Freshen Up a Smelly Carpet
Carpets add warmth to a room, but they can pick up a collection of smells and dirty spots. Experts agree that carpeting and rugs should be vacuumed at least once a week to keep dirt from getting embedded in the fibers, where it wears them down. Here's a way to freshen up a bedraggled carpet...

In an empty spray bottle, mix one part liquid fabric softener (any scent you prefer) with six parts water. Spray the carpet with this solution, and then vacuum. The carpet will be more dust-resistant, generate less static electricity and smell fresher, too.

Get Salt Stains Off Boots and Shoes
Category: Home

[hm_snow_shoe.jpg] If you've been out walking on snowy or icy streets or sidewalks, your leather boots or shoes might be wet and streaked with white from salt residue. Here's what to do to keep your boots and shoes looking and feeling stylish...

Let shoes or boots dry naturally, away from direct heat and out of the sun. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with newspaper (which will absorb odors, too). When your leather (see the next paragraph for suede) shoes or boots are completely dry, rub them with a piece of raw potato—the inside part of the potato, not the skin— then buff them up with a bit of castor oil on a clean rag. Your leather will look and feel much better.

To remove salt from suede boots, create a solution made from one cup of water and one tablespoon of distilled vinegar. Dip a soft sponge in the vinegar-water solution, and gently wipe the stains off the suede. Brush with a suede brush when the boots or shoes have dried from the vinegar-water treatment.

15 Cleaning Hacks That’ll Change Your Life: by Briana Cameron

Love cleaning the house? Hate cleaning the house? Either way, these cleaning hacks will get you through your weekly chores faster, easier and happier.

1. De-tarnish your silver without all the elbow grease: Line your sink with aluminum foil, pour in 1/2 a cup of table salt and 1/2 a cup of baking soda, fill with hot water and then add the silver. After half an hour, the tarnish should have transferred to the foil.

2. Is the kitchen sink disposal starting to smell funky? Throw in orange and lemon peels, then flip the switch on to grind them up. Enjoy the fresh, citrus-y aroma and convince your friends that you spent the afternoon cleaning.

3. Hate when the sponge in your kitchen sink never dries out because it’s too busy sitting in wet, grimy filth? Use a medium or large binder clip to help it stand up straight on your counter - it’ll dry out much more quickly this way.

4. Get rid of grease stains on furniture by coating the stain with cornmeal. Let it sit for fifteen minutes before vacuuming it up.

5. If you rarely use your George Foreman grill because it’s a nuisance to clean, this will save your life…or at least your dinners. As soon as you’re done using the grill, unplug it and then place a wet paper towel on the plate. Close the lid to steam clean. Wipe dry with a new paper towel. This steam cleaning approach works for other griddles, cast iron and non-stick pans.

6. Not lucky enough to have a self-cleaning oven? Yeah, me neither. Mix vinegar, baking soda and a few drops of Dawn dish detergent to make a paste. Coat the inside of the oven, shut the door and turn it on for five minutes. Then turn it off, open the door and after fifteen minutes, wipe the paste off.

7. Drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into your toilet bowl to flush away the grime. Let it sit in the bowl for 20 minutes so that the citric acid kicks in, then flush and wash your toilet to regain its porcelain shine.

8. Do the cabinets that are near your stovetop get gunky? Mix a little bit of baking soda with a small amount of vegetable oil. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the mix onto the cabinets, then wipe clean with a dry cloth.

9. Blinds don’t just get normal-dusty. They get caked-on dusty. Dip a sock in a solution of white vinegar and warm water, then wipe those blinds clean.

10. Rub your spotty metal faucets with wax paper to prevent water marks and fingerprints from ruining their shine.

11. Make your own Febreze: Get a spray bottle and add 1/8 a cup of fabric softener, 2 tablespoons of baking soda and hot tap water. Shake well and spray.

12. Still can’t get those window tracks clean even though you moved into your apartment three years ago? Dip a Q-tip in vinegar and wipe, wipe, wipe. Just be sure to have a handful of Q-tips at the ready.

13. Right before you turn the water on to shower, spray the walls with a no-wipe cleaner. The splashing water and hot steam will do the rest of the work. If you need to scrub the grout, bring a rough sponge in with you and scrub as the water runs.

14. Can’t get in between your Mac laptop keys? Use a new makeup brush to dust away any debris in those little, teeny creases. If you want to get the grime off the keys themselves, spray a small amount of Windex on a soft cloth and wipe clean.

