This was fun! Rory - you are terrific; thank you! I have enjoyed reading the posts and leaving a few! Those biscotti sound amazing!
I am checking the flight delays, impatiently waiting for my daughter's return from law school. I will be at John Wayne around 6 tonight if anyone happens to be there!! Hopefully, her flight will be close to on time (the first one was already delayed almost 2 hours and they gave her the full search... poor kid!). We will be enjoying a very healthy dinner and a bunch of catching up tonight, boot camp and gym tomorrow morning, and cooking a duck on Christmas. I'd also like to see Sherlock Holmes if we can - its fun to see how many folks end up at the movies on a holiday evening.
Good health and good cheer to each and everyone!

Thanks so much for sharing the story of the Christmas star!

I really enjoyed this challenge and I also enjoyed getting to know some of my California team-mates as we posted. It has also helped me stay focused and 'on track' through the holidays [which obviously aren't over].

Thanks so much for setting up this challenge - you are setting a great example of team leadership this season. It's a really busy time for everyone but I wish more people had found time to participate and at the same time, I'm really happy for everyone who did!

Have a Happy, Healthy Holiday weekend - get some Fabulous Friday Fitness - enjoy a Stress-free/Sugar-free Saturday and a Spectacularly Sensational Sunday!!

A Very Merry Christmas goodie for all ..
A recipe, hint, idea or chat. if you prefer....

Question~ emoticon

I had fun getting to know you from this challenge..What are your thoughts?

rory moment:
What else does this Christmas star mean?
There are millions of stars up there in the sky, but there is only one star that is primarily used by navigators. That is the North Star, the polar star, often referred to as “Polaris.” It is the only star that is right above the axis of the earth. … To find the North Star, you look at the Big Dipper. You take the alpha and the beta of that and follow the line of sight to the Little Dipper. From the Little Dipper, it points to the North Star that unlocks the heavens.

The Wisemen came from Persia. The year was 7 B.C. That year, there was an unusual movement of planets in the sky. Jupiter, the large planet, was moving in conjunction with Saturn, the star that symbolized the protection of Israel. These scientific astrologers asked, “What does this mean? What does this star mean for us?” We ask the same question today.. Amen

I have many fond memories but I think my favorite was when my sister was about 5 years old. First, though, I have to explain that my mother was the consummate shopper - we used to joke that she could smell a sale all the way across town and that she could squeeze a nickle until it started spitting pennies!

It's funny because I don't even remember what the item was but it was something I had really wanted that my mom had gotten for me. I opened the package and was thrilled, then my little sister blurted out

"Yeah and it wasn't even on sale!"

Out of the mouths of babes, haha! Both my sister and I remember that exchange very clearly with great fondness! And yes, both of us were 'trained to shop' from the get-go.

Favorite Christmas memory from childhood: When I was 10 years old, a nurse broke the rules and let us all in to see my father (he had been injured in a mill accident the previous August). I don't know why they were so strict about Visitor Rules then -- no one under 16 admitted. It was the first moment I was convinced he was really alive since the accident. Bless that nurse!

Let's walk!

Fondest memory of Christmas when you were young?

I recall the year when we got a silver tree with a revolving light because the year before we had a small fire with our real tree. My dad felt this was the safest way... but to my surprise.. after a fresh snowfall our floor to ceiling wiindow lit up a spectacular reflection outside on the snow of the brilliant colors, it was truly amazing. The cars were slowly going by our home enjoying this beautiful display on Commonwealth ave..

:rory note
Celebrating Sweet and Steamy Christmas Pudding
Figgy pudding — aka plum pudding, plum porridge, Christmas pudding and steamed pudding — is chockablock with dried fruit but tastes nothing like fruitcake.
While most of us have sung about figgy pudding since our kindergarten Christmas pageants, my guess is that most of us have never eaten the treat, maybe even have never laid eyes on it. We don't have much of a Christmas pudding tradition in America, but the way I see it, now — 4 days before the holiday — is the perfect time to start a pudding revolution.)
Figgy pudding — aka plum pudding, plum porridge, Christmas pudding and steamed pudding — is a quintessentially British sweet with a history that might go back to Shakespeare's time. We know it was around in the mid-1600s, because that's when the English Puritans banned it — and Christmas, too.

It will be a pretty quiet holiday for us, too - no plans to go to any events at this point and just going to spend a little time with family, which will be very nice. Since a couple of puzzles and games are among the presents for the youngest one, I have a feeling I know what we'll be doing on Christmas afternoon, haha!

We're staying home for the holidays. They're predicting a warm, sunny Christmas -- maybe we'll talk Lola the pup for a long walk along the LA River on Christmas.

