I walked a little after I completed 8 minutes 2x - and I even ran 2 more minutes near the end!

DONE!! 2.53 miles and a 12:15 average pace, even with the walks tossed in. I was pretty confident going in to todays run. Now, on to the 20 minute run .... ugh.

Tabicat ... I just finished week 7 and I was doing my program at almost the same speeds. I found on my "run" part today (25 mins) I was fluctuating between 4.2 and 4.5 mph. I think you need to find a pace that is comfortable for you to breathe :)

Keep going!!

I'm a little nervous about this week. I run really slowly and am not sure if I should continue with the weeks at the pace I'm going (running around a 4.2 and walking around a 3.4 on the treadmill). Would you suggest i try to get through the program at a faster pace? or continue at this pace if I can make it through the time?

Completed W5D2 today and at first I was really surprised with the 8 min jog (up from 5 mins on day 1). I usually don't "look" ahead but I looked today and saw a 20 minute jog ... emoticon ... ok, hmm ... trying not to pysch myself out! emoticon

Hello Everyone!

I'm pretty new to posting here but I have read many of your posts for some inspiration. I'm on Week 5 day 2 of Couch to 5K, and I'm at a road block here. After running my first 8 minutes I get horrible non-menstrual but menstrual-like cramps (that sounded way less complicated in my head) and I have to stop and usually dash to the restroom. I've tried running in the morning, afternoon, not eating for 3 hours prior, and many different things, but nothing's working :(

I do think I should drink more water though. So I'm going to try that out. If it doesn't work, I may have to quit :( As much as I loved my progress, I feel that if I can't run for 8 mins then obviously I wouldnt be able to run for 20 minutes.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Ever since Week 5 Day 1, I've been feeling a little extra drained likely due to life stress more than physical exhaustion. My boyfriend and I had planned to do Day 2 after work yesterday, but indulged instead in a delicious Mexican meal and candy. Stress eating racked me up about 3,500 calories consumed yesterday... and I was nervous that junk would weigh me down today. This was not the case.

We started the day with an Extreme Weight Loss episode (with a nurse named Trista, an excellence story) and went off to our regular trail. It was busier than usual - it may have made me run a bit faster but also may have made my form a bit worse as a result... I'm hoping neither because it's always nicer when I get good results because of myself.

What really made this day actually pretty easy was my accidental mind game lol. I thought from memory the plan was 8 min run, 3 min walk, 5 min run, 3 min walk & 8 min run. So the walk seemed longer when it went on for 5 minutes, I was almost craving to break back into a run. And I thought the last run was only the middle one, so relative to my expectations it was actually very doable! I doubt I'll luck out the same way again, but I'm going into the big day 3 feeling confident.

Now off to a 2 hour walk in the sunshine :)

I redid week 5 Day 2 tonight and it went so much better! It helped that I didn't have the stroller... It went really well I was even surprised when it ended, I thought it went by really fast.

Looking forward to the real test: W5D3!!!

I tried Week 5 Day 2 today and I failed :( For the first time, I couldn't finish the run. The first 8 minutes went fine, but I wasn't able to finish the second one. I'll try again on Thursday. Maybe I'll go after the kids are in bed so I don't have to use the stroller...

Way to go, Kirchren!

I have been amazed at each step I have attempted and then succeeded, you can do it!

W5D2 completed yesterday. I was so surprised that I could run 3/4 of a mile at a time now. I do it on the treadmill and my speed is only 5 mph, so it took me longer than 8 minutes to do the 3/4 of a mile, but I did it.... twice.

Feeling a little scared of the 20 minutes of running in the next workout, but who knows, maybe I'll be able to push through that as well.

W5D2 done! I cant believe that I am able to run for 8 minutes at a time ... so will I be able to run for 20 at a time?

It is 76 degrees out, and I was hot, hot, hot. I don't want it to get any warmer!

Did W5D2 but had to stop a few seconds short on 3 of the running intervals. My breathing was horrible tonight. Was gasping for air. Tuesday was good compared to tonight. Dunno what was up with that. Then of course my legs started hurting too. Somehow I still ran all the intervals, just cut 3 a few seconds short. Today was 1 1/2 miles Saturday is 2 1/4 miles and I really don't think my legs will make it. Heck dunno if my breathing will either at this point. Anyway, coaches told me to talk Saturday off from the group and try to run it at home on my treadmill. That way I'll have a softer surface and I can also stop as soon as I feel pain. This way I still get some training in & won't get so far behind. And of course, I go to the doctor on Monday. Disappointed & frustrated, but I'm doing everything I can to not give up.