15. If you use your blender a lot, you’re probably sick of taking it apart to clean it out. Every .other time it needs to be washed, just pour in some dish liquid and water, turn it on for a minute and then rinse it out.

5 Steps to a Self-Cleaning Home: Kids and clutter go together like peanut butter and jelly. Between the toys and the books, the sports gear and the schoolwork, keeping your house clean and organized is an uphill battle—but it’s one that parents can win, says Lorie Marrero, founder of The Clutter Diet.

“The most important thing you can do to get rid of clutter is to set up systems in your home that help family members automatically put things away,” she says. “Start in the room that is bothering you the most; it’s usually the one where the most stuff accumulates, like the kitchen or family room. Once you get one room done, it will give you momentum to tackle the others.”

To cure clutter, Marrero uses the acronym ORDER. Here are her five steps for creating a home that stays tidy

O – Outline Your Plan
R – Review Items
D – Decide Where Things Belong
E – Establish Homes and Routines
R – Revisit Your System

Homemade Oxi-Clean
Materials

a container with a lid
1 cup water
1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup baking soda

Keep a jar of this next to your laundry machine and let soak in the stains for 15 minutes to overnight. You should either mix this up each time you're going to use it, or keep it in an opaque container. The reason hydrogen peroxide *always* comes in a dark brown opaque bottle is that exposure to light changes it chemically so it stops working.

test a small spot on clothes you may be unsure of, as to not have any surprises.

Easy Way to Clean Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds (or any kind of slatted shades) can be a real pain to dust! Solution: Cover your hands with either heavy cotton socks or cotton gardening gloves, then run your hands over the slats to dust them. Your fingers will be protected (important if your blinds are the sharp metal kind) as you efficiently maneuver across and between slats. To keep your blinds cleaner longer, give them a once-over with a fabric-softener sheet. The antistatic agent in the dryer sheet helps repel dust.

he Problem: Gum on a Carpet

Cost of Professional Repair: Starting at $65 a room

The DIY Fix:
Grab a bottle of white vinegar, recommends Nicole Burkholder, blogger for 365(ish) Days of Pinterest. After saturating the sticky area with good old-fashioned acetic acid, press a paper towel sheet down on it for about 10 minutes. Next, wipe at the area. The goop should come off, says Burkholder, with just a little elbow grease (e.g. pulling and scraping).

Melted Plastic on Your Pot
It happens. You're dumping a bag of frozen peas into a hot pot on your stove and some plastic melts onto the pot metal. And it just won't come off with regular dish soap! Here's what to use: Nail polish remover. But take care—the smell is quite strong, so be sure to use only a little at a time. Remove the pot from the stove, empty it and cushion with layers of newspaper or an old sponge that's big enough to catch any nail polish remover drips. Angle the pot so that the plastic goo is facing upward. Carefully drip the polish remover onto the plastic spot, and let sit for five minutes. If the nail polish remover refuses to sit, blot the area with another old sponge dipped in the nail polish remover. The plastic should eventually peel off. If it doesn’t, repeat the process. Wash the pot well. www.householdmagicdailytips.com/inde

Removing Candle Wax from a Carpet or Upholstery

Those candles on the coffee table create a nice ambience, but one wayward move can create a waxy mess on your carpet. Don't try to wipe the hot spill off your carpet or upholstery with a cloth! That'll just smear the wax around. Here's what to do: Cut off a section of a plain brown paper bag, and place it on top of the melted wax. With a medium-hot iron, press the paper for several seconds—long enough to soften the wax and have it transfer from the carpet or upholstery to the paper. If you have to repeat the process a few times, always use a new piece of brown paper. After the wax has been lifted, a stain may remain. Get some 3% hydrogen peroxide, which is less toxic than bleach and might not affect the dye in your carpet (but test an unseen section just to be sure). Dip a sponge in the peroxide, and gently blot the stain. After about 15 minutes of sponging, blot the stain with a dry paper towel. If the stain is lighter but still there, repeat the process. www.householdmagicdailytips.com/inde

Homemade Scrubbing Bubbles
There's a classroom science experiment that will never die—the baking-soda-and vinegar volcano. It's fun, safe, messy and…a great stove-top cleaner. When you eventually get around to cleaning that baked-on spaghetti sauce near your stove burners and regular cleaning sprays just won't get rid of the gunk, combine one tablespoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of vinegar (double the amounts for bigger blobs) in a small ceramic cup or bowl.