I just have a couple of things to do to get ready for the holiday -- it will be a quiet one for us.

Thanks for sharing that link Kris! It made me smile. Here's the link in clickable form: www.elion.ee/docs/joulukaart/eng/

My office received LOTS of treats and I managed to resist for the most part. I promised myself I would only eat "the good stuff." There's not point in gaining weight over mediocre food, especially during the holidays. As long as I could convince myself that it really wasn't that special, it was easier to say no thanks.

I've got to have a plan to keep on track during my time off from work. I can't treat ten days in a row as if it were a weekend. I hope the weather stays dry so I can do a lot of walking!

Let's walk!

Happy Hanukkah indeed - tonight is 'first candle'
emoticon
To answer your question....well.....I always have good intentions to stay away from sweets this time of year and generally do pretty well - for instance, I abstained from the 'cookie exchange' at Jazzercise last week and only had a small portion of a sugar-free, super-low-calorie dessert at a Christmas party last week.

But....don't you hate that?.....my dear brother and his wife send a Christmas package each year and bless their hearts, they really mean well but it always contains sweets, even though I've suggested I'd rather not have them. I did 'share' with my husband and there wasn't a big quantity to begin with.....but last night there was an open bag of cookies with 8 tiny cookies left - I started saying I'd have just one, which expanded to 3, which expanded to 5 [one 'serving' according to the package] and darned if those last 3 cookies somehow jumped out of the bag into my mouth, totally against my will - honest!
emoticon
It was 'only' 200 calories and I did not go over my allotted daily target but that's not really the point - it's the sugar for one thing and my complete and utter lack of control. I'm like a junkie in a drug store and can manage my addiction just so long - never did learn the concept of 'just one' or 'taste in moderation,' I guess, haha! Anyway, they are gone and next time I will do what I've done in the past, which is ask my husband to hide the temptation somewhere.
emoticon
Amazingly enough, this morning the scale showed the lowest weight I've seen in quite awhile so I'm hoping this is the last of my holiday indulgences!
emoticon

Latke recipe:
This is one of the most famous of Jewish foods and a specialty of Hanukkah. The latkes are served as an appetizer, as a side dish, and even for tea with a sprinkling of confectioners' sugar. They can be marvelous if properly prepared, just before eating.
Ingredients-
2 lbs (1 kg) potatoes
2 large eggs
salt
oil for frying
Yield
6
Peel and finely grate the potatoes. Put them straight into cold water, then drain and squeeze them as dry as you can by pressing them with your hands in a colander. This is to remove the starchy liquid, which could make the latkes soggy.

Beat the eggs lightly with salt, add to the potatoes, and stir well. Film the bottom of a frying pan with oil and heat. Take serving-spoonfuls, or as much as 1/4 cup (50 ml), of the mixture and drop into the hot oil. Flatten a little, and lower the heat so that the fritters cook through evenly. When one side is brown, turn over and brown the other.

Lift out and serve very hot.
add black pepper, chopped parsley, and finely chopped onion to the egg and potato mixture.

Adding 4 tablespoons of potato flour binds the fritters into firmer, more compact cakes, easier to handle but not quite as lovely to eat. Sour cream or applesauce on the side..

growing up, gifts were mostly homemade. I'm a bit shocked at all the money that seems to be thrown around during this season

Thanks so much for the great quotes!!

It's not exactly specific to this holiday but the quote that helps me through this time of year and the rest of the year is this:

God grant me the
Serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference!

Somehow these words help me deal with the good, bad and indifferent of the holidays and all the 'busy stress' associated with them!

A Very Merry Team Monday!

Scrambling to finish details but imagine 6 days to go...
A Very Merry emoticon goodie daily..
Perhaps a family recipe, hint, idea or just chat..you decide...

Question~ Is there a quote that has had an impact on your life during the holidays?

My favorite is by Longfellow:
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Quotes are a unique way to describe the way we think about something, to describe the way we feel. There is something about a good quote from someone respected (and sometimes even from someone unknown) that is just really, really inspiring. Enjoy!

There's nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child."
~ Erma Bombeck (1927-1996), American author and humorist.

Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas."
~ Peg Bracken.

The earth has grown old with its burden of care But at Christmas it always is young, The heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fair And its soul full of music breaks the air, When the song of angels is sung."
~ Phillips Brooks (1835-93), American Episcopal bishop, wrote 'O Little Town of Bethlehem'.

Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given--when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes."
~ Joan Winmill Brown, American author and editor.

This is the message of Christmas: We are never alone."
~ Taylor Caldwell (1900-1985), English novelist.

Remember, if Christmas isn't found in your heart, you won't find it under a tree."
~ Charlotte Carpenter.

