I'm in the hight desert near Palm Springs. When it's 115 degrees outside the only thing fun is staying inside to read or get spark points. But we are lucky enough to have a remodeling job in Lake Arrowhead and there are many wonderful things to do there...walking around the mountain and going to the village are just two.

I live in Paradise. Yes it's a real town and It's a small community east of Chico. There's always something going on downtown in the park. Concerts, Craft Fairs, Quilt Show, Bar-B-Que, parade, you name it we have it. Being outside, enjoying mother nature.

I live in San Fran. and I like walk down the hill from my place to the Embarcadero. The walk up is not as fun, but if I keep it up I'm gonna have buns of steel. But if I'm not feeling that ambitious I walk down the street up to Coit Tower. The view either way is amazing!

I live in Ventura County. There is wonderful hiking all over. One great hike is an 8.3 mile trail through the mountains, ending up at the beach (Sycamore Canyon). I did it a couple of weeks ago. I went with someone else and dropped a car off at the beach, then drove to the trailhead and hiked down. A great day! I saw some people posting from the Pasadena area. We used to live there. I love the Huntington Library!
This may sound silly, but I also love to miniature golf! emoticon

I live in the perfect area of the foothills. In Apple Hill. In the fall, the apple ranches have all sorts of wonderful things to do. I am 45 minutes from South Lake Tahoe and the ski resorts, and 40 minutes from Sacramento and all the fun things to do there. In our area though we are blessed with National forests and lakes, plenty of walking trails, and many small historical towns to meander through.

Iam a native born Californian born and raised in Ukiah. For fun i can go 45 miles to the coast. When you reach the coast you come into Fort Bragg. They have many shops and anique stores to browse, the Skunk tran you can ride and miles of beachs along the ocean you can walk, and watch the seals or the whales when they migrate. If you head south you can visit MENDOCINO, with all of their shops and seafood eateries, this is also whdere they filmed MURDER SHE WROTE AND A BEATLES MOVIE along with other films. Alot of sight seeing to do especially if you spend a couple of days in the area.
When you get back to the 101 hiway and head north you go thru the beautiful redwoods and all the old logging towns till you come to EURIKA which is an old logging town, much to see and do in Northern California.

I live in NE Los Angeles so we are close to downtown, Hollywood & the Valley, as well as Pasadena and the Angeles National Forest. We do a lot of sightseeing in the different neighborhoods of the city as well as attend cultural events, and do summer and fall camping, although right now our regular camping spots are still on fire.

I live in the East Bay area. There is always something happening in town. Otherwise you can usually find a local winery for wine tasting. If you want more activity there is bike trails through town, a reservoir you can fish, hike, and camp. A little up the freeway is shopping. A little further west is an observatory. From there you can go into SF for lots of shopping, site seeing, museums, etc. Or you can go southwest to more beaches and camping. I have lived in a couple of other places in CA and each has its own city and/or country things to do. Usually not more than a couple of hours away at most.

We have a bike/walking trail that used to be where the train came through town. It is lighted and has emergency phones~just in case! It's fun to ride from one end of town to the other end. Plenty of places to stop for a picnic or shop! Be sure to bring your backpack in case you find something you can't live without!

I live in San Diego and am a huge animal lover, so I spend a lot of time at the Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. Hubby and I have annual passes so, it's basically a free day out, unless we get something to eat. It's great to see all the wonderful animals and get the fresh air.

Make it a good day,

One of my favorite places is Avalon on Catalina Island. You can take a boat from Long Beach or San Pedro for the day, or stay for a couple of nights.

There is lots of physical activity. There are only a few cars on the island, so you walk everywhere. You can also walk or run on the beach, or walk up to Wrigley Memorial. There is a golf course, horseback riding, snorkeling, and kayaking. There are several hiking the trails right on the town border.

I've never camped there, but heard it is amazing - you are dropped by boat on the other side of the island, on the beach - no phones, TV, technology, etc...