Finished w5d2 yesterday! I find myself jogging slower when I have longer times to run...anyone else find this happening? Everything feels great except my calves get pretty tired (there are hills all around my house, nothing terrible, but enough to make things interesting!)

Finished W5 D2 today. Ran on the treadmill instead of outside. The treadmill seemed much easier. Really concerned about the 20 min run but will keep pushing towards my goal. I'm really amazed by the progress so far.

Woo! Finished the day. The GPS on my phone is being glitchy so I can't get precise data so I'm running on the same trail/markers to enter in my route later. I can't decide if I like it better that I can't see/hear what my pace is. I seem to be keeping pretty steady. I really wanted to make that two mile marker today and I came just one tenth of a mile short :/ Maybe since I was more focused on distance than the timed intervals I didn't take much notice of the eight minute intervals. Looking forward to next run. Half way through the program!

W5D2 done! The last few minutes of the second interval were tough. I always tend to lose my breathing around there, but I still did it! I'm not so sure about the D3 run, but I think if I can do two large intervals, I'll still be happy!

W5d2 is done! The first run wasn't too bad. I'm glad I did my bonus 10 min run last week because it made it impossible to say "i can't" today. The 2nd run was only tough because my shins really started to hurt but I pushed through by focusing on music and breathing, and decided to keep going for 2 extra minutes. The first run was only .65 miles, and the 10 min run was a slower .77 miles but it's ok! All that matters is I did it, and didn't stop till I finished. Am nervous about D3 but am also anxious to give it my best shot!

Sooooo I was all prepared to repeat day 1, but once I got on the treadmill, I talked myself into giving day 2 a try, and that I could always revert back to day one if I couldn't finish the 8 minute run. Well somehow I got through the whole thing!! I did both 8 minute runs and I am just in shock. The first 8 mInutes went by so easily, but I really did struggle on the last one, my shins and calves just felt sore and heavy at that point, but I stuck it out.

I think I am going to repeat day 2, and do day 3 (the scary 20 minute run!) on Saturday. For some reason my saturday runs always feel the best, so I think I'd feel more confident doing the long run then, and doing this one once more.

Hmmm. My week 5 is only 7 minutes three times with a 3 minute walk in between. The jump from 3 to 5 minutes was bad so I repeated it, but the jump from 5 to 7 was not as bad...wonder if it was the change in scenery. Running up and down my same two streets each time is getting boring! Will Do Day 2 tonight.

Last night's run felt wonderful! Made it through the first run, halfway through the walk the app on my phone stopped working! GRR!! I started it again and did the second run.. but now I don't have it recorded on my phone, so I am going to redo the run tomorrow. Having the confidence I can do the run is more than half of the battle!

The first run I actually continued for a full 13 minutes. The walked for 5 and finished the last 3 minutes at a little bit of a higher speed. Over all I think I did awesome. I am ready for W5D3 on Monday!

Usually steve and I run our 2nd run of the week on wed night but he wasn't feeling well so we just pushed it back til today. I made a new play list this past weekend and tried it out today and it made running a breeze! Can't wait to do the 20 min run on saturday and pump it out.

Week 5 Day 2 is done! And I'm just like everyone else, totally amazed that I ran for 8 minutes straight without too much difficulty. That doesn't mean that I'm not intimidated by the 20 minutes on day 3 though. I'm afraid that I won't be able to do it. But extremely excited to see if I can. I may just amaze myself!

Wow! I ran for EIGHT MINUTES STRAIGHT! Twice! I can't believe it! I'm not sure if I've ever done that in my life! Eight minutes wasn't nearly as long as I thought it was going to be! I remember how hard those first 3 minute segments were, but now tacking that on to the fives I didn't Monday wasn't so horrible at all!

I'm getting it, I'm really getting it! Yay!

This morning when I woke up I took a look at the plan and thought ... "Yikes! 8 minutes. That's a long run. Should I try it? Am I ready?" I almost decided to do 1 minute walks and 4 minute runs (Rookie Running) but decided to take the chance. I was thinking I could always change it up if it was really too hard. Jogged the first 5, and thought it was hard. Thought about changing, but during the walk I thought, I need to keep going. So I went for the 8. I DID IT! As I moved past 6, moved past 7, and approached 8 ... I kept thinking I've made it this far, I can do it. Keep going, keep going. Don't quit now. OMG - I DID IT!!. The rest was easy. The last 5 minute run, all I could think was I jogged 8 minutes! 5 is a cinch.

In fact, during my warm up, I jogged 1 minute, walked a minute, jogged 30 seconds, walked 30 seconds, etc. Then, I made myself walk 5 more minutes to make sure I cooled down properly.