There are no strangers on Christmas Eve."
~ Adele Comandini and Edward Sutherland. Michael O'Brien (Charles Winninger), Beyond Tomorrow, after proposing that the partners invite three strangers to dinner (1940).

To the American People: Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think on these things, there will be born in us a Savior and over us will shine a star sending its gleam of hope to the world."
~ Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), American president. Presidential message (December 25, 1927).

Okay Lynda! Now I feel compelled to buy quinoa on my next shopping trip. At my office Halloween potluck I tried a co-worker's quinoa dish and loved it. I didn't realize I could prepare it in a crockpot. Now I'm off to follow Rory's links to Charlotte Church. Thanks!

I wish everyone the best this week as we slide into Hanukkah, Christmas and the New Year - wow, can you believe we only have 2 weeks left for 2011??

Not sure if this counts as a 'recipe' or merely a hint/tip but thought I'd mention a 'secret weapon' I discovered and recently re-discovered again - It's quinoa [if you're not familiar with it, it's pronounced 'keen-wah' and it's a grain from South America that was a favorite with the Inca people]

I've made it periodically as a substitute for rice but it's actually much healthier than rice and has a unique taste and texture that appeals to me. For the holiday season, I got some RED quinoa and made a batch mixed with 'rainbow' quinoa. Both are harder to find and I've never seen either in regular chain groceries - I bought this batch at a local health food store called Mother's Market but have seen it at other stores that specialize in 'healthy foods' - of course, the regular quinoa, which is white, is much easier to find - but also not as festive for this time of year!

Because I was going to a potluck, I decided to take a healthy stir fry and quinoa - I divided the stir fry into two bowls, one with chicken and the other was just veggies. Of course, being my grandmother's descendant, I made enough for the entire Russian army, just like Nana always did, so there was lots to bring home - that was part of my plan because it goes so well with just about anything. It has a somewhat neutral flavor so it's ideal to mix with other things in a 'one-dish meal' or can be eaten just by itself - anything you can do with rice or mashed potatoes can be done with quinoa. Here are some ways I've fixed quinoa:

1) Mix with stir fry, with and without chicken
2) Mix with chicken breasts basted lightly with teriyaki sauce [yum!]
3) Mix with tuna or salmon, with or without vegetables
4) Added to soup - virtually any kind of soup that we eat can be enhanced by quinoa
5) Eat it cold as a salad - you can mix it with raisins, mandarin orange slices, apple pieces, cranberries, onions, berries or tomatoes - pretty much anything you would put in a salad goes well with quinoa.
6) Add it to tacos, burritos, enchiladas or anything else you might add corn meal or any other grain
7) I've had muffins that were made with quinoa but I've never made them myself
8) Of course, you can also put gravy or any other kind of sauce you like on them
9) It's also good with melted cheese mixed in
10) Some friends of mine like to sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over it and have quinoa for dessert or breakfast, sometimes adding a little milk like they would with oatmeal. You can spice it with all sorts of things from curry to nutmeg or rosemary to chili peppers, depending on your taste preferences.

It's easy to fix - I just toss some in the crock pot with liquid of some sort and heat on high for an hour or on low for a couple of hours. You can also fix it on the stovetop in about 20-25 min - depending on what I'm going to do with it, I might use plain water, chicken broth, orange or apple juice, vegetable broth, etc. Some stores like Fresh N Easy have individual microwave-ready packages that are ready in 30 seconds and can be stored in the cupboard until it's cooked.

The best part is in addition to being so versatile, it's very filling - one cup is 180 calories and keeps me satisfied for hours. It's a great thing to fix for a quick lunch or dinner - cook up a batch and portion it out for up to a week in various ways.

Anyway, end of my sales pitch, haha! Hope everyone has a great holiday week!

My hope for the holidays is that my Guy and I get back in sync. Failing that, I've just got to realign my expectations so I won't be disappointed so often.

I've lost most of my family and I haven't been able to keep up with many friends, so gifts aren't really an issue for me this year.

I've really been enjoying this thread. Thanks for keeping it fun for us Rory.

Good morning!!! Most of my gifts are wrapped. I shopped online this year. It was convenient. BUT I found I bought too much. I think not having the item in-hand did not help me. Also the lure of the deals online got me. So , next year, I need to beware! My family will gather Jan 5th -10th in Anaheim. My son and DIL will come from NY. My DH and I will head down south. My youngest son and DIL live in Anaheim and have a brand new baby to share with us. So a belated gathering but all the same a wonderful event. Part of the season is about family and love, it doesn't matter when or where just so it happens!