I hope that my kids and I will get to go this summer for a few days.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could...

Walking on the beach (20 miles away); hiking in the hills or Mt. Tam or Muir Woods (20 miles away); walking trails through the hills, water areas; San Francisco: plays, concerts, museums, CA Academy of Sci., shopping, food (35 miles away); our own small downtown along the river; Wine country/Napa Valley (40 miles away); hikes on the family ranch next to the hills in wine country; the park 3 blocks away! Sooo much to do! I purposely wrote all of this to inspire myself to get out and enjoy this wonderful place I live!!!!

Well I live in the northern most part of the state on the coast and this area has lots of pristine forests and beaches to explore. This is mostly a outdoor recreational place, so if you like fishing, surfing, hiking, or any number of those things to do, then this is the place to be.

Living in San Diego county of course the beaches are a go to in the summer, but another thing I love to do is go to the San Diego County Fair that runs June through July. People of all ages go for the rides, the food, the little retail booths, the deep fried snickers or twinkies, have some beer with the over priced burgers.. it's a carnival well suited for the young and old. It brings all kinds of people together to celebrate the fun, carefreeness, and laziness of summer. Also, the museums in Balboa Park are great too! Great things to see and discover for the family if you won't be going out of town for the summer.

I have enjoy here at my daughters, watching all the wild cotton tail rabbits, playing in yard, drinking out of a kiddy pool she put out for them. a family of squirrels moved in and they are sure fun to watch, they like to chase the rabbits. she lives in Barstow, on the desert. we put out 5 lbs of bird seed and it was gone in 1 day. lots of doves, sparrows, black birds, wrens.

I spent most of my life in Colusa County and still enjoy going home and enjoying trips to Chico, Sacto, even recently Nevada county and Reno...what a GREAT state! right now I live on the Northcoast...EXTREME North...lol...there's lots to do here... not like home close to shopping or concerts or anything, Medford OR is our shopping destination and its several hours away...BUT...the redwoods are amazing to explore, the rivers here are pristine and great for day trips and camping, the beach is SO much fun and the trails all over seem neverending, i am constantly finding people who have lived here forever and are still finding NEW places to explore...last night we enjoyed a campfire and today i've been enjoying our yard, about an acre, on the edge of a forest, I found berries i didn't recognize and just looked them up online...salmonberries and thimbleberries...and there is a sweet little bird family in one of my birdhouses the parents are constantly flying in and out and with each entry a chirping chorus of babies erupts...I enjoyed reading about everyones activities and locations thanks for the FUn thread!

We definitely live in the best state in the union. Lots of sunshine and lots of things to do no matter where you live.
In Marin I love to hike Mt Tam, walk the beach at Stinson or Ft Conkrite or sit back enjoy a glass of ice tea and the view of the bay.

This time of year and throughout the summer there are free concerts at various parks in the greater Sacramento area... usually on Fridays or Saturdays. There are lots of fun runs and always a new art exhibit at the Crocker Art Museum (Maxfield Parrish is there now.)

We're close to wine country - not just Napa, the up in the foothills as well.

I have lived on the Central Coast for 7 years. Before that, I was a girl from the OC - born and raised. Santa Barbara has wonderful shopping and restaurants. The beaches here are wonderful and uncrowded. Santa Inez has lots of terrific wineries. Solvang is fun too!

But of course, I love the cool breezy weather and the golf courses most of all.

I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.

I live in the central valley, while there are many different vents that come up or through the area it's a pretty quiet place with not a lot around here but within 2 hours I can be at the coast or in the mountains. I Love it!

I live in the Gold Country (Sierra Foothills). So, I do lots of walking through the old Gold Rush towns, wandering through the hills, and swimming in the rivers (during the Summer).

