I drank chocolate milk after my boot camp workout on Monday night, and I noticed a huge difference in how I felt on Tuesday morning. I was not as fatigued and my muscles were not as sore as usual, even though I went heavier on the weights.

According to research, chocolate milk may just be the best post-workout recovery drink around. According to an article in Fitness Magazine (http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/he
althy-eating/superfoods/chocolate-milk
-after-workout/), chocolate milk has double the carbohydrate and protein content, which is perfect for replenishing tired muscles. “Its high water content replaces fluids lost as sweat, preventing dehydration. Plus it packs a nutritional bonus of calcium, and includes just a little sodium and sugar -- additives that help recovering athletes retain water and regain energy.”

According to the article, chocolate milk works just as well as other types of recovery drinks (like Gatorade), and the extra nutrients chocolate milk provides may make it a better recovery drink overall.

Our challenge to you this week is to try drinking chocolate milk after your workouts, especially after tough workouts. For those of you used to drinking just plain water after working out, let us know if drinking chocolate milk makes a difference in how you feel. Drinking water is great, but the article states that it only replaces sweat loss and doesn’t give your muscles anything to metabolize. When your muscles have something to metabolize after a hard workout, they recover better, so let us know how you fare.
