I donate them, I hold on to the "last" pair for cross training.

LGLANDT - Your comment made me laugh. I'll go to the gym to cross-train on the elliptical and somehow end up running on the track.

MRSFARRAND - The Asics I ran my first marathon in are about done for. You better believe I am hanging onto those as a trophy FOREVER.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I think I'll start using my old running shoes for cross-training once they hit 300 miles. I've got 6 pairs floating around right now in various states of use. They're starting to take over!!!

I will recycle them when they get to the point. but it will be hard to do because they were $150 dollar pair of shoes and once they are out of miles - I will want to keep them like a freakin trophy!

I have got to stop bringing them for cross training because then I decide that I want to do some running also. I need to hide my old ones from myself.

I hang onto a pair for errand running. My shoe store also takes back old shoes for recycling, so I do that when they're really dead. I wish they gave store credit for that though!

Good question! I hang on to mine for camping/fishing. I inevitably get them soaked at some point... :)

Our local running store also offers a little money off your next order for the old shoes. I do keep some of my shoes for lawn-garden shoes.

I know that my local running stores offers a $5 discount on a new pair of running shoes if you donate your old ones. I change my running shoes every 300 miles also but I keep the older ones up to 400 for cross training (biking, elliptical and strengh training)

This kind of goes with a couple of other questions on this board, but what should I do with my old running shoes? I burn through about 5 pairs a year and stop using them right around 300 miles. I've already had two injuries because I kept going on shoes when I shouldn't have so I don't push it anymore.

Are they worth donating? Should I hang onto them for cross training? Who takes old running shoes for donations anyway?
