"FREEDOM FROM FAT" PARTICIPANTS
FINAL WRAP-UP REPORT, July 4th, 2011

HOW DID IT GO FOR YOU? Did you find it helpful to focus on specific behavior changes to achieve a short-term success? Or did the goals you set for this special project fail to hold your interest? Just fishing for ideas on what works and what doesn't. No biggie.
emoticon
The list below is incomplete, since many are still out celebrating the 4th and haven't posted a final result.

I will make changes to this list of our original goals and our progress, as needed, to give us a more up-to-date picture of what we accomplished in a short period of time by focusing on some targets for improvement. Every improvement we can make is another step toward our FREEDOM From FAT. Even if the only thing we have to show for this specific project is the knowledge that we set the wrong goals, it is still a step in the right direction. Results that didn't please us could lead to a new beginning.

Update:
Some cookies, and pita chips.

weight is yoyoing.

I actually logged food today. And realize it is essential to weight loss. To loose I got to work the numbers.

If I am not completely mindful and accountable I act out with food. The worst part is I get all victimy about not loosing weight.

I am loosening some of my attachment to food. And eating what I want when I am truly hungry while thinking about the implication of my choices.

And I just need to sit with why its so hard at night. Why is not giving into eating at night such a challenge?

I got a little beer buzz on right now so hope this makes enough sense.

Cool! You're on a roll. I'm doing great this week, just behind in my paperwork. I finally got my fitness logging up-to-date this weekend.

Cleaning out our basement may take the rest of my life, but it's burning up the calories.

Here's my check-in for the past week:

BTVMads

SW: 160.6
CW: 158.2
GW: 157

My behavior change is to eat far more protein and far fewer carbs and almost no grains in a manner similar to Protein Power or Paleo diets. It's sometimes hard to avoid grains when I'm tired and munchy, but overall this shift has been surprisingly easy to make! I lost 2 pounds almost effortlessly, have more energy throughout the day, and eat really delicious meals. It's great!

Whoopsies! I still need to update our progress report for last week.
Been eating too much. Today is going well.

Re the scale, there are several good brands of digital scales, that keep track of your weight and estimate your body fat percentage. The only thing I pay attention to these days is the weight. I've had too many numbers swimming around in my head. Need to mentally relax.

Tatiana scale is supposed to be a very good make. I think Boo has one. it keeps data, etc.

I have not been eating crackers, but did have one "episode" with a single serving bag of chips.

I have been very munchy and downright binging yesterday. June can do that to me. The end of the school year does a number on me. its a culmination of all the insecure feelings I have towards myself as a teacher.

Anyhoo. I should add "no cookies" to the list of what not to eat till the 4th.

O.k., bring it on.

No crackers, chips or cookies.
Meet fitness minutes goal of 1000 per month/270 per week.
And see the home scale go at least 3 pounds under 200....and that can be a light touch.

Cassie..who is now officially off of cookies.

I probably shouldn't take credit for it. I have to admit though that this is a challenge for me. In order for me to get this much fluid in, I have to drink 2 cups of water before noon. I think this is a good exercise for me... Maybe after 1 month, this will be easier? I know it looks like I gained weight but my weight has been fluctuating up and down so much that I wouldn't really call it a gain at this point...

Okay, so my first response to setting the goal to not eat out until July was to rush out and eat out as much as I could, to get my eating outs under the belt! Ahhhh well. So, the first week was a nice little fail! But I've laid in some really nice foods, and rebellion out of the way, I'm set to begin:

WEIGHT CHANGE GOALS
SW=120.6
CW=120.6
GW=113 (not by July, though! Goodness, no! 117lbs would be awesome)

I observed that I did not plan out a weekly menu, and I did not cook ahead the things that are useful to have prepared:

- veggies already chopped up
- brown rice all cooked and ready to go with lunches
- family room and kitchen tidy enough to make we want to sit down and eat there

SO, I'll precook/cut things today. I'll try to maintain the kitchen this week, put some flowers from my garden on the table, and try to establish that this is the very nicest place in the world...

