I've been following your posts on Facebook Jazzie, sorry about your dad. Thinking of you as you heal and regroup.

I have to firm up my New Year's Motto....I am still chuckling from the video I posted on the 2011 thread. The one that is working its way into my life most this morning is: "This year its gonna be different!" Completely tongue in cheek. Aren't those the famous last words of so many New Year's Eve resolvers?????????

I want to thank you all for all the support and encouragement you gave me on this thread. I do feel sad to leave it behind....but I have my sails set for my continued growth in our new forum. Can't wait to see what were all going to achieve this time around!

Happy New Year, YINZ!

Sorry about those 2 years of not so good for your dad, JAZZ. I'm glad you were able to be with family to celebrate his life, despite your kidney procedures.

2011 will likely be a very good "health" year for you.

emoticon a toast to the New Year and to get an update. I'm sure I'm missing a week or so on this thread.

Much has happened in my world. Biggest of which is my dad is finally not suffering any more. He had a good 90 years, and then 2 years of not so good. I just returned from his funeral and it was very much a celebration of a long, happy life. I am exhausted, but peaceful. Tired, but excited to make new goals. Still recovering from procedure on 2nd kidney, but SURE that I can drink enough to never go through this again.

Hope all is well here. Happy New Year.

Working on sane eating day #9! It's still 2010, but one of my goals will be to cycle through with 4 day wins the habits I know are good for me. I'll list them as part of my goals on the new loop tomorrow.
Just want to start something today!
-----------
Starting two 4 day wins today:
#1) "Not eating all day" 4 day win:
For 4 days I will eat no more than 3 meals and 1 snack. Daily reward will be time to burn a candle and 4 day reward will be to buy 5 lotto tickets.

#2) "Get back to exercise habits" 4 day win: For 4 days I will do at least 10 minutes running before breakfast, 5 Quickfire exercises, back exercise on stability ball and some pushups and situps. Daily reward will be time to do a kirigami and 4 day reward will be to pop the big bubblewrap and to put a flower on my profile picture and computer desktop.

Welcome home!

As soon as 2010 ends at midnight tomorrow (Friday), we will move to the 2011 challenge, where participants can commit one month at a time, since we'll be doing 12 back-to-back monthly segments. Otherwise, it's the same as 2010 WIN.

I've gotten in two days of weighing daily and tracking my food, after the week of telling myself I could take it easy and not do those things. The weight's coming back down and I'm not wussing around any longer.

I think my head's unraveled and functioning now.

Learning to tolerate hunger is one of those skills Judith beck talked about in her Beck Diet Solution book, SUSAN. (Chapter 6, Day 12). See if you agree with her.

Glory would not exactly describe my recent days, either. I wasn't getting on the scale or writing down what I ate, thinking I was probably doing almost OK. I finally got on the scale yeaterday and it was nasty. I started tracking the food immediately and spent the afternoon writing my "Post-Mortems, Skinny B*tches & Lies!! Why?!!!" blog, to clear my head and find my sense of direction. I weighed again this morning. The weight was better, but mainly I'm back into my routine.

I love what you said about our 2010 WIN crew, LALA. I feel the same way that you do. Smooches all around.

Inglorious... that word describes my 12/24, 12/25, and 12/26. Made a recovery on 12/27, and I'm working on 12/28! I read an e-mail from web md about calorie requirements and was reminded that a person can safely go much lower than I ever go... I don't know why, but I've been afraid of hunger. Hunger is a normal experience. We are supposed to let ourselves get hungry. I'm just talking to myself... Anyhoo... I'm glad you're hanging in there Lala, I'm here with you.

Cassie, thank you for the spark gift and your message. It's nice to know I'm being thought of!

Greetings to everyone!

It will be a sad farewell to the 2010 WIN thread...

I have ended the year pretty ungloriously, but being here with you peeps has been an absolute life saver for me. I'm having a rough patch, but it doesn't matter because I know - thanks to YINZ - that there is another side to the patch and that I can get through it, then past it, and keep doing what I do best: eat, sleep, move, live, love and LAUGH!

I love you all, ya know. See ya in the here and RIGHT NOW!

Hi my lovees,

Well, Christmas Eve and Day have come and gone. I am now braving the NYC blizzard. I just saw that on Saturday it is going to be 50 degrees here. A weather nut at my job said that it was going to be "a december to remember" and then unseasonably warm for jan and feb. I'll take it.

