PLEASE DO NOT POST HERE.

This challenge was phenomenal. However, it's 2010 now, so WE HAVE MOVED to the 2010 WIN thread. We're adding new features, starting with the MONTHLY MILESTONE PLAYER (MMP)AWARD. Go there, post your thoughts, participate if you wish, or lurk (in case you just like to watch).

Had to pop in before midnight....busy all day....went down in a gentle blaze of glory.

What a year.....I will share what I accomplished. I realize I have come far in these past 9 months. Absolutely gave birth to a new "me."

For now I have to thank you all for all you have given me.

Happy New Year...my heart is full.

Counting SPs and FVs on a daily basis and weekly basis helps me, but I long ago lost track of the cumulative totals. In other words, noting that I reached my FV aim 5 out of 7 days matters to me, but how that translates into a total score doesn't. Does that make any sense? I'm thinking this might indicate it's okay to remove the point assignments from my 2010 plan.

The BLAZE OF GLORY has been a stroke of genius that we ALL get credit for, since it developed and changed as we went along and various people inspired enhancements to it. I have great hopes for similar innovation and steps forward with the 2010 WIN.

You're right, JAZZIEJANA! Numbers have their place. We can definitely use them to get fired up and as a guide to changes. We're learning to use them on an as-needed basis. I think they're among those BACKFIELD skills that we have in our back pocket. Once we know their value, we can pull them out and use them whenever they improve our situation.

Thanks Maya! I first found Martha in Oprah Magazine, so there is a connection there...

My last weigh-in for 2009 is 153 which is .5 down. Yippee! On an impulse I changed my highest weight on my tracker down to what it was this last few months. So now it doesn't look like I've come as far (highest was probably 162 or so).

I too lost track of the points. But they were what got me going at first and it is the 2009 Blaze of Glory that got me fired up and excited.

Oooh!

Thanks, MAYA, for the JOY DIET link.

Numbers are starting to lose their luster for me. Other measures of progress excite me more, like I hear many of YOU saying when you lose track of point-counting and/or decide to drop some or all of it. Heavy focus on numbers sometimes adds to our anal feelings or just plain seem like make-work homework. Structure is good. Minutia can get tiresome. Thoughts?
emoticon

Is anyone using QuickTrack instead of the Full Nutrition and Fitness trackers? I'm thinking about switching to it.

QuickTrack is a tool that lets you track three things each day:
How many servings of fruits and vegetables you eat
How many cups of water you drink
How many minutes you exercise
QuickTrack is perfect for people who want to monitor these basic nutrition and fitness goals without spending a lot of time tracking details. SP recommends that we use EITHER the QuickTrack tools OR the full Nutrition and Fitness Trackers.

SPEAKING OF NUMBERS, here's my final weekly check-in for 2009. I'm still getting in over 60 SparkPoints daily, which helps me stay consistent and on the job. My December of "maintaining weight on purpose", staying within the range of 169 to 175, is still in tact. I weigh 172.2 today (up 2 lbs from last week).

Oooh!

Guess what I just came across? A mini-version, a teaser, of extracts from Martha Beck's The Joy Diet. It's 7 little extracts, covering different aspects of feasting - for ALL your senses, and, from what I remember of the book, it's actually all extracts from the book. That is, it's Martha's words there, not Oprah's. Oprah? Right - this was apparently reviewed on/by the Grande Dame of TV herself!

For those who're wishing I'd shut up: www.oprah.com/article/omagazine/omag

00305_beck/

Be sure to click through all 7 pages worth, to get a better idea of what the book is all about!

Bye now - gotta get some more stuff done at work before I can wipe 2009 off my slate! :)

Cheers,
Maya

Don't worry Penguin, I'm not really down on myself for not being so into the wins because of my schedule. I was just checking in... Thanks! It means a lot to me to have you and others support me.
emoticon Speaking of support, congratulations on successfully maintaining throughout december!

I had a good day yesterday, in spite of being at work. I had my lunch break walk and got into my "watcher" mode and the rest of the day was pretty easy. I ended up with only 1303 calories for the day.
Total points thru 12/30 is 113 out of 117 possible.

I'm feeling lazy today but I need to get my butt in gear so I can get my exercises in. Tonight we're making calzones which is really nice because I can use low fat cheeses and lots of veggies! Still, it may end up being a high calorie day which would be good.

I weighed in this morning and finished the year one pound under my challenge goal that I met December 4th. Also known as maintaining through the rest of the year, which was my December aim!