Wow, hard to believe next weekend is Christmas weekend - and the week after that is 'next year' - time is flying by!

Rory, I have purchased most of the presents I plan to get - got some running clothes and books for DH, send some dried fruit and books to my brother & sister-in-law, got a gift certificate for Jazzercise for my surrogate daughter - hmmm, are you detecting a theme here? My adult son and I have always had an agreement that he will mostly get either cash or gift cards so he can shop at the after-Christmas sales and get what he wants, plus the $$ goes much further that way. I will give my surrogate daugjavascript:void(0)hter a gift card, too. It sounds boring and impersonal but everyone is happy with that arrangement and $$ goes SOOOO much further AFTER the holiday when clearance sales start. I will get my sister some phone minutes - she loves to gab but is always running out of minutes so she will really appreciate that gift!

That leaves my surrogate granddaughter, who is 7-1/2. I will definitely get her a couple of board games and "gift certificates" for some activities for the week after Christmas, when she'll spend time with me while her mom is at work. We love spending time together so it will be a 'present' for both of us to do that, esp since I haven't been able to see her as much this year as I would like.

What is everybody else getting for family members and/or friends?

I'm a big fan of practical gifts, too - thanks for the list!!

I also don't really have a favorite Christmas Carol - pretty much whichever one is playing at the moment is my 'current favorite,' haha!

And speaking of 'practical,' I heard something on KPCC this morning [an NPR affiliate station] that really sounded great to me - instead of trying to decide between an artificial tree, a cut tree or a 'living tree' that will probably die within a few weeks or months, there is a company that RENTS Christmas trees! They deliver them and set them up, then come back after the season is over and pick them up - they re-use the trees for a couple of years, then plant them in an area that needs that type of tree, usually local mountain areas.

It costs a little more than the other options but considering the major benefit to the environment, including the eventual opportunity to reforest an area that needs it, I thought it was a fantastic idea. The company URL is livingchristmas.com if you want to take a look - and even though this was a new idea to me, apparently there is more than one company doing it - I probably won't do it this year but will definitely bookmark the site and look into it for next year!

The holiday is just around the corner - wow!

I like all the fun carols I grew up singing at school, especially 'Let it Snow.' It's kinda funny because I've never lived where it snows and I've only been in the snow once or twice in my whole 40 years...

I'm a little bummed today that I got a cold because I need to get started on shopping.

9 days! Yikes!

I don't have one single favorite carol -- if I had to choose, I'd say Silent Night.

I like practical gifts, too. My Guy gave me his car emergency kit: flashlight, blanket, warning reflectors, air compressor for tires, tools, etc. Makes me feel a bit safer this time of year because I drive home after dark.

Imagine 9 days until Xmas . ...
Daily winner

Question: What is your favorite Christmas Carol.?
I love the lil drummer boy..

Practical gift ideas;

TOASTY TOOTSIES Buy thermal socks, and warm slippers for the cold natured one in your family. I'm the cold natured one in my family, and I like to wear socks to bed in the middle of summer!

SUGAR-FREE CANDY BASKET Great for a diabetic but has trouble leaving the sweets alone, (like I do), make a care package of goodies that allowed such as sugar-free candies and fresh fruits and nuts. You will both rest a lot easier.maybe a caseof a favorite diet soda too.

BE THEIR HANDY MAN (OR WOMAN) If you know someone who needs home repairs, car repairs, or something else that they are unable to do, do it for them as a gift. If you don't have the skills, consider hiring a professional for them.

RECREATIONAL GEAR Camping supplies, water bottles, new bicycles...the list just goes on and on in this category. This is a fantastic way to encourage healthy and fun activity in the young and old alike.

Thanks for sharing your memories and recipes - this time of year is somewhat difficult for me in a way because family is scattered all over, parents are deceased and there are so many 'temptations' around - but I do enjoy it nevertheless and this year I'm making a point of avoiding the sugary sweets that seem to trigger cravings for me. Had a nice Christmas party yesterday at noon with my new TOPS group [Take Off Pounds Sensibly] and we played a couple of games - one was an icebreaker to complete questions like 'find someone who mailed more than 25 cards this year' and 'Name Santa's reindeer' - I had my Blackberry with me so we had a good time looking up some of the answers! Then we played a game where we were supposed to identify songs from funny pictures - I worked with a group of people and won a prize - but as it happened, it was a coffee cup with a lid, something I didn't really want or need but one of the ladies in our group indicated she really liked it so I gave it to her. Boy, such a simple gesture and she was SOOOOO grateful, you'd have thought it was $100 or something!