The holidays went well. I don't feel like doing the details, but I think emotionally better.

And One day as I was thinking I have been putting one step in front of the other and it DOES feel like me! So, one year later I feel much more secure in my health supportive lifestyle. I got in in a great run on Wednesday in the mist of cleaning up and doing the final decorating in my house. That would have never been a priority.

I also had a wild goose chase in Manhattan trying to deliver toys for tots to the marines in Times Square. It involved a lot of walking and carrying two big bags of toys and having my daughter in tow. I had the energy and stamina and the wherewithal to take a coffee break to regroup. The toys had to come back home on the subway with us.....and I definitely did not get as angry or self deprecating as I would have in the past.

I did come down with a flu like cold. But, I refilled an antibiotic I had and still did some errands.

O.K., not sure how rambling this is....but had to catch up. I really want to sit down and take time for thoughtful writing. Maybe some morning if I am up early I will have some quality writing time.

I am going to be going to a week long retreat with Geneen Roth October 2011. I am really looking forward to that. I want to try to break free (to borrow her term) of the emotional eating. I am definitely getting there. Food has played a lot less of a role than it has in the past. I have been indulging, but it has been joyful and not resulting in guilt.

I love the ideas for 2011.
I also am thinking about this thing Geneen Roth says. To paraphrase;
We really don't want to eat hot fudge sundays, we want our lives TO BE hot fudge sundays. I am going to post a link to this.

emoticon

But, I do like the idea of making our lives spectacular....and not using food to make it that way. WE have all come far in that respect. But, I still dream of a day when "food is just food."

Hi all! I'm still around, just in "lurker" mode for a while. I don't like to come to SP and whine a bunch (though I still do, sometimes) so I'm keeping it to myself!

On the good news front, hubby and I have cleaned out the "server room" and cleared some space in the garage. Our home office is now all clean, painted, and set up. Next week we are ready to rip up the living room carpet and put down our laminate wood flooring and a small area of very plush, sexy carpet....

Hey... just stepped away for a sec. The Witnesses just came a knockin'! I wished them a Merry Christmas as they left...doh!

Anyway, I hope ya'll enjoy the end of the year festivities and the time spent with loved ones. We are back to the old hometown tonight ourselves.

Love yinz!

I think it would be fun if others of us did post-mortems of how we did in 2010, like MAYA plans to do, acknowledging our successes and making decisions about targets for improvement.

The object is to enrich our lives so that emotional eating becomes less and less appealing to us, over time. So, it would seem logical to set goals that lead us gradually to more advanced versions of the things we already do well and like. By doing so, we would be strengthening new more healthy habits.

We might even find clues to some long-term far away goals that we don't even know we want yet.

The targets for improvement could also be broken down into action steps and worked on a little at a time, so that they don't overwhelm us. Mainly, we would want to minimize the repetition of our old bad habits, so that they will weaken and go away.

Thoughts?

Bon Voyage, Jol! emoticon

Boo, that sounds like a good name to me, especially after reading Maya's post.... and beyond!

I did finish my last 4DW but have not had time to post. Yesterday, very little time at work (other than the dreaded working thing). emoticon

So, here's my report...

I will stretch, at least a little. Daily rewards will be to read 30 minutes of my book (American Gods)! My 4 day reward is tbd. I'm hoping this will turn into a habit like my new "no night-eating" habit.

Sunday: emoticon
Monday: emoticon
Tuesday: emoticon
Wednesday: emoticon

I would also like to start another 4dw for stretching. My daily reward will be 30 minutes of reading and my 4 day reward is tbd (again). I haven't stretched yet today but I'm hoping this lights a fire under me... I've already noticed less stiffness. I also suspect that my injuries will occur less frequently if I'm more flexible.

Nice vid, Boo! Hey, love that those small pants DO look BIG! Whee! :) You guys always have such a blast on the floor - makes me wanna go out and dance!

Glad to see a few of us on here still. It's usually quieter around the holidays, if I remember right.

I am luxuriating in my first day off in a couple of weeks, and in having finally got a full night of sleep after a week of almost-all-nighters-plus-all-day-at-work. Not complaining, because the software forensics were kinda fun, but very relieved to be getting back to some kind of normal.