Don't worry—this small amount won't make a spewing volcano, but the combo will create an impressive foam. Quickly dump the bubbling ooze onto the caked-on blob, and simply wipe it off. If the ancient spill doesn't come off immediately, let the mixture sit for a minute or two. You also just saved your stove surface from abrasive commercial cleansers and harsh chemicals—safe for glass-top stoves, too! www.householdmagicdailytips.com/inde

Remove Pet Urine Without Harming Your Rug
Your cat or dog made a rest stop on the guest-room carpet a few hours ago (surprise!), and you have guests coming for the weekend. How do you make the spot (and smell) disappear? First, blot up any remaining urine (as much as possible). Then, if your rug is vinegar-safe (see below), mix one-half cup of white vinegar with one-half cup of water, and sponge it into the fibers. After a few minutes, blot the area and repeat the procedure. Then combine one-quarter cup of table salt with one-quarter cup of baking soda, and cover the wet spot with the mixture so that it absorbs the wetness. Wait until the baking soda/salt mixture dries—it may take a few hours—then vacuum.

To make sure your rug is vinegar-safe: Test carpet swatches or a tiny, inconspicuous patch of each carpet and rug in your home with white vinegar. If the color of any of the test patches changes, don't use the vinegar solution on that carpet or rug. Instead, if your pet has an accident on that rug, you'll want to deal with it immediately by blotting the spot and covering with a thick layer of table salt. Wait until the salt hardens to vacuum (overnight, if possible). www.householdmagicdailytips.com/inde

Goo Gone Alternative

You can make a Goo Gone alternative that works very well (and doesn't smell as gross) by mixing two parts vegetable oil with one part baking soda. The oil loosens the glue, and the baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive to wipe it away. Rinse with hot water and that's it!

Myself-cleaning oven. Here’s the best and cheapest way ever to clean an oven: Preheat to 200F then turn it off. Fill a heat safe glass dish with 1 to 2 cups of ammonia and set on middle rack. Fill another dish with 2 cups boiling water and set on bottom rack. Close the door and leave overnight. The next morning, remove dishes and wipe down the inside with a hot wet sponge that you have dipped into baking soda. Rinse and enjoy your sparkling clean oven. —Molly, Kansas www.everydaycheapskate.com/tips/stor

Keeping Your Tub or Shower Clean

Clean and protect your bath tub or shower unit. This will make it easier to keep clean in the future.

Approximate Time: Half an hour

Yield: 4 cleanings

Supplies:

1 Baby shampoo ($2.00)
1 Car wax paste ($5.00)
5/6 Rags ($Free)

Steps:

1. Wet the tub or shower with warm water.
2. Pour some of the baby shampoo onto a damp rag. Rub onto the surface in circles. Rinse often because of the soap buildup on the rag.
3. Rinse the surface and repeat if necessary. Until surface is clean.
4. When the surface is clean and dry open can of car wax and take a dry rag rub it into to wax and apply to the surface in circles. Like you wax a car.Work in 2x2 foot areas. Let dry (you can also follow instructions on wax) for several minutes. Take a clean dry cotton rag and buff like you would a car. Repeat until tub or shower is complete.
5. The car wax makes the soap, shampoo and water bead up and go down the drain instead of sticking to the surface. Repeat as necessary.

How to Get Smear-Free Eyeglasses

Homemade Windshield and Window Cleaners

The kind of commercial windshield washer fluid that is so convenient to buy at the store contains methanol. Methanol is extremely poisonous and is dangerous to breathe or touch. Less than a half of a teaaspoon can cause blindness and less that two ounces can kill a person.

On top of the dangers to the people using it, it causes environmental damage, by leaking onto the ground when we spray our windows with it. It also gets into the air as pollution. Billions of gallons of this washer fluid ends up in the environment every single year.

Here are directions for making your own windshield cleaning solution fluid.
1 gallon of water
1 oz dish soap
6 oz. rubbing alcohol
Rubbing alcohol acts as kind of an antifreeze for your windshield while driving.

Shake this all up in a jug, and then let the bubbles go down and pour into your windshild washer fluid cannister to the fill line. Please mark the container with the ingredients so it will be easy to remember how to mix it up.