I live in the east bay (Walnut Creek) and I love it. There are tons of restaurants and shops to walk to in the downtown area. It is only a 30 min drive to San Francisco and there is always tons of stuff to do there. We go to the DeYoung Museum, the CA Academy of Arts, the Coservatory of Flowers, the Japaneses Tea Gardens, Pier 39, the Ferry building (they have a nice farmer's mkt), Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, Union Square.....so many things I can't even list them all.

I also live on the Grapevine. I love the snow in the winter. I am from Indiana and sometimes miss it. My husband and I are both sort of disabled so we are unable to hike and ski, etc. but we do love to drive through the mountains. One of our favorite outings is to drive from Frazier Park through Lockwood Valley over the mountains to Ojai and then on over to the beach, many times drive up to Santa Barbara and onto the pier for some sun and people watching. What I love about where we live is that we are in the mountains but so close to the dessert, the beach, the city, etc.

We live on the Palos Verdes Peninsula at the southern end of the Santa Monica Bay.

The weather here is great most of the year, so we do lots of outdoor activities.

One of our favorite things to do is bike around the peninsula. Points of interest include the Point Vicente Lighthouse, the Wayfarers Chapel (designed by the son of Frank Lloyd Wright), and Abalone Cove Shoreline Park.

We also love to bike to Redondo Beach and jump on the Strand bike path. We usually bike to breakfast in Redondo or Manhattan Beach, but we have taken it all the way to the end at Will Rogers State Beach, then continued up PCH for an afternoon at the Getty Villa.
www.getty.edu/visit/

We are so fortunate to have many places to walk and hike around the peninsula. Visit the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy website for information on the nature preserves and group hikes.
www.pvplc.org/
The Sierra Club also offers group hikes for all levels.

Other outdoor activities include horseback riding and competitions, tennis, surfing, volleyball, golf, etc.

I live on the Grapevine and my favorite thing to do is cross-country skiing on Mount Pinos in the winter or I drive an hour and a half to Shirley Meadows area. I also love hiking in to hot springs. I have cycled the entire coast from British Columbia to Ensenada with a couple of missing pieces (WA peninsula which I'm due to complete soon)I also kayak every chance I get. Just got back from the Colorado River. Lot's of hiking in this area too for when my foot problems are under control. And there's always dirt biking in Hungry Valley.

Living in Sacramento there are so many things you can do for fun...Bike the American Bike Trail (http://www.saccycle.com/bikewaymaps/map6.
htm) or the great trails in Roseville/Granite Bay, a plethora of parks, great farmer's markets during the week and weekends, Jazz Festival, State Fair, great concert venues, plus so much more. Then there is traveling an 1 1/2 to the east is Tahoe or Reno and to the west is the Bay Area. Sacramento is in a great location for many different activities...one reason I moved back after being gone for 5 years.

There is so much to do in Southern CA. For example, the beach is just 20 min. away from me and I love walking my two doxies or just sitting and watching the waves. However, it doesn't take much to get me off my rear to walk along the shore.

We have all sorts of factory outlets close by that walking them and window shopping keeps me moving and entertained.

Right now, the flowers in Carlsbad and Encinitas are in full bloom and such a beautiful and breath-taking sight.

Taking in the animals at the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park is fun and keeps one moving.

I love attending the Orange County Perfoming Arts programs. They present some really great artists.

That's just a few of the many things one can find to do in Southern CA!

the thing I enjoy most when I'm able to go and do it- is go to the beach. I love walking up and down while the water rushes past my feet. it's a good workout too if you go in far enough where when the water comes up its halfway up to your knees and you have to "fight" your way through the water. I miss the beach! I haven't been in a couple years :(

Lort - Paso Robles is beautiful. My aunt lives there and has forever.

In Temecula, we're lucky to have miles of hiking trails with periodic strength training stations along the Temecula river. I sometimes go with the dog and sometimes alone. I get more strength exercises done without the four-legged buddy!