Got a few days of downtime coming up, but I know January is going to be really busy again. Whew.

This week I'm going to take stock and see why exactly I fell off every wagon so badly this year. I already know why, to be honest, but I seem to like doing post-mortems, so I will.

Well, here's to infinity and beyooooooooond! (I love Buzz LightYear!)

Happy holidays, everyone!

I like the idea of ignoring bad meals and bad days, JOL. Just keep the momentum and continue to do the good stuff. The bad stuff will die the death of "attrition".

An SP friend, who has lost over 100 lbs and is still maintaining, told me a couple of years ago that she ignores "pounds that she gains" and they go away. She says they just want attention, and she's not about to give it to them.

She only gives attention to the new habits that she enjoys and just keeps going.

It's all part of our "reward the right things" approach.

4DW report: I will stretch, at least a little. Daily rewards will be to read 30 minutes of my book (American Gods)! My 4 day reward is tbd. I'm hoping this will turn into a habit like my new "no night-eating" habit.

Hi, YINZ ALL!

You'd think a person would STAY stretched, right, SUSAN? But "No". We have to do it over and over again, to keep from getting sore. Oh, well...that's show biz!

Speaking of show biz, our Bucks performance last night was really fun. I'm hoping to find it on youtube, to share. I was proud of how the poster looked, after this year's weight loss, JAZZ. (Shake and bake and YINZ helped!)

Thanks, CASSIE, for the quotation. It reinforces the importance of our efforts to increase our awareness, an areaa where we have made great strides this year.

I'm with you and SUSAN on the "not counting streak days". When it motivates, count them. When it becomes "pressure", stop counting and focus on today. Again, we have to be aware of where that line is for us, as indiviuals, at any given time.

emoticon
Festive foods are everywhere for a few more days. Oddly enough, "cookies" don't tempt me at all. I could eat tons of them and never get the sought after "buzz". So, I don't bother with them.

Other things are a different matter. So I'm being careful and eating what I love in some kind of reasonable portion. Writing the treats down and planning for them really helps.

Speaking of the "buzz" from food, my daughter just shared an interesting comment with me. A friend of hers at work, who recently acquired the lap band, is having a hard time right now because she physically can't eat enough to "medicate" herself. She doesn't drink, and food was always her easy fix for "work" stress. I feel for her. It takes time to find less destructive ways to get that comfort we seek.

Hi Everyone! Hugs all around! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Jol, sorry I missed out on supporting you a couple days ago. Not counting sounds like a good idea to me right now, because it seems like as the number gets bigger there is more pressure. Pressure adds up to a binge, for me anyway.

I've been thinking about what I'm not doing that I'd really like to start, and I want to make it my next 4DW. Stretching. I just can't seem to get myself to do it lately, and I know it's essential for the body, especially when we're getting older.

So, starting today and for the next 3 days I will stretch, at least a little. Daily rewards will be to read 30 minutes of my book (American Gods)! My 4 day reward is tbd. I'm hoping this will turn into a habit like my new "no night-eating" habit.

I thought of you last night Jolkey as I was strolling around target. I saw a big, festive roll of bubble wrap and I thought of it as a reward. Then I realized, "Oh, that's actually intended for gift wrapping and mailing!"

Working on a sane eating day! Not counting days for awhile. I don't even know if I should consider that I broke my streak. My binges now are minuscule in quantity, calories, and duration compared to even just a year ago.

But I want to concentrate on just today for food. I do like the reward system, so here are some just for today:

Reward for each sane meal where I do not eat too much sugar will be to pop bubble wrap.
Eating three meals and one snack today will garner me the reward of burning a candle tomorrow morning.

Oh I miss so much when I skip a day or 2. Hugs to all. JOL especially. I say you had a great recovery and should be proud of yourself. Our annual tradition is a drink called "Wicked Eggnog" and that's exactly what it is. Both in calories AND emoticon . We'll be making it on Christmas Eve and hopefully no one will get hurt.

Boo, your latest poster is fabulous! Way to be emoticon !

Someone just gave us their 5th Avenue tickets to see "A Christmas Story"...which means off I go to get ready for a night in the theatre. So sorry they got sick, but we'll try to enjoy it twice as much for them! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
I LOVED the movie. Is there any way this can be as good???