We also had a great time playing Bingo - one guy and his wife kept winning so after 3 or 4 rounds of that, I joked "I want to have HIS card" - he traded with me and darned if he didn't win the next two rounds with my old card! It was great fun and they kept giving their prizes away so everyone on our end of the table got 'something' by the time we went home. It's been a very long time since I went to a party like that so even though it's hard to say that is my 'best' or 'favorite' holiday memory, it certainly is the freshest happy memory at the moment!

I hope everyone else has a great holiday season - and Rory, I think you deserve to WIN THE GOODIE for getting this challenge started - good job!

Question: A memory of your past Christmas to share?

My favorite memory happened 3 years ago...We lost our power in our area from 2 until 9 p.m. I had a ham cooked on the gas stove with a coleman lantern as my light. We laughed turned on the transistor radio & sang songs. Played board games under the candle light. It was the best time for all the family.

rory tip:

When baking cookies, spray both the cookie sheet and parchment paper with PAM No-Stick Cooking Spray. That way, the parchment paper won't slide, and your cookies will be easy to remove from the paper after they're done. Also, be sure to spray your cookie scoop with Pam Butter Flavor to help the dough release easily from the scoop.

rory note:

My guy has already given me my Christmas gift (actually he just gave me the gift he received at his job's holiday party). I always give him gifts on Christmas morning -- I also fill a stocking with his favorite candies which last him for a few months. My boss is also a good friend and in past years she's given gifts to our kitties. Watching them open their toys is probably the most fun we have during the holidays!

We celebrate Hannukah and Christmas but actually celebrate in a little different way than most folks. Rather than getting/giving a bunch of gifts that we don't need or want [and at this point in our lives, we pretty much have everything we need and most of what we want already], we "give" philanthropy gifts throughout the month, starting before Thanksgiving - we give cash to a couple of groups that help feed/clothe needy students and have the tradition of getting small denomination gift cards to donate to a homeless shelter and a group that helps needy families - we also donate to food banks, animal rescue organizations like Best Friends and a few other organizations close to our hearts. This year we bought some books for the school library to honor our deceased parents for the holidays - stuff like that gives me much more pleasure than ordinary 'presents,' even though there's not really much to 'unwrap'

My son and 'surrogate daughter' are both grown and need $$ more than anything so I get them cash or gift cards [boring!] - we have a few children in the family that we give presents and will open those whenever we get together, which might be as much as a week before or after the holiday - so while it might seem chaotic and not very fun for us, it's actually an entire month of giving, love and celebrating the season, and even though almost nothing is actually 'wrapped' we enjoy it much more than we did when we had a more traditional-style celebration.

To each his own, I guess!

We gather at Chistmas eve and hang out until midnight to open the gifts. That's the idea, but around 10 we get too anxious about tearing in to the wrapping to wait another two hours.

Thanks for sharing the poinsettia story, Rory. What are you doing for the holidays? Like Lynda I'll be home. It will just be me and my Guy (and the kitties and puppy). My Guy is full of humbug so there's no Christmas spirit at home. I'm getting my bit of holiday cheer from SparkFriends. Thanks for being there!

What a lovely story about the poinsettia - i had never heard it and found it fascinating!!

Answer to question of the day - I'll be spending the holidays at home - we celebrate both Christmas and Hannukah at our house but my surrogate 'granddaughter' will be spending the 24th & 25th with her dad so we'll celebrate before and after the actual Christmas holiday this year, with just a very small celebration on the actual day. I'm blessed that she will get to spend time with me from the 21st to 23rd and again from the 26th to 1/3 - life's biggest pleasure!! In the middle of all of this, our wedding anniversary is January 1 - this one marks 21 years since we were married! So lots of celebrations this time of year at our house!

I'm looking forward to hearing about everyone else's plans - How about yours, Rory??

Win a goodie till Christmas Eve:..

Question of the day: Home or away for Christmas?

rory tip:

Hint Of Mint Christmas Bauble / Ornament / Decoration
www.youtube.com/watch?v=urUMxJLeZLg

Did you know:

Monday was National Poinsettia Day
and pays tribute to the life and death of the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett, the man who helped introduce the plant to America.

The poinsettia’s ties to Christmas date back to a 16th century Mexican tale about a little girl who was too poor to give a gift in honor of Jesus Christ’s birthday. The story says that she was inspired by an angel to collect a handful of weeds from the side of the road and present them as her offering on the church altar. When placed on the altar, red blossoms and flowers grew from the weeds and became magnificent poinsettias. After that, many religious figures in Mexico used the poinsettias in their holiday festivities. The star shape of the poinsettia is said to represent the Star of Bethlehem.