Another mixture is the following for during the times when you don't really have freezing weather to deal with:
1 gallon of water
8 oz. of glass cleaner
Here is a mixture for cleaning your windows at home in the house. Put the following in a spray bottle and spray onto a window and wipe off with a clean rag using long back and forth motions.
2 quarts water
2 Tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp.of dish soap
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol

to some degree: here's what I found: Vinegar, throughout history, has been reputed to have strong antibacterial properties. One test by Good Housekeeping's microbiologist found that 5% vinegar is 90% effective against mold and 99.9% effective against bacteria, while a study showed that vinegar is less effective than Clorox and Lysol against poliovirus.

Using Vinegar to Get Rid of Ants

I live in what used to be an orchard, so as the weather warms, I get ants coming in. My solution, the natural way, is to keep white vinegar in a spray bottle in the kitchen and in the bathroom. When I see ants, I spray to cover. I leave for a few minutes then go in and take a paper towel to wipe the counter; in the bathroom, they come in via the tub so after spraying I just use the shower head and rinse. Since vinegar is an antibacterial, I get twice the benefit, it kills the ants and gets rid of odors at the same time (it may take a few times for the ants to get the message). Plus it's not toxic to the pets and humans living in the house.

DIY No-Bleach Soft Scrub by Rachel Paxton
Ingredients:

1/4 c. castile soap--may have to find it at a specialty store
3/4 c. baking soda
1 Tbsp. water
10 drops Tea Tree Oil
1 tbsp. white vinegar
Mix castile soap and baking soda together in a bowl. Stir in the water and tea tree oil. After they are well mixed, slowly stir in the vinegar. If you pour it all in at one time it will react with the baking soda and make a big bubbly mess. You should end up with a nice white paste very similar in texture to Soft Scrub. You can add more baking soda if it looks too runny. www.creativehomemaking.com/cleaning/

Foam Clean Your Washable Wallpaper

Use a light touch to wash washable wallpaper without drenching it. Combine ¼ cup of liquid dish detergent and 1 cup of warm water. Beat the solution in a mixer until there’s stiff foam. Use the foam on a sponge or cloth to wash the wallpaper. This method makes rinsing and drying faster.

Japanese Secret for Cleaner Floors--If you have a hardwood floor, try this Japanese cleaning method—sprinkle damp tea leaves on the floor. You’re not adding to the dirt…the tea helps to weigh down the dust, making it easier to sweep up. If there’s a little mound of dirt that you can’t sweep into the dustpan, wet a paper towel and blot it up.

Getting Dog Hair Out of the Carpet

There are a few pickup tricks that you can use when your pet sheds all over the carpet. First, try vacuuming the carpet vigorously using a brush attachment. Lift up any leftover hair with a damp sponge (you can buy sponges geared for this task at pet-supply stores). Swipe a sneaker over the carpet — hair will stick to the rubber sole. You could also roll lengths of cellophane or masking tape around your hand to pick up small amounts of hair.

Disposable gloves, disposable washcloths and disposable window cleaning brushes are all very convenient, but they're usually much pricier than conventional cleaning supplies.

Stick with the traditional household cleaning supplies such as rubber gloves, washcloths and multipurpose scrubbing brushes so you're not investing in one-time-use products. You'll be saving money, and saving the environment.

Did you know dish soap can do double duty as a carpet stain remover or window cleaner? Dish soap contains all the ingredients needed to get rid of stubborn stains on carpets, clothes, linens and even windows. Just mix it with warm water and scrub away.

Pump Up Your Vacuum Power

Wipe the brushes of your unplugged vacuum cleaner with a wet paper towel before you vacuum a carpet. It will help heighten its dirt-sucking power.

Also, change your dust bag more often than not. While it may cost a little more, you want to replace a bag that’s just about ⅔ full to avoid having the dust spill back out into the room that you are supposedly cleaning. Check it every three or four times you vacuum. (For bagless canister models, check them every other time the vacuum is used.)

Clean Your Leather Upholstery...With Beer

If there’s a wax buildup on your leather furniture, rub it with stale beer…or a solution made from ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar combined with ½ cup of water. Then wash the leather with saddle soap (available at tack stores where saddles and other equine supplies are sold, as well as some shoe-repair stores) and water. Complete the job by buffing the upholstery with a soft cloth to bring out the leather’s shine.

