This book came out in 2006 but I feel it is relevant now. It is actually my go-to book when I am looking for a housewarming present for people. I am posting this because it is my favorite all-inclusive book about food issues as well as fun recipes (much like Food Matters, but I like the introductory text in this book much better... the recipes in Food Matters are more universal for someone getting into Whole Food eating for the first time though).
It is written by Anna Lappe (her mom wrote Diet for a Small Planet so Anna has been around these food issues her whole life) and Bryant Terry (who noticed the link between institutional racism and nutrition when a Ph. D. history student). Bryant Terry has a new book coming out this spring on vegan soul food. I suppose as a woman of color the environmental justice issues mentioned in this book also struck a nerve with the right that anyone, no matter economic circumstance has a right to eat well.
The writing style here is great with a weaving of sources you can reference as well as web links with information. It advocates for eating whole foods and avoiding overly processed foods. There are great graphics and analogies such as a figure comparing food corporations to nations based on net worth... the Nestle Company is about on par with the United Arab Emirates.
The recipes are are fun with menus that include soundtracks that would be ideal to eat with the food. Not necessarily your basic fare, but fun menus for special occassions or at least fun dishes to make for any meal... Menus include New Millennium Soul Food, Straight-Edge Punk Brunch Buffet, and Mardi Gras Grub.
