You know this is not victorian, but I forgot I have a Grant Wood Daughters of the American Revolution, I have it put away as the picture needs straightned in the frame, I don't know exactly old it is, it was my grandma's It would be a print, I know she had it as long as I remember, and she got it in Iowa, as that is where she was from, and it has the story of it on back of frame, My grandma used to belong to said orginization, but quit it when they refused to let Marion Anderson sing in DC, can't remember it it was at washington monument, or Lincoln memorial, and speaking of Lincoln Memorial, I have a memorial card for Daniel Chester French, My grandma's family knew him, and he gave a ugh, can't remember what they are called right now, but one of the things that sculptours do before they make the real thing, he gave one to my great uncle, as he was named after him, and now someone in the extended family has that and they should not have that, she is greedy, My great Uncle's son's should have that.

Ladies have been known to carry some pretty fancy compacts throughout the decades. Many women have had assortments of compacts to choose from as they often acquired them as gifts from husbands, suitors and friends. One of the major accessories for the handbag was the compact and powdering one's nose soon became a major event.

Although some of these little accessories were plainer and suited for practicality, many more were far from ordinary. Art Deco styles were all the rage during the 1920's, the rhinestone studded examples were a must have during the 1930's through the 1950's.

The rarer compacts offer a special appeal to today's collector. Hatpins with compacts built into the head are a wonderful find. These came complete with tiny ostrich feather puffs. Both vintage toy and compact collectors desire the hard-to-find Schuco jointed teddy bears and stuffed monkeys, where powder containers hid within their bodies.

Others spotlight their collections with compacts known as "flapjacks." These collectibles resemble a large, flat pancake. They often measure a whooping 6" or so inches in diameter. If a large mirror was needed, the flapjack surely filled the requirement, with glare to spare.

At one time compacts were a favorite souvenir. All types of compacts featuring everything from the Florida Everglades to Mount Rushmore can be found on the market today. Sweetheart compacts are also popular since they feature patriotic and military themes generally related to World War II.

Compact prices have continued to rise as the numbers of collectors increases. Even the most common examples usually sell for $20 and up. The rare examples mentioned above can sell for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars each, when found complete and in excellent condition.

Figural compacts are also considered rare or more appropriate, scarce. These examples, shaped to resemble everything from chairs to pianos, surface fairly frequently but the steep prices and heavy competition keep many collectors from owning them.

Even though compacts can get formidable prices, a nice collection featuring a wide range of examples can still be accumulated for much less money than other categories of collecting

Victorian china fairings are small porcelain figurines ranging from about three inches (7.5 cm) to about five inches (12.5 cm) in height, and depict a variety of scenes, humorous, political or domestic. The figurine almost always incorporates a base and many fairings have a caption describing the scene or making some point inscribed on that base. Although the majority of fairings are simply decorative, they were occasionally made in the form of pinboxes, matchstrikers or holders for watches or small mirrors. Some fairings were made in pairs, for example, "Grandpapa - Grandma", two separate statuettes of a small boy and girl, each dressed in adults' clothing.

China fairings are so named because they were given away as prizes at fairs in the Victorian era, in much the same way that we would win a coconut at a fair today, although some were manufactured simply for sale. They first started appearing in the middle of the nineteenth century and remained popular until the start of the First World War.

Genuine fairings are now keenly sought by serious collectors. They can range in price from a few pounds for the more common ones (such as "Last in bed to put out the light") to several hundred pounds for the rarer ones, the most keenly sought being the five fairings the Vienna series (uncaptioned, but characterised by a gold band around the base). As with any antique, the value of a fairing depends on its condition - they are particularly delicate and damage of any sort can seriously reduce their value - and, in the case of fairings that are paired, whether they are offered singly or with their partners.

Most fairings were manufactured in Germany by Conta and Boehme. This company developed a mass production method that no other company could match, thereby achieving an advantage over other firms.

my grandmother, I have the lineage, this plate went west, so to speak, They left Vermont and the part of the family that had that plate ended up in Iowa, I have a copy of a letter when they did that, and I remember how horrified I was when they stopped for lodging and shared a room with strangersound that out when I was quite young, I would say things have changed for the better in that department, could you imagine sharing a room, these were young girls and there were strange men in the room!

I showed the pic to my sister. She thinks it may be a cup plate ( is it around 6" across?) She said it probably was made by Staffordshire or a like company. Thanks so much for sending me the pic :) Who handed it down to you?

did not feel anything on it either, and I have decided it is not a plate but possibly a saucer

Sometimes the item will have instead of or in addition to the Maker's mark, pottery impressions. It could be numbers pressed into the item before it was fired. Sometimes they harder to see, but you can often feel them :)

I just took photo will download it and send to you, I am wondering since there is no marking if it just a plain white plate that was handpainted or something.

I don't think it is, I did peel off the old masking tape, there is no mark what so ever, possibly this week-end I will take a picture of it, and send it to you to look at, I can't believe there is no mark, saying where it was made, My ancestor was exiled from Scotland, Now you know why I love scottish stuff made in Scotland so much. like Gerard Butler, LOL! he and his brothers were on the side of Bonnie Prince Charlie, so had to leave

Well what is tranferware? LOL! See why you needed to do this? LOL! While you are explaining to me, I will go get plate and check out what I can, unfortunately there is a big envelope taped on back for years telling the story of it, so won't know where it was made or pattern

I have an antique set of Shakepeare with gold leafed pages bound in leather, It was an engagment gift to my great grandmother from great grandfather,

I have one plate circa 1700's that one each was passed to members of the family from a revolutionary war ancestor.

I would love to have a desk with a secret hiding place/drawer