Hardwood Floor Care Straight from Your Kitchen Cupboard

To revive your finished hardwood floor’s shine, mix equal parts of distilled white vinegar and vegetable oil, and put the mixture in a spray bottle. Work small sections of the floor at a time. Start by spritzing the mixture and rubbing it in with a clean cotton cloth. With another clean cotton cloth, buff that section until it’s as shiny as can be. Then start on the next section of floor.

The Best Dust Cloths

In addition to (or instead of) buying a microfiber dust cloth, recycle old pairs of cotton socks or gloves and use them to dust. Old, cut-up cotton T-shirts and discarded shoulder pads also make good dust rags. Snagged pantyhose and used fabric-softener sheets are excellent lint-free dust collectors. And they’re all washable.

Three Old-Time Cleaning Remedies that Work from: Get Organized Now! Newsletter By Maria Gracia Issue: November 4 - 9, 2012
You've tried every cleaning product that you can find at the store, but they just don't work. Why not take some hints from Grandma's house and use some old-time cleaning remedies? Not only will they work more effectively, but they are also cheaper to make. If you have children or pets, these remedies won't be as toxic as modern harsh cleaning chemicals. You'll be helping the environment and your wallet by using the tips below. Read on and see how Grandma's old-time cleaning remedies can help you and your household.
* * * * * * *
1) A Simple All-Surface Cleaner--For a remedy that you can use almost anywhere around the home, just combine 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of cool water into a spray bottle. It's really that simple and you can use it on countertops, refrigerators, stoves or any other surface in your home. Also, don't be concerned about the smell of vinegar hanging in the air after you spray, because the aroma disappears once it has dried. It's the best all-round surface cleaner to use, as vinegar is one of the best natural cleaning products you can buy and use.
* * * * * * *
2) Get Rid Of Stains On Your Carpet--To get rid of those stains that linger on your carpet, try sprinkling one part baking soda and one part dry cornflour onto the carpet. Leave it there for an hour and then vacuum the mixture out. The baking soda and cornflour work together to lift the stains off the carpet, but this is most effective when applied immediately after the stain. * Side note: Make sure to test out the mixture on an inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn't discolor the carpet.
* * * * * * *
3) Clean Your Bathroom On The Cheap--Using toxic cleaning chemicals and harsh scourers will wear away at the surfaces of the bath and shower...making it easier for dirt, bacteria and mold to get trapped in the surface. Try using oil of cloves, only a couple of drops, into a bucket of water and wipe down the surfaces of the bathroom. If you give this a go, you might find that cleaning the bathroom is much more painless. Rather than using multiple, expensive cleaning products, you only need a few.

The items suggested in these tips can easily be found at your local grocery store, especially vinegar. There are plenty of more natural cleaning remedies out there. These three tips are just the beginning to environmentally friendly cleaning!

This is a great article, and I might add that I have been using it to get blood out of clothes for some time. I keep a bottle on my washer for just that.

It also is good to help with cold sores in your mouth, just dab a little on a cue tip and put it on the sore several times during the day. Clears it up real quick.

Panty Hose to Keep Ceiling Fan Clean
An easy way to keep ceiling fans clean. Cut the legs off old pantyhose and put one on each blade, stretching them until the whole blade is covered. You'll have extra at the motor end so twist this until it's a tight roll then tuck it back into the "leg". When the pantyhose gets dusty, just remove and wash.

We live on the edge of a gibber desert where it's very dusty so our fans are always dressed in their best. No longer plain white, they look very colourful. They're currently wearing purple and black.

Works well in the city also, where fans pick up city grime.

Easy Leather Care--We inherited a lovely leather couch and loveseat set from my husband's family when they moved. We have two young kids and a large dog, so the furniture does not stay clean long. We have found that baby wipes are great for cleaning leather. They are very gentle, and the amount of dirt that ends up on those baby wipes is unbelievable! It keeps the leather supple, too. Carpet Cleaning Solution: I've discovered a great carpet cleaner. I use 1/2 cup of vinegar and 3 tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide and put it in a spray bottle. Then I fill the remainder of the bottle with hot tap water. I just spray on the stain in the carpet and scrub out with a brush or use a carpet cleaning machine with vinegar in the soap chamber. --Haley www.stretcher.com/Newsletters/TDS_Ti

If it's real badly crusted/coated, whatever, it may take a couple of tries. I've also scrubbed it with a baking soda paste and then soaked. It's always worked for me. Just remember, it's not instantaneous.

