You should check a Spark member by the name of RUSSELL_40. He's done *amazing* things with his diabetes and heart condition through his diet. He's very straightforward about how he's accomplished this. He frequents at least some of the LC forums, and will jump in on the open forums when we haven't tried the patience of the "powers who be" too much! lol

He's a real fount of good info.
Look him up.

I was told my a nutritionist that people are having more problems with wheat and corn now because they are GMO. Some people have a bad reaction to it. My girlfriend really had a horrible reaction and becomes very ill when she eats those foods.

In the end, the best things in life came from our own inner growth and that came from dealing with things that we wish didn't exist and making them better. So in that way, bad things are a huge blessing.

Hello fellow SP! Has anyone heard of Maria Emmerich? Alternative to popular diets, but if you are interested in research she has a ton of data on diabetes. She is a nutritionist and has facts and testimonials to back her up.

My uncle who lives with me is Diabetic, so I'm trying to learn more about so I can ... subtly influence his diet to better choices. He's very set in his ways, his meat and potatoes and white bread ways. But I've been able to get him to try some of the stuff I make and he usually likes it so that's a positive sign. I want my uncle to be around for a long time to come! This link had some good ideas for things I can have him try, and hopefully he'll like them!

that's why i joined SP & this team. I think it helps to talk about it with people who get it!

about those foods we used to overeat. I don't think of them as foods I'm giving up. I will still have them on special occasions... I just am looking for a whole bunch of (healthier) new favorites to crave!!!

;)

Thanks INUNISON but I don't take anything but a baby aspirin. Would that do it?

I was on Byetta and he thinks that might have something to do with how many times I have had it since then.

Quest4Change it is post like yours that sure inspire me to do much better.

I can tell just by cutting out red meat last week that I feel better. I love beans so can eat them in anything and I am sure that will help as well.

Oh like Bilbo Baggins says, "there's no knowing where your going to be swept off your feet to once you step out the door"................that is how I feel about all of this.

"So I want to know how you just "cut" all that stuff out and do you feel deprived? I am not a great lover of veggies but I am sitting here eating a wonderful nectarine and just the smell of it reminds me of summer and I feel better. So there is something to be said about the smells of food."

Yes.

I loved foods I always ate. I am looking for new foods that ring my bell but are better for me, like the nectarine!

I also have found it tremendously helpful to eat in ways that keep me satisfied, including physical feelings of fullness, like a nice salad with meals, broth soups in the winter, cut up veggies dipped in salsa, even popcorn!

I think it helps to look forward to how we can make eating as pleasurable as before but much healthier!

Check out things like anchoring meals and snacks with with complex carbs with fiber plus lean protein and possibly healthier bit of fat from things like olives, avocado, nuts.

The potential health benefits of eating real foods in delicious ways fascinates me!

for example, a new idea for me was eating resistant starch like cold sweet potatos or any of the many starchy beans (legumes) to help stabilize blood sugar, etc. I first read about it in ChefMd's Big Book of Culinary Medicine by John Puma & then googled the topic too.

I think I have replaced most meat at lunch with "legumes" which provide protein and resistant starch. I do a variety of stews, and soups and hot dishes in the winter. Right now I have been enjoying them cold in salads and wraps.

Good Luck! You are just starting a great adventure :)

Just a quick note... I had pancreatitis so many times I lost count... my Dr said don't take tylenol, and they stopped.

It took me over 2 years before I even owned up to having Diabetes. Yes I did feel deprived at first and it was very hard to give up all those sweets and bad carbs. But the light bulb finally went on and I got with the program. I was tired of always being rundown, feeling sick, knees hurting, etc.

If you have time go into my Spark Page and read some of my Blogs and it explains a lot. I did one on my sugar count reducing and I did one on my Raw Food transition.

emoticon so much. It is always nice to feel welcome on a new team where you might not know anyone.

I am usually on SP at work so I have to fit it in and today has been a busy day. So just got to hop on. This team seems to have all that I need to get myself in better shape and take control of my diabetes instead of letting it keep me under control.

You are doing wonderful. emoticon

I am going to give it my best to do what is right for my health and I just wanted to say thank you so much for giving me a leg up.

I will check out the Raw Food Diet and Diabetes for sure.

emoticon NIMAWEYGH Just take a look around on this site when you have the time to read all of the threads. Everyone is pretty helpful.

I have reduced my sugar from 307 when I started Spark on May 24, 2009 to 85 this morning. Happy is not the word! I am trying to get back to a 100% Raw Diet but currently I have one meal a day that is cooked but the rest of my meals and snack are Raw. I eat fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes and I cut out all of the crap including processed foods and/or preservatives. You may also want to do a little research on the raw Food Diet and Diabetes. Even if you eat a meal or two a day that is Raw it will help your sugar tremendously.

Good luck.

I am brand new to this team and just joined today due to my DR's demands.

I have suffered from pancreatitis 3 times this year due to my high triglycerides and cholesterol. I drink no alcohol.

I am a type 2 diabetic insulin dependant.

So my DR has said TOTAL diabetic diet with WHOLE FOODS as the focus.

I have no idea where to start or what to do but I saw this topic and thought.............that is for me.

I look forward to making myself familiar with this team and what it is all about.

Nimma

I am a type 2 diabetic and I eat a lot of whole grains such as quinoa, bulgar, and barley. My sugar levels are down around 100 or less. I do eat a lot of vegetables with them.

I guess everybody' s system is different.

Interesting, thanks!

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.

I saw this great article on NYT.com about the best diet for diabetics. Here is the link...

www.nytimes.com/2008/12/19/health/19
di
et.html?partner=permalink&exprod=perR>malink

And a few key points I picked up:

1) People with Type 2 diabetes on a high-fiber diet kept their blood sugar under better control when they ate foods like beans and nuts instead of the recommended whole-grain diet, researchers have found.

2) Pharmaceuticals used to control Type 2 diabetes have not shown the expected benefits in terms of reducing cardiovascular disease.