Joy

Races Goal:
Sub 8:30/mile for a Springtime Race!
Volunteer at a race before June 2012!

Goal Winter & Spring 2012:
Develop an interesting cross-training routine that will be fun for my daughter to join in on.
10,000 steps/day whether running or walking.

Nice work on avoiding the "worthless" snacks.

What's the Tatiana Scale? Is it just a really fancy electric scale? I'm thinking I might need a new scale too, because mine weighs me in at about 7lbs less than my doctor's scale does.

As for my goals... so far, so good!

SW: 160.6
CW: 160.2
GW: 157

I've been doing lots of research on meal plans and busting my butt to avoid carbohydrates from grains, juices, and potatoes. In fact, I've only eaten three servings of grain ALL WEEK -- 3 pieces of sushi on Wednesday, 1/3 of a slice of pizza yesterday, and 1/2 cup of Kashi Go Lean this AM because we literally have no other food in the house until I go grocery shopping. The tough part has been not having much to snack on in the house, and my after-dinner cravings for something sweet. But I haven't felt hungry yet and I'm not feeling the slightest bit deprived!

Now that I've done more research and planning, I know this week will be a lot easier -- I've got a much better grocery list, haha.

So far so good with no crackers or chips.

And the home is on 205. Balance scale and Wii are 213. I should really buy a new bathroom scale and stop playing these mind games. I do the same thing with the clock in my car, I set it 7 minutes fast and then always feel I have more time than i do. I've looked into the tatiana scale before and should really just get one.

Overdid the snacking during the NBA playoff game last night. Did the same thing during the Super Bowl game. I lose my mind when I'm having too much fun, a habit of mine that needs work.

Losing one's mind is almost as bad as losing one's tape measure, speaking of signs.

Off to a good start today. We're going out tonight. I've made plans to behave. I feel fat today, which usually frightens me and triggers desires to overeat. It will be a challenging day.

The "list" gets updated on Sunday night. So, I had best look around and find my mind. It's here somewhere.

Hi, checking in!
Barbara, the list is amazing:-)
I misplaced my measuring tape, is that a sign?
I ate pretty well this week, getting slowly back towards 180 (the previous couple of weeks were NOT GOOD).
I re-discovered callanetics that I used to do much more when I was younger. I even got the DVD from Amazon (I used to use the book). Since it's pretty effective stomach exercise, among other things, I think it might help me with my goal.
Best wishes
Zuzana

Hi Friends,

I'll set my sights for this unchallenge.

I am going to not eat crackers leading up to firecracker day! I find I cannot eat them without getting bingey.....crackers will do that do ya! And actually add chips to this unchallenge for me. I don't eat them as often, but they are another food that I get a charge out of as I eat them.

I would also like to see my home scale dip under 200. I am closing in on 200 again after being as high as 210.

Here's the formatted version for you to cut and paste my Boobala;)

Cassie
No crackers or chips.
See home scale go below 200.

I had to think long and hard before joining this one because I feel like I need a break, but I do think it would do me so much good to focus on getting at least 7 cups of water/ tea/ or other fluid in me daily. Only 1 can of soda may count towards the total. I have been ending my days feeling dehydrated and I know a body can't lose weight without water, no matter how much of a calorie deficit I have.

I'm in!

The upcoming month is pretty crazy for me. I'm finishing up my last weeks of working at my current job, so saying goodbye to my graduating 8th graders and all of my amazing coworkers is going to be bittersweet. I'll be starting my summer job right away. At the end of this challenge, one of my oldest friends is getting married! And to top it off, I've been hunting for a teaching job for 3 months. If nothing comes through, then on June 17th my hubby and I start marking plans to move to Chattanooga, TN! WHEW!!!

So, my goal isn't really about weight loss. It's about changing my diet to encourage fat burning. I'm basically at my old goal weight, but my fat % never changed after losing 27lbs! So for the next month, I want to focus on reducing the amount of carbs I eat by eating less starchy, sugary food and more protein, nuts, and veggies. Fruit is still a-okay, as is dairy, but I think that when I'm stressed, eating bread and cereal and all that just isn't doing my body any favors. It's a long story, but that's the goal!