I'm scared about the 20 minute run, but I figure if I go slow ... maybe I can do it. We'll see

Woohoo! Another day bites the dust! lol. Just finished W5D2!! I felt really good!! I was surprised how well I felt with the 8 minute intervals. I actually wish it wasn't a 5 minute walk in between. I'm actually excited to attempt the 20 minute run on Wednesday. I'm trying secretly not to psych myself out. I just can't believe that I will be running non stop for 20 minutes. Bring it on!!

Happy running everyone!

Congrats, DONGINZU. Sounds like W5D3 is going to be no problem for you!

CRAUDI, my muscles get pretty sore and stiff if I go to slow too. It's a big balancing act between going fast enough for my legs and slow enough to keep control of my breathing. We'll figure it out though!

I'm going to run W5D2 again tomorrow so I can build a bit more confidence for W5D3. Sometimes I get down on myself for not staying on schedule, but then I just look at all that I've accomplished. I think it's pretty incredible how far I've come, and all of you have come far as well. We'll be at the finish line before you know it!

W5d2 this morning and I was surprised that I could handle 8 minutes without feeling like I had done much more than 5 mins. Very intimidated by d3 so I decided, as I had a little extra time, that I would keep going past the end of the second run into the cooldown period and see how far I could get. Made it all the way to 13 mins and then started cooldown. Now I feel like the jump isn't quite so far and if I can do 8 then 13, I should be able to handle a straight 20. Fingers crossed!

W5D2 was interesting. The first 8 min run I was trying to just take it slow...well it seemed to be too slow because my legs were hurting from going slowly (weird) and my heart rate was like 140 or something! So the next 8 mins I really pushed it...maybe a bit too much because by 6 mins in my legs were yelling at me. I had to slow down a bit, but I finished strong for the last minute! And I worked myself! And I even went for an extra 20-30 seconds at the end of the run, just for good measure! :)

Nervous-ish about day 3, but I've read that thread already and it sounds like it's alllllll mental! I can't wait to see how it goes!!! 8 minutes is the LONGEST I've ever ran in one shot...at least that I can remember...so that counts as my longest ever!!!! And 20 minutes! What a jump for a PR in time! :D Yayyyy!

Finding balance.

Week 5 Day 2 done this morning....I think the reason I had troubles with Day 1 was that I did it after working a 12 hour shift...Fresh this morning & no issues. Need to time Day 3 right for sure!

Week 5 day 2 down! I went right after work bc it rained all day w/ no signs of letting up. It was a light drizzle when I got home, so that seemed like my best time to go.

The rain was so light it didn't bother me at all. It was 78 degrees - at least 15 degrees cooler than what I've been running in lately!! That made a big difference it seemed to take forever to warm up my legs and hips. But I felt like was hitting my stride again and I got thru both 8 minute runs (very slowly) with no problems!!

Good job, llama and everyone else finishing this run!!

Finished this today. I feel like my pace is soooo slow when I'm doing these longer runs. I guess I think if I go too fast I'll quit at the end of them from being too tired. Onto D3 on Thursday! This was the one goal I set-I have to make it to W5D3! So I'll be there soon!

The start of the run I was all, "Why am I out here? I could totally be in bed." I couldn't seem to get my breathing right or my stride. It just wasn't coming together at all. But it settled down finally and sorted itself out.

Extra points for not going back to the car and saying, "forget this. I'll do it tomorrow." The run back (I do out & backs because I don't have any loops.) was much bettter and by then I was glad I'd run.

Now I hear the next run is a 20 minute one. Wish I hadn't looked at that lol.

I did it, I was very surprised how much easier it was than I had actually built it upon my head to be! Still think I need to figure out how to breathe better, it never feels like I am getting enough air in, and also any incline just kills me, but ........ I did it

I had one of those miserable runs where I hated every minute and never could get in the right frame of mind, but somehow I slogged through it. I'm not exactly brimming with confidence about the 20 minute run tomorrow, but I'm going to try to suck it up and get it done.

I love running and cake too. And people can tell when you have been running, and they can tell when you have eaten too much cake!

Finished W5 D2 today! I can't believe how much easier it was than 5 minutes... think I'll do it one more time to make sure I'm ready for the 20 min on D3!
And I think I do love running as much as cake... it's just I've known cake alot longer!

Running 20 minutes probably works off the equivalent of a small piece of cake. Kind of cancel each other out.

thanks for the encouragement! and did you say cake? mmmm... cake. i will declare myself a true runner, through and through, on the day that the experience of running 20 consecutive minutes is as enjoyable to me as the experience of a piece of cake. who knows, perhaps that day will be tomorrow...! :)
