Doyle, I am so glad you are back. Your input is valuable. I was afraid your health may have taken a turn again. My absentee issue has been the opposite. I feel well enough to go out and do all kinds of things like gardening again. I hope that is true for you too.

Great advice Jimmy.

Bob, I hope that you will not give up. Perhaps a another visit to a sleep doctor for a better fitting or adjustment to your machine would help. Jimmy is right, this isn't easy. There are times/nights when it's okay and there are some where you could just throw the machine out the window. It's so important though. Please don't give up on it!

Getting use to the machine can be difficult. I know that others suggest wearing the mask & using the machine while watching t.v. I never did that. When I did my first sleep study my only goal was to go to sleep. The pressure, even though low, gave me problems. I concentrated on going to sleep. Now it doesn't bother me as much, but I do prefer to have my machine ramp up slowly. That way I don't notice the pressure.

Bob - I would be the last one to tell you that this therapy is easy. I have been a light sleeper for years and years and I would only get a few hours of sleep a night. This trend is improving with CPAP but I still have a long way to go. I will usually wake up with just a minor leak or a small tickle on the nose. Granted I have only tried two masks but I was only able to tame down the leaks by tightening down the mask more than I thought it should be. I do have a few "win" nights where everything clicks in to place and I have a great night's sleep. One thing that I have noticed is how long it takes me to get to sleep. I used to toss and turn for 1 to 2 hours before falling asleep, now I am out in about 10 minutes. Last night was another trial for me, I only used the machine for four hours before taking the mask off. But I do think of it this way,' I reduced my risks for four hours!' Again this may not be the perfect solution but it is the best solution that I have and I want to live!

Before you give it up completely, I want to ask you to do two things. One is to do a search on Reggie White of football fame. And two, try out your machine and mask while watching TV. Try it for 30 minutes and work up to a full movie.

Bob it really is a lot of work to adapt to the mask. Looking at a guys standpoint, it might be like going from Chevy pickup to an 18 wheeler. Big, noisy, expensive, but it serves a different purpose. Apnea kills. I have known two people that probably died from apnea related complications and I spent four days in the hospital and about three months recouperating after a major apnea event lowered my oxygen so long it did some damage.

Determined not to return to the hospital and be miserable for months on end, I stayed compliant to the point of creating a divot in my forehead. Luckily, the masks are a huge improvement now. Talk to your tech or doctor or both about the problems surrounding the mask and air pressure lower pressure is better than no pressure. They might be willing to let you adjust your own pressure to suit you. You may also need a bi-level Like an 18 wheeler, once you learn to drive it you will love the power.

I have gotten to the point where I just stopped. No confidence in the doctor. Could never find a comfortable mask, had to switch to a more advanced machine. Numerous settings, just can't take the air pressure. Terrible dry mouth and eyes even with the humid on max. I've come to the conclusion the therapy is worse than the ailment. Frustrated, decided to just focus on loosing weight.

yes, I love you tube because of the visuals and some very helpful hints.

I go by feel. If I am getting rainout, I lower the setting, if the sinuses are dried out, I raise it.

I watched a video on YouTube that said you should adjust he moisture levels as the seasons change or if you have a cold. I am not 100% sure but I think changes in moisture levels could affect the fit of your mask.

Is your machine higher than your head? that would mean water is flowing in the tubing. Also if air is leaking it could be that the hose is not on good enough or is split somewhere. We were told to change our tubing every three months. Hope this helps.

I checked WebMD and they suggest cleansers and toners in one breath and the next they say less is more. Soaps and scouring can increase oil production. They recommend washing your face by splashing on the water with bare hands or by patting, but not rubbing to decrease oil production.

Changing your diet to a low fat all natural foods diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables can help even out skin tone too. I can't believe how nice my skin is since I have started going sugar/gluten and processed food free. I always had a good to decent complexion, but for my age, I am totally shocked. It is one of the perks of clean eating. Also drink 8-10 cups water a day.

Here is something I want to try.
simplemom.net/oil-cleansing-method/ It makes good sense. Best of luck. Tell us which strategies you try and what works for you.

Yes Cathy, I am the King of typos as I have Irlens Syndrome and when I see print (black on white particularly) it moves on the page and I can read a passage I have written several times over and still not see the typos I have made.

I am trying to improve by using the spell checker on SP but I also prefer to write in Australian English rather than Amercian ( words like colour instead of color and savour instead of savor).

I have software called Dragon DIctate which I need to make more use of because I will be using it for university this year. But when it comes to writing in things like SP and facebook I find it slow and usually end up typing the words in instead.

Dragon Dictate works well for me in word documents so I suppose I could get myself organised enough to open and write my text in a word document and then copy and paste it into the SP team boards.

Everybody has typos. I rarely read back what I typed until later and see that I slipped up but as long as we get the general idea, who cares? The bottom line is that you are always quick to respond to our problems and, look, you helped someone out!

You are welcome. Geez, my my typos are all over that post. Hope you were able to figure out what I meant. I love doing research. None of these are original ideas. I either look them up or have borrowed them from other members.

Thanks Cathy. It worked better last night, there is still the sound of air louder than it used to be in winter but I don't think it is actually leaking around the silicone seals. I losened the strap which i had tightened and it didnt cut into the bridge of my nose as much.

The heat may be causing you to sweat which would make the seal slide and leak. Also the sliding would cause more skin irritation on the nose.

1) Try loosening the straps a little. People tend to cranks the straps tighter and tighter trying to get a seal, when looser allows that outside silicone cover to inflate like a balloon and work properly. If you toll and turn some leakage is normal.

2) Try soaking the gel cushion in hot water for ten minutes before bed. Dry and put it on warm. It helps to mold the gel into your face shape.

3) You may be due for a new mask. Most insurances will change them out after 6 months to a year.

4) check out cloth liners or moleskins to protect your skin in the hot weather. www.cpap.com/productpage/remzzzs-ful
l-
face-cpap-mask-liners.html
I always thought these look a bit like coffee filters. I was always going to experiment with natural coffee filters or even just a scrap of any fabric material, but I haven't used my full face mask in a couple of years. Frankly the nasal masks are more comfortable.

5) try adjusting the angle of the forehead piece. I am assuming it is the bridge of your nose that is being irritated.

6) here is mole skin. www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=e

The sticky side goes on the mask. The soft on your face. Don't laugh, we had a little controversy about this a while back.

Oh and to help with the hot weather since we only had air conditioning downstairs, I would put a bag of ice in a pan in front of a fan and turn it directly on me. I also took the iced gel packs to bed with me.

Hope some of this helps.

I am frustrated, the my mask is not working for me, I don't know why, It has got to the point where i have even slept without it on for a few nights because it is getting worse.

It seems to be cutting into my nose and there is the sound of leaking air, Could it be related to the really hot weather in South Australia.... I suspect that the mask is too small for me, The DME provided me with a small mask, it worked ok in winter but now we are in summer it is not working.