Speaking of egg nog I have miracuously been able to resist it over the past two holiday seasons (call it the Christmas Miracle!), but I do love it.

I saw an add for Silk Nog and have been searching it out and finally found it. It tastes good and has half the calories and a fraction of the fat of the usual stuff. Still not cheap at 90 calories and half cup, but it is so festive sprinkled with nutmeg.

So, tonight I am going to spike it with a bit of rum and really get into the holiday spirit!

I also think a banana smoothie with it as a base will be awesome.

So, it will take me out of my range for weight loss, but I still like to have fun with food for the holidays.

emoticon

Now Christmas cookies, there is where I got to watch myself. I want to enjoy them, but have to be very mindful as I do it because as not to really enjoy and taste them and then be done.

Christmas sure as its challenges...bring'em on!

Definitely not a binge, Jolkey.

I was cleaning through papers and came across this quote from Elizabeth Lesser:

"If we can stay awake when our lives are changing, secrets will be revealed to us--secrets about ourselves, about the nature of life, and about the eternal source of happiness and peace that is always available, always renewable, already within us."

I don't know what I want to say about that. It might seem a little over the top, but there is something to it.

For me I would like to find the space between compulsive overeating and compulsive eating/exercise for weight loss.

It is so tricky when compulsive eating is our weapon of choice against ourselves.

Its hard to know what is healthy indulgence or acting out with food.

But, staying with your feelings...staying awake, even when it hurts, is the only way as far as I am concerned.

Preventive strike - don't want smoochies all over my page - WHAT WOULD PEOPLE THINK????

*giggles*

Have fun, y'all.

I am swamped at work - really not got a lot of time to surf the web (working today, can you believe it?) but I've been trying to stay on top of this thread.

Maintaining for now - happy to be not gaining with all the stress. Still trying to head for a 5-pound loss by the end of the month/year.

Hope you guys are all having a wonderful holiday season - I can't wait for next Thursday, when I have a whole 9 days off coming up!

Cheers,
Maya

I know those feelings well jol. they are ones I want to be free of. The guilt, the pain, the shame of eating is what I want to end. My current ride with maintaining has been helping. And for me dinners have been bingey. Not a great thing, but not a thing a can't live with. I will type more later. I am on the droid now which is not my fave.

I just wanted to send you love. emoticon

JOL, I don't know how long it will take for us to stop feeling so bad about eating more than we had meant to on any given day.

We know that it's not a catastrophe, and yet there it is. It never feels great. You continue to do a wonderful job of recovering quickly from disappointments. You'll be proud of yourself tomorrow.

If we had to pick between a crying binge and a food binge, I think the one you picked is the healthiest. Nothing beats a good cry.

Binge-like feelings, like those you experienced at supper, are upsetting. It feels like the old habit is coming close to overpowering us and reclaiming us as its prisoner. Always a frightening thought.

A real food binge does a lot more damage than your 2 delicious cups of egg nog could have done. Even if there's a weight gain tomorrow (which there may not be), you decided it's not a crime. You can just continue with your healthy choices.

I'm so glad it helps you to come in here and write down your intentions for continuing. Here are some smooches.

I didn't have a stellar day today and I just had a crying binge, but I'm ready to move on again. I did so many really good things today with the potluck but then I overdid it at supper, because I drank 2 cups of egg nog, which I love. I can't say I binged, but I had over 3000 calories for the day and some binge-like feelings at supper because of the egg nog. I committed to not eating anything else this evening and that did make supper end, but after the damage of all the calories of the egg nog.

I'm sitting here with a full stomach, and I'm not going to vomit, and I will go to the nutritionist tomorrow anyway and face the scale. It's okay to gain some and just start again. Tomorrow I want to eat more healthfully.

I don't want to, but I commit to finishing my Quickfire exercises tonight so I can at least keep one of my 4 day wins going.

Glad you are all here!

Hey honeys!

Love your updates and I'm thinking about 2011 too...but I am sure Boo will know how to spin it.

Missing Ray, mare and bobby....you guys are in my heart.

I'm good...living in my skin as it is....trying to actualize all I have accomplished and embracing how wonderful it is...and at the same time knowing I have more goals in terms of health, fitness and strength I would love to achieve.

Such a different place. I am feeling more secure in the fact that this is me. I don't totally trust it yet, but it does not feel like such a slippery slope.

