I purchased a hanging shoe bag and I use it on the wall behind our back door so that when someone needs a pair of gloves, all they need to do is grab a pair that is conveniently placed in one of the shoe pockets. The pockets are also large enough to put hats in by folding them in half. It has worked perfectly for us for five years now!

Use Short Bookshelf for Family Shoes
We constantly have a heap of shoes in front of our front door making it difficult to walk into our house. One day, after organizing the shoes, yet again, I went looking for a solution. The result? A short bookshelf that wasn't being used became the home for the family's shoes! Even my husband's big shoes fit on the shelves perfectly.

Drawer Organizing--I've found that since my husband is an avid golfer, we have an abundance of golf ball boxes, which make perfect drawer organizers. The boxes from Titlist, Pentach, and Calloway are reinforced and just the right size. They will fit into shallow drawers, but also are the right height (2 in.) and reinforced. This makes them perfect for organizing tall items, and keeps them from falling over when you shut or open the drawer.--By Tina from Springfield, MO www.thriftyfun.com/tf55413394.tip.ht

Store Small Electronics in Pencil Packs
After losing any number of important electric items with their associated cords, we have decided to store each in their own pouch. They don't fall on the floor and get separated this way.

These are soft and they are a great way to organize small electronic items with their cords or chargers. The photo is a little blurry but no more lost iPods, Nintendos, or cell phones. Whew!

Tips For Storing Crystal
When storing crystal dishes and glasses, never wrap them in newspaper. The newspaper will take the moisture out of them and make them break when handled. If you are going to store them for a long time, take them out at least once a year and wash them, this helps to replenish any lost moisture and extents the life.