Top Uses for Vinegar in the Home by Tom White

If you are looking to reduce the amount of toxins in your home, then you will definitely want to take a look at your cleaning products. Many store-bought cleaning products are highly toxic, and expensive too. Not only are homemade household cleaners better for your health, they are inexpensive and easy to make.

vinegar In the Kitchen
Use white vinegar to clean your garbage disposal. Pour vinegar into ice cube trays and freeze. Remove cubes from ice cube trays and place into ziploc freezer bags to store in the freezer. Once a week, place several cubes into the running garbage disposal. This will keep your blades sharp, as well as clean and deoderize your garbage disposal.

To clean your microwave, place 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup white vinegar into a bowl and microwave for 1 minute. Your microwave should now be easy to wipe clean with a damp rag.

Clean your dishwasher and remove hard water and soap build up by pouring 1 cup white vinegar into it once a month and running it through a normal washing cycle.

Vinegar is great for sanitizing your wood cutting boards.

Use a mixture of half water and half vinegar to clean the interior of your refrigerator. Apply with a damp rag.

Vinegar can be used to clean your automatic coffee maker. Fill the water resevoir with white vinegar and run it through a brewing cycle. After the brewing cycle has finished, rinse thoroughly with water.

Unclog a kitchen or bathroom drain by placing 1/2 cup vinegar and a handful of baking soda down the drain. Flush with hot water.

In the Bathroom
Spraying white vinegar onto your tiles and shower curtain will help prevent mold and mildew build up.

If you have hard water deposits on your bathroom fixtures, try soaking a rag in white vinegar and wrapping it around the fixture for several hours. Scrub with a scrub brush or old toothbrush to loosen and remove the mineral deposits.

Easily clean your bathroom toilet by pouring a cup of vinegar into the toilet and letting it set over night. Scrub with a toilet brush in the morning.

You can make a great shower and bathtub cleaner by mixing vinegar and liquid dish soap. Heat 1 cup white vinegar in the microwave and use a funnel to pour it into an empty spray bottle. Add 1 cup liquid dish soap (blue Dawn works best). This cleaner works on tiles, glass shower doors and bathroom fixtures. It is great for removing mineral deposits and removing soap scum. It not called the miracle tub and shower cleaner for nothing. And it will make your bathroom smell great too.

In the Laundry
White vinegar can be used in the place of liquid fabric softener in your washing machine.

To clean your washing machine, occasionally run the (empty) washer with one cup vinegar added.

General Cleaning
Vinegar can be used to clean eyeglasses. Just rub a couple of drops of vinegar into each lens, and wipe until dry.

You can make an all purpose household cleaning spray by combining 2 tbsp. vinegar, 1 tsp. Borax, and 1 tsp. liquid dish soap in an empty spray bottle. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. This cleaner is great for cleaning all areas of the home.

Make your own window and glass cleaner by mixing 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water, and 1 tbsp. white vinegar in an empty spray bottle. This all-purpose cleaner also cleans tile and chrome.

Vinegar is an all-around great household cleaner. It is very inexpensive, and you can find uses for it all around your home. Keep your family safe by reducing the amounts of toxins they are exposed to every day. Changing your cleaning habits is a great place to start.

Hard to Clean Toilets

Regarding tough to clean toilets, an environmentally-safe method is to scrub with borax (available in the detergent aisle and it's fairly inexpensive) on a regular basis and use a bit of well-moistened pumice stone to scrub away hard water stains at the water level.

Make Your Own Electronic Wipes by Rachel Paxton

After I started using my laptop computer all of the time I noticed at Walmart that you can buy cleaning wipes made especially for electronic screens (computers, televisions, cell phones). I bought a package and was very happy with them, but they are almost $5 for 25 wipes! I thought there must be an inexpensive alternative. www.creativehomemaking.com/cleaning/

Clean your sterling silver jewelry by placing it in 1 cup of water. Add 2 Alka-Seltzer tablets and wait for the plop, plop, fizz, fizz. After 5 minutes, rinse the jewelry and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Do you have a stainless steel sink? Wipe with a damp paper towel, and then polish with just a few drops of baby oil. The oil will repel water spots, so your sink will be sparkly and shiny for days.--Hint 1

The Only 5 Cleaning Supplies You Need:
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by cleaning products.

Glass cleaner, floor cleaner, bathroom cleaner, stovetop cleaner, disinfectant, deodorizer … each one has a never-ending list of chemicals, insisting you need it for the task at hand.