So far my rain activities [per the plan] have been to walk the dogs this morning with everyone wearing rain coats, including the dogs - went to Jazzercise - did grocery shopping and ran errands - for the rest of the day, will walk the dogs again and probably go to the gym or use the treadmill at home to meet my exercise goal.

Tomorrow will be a repeat of today for the most part but if it REALLY storms hard, I'll hunker down and go out as little as possible until it dries out a little bit!

My Christmas tip for the day is choose Pumpkin Pie for dessert when it's available - the filling contains carotenoids for making vitamin A in the body and fighting free radicals. Pumpkin is also a good source of potassium and fiber. Although most pies are loaded with sugar, pumpkin pie can be made with artificial sweetener instead of sugar for a lower calorie dessert and you can save even more calories by not eating the crust - the filling is the good part anyway, right?

Mmmm! Thanks for the snickerdoodle recipe -- it's a classic!

My prep for rainy weather includes: making sure I have a full gas tank (I hate pumping gas in the rain and gas pumps don't work if there's a power outage), doing the laundry, making sure we've got all the grocery basics covered. Since I'm I member of the gym that's right next door to my office, I came left very early this morning so I could beat the traffic and spend that extra hour doing cardio, rather than sitting in traffic. It works for me!

Let's walk!

Our tips hints & recipes have been right on..
Wow 14 days left till Christmas
Win a goodie daily..

Question of the day: What are your plans during the rainstorm?

rory tip:
Book some 'me time' this Christmas

Finally, no matter how much you love your extended family, too much of a good thing can be a recipe for disaster. Make sure you schedule in some time for yourself, and your immediate family.

Take the dog for a walk, meet friends for coffee, or pack everyone off for the day and enjoy the whole house just to yourself. Your family will thank you for it later.

emoticon Remember Betty Crocker Snickerdoodles.. emoticon Yummy!

Active Time: 10 Minutes
Oven Temp: 350 Degrees
Yield: Makes about 5 dozen 2-inch cookies

Fun to say, to sniff, to eat! "It's one of my happy childhood memories. My mother would be baking when we came home from school and we would have Snickerdoodles hot out of the oven with a glass of milk."

RECIPE INGREDIENTS
1 cup soft shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 3/4 cups sifted Gold Medal flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

DIRECTIONS Mix the shortening, sugar and eggs together thoroughly. Sift the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt together and stir in. Chill dough. Roll into balls the size of small walnuts. Roll in mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and the 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Place about 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake until lightly browned…but still soft. (These cookies puff up at first…then flatten out with crinkled tops.)

And since this is the season when so many of us will be attending parties, I thought I'd share a tip from Jillian Michaels:

"The holiday season is upon us and if you are going to toss back a few cocktails here are a few things you should know. Alcohol is very high in calories. Around 80 cals just for a shot and 90 for a 4oz glass of wine. It dramatically inhibits willpower leading you to eat things you normally wouldn't. It decreases your ability to metabolize fat by 73%. This is because your liver then converts most of the alcohol into acetate. The acetate is then released into your bloodstream and takes precedence over the metabolism of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. So - if you drink don't use sugary mixers. Drink clear alcohol IN MODERATION like a vodka soda / tequila on the rocks or a glass of wine."

I had never heard about the decreased ability to metabolize fat but I checked it out and apparently that statement is totally true! Wow - hope the info helps you avoid some of that holiday weight gain that seems to wait around the corner to jump on all of us.

Hmmmm, baking....

I think baking anything with cinnamon enhances the holiday atmosphere in a home. Sometimes it's just something as simple as snickerdoodles. The great thing about snickerdoodles is the dough can be made in advance and refrigerated. Then, when the time is right you can pop them in the oven to create an instant holiday!

Let's walk!

Ha!! I love a real tree, but I can't carry it or set it up by myself - the fake tree is safer!!! I almost knocked myself out with a new flat screen tv I attempted to install last night...
I did go to the Gem Faire yesterday - found amethyst pendants for lots of my elves!

Oh, thanks for the Gem Fair tip - I didn't know it was going on so I might try to head over when I'm in the area on Sunday - also, there is a little complex in Costa Mesa at Mesa Verde East & Adams with The Piecemakers and they have a bazaar on a lot of Saturdays - I looked at the last one but didn't see anything that I wanted to buy. Have fun with your tree!

I LOVE the energy of the holiday season!! I am going to put up my fake tree, with all kinds of cool decorations from years of finding them, and hope that the new dog doesn't chew on any of it...

The Gem Faire is open at the OC Fairgrounds today thru Sunday - there are GREAT gift ideas there! Some crystal pendants I will be going after as gifts/stocking stuffers! All kinds of loose or strands of beads, stones, etc. if you are the arts 'n crafts type who can make unique jewelry out of them. Pretty beautiful meditation stones, as well.

