When someone in my family is suffering from a cold and chest congestion, I whip up a tea made from Elder Flower, Marshmallow Root and Eucalyptus. I add honey for sweetness and they are on their way to feeling better. Elder flowers can help to thin the mucus in the respiratory system and relieve congestion and allergies. Marshmallow root has a long history dating back thousands of years as an herbal remedy for cough, sore throat and other respiratory problems such as bronchitis and whooping cough (pertussis). This is due to the large amounts of mucilage found in the flower as well as the root. Eucalyptus helps to relieve symptoms of colds, flu, chest congestion, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, and respiratory infections. REMEMBER: If you are pregnant or nursing consult a doctor before consuming herbs. It is also important to do a little research on side effects and allergic reactions to make sure the particular herbs are right for you!