Eyeballing some well priced snowshoes for a Vermont girls weekend in March. If I get them now I might be able to put them to use if we get some snow here in NYC.

Sorry to hear of the bad weather in the south. That's not supposed to happen.

I don't know what to call our 2011 challenge, JAZZ. As Jack Benny used to say, after a huge pause, "I'm thinking."

What rhymes with "eleven"? "Heaven" won't get it.
emoticon

Any special requests? We can do anything our little hearts desire in 2011. What are your hopes and dreams for the year?
emoticon

While we're all "thinking", an email I received from a friend today makes me laugh. So, I will share. Here's the email:

CALMNESS IN OUR LIVES

I am passing this on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following simple advice heard on the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr Phil proclaimed, "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished."

So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos, and a box of chocolates, and a half bottle of scotch.

You have no idea how freaking good I feel right now.
Pass this on to those whom you think might be in need of inner peace.

It is so, Jazzie. In my area, they've forcasted 18F for the last 2 nights and tonight it's supposed to be 25F. I've been protecting my staghorn, ponytail palm, and another useless, pretty plant (of which I don't know the name) with upside down garbage cans. We've been watering the citrus trees, and a long line of ornamental trees, in hopes that the water will protect them... I don't mind the cold but I hate worrying about the consequences to my plants and butterflies!

My 4DW's are giving me structure on my days off to help me meet my ultimate goal of maintaining...

Starting a new 4DW tomorrow to get cardio on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and to get up out of chair every 30 minutes while at work on Wednesday, and Thursday...

Daily reward: 30 minutes reading, 4 day reward: tbd.

Sunday: walked briskly 50 minutes emoticon
Monday: ran 27 minutes emoticon
Tuesday: ran 46 minutes. emoticon
Wednesday: walked 45 minutes during a long lunch break + got up every 30 minutes while sitting at desk. This was above and beyond for a work day! I will be unable to walk much tomorrow due to circumstances beyond my control. emoticon

Yeah, it's actually something like cold here. I really should have cleared off my orange tree before the freeze came down yesterday night....

I guess I should feel better 'bout my slumber habits. I know it can be a struggle, but I've been on a couple year streak of 8+ hours/nightly. It's blissful.

In my newpaper today I saw icicles hanging from grapefruit in Florida. Say it ain't so Lala & Susan!

My workouts are suffering due to too many activities/staycation/son in town. I have kidney lithotrispy side #2 scheduled for the 28th, so there's another week out. However, weight is under 150 again,so I'm pleased. I blame water intake and being ever so careful about what I can eat. emoticon emoticon . I'll bring back the workouts in 2011!

What are we calling our next year challenge???

Happy Hump Day everyone!

Good luck with your sleep goals, Boo. I know I need at least 7 hours of sleep to feel normal and motivated... 8.5 hours is my best, though.

Lots of these

are piling up on the roads here.

Driving wasn't too bad, today, though. Tomorrow I can stay in, but the rest of the week has me out there again.

As YINZ know, I have resisted improving my sleep habits. I have slept between 7 and 8 hrs a night for the last 3 nights and I'll admit that I feel better.

The following email from SparkPeople about sleep is sounding pretty convincing to me. I think I'll keep striving for 8 hrs a night. I'm officially adding sleep to my list of goals.

Here's the email:

Answers from SparkPeople's Fitness Experts

Question: I only sleep 5-6 hours each night. Is this really a big deal?

Expert Answer: Sleep is instrumental to good health and even weight loss. A disruption in your hormones and your different metabolic processes has all kinds of adverse effects. Your fat cells respond to the food you eat differently, based on your hormones. Sleep loss affects the level of certain hormones, putting your body in a position to gain weight.

Sleep loss also can cause a lack of desire to achieve goals because you feel fatigued and "run down." Sleep is also important in developing lean muscle tissue. When you work out, you are actually tearing your muscle - sleep and proper nutrients help re-build the muscle. Yes, sleep is a big deal!

Time Involved: At least 8 hours

Body Benefit: Energy, Improved weight loss, Balanced hormones, and more!

Hi all!

For all of you bubble wrap popping types, here's a funny little site I found: www.sunbelt-software.com/stu/
bubblewra
p.swf
Though it likely does not provide the tactile experience that you need/get from the real thing.

Have a fun day!