Happy weekend to everyone!

Yes, being grateful is wonderful. A few years back I noticed coworkers that spent the whole lunch time complaining about all the stuff that was wrong in their lives, then I realized I do that too often also. I've been making changes since. It has made me a much happier person and easier to be around, and guess what? People are nicer to me too! Go figure, nice begats nice.

My husband says the world is a mirror and projects on to you what you project...I like getting older because you learn stuff like this. That's what I'm grateful for---growth. Every day is a chance to learn something new, about me, about other, about how to get along. I'm loving it!

Lynda that is a great idea. I was quite depressed a couple of years ago and I finally decided to do a nightly list of 3 things that made me smile that day. It helped! I spent the end of my day, in bed, thinking of happy things and smiling:-)
Today- I am grateful that I got a new job a couple of weeks ago.

I would like to post a little note about the effectiveness of making a daily Gratitude List - it works like magic and can help us 'get over' the slights and hurt feelings we might have, counteracts any negative thinking or feeling sorry for ourselves, even heals physical problems - if you don't believe me, just try it for yourself!!

There are times when I'm not feeling very grateful and it seems hard to get started making a gratitude list - but what works for me is to just start listing silly or stupid things like 'I'm glad I have shoes' or just try to end my complaints with a countering statement like "My back really hurts BUT at least I can still get out of bed and walk around," which would remind me that many people cannot do those things. Once I make a few of those silly or countering statements, it seems a lot easier to come up with other things I really do feel grateful for.

What are YOU feeling grateful for today??

TOPS is a weight loss support group that has been around longer than Weight Watchers or any of the others - it stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly. In contrast to the commercial programs, You can get more information at www.tops.org - a lot of Sparkers also belong to TOPS for the in-person accountability and face-to-face support, which is why I joined it.

Goriana I love this time of year as well! And thankfully, after being by myself for Christmas for the last three years, I will be with my entire family this year! I cant wait until my daughter gets home from school for her winter break so that we can decorate. I figure I shall wait for her since she hasnt been with me the past few years and we can make cocoa and do the whole thing!
LiveRightNow- I love the idea of Groupons for gifts! That is such a great idea! I think you can also gift Groupon gift cards, right? I would LOVE that!
I really love all the ideas people are adding here!

I am contemplating running a 5k on Christmas Eve, but I just started a new job and have not had time (or the energy) to do my walk/jog intervals, so I may not- but I thought that would be a great way to start the weekend.

@LYNDALOVES2HIKE: I'm a TOPS too! Will you go to San Diego next year for the IRD? I've never been to one and I'm thinking about it, since I'm in So Cal.

He team, I did the most awesome swim yesterday and I get to dance today. Also, I put my Chirstmas tree at the office. It sure looks festive!

If you're part of a group that does a 'gift exchange,' here's an alternate idea:

Our TOPS meeting usually has a small gift exchange but this year we decided to bring 'staple items' to donate to the Senior Center instead - stuff like coffee, sweeteners, coffee filters, napkins, etc. I love the idea because the center has refreshments in the recreation room at a very low cost [where else can you get a 25-cent cup of coffee??]

And hey, don't we all have more than enough of those $5 gag gifts? I like this idea soooo much better!

In response to Goriana's profuse X-mas wishes for the Christians (which felt really non-inclusive to me), I'd just like to add best wishes for a Happy & Healthy Winter & New Year for everyone (Christians & those from all other traditions). Blessings ya'll!!!

Here's one of my favorite healthy eating tips: I like to use cucumber rounds in lieu of crackers & either top them w/ turkey, cottage cheese, etc. or use them with lowfat dips - FUN!

Rory: I love this challenge. I haven't done too much with the California team and this is a great opportunity to get to know the "locals".
This year instead of buying some gifts I am investigating the Groupon site. This allows me to share some certificates for experiences rather than giving more "stuff" that some don't need. I also am participating in the Pennys and Salvation Army endeavor to share with those that have less than I.

Dear Goriana~
Concerning non-Christians celebrating Christmas, as long as one sees the pagan aspects of it, I suppose. However, wishing non-Christians a "Merry Christmas", assuming that everyone is a Christian, (the word Christmas means "Christ's Mass") & basically hijacking this time of the year & ramming it down everyone's throat is offensive to alot of us, myself included.

I'm a former high school teacher & during a faculty/staff X-mas party, when "Santa" (SAINT Nicholas) started giving out gifts, the first person he went to was a Jewish teacher, who jumped out of her seat and shouted, "I'm a JEW." Sadly this nonsense brought someone to that point. Duh!