But do you need it, really?

Nope. Instead of spending on cabinets full of specific, expensive (and toxic) cleaning products, you can use these five basic supplies to cover 40 different household tasks, from removing tea stains to getting rid of ants.

DIY Windex: Homemade Glass and Window Cleaner by Rachel Paxton www.creativehomemaking.com/cleaning/
di
y-windex.shtml

Ingredients:

1/4 c. rubbing alcohol
1/4 c. white vinegar
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
2 c. warm water

Combine all ingredients together in an empty spray bottle and give it a little shake. You will need to shake it a little with each use if you see cornstarch at the bottom of the bottle.

The secret ingredient of this cleaner is the cornstarch. I don't know why it works, but it does! The total cost for this bottle of DIY glass cleaner is less than $.50.

Organizing Your Refrigerator
If you're like most people, keeping up with the organization of your refrigerator is one of the last things on your mind. We generally tend to forget about our refrigerator until there is a problem, like we suddenly need to put something in it and there's not enough room. You can actually avoid this problem though, if you organize it well to begin with.

Cleaning--Organizing your refrigerator is also a great time to clean it so you might as well take everything out of it, give it a good wash down, and just start from scratch. Dishwashing liquid is a good cleaner to use and paper towels work well to clean and dry with. Don't forget to take out the shelves and wash them down as well.

Get Rid of the Waste--Next, you'll want to throw away everything that has expired. If you have a compost pile then remember that many things can go in there. Food items that you'll want to avoid composting are dairy, fruits, and meats.

Organizing Your Food--Once you're ready to put things back in the refrigerator you should start by grouping things together. Use one drawer for all of the cheeses, one shelf (preferably inside the refrigerator door) for any condiments that need to be refrigerated, and put all of the vegetables together. If you have several drawers and they're all about the same size then put the items that you use on a more regular basis closer to the top so that you can just reach in and grab them.

If you lack shelf space then simple under shelf baskets and stackable shelves that can be removed are good ideas. These can help keep things separated and therefore easier to get to.

It might be a good idea to combine some things if you can. For instance, if you have three cartons of eggs but they're not all full, empty the eggs into one carton if you can and toss the empty ones. Likewise, merge salad dressing bottles, juices, etc. if you have more than one of the same kind and they've been opened.

Keep Items Handy--Although you might be tempted to put the larger items in the back so that they don't hide the smaller ones, this doesn't always work to your advantage. If you need to use the large item (like a carton of milk that's about to expire) then put it in the front. That way, you'll remember it and it won't go to waste. With that in mind, once you have organized your items you might want to leave a special space up in the very front to highlight items that you need to use soon or that you plan to use for your next meal.

Dry Eraser to Remove Permanent Marker: "My name is Shannon and I have found an amazing, magical, cleaning assistant. You see, I have an almost 3 year old at home who loves to get his hands on permanent markers and color on things he shouldn't. Like my antique coffee table and 2 end tables that happen to be solid wood and my favorite cherry stain color. Today, I found 3 more "drawings" he had been hiding from me all in permanent marker. ...
She told me that at the hospital where she works at; when someone accidentally gets permanent marker on a solid surface where it doesn't belong, ...use any dry erase marker color you have, it doesn't matter. Scribble over the permanent marker and then wipe it away with a paper towel, cloth or whatever you have and, "POOF", it's gone. ..." www.thriftyfun.com/tf11947826.tip.ht

Home Cooked Furniture Polish

Choose one of these formulas for polishing wood furniture...

Mix ⅓ cup of distilled white vinegar with 1 cup of olive oil or

Mix 1 cup of mineral or baby oil with 3 drops of lemon extract. Rub the homemade polish on the furniture with a soft, lint-free cloth, wipe it off and your wood will gleam.

Great tip, especially with these new detergents that are super concentrated, but you can not get just a little bit out of the bottle.

Stretch Your Dish Detergent--In a plastic squeeze bottle, combine one part liquid dish detergent with one part distilled white vinegar and three parts water. Shake it a few times before using. The detergent cuts the grease, the white vinegar disinfects and helps clean, and the water acts as detergent-extender…making it last longer.

Wax out of candle holders:
-- stick the candle (with holder) inside the freezer for an hour, take it out the candle easily slides out.

-- Spray the inside of a votive holder with a thin coating of any cooking spray or oil before dropping in a tea light. After the candle has burned down, the remaining wax will slip out.