So, my starting stats are:

BTVMADS
SW: 160.6
CW: 160.6
GW: 157.0

BEHAVIOR CHANGE: Eat only 1-2 small servings of grains per day and avoid added sugar. Keep my energy going with lots of veggies, healthy fats, lean proteins, nuts, and fruit.

Hi MADERINERUE,
I just wanted to say that I can completely relate to the job-related stress. Sometimes I feel like my relatively new job sucks all the enrgy out of me and I have hardest time to get some exercise in as well.
I got into my calorie range yesterday! It's been a while, sadly, these past two weeks were not a good example of anything.

I exercised 2-4 times a week for almost a year in 2009-2010. I felt strong and my stress level was so much lower. Starting a new job in September really interfered with ALL aspects of self-care, and the one I miss the most is exercise. For the next month, I am going to run and/or walk at least once per week. I don't care about inches or pounds right now...all I care about is moving. Thanks, BooBoo, for thinking of this. I need some collegial support.

Hi Babara, thank you very much for the warm welcome. I like very much this team's environment and I love this challenge idea.
My goal is a bit strange, because I never though of my goals in inches, but I would like to lose 2 inches from my waist. I am not sure how to go around that, but I am thinking to continue tracking my calories (losing pounds cannot hurt) and following more "religiously" my Workout with Jackie emoticon DVD the abs section.
I would really really like to fit to some of my jeans I used to wear year ago emoticon .
Best wishes to everybody!

I am in. Basically, I need a lovetap on the butt to get back into my old rhythm of working out regularly and eating within range. I just bought some awesome running kicks, and I am back in the habit of going to the gym 2X per week before work. Right after July 4th is my family vacation at the beach. I haven't seen my family in seven months, so it would be nice to get back to where I was a few weeks ago regarding my exercise habits (runs on the beach!) and eating habits (enjoying but not mindlessly eating food).

I'm in! Here's how:

My downfall is eating out. Budget and weight affected. I love good food, and am challenged to produce a meal at home that I can enjoy. I like not having to clean up, and having the food brought to me while I read. Between now and July 4th, try to find a way to enjoy eating at HOME. Find a way to manage my time better so I actually plan appetizing meals. Find a way to view home as a retreat, and not to depend on hiding in a restaurant booth to have a sense of peace.

Also, track from my budgeting software how much meals out really always cost... and start PLANNING the meals out as something to be anticipated.

Basically, mindfulness about this habit between now and July. Blog entries. No action steps beyond this, yet.

If I lick this one, it'd be an accomplishment!

There is never ONE answer to how we lose weight and maintain the losses. Some of us like structure and some of us don't.

Still, July 4th is LOOMING, and I think many of us would like to be FREE of some excess pounds by then. So, whether you like structured challenges or not (I"m in the "not" column), but would like some company as you work to lose weight this month, why not join us in FIGHTING TO BE FREE from FAT. If you feel stuck right now, this may be a useful nudge to get yourself going.

If you want to join a QUICKIE, ONE-MONTH project to see what you can accomplish by the 4th, post your goals and reasons here. Choose a BEHAVIOR CHANGE goal AND/OR a WEIGHT CHANGE goal. One or both. Whatever works for you! Make your goals personal and reasonable. If you want to just say, "I'm in!" and spend some time thinking about your goals, that will be great.

Let us know once a week or more often, if you like, how it's going. All up to you! Brags and/or whines are welcome. We are in this mess together, and we will help one another claw our way out of it, an inch or an ounce or a step or a day or a week at a time.

Once a week, late Sunday, I will post a summary of weekly results.

If you prefer a long-term ONGOING "not-a-challenge", join the 2011's RIGHT NOW To Goal Weight and BEYOND Squad. They will welcome you into the fold, with open arms. I'm a member of that elite group, too. And I can always count on them for support. You can, too.

Somewhere along the way, beavers and smooches became their logo, and their motto is "Onward, HO!"

Members of that RIGHT NOW Squad can participate in this quickie project, only if they feel the need of a shot in the arm (or a rush of adrenaline) to boost their current routines.