The world is filled w/ people from all sorts of religious backgrounds and no spiritual leanings and not all of these folks look @ Christmas as secular (which of course it isn't). Spark People is bound to have members of all sorts of backgrounds.

In public forums, like Spark People, this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity by being sure that we ALL feel included, which personally I do not when Christmas is mentioned as a goal date.

Blessings along the journey, ya'll. ~ emoticon

This is my favorite season, and you don't have to be religious to enjoy Christmas. I have some Jewish colleagues that sing Christmas carols, door to door. I'm not religious, but I like the decorations, and the music, and the gift exchange. It's a great time to meet with family and friends. It's just a fun time.

My challenges will be to not be too anxious about trying to get too much done in preparation for the new year and in getting exercise done. I plan to go swimming a couple of times each week and to do some strenght training a couple of times during the week too. Also, I plan not to snack mindlessly and enjoy every bite.

If you're blessed enough to have a job with benefits, this is the time to make sure you've made the most of them before the year ends. Check if you have any remaining floating holidays or other use-it-or-lose-it benefits. You've earned them!

Use coffee filters purchased at the dollar store. They can be used on your scale to weight food. Also, individual portions of nuts, crackers, chips, raisins, etc. can be put on them so that you don't eat too much. Use one to catch your drips from your stirring spoon when cooking.

I have some favorite "helpers" that I give gifts to each year (massage-therapist, hair-stylist, house-cleaners, etc.) - I love these folks! I usually give some kind of candies, along with cash/card...so, this year I got some adorable peppermint scented soaps, with a candy-cane pattern, instead of any caloric items! So far, so good and I've got most of them on SP as well!

Personally, I'd like to see anything that is created for the public group not linked to a specific religion (like Christmas & Christians) - a New Year goal date would be more inclusive. As an interfaith minister, I am not anti-Christian, but rather pro-diversity.

Anyhoo, recognizing that this season is laden with opportunities to overeat, I joined the "Y" and have added two days of weekly workouts @ the gym. As soon as my new bathing suit arrives (the first one I ordered was too big - something new & different! - so I had to send that back & exchange it for a smaller size), I'll also be taking a water aerobics class 2 days a week.I'm trying to find a pair of water aerobic shoes. Do any of you have experience with these?

I've lost 55 lbs using my own meal plans, but have now joined a friend on the eating plan that she is using (Weight Watchers) in order to have more support to keep losing. She weighs 6 lbs less than I do, so that is motivating me to keep going.

Wishing you all a Happy & Healthy New Year! ~ Rev. Cynthia emoticon

Three weeks ago I signed up for a 1/2 marathon in Palm Springs in February. SanDiegoJohn sparked me even though I had vowed to not try another HM and only run "moderately" in 5 and 10k's. I was Sparked to challenge myself through the holidays and stay on a training plan. I have inspired 5 of my friends at school to join me. They are not Sparkpeople yet, but the were "Sparked" and didn't even know it. They probably said, "if that old lady with a titanium hip can do it, so can I"!!!

OK here is something I read that really resonated with me about "Holiday Party Buffet" situations. They recommended NOT loading up a plate, but going back several times. Start with veggies/fruit and some protein (slices of some sort of meat or if your a vegetarian some nice tofu or bean spread) load up on that... then go back for some of the other tasty treats. If you start with the good stuff, your system will be digesting and in a good place with healthy food so that you'll feel happy and healthy. My problem was always that I would be soooo hungry at a party that I would just start eating EVERYTHING until I was stuffed lol! emoticon

I have a 'recipe' to share that's fun for this time of year - if you have a potluck to attend and want to bring a easy and healthy dish that's also festive, mix a little green food coloring in some Greek yogurt [I like Fage Total 0%, which I can get for a really good price at Costco], then stir in some Splenda to taste and strawberries or raspberries to add the red color - very festive and tastes wonderful. It comes out to about 100 calories per 1/2 cup serving!

Idea: shop for gifts at local farmers markets. I just started working at farmers markets selling mini bundt cakes and I can tell you this- the people who work there either make minimal money and need to make sales, or the people that work there are there to sell what they have made. And when you look at the cost, the prices are great to get gifts here. They are usually home made, locally grown or produced, and helpful to the community. While working on Sunday I actually bought a pendant for my daughter at the super-cool stand across from me. The couple was incredibly nice and I am glad I could help them out.

Good deed- when you see someone that is homeless and trying to help another- spread the warmth and help them. A homeless man was at a market I worked the other day and it was so windy all of our tents were flying away. He did what he could to help us keep our tents under control while we tried to take them down. He tried to help us, so I did what I could to help him...I wish others would have done the same.