I live in Orange Co. and I have three sons, so we have to have annual passports to Disneyland, I do as many triathlons, half marathons, 5k's, fun runs, as our budget will allow. I LOVE going to my oldest son's swim meets. My middle son can't wait until his skill level lets him join the team emoticon . Brea Farmer's Market is huge hit with my kids (every Tuesday)I have also participated in historical re-enactment for over 10 years. Time span is from 650AD to 1650 AD. I travel ALL over southern CA, Nevada, and once a year to AZ for that. Nothing like fencing (or mostly chasing my younger son these days) in full Elizabethan dress to get your heart rate up or feeling like your a hair shy of heat stroke on occasion emoticon

I live in a two bedroom house in Huntington Beach, and my boyfriend was so generous as to let me take over our entire second bedroom all for my... ART SUPPLIES! That's what I do for fun, pretty much constantly. I knit, crochet, cross stitch, spin, do ceramics, printmaking, collaging, mosaic, paint, draw, journal, fuse glass, paint furniture, you name it, I do it, and I have massive amount of artsy materials to prove it.

I've been trying to pay for my habit by selling things on etsy.com - you should check it out. It's a whole community of handmade art - royaboya.etsy.com

Anyways, right now I am in the middle of a cross stitch pattern of a few moose that I bought in Alaska, I am just finishing a crocheted blanket/pillow set, and I am working on a knitted beanie for my mom!

Travel throughout the state in the summers. I plan on doing the redwoods this summer.

I live in LA County and work in Orange County. I have an annual pass to Disneyland. I walk to the store near my house whenever possible. I see movies, eat out, shop (not so much anymore), and like to visit art musuems. I go to the Pomona Art Walk once a month.

At home:

Gardening--both flowers and vegetables. Digging in the dirt, planting trees, clearing brush (I love a good bonfire!)

Walking on our lovely back road.

On an outing:

Walking on the beach, or through some of our forest trails.

I also love going to Desolation Wilderness, although we don't live in El Dorado county anymore. That's where we love to take our annual camping trip with the family.

Orange County:
Walking at any beach and Balboa Island. Some beaches have boardwalks, makes it nice if you don't feel like walking in the sand. Kayaking is also available at Newport Bay. There are also some great bike trails nearby.
The local mountains have pretty good skiing, so I hear. I personally don't ski.

Wow! I'm saving this thread. You all are great travel guides. Thanks PhotoFit1946 and King*Get*Fit for the great list of to dos. Great idea Yoshimi1.

I like rafting the Merced in the spring time, hiking Mission Peak in Fremont, and the dog beach at Ft. Funston (for just a few).

For fun I do needlework, (cross stitching to be exact). Being retired I am able to do this anytime and anywhere.

Yosemite: Hiking and camping and driving and playing in the river and viewing. This summer some of my friends and I are going to climb half dome.

Soqouias: Snow shoeing

Monterey Bay: The aquarium, swimming and boogie boarding, Natural Bridges State Park tide pools and Big trees and something I haven't done yet is the mystery spot.

San Jose: Is just fun to walk around the down town area and you can buy a round trip transit pass and ride all day. It is a fun way to see more of the city.

San Francisco: China town, Crissy Field, Golden Gate Bridge, the piers, the zoo, the beach, cliff house, and so much more.

Oakland: The LDS temple has beautiful gardens and is decked out in lights at Christmas times. Often they have free performances. Berkley and a wonderful museum that the name escapes me now.

Since we all live in this magnificent state, I
thought it would be a good idea to know what you all do for "active" fun in your town, or area in California...this way when we all go traveling we have no excuses for not getting out there & get some exercise!!

I have a few...
(El Dorado County)
Rafting on the American river (Middle Fork)
Snow Tubing at Echo Summit
Hiking Desolation Wilderness & the Pacific Crest Trail
Hiking along the American River
Swimming at Rock Creek, and at all the lakes in Desolation (except for bloodsucker lake - ewwww)

So come on People...what do YOU do for fun???

Success is to be
measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome....Booker T. Washington