I'm probably being wayyyyy too anal about this, but I only have SP and F&V data through yesterday at this point. Wondering if I should report them tomorrow instead of today.

SparkPoints
12/18-12/23 = 6 (of 6).
12/24-12/30 =7 of 7.
Fruits & Veg
12/18-12/23 = 4 (of 6).
12/24-12/30 = 5 of 7.

The site was wonky last week for me, but today seems ok...I also found all my emails from SP in the spam folder.

Wow, 2009 is almost nada. I have 4 great workouts scheduled through the weekend and am going to try to eat in moderation on the Eve. That's about all there is left.

Susan. I don't think Martha would want you to set yourself up to feel bad about missing a four-day win. Seriously.

never mind: {Is the site all wonky to anyone else today? I suspect it's something to do with the number of people checking it out. I'm only getting the black screens and unloaded images in Internet Explorer. In Firefox I can see things fine, but the nutrition tracker has never worked for me in FF.}

I'm sort of off the wagon with the 4-day wins for the next few days... too many 12 hour days this week and I dropped the last one (as I mentioned in a previous post). I'm off tomorrow so I may start another one then. I'm on call on Friday and I'll be very unhappy if I get called in because they have me working the next 4 (12 hour shifts). Ouch! I know I'll survive but I like to have some time off to take care of Kooper (my parrot) and myself.

Ok, I'm done complaining... onward!

I had a good day yesterday, stayed in my range with 1440 calories for the day. I ate nutritious food, for the most part. Total points thru 12/29 is 112 out of 116 possible. Today I expect to walk during my lunch break which is nice. It's a beautiful day! I think I'll put myself into watcher mode during my walk!

Penguin, what a great job you did of exercising and, in general, being active while on vacation! I can't seem to get that done when I'm visiting my parents. Fortunately, I don't spend a lot of time with my family. When I do go I take my own drinks and breakfast food! I don't think I could handle cake around me so much, either! Even I day without cake in that situation is doing great!

First morning back and I got on the scale to see what's what. I am EXACTLY where I didn't want to go above by the end of the year. Which means I gained some while away (not surprising) but not as much as I thought I would, probably due to all the exercise.

And that is the lesson I'm taking away from this family gathering and this year: Exercise can be a regular part of my vacations and family gatherings, even if it's changing a long-standing pattern. In May when we visited, in October when we all gathered with other relatives, and again at christmas, we got ourselves some activity. It's a new pattern to overwrite the old one, which was sit around and be lazy for days.

DH and I were discussing when we left yesterday how much my mother is focused on sweets. "Oh, there's no more cake left for breakfast." She does say it with an ironic tone, but it's still the expectation that I think she is having. My favorite this past week was "Lucky Charms is the most nutritious junk cereal." It just didn't compute to me the premise of starting with wanting to get a junk cereal and then looking for whichever was the most "nutritious." I love my mom to pieces and don't mean to criticize, but it does explain some things.....

We are home. Went out immediately to the park on bikes and stroller and foot. It was very different doing city riding; a lot to get used to. 4yo is doing quite well for having had the bike just a few days, but he still struggles on hills. And occasionally aims right at my bike, resulting in some tangles.

Did you ever see Adam Sandler's thanksgiving family get together song (that's not what it's called, just a description) from SNL? It was sooo funny... the gist is about family fighting during the holiday.

I'm getting excited about the new challenge too... I'm looking forward to changing my new goals up. I haven't decided exactly what yet but it's going to based on Martha's stuff.

I had a really good day yesterday, calorie-wise, with under 1300 calories. I think it had something to do with spending part of my lunch time getting into watcher mode. My usual weak time is mid to late afternoon so being the watcher at that time was very useful. Total points thru 12/28 is 111 out of 115 possible.

Whoosh. Banner last family day here. My brother and I had a fight, and my sister had a meltdown. It's all fine, but stress was indeed produced.

I'm getting excited about New Year's. Starting a new challenge will be great, and I think I'll go post there right now what I'm considering, though Boo shouldn't etch it in stone yet.

I'm looking forward to the fresh start. I feel like I've flaked out over the holidays. They started out monumentally stressful, and then ended up really fun and I was so relieved I think I blew the whole week!

I'm such a work in progress...

Good idea to stop the Martha exercise that was hindering, not helping, SUSAN. If something doesn't feel right, it's the wrong time for us to be doing it, in my opinion. I think you're doing well with food and aren't a binge-er. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I just posted the continuation of this challenge, "2010 WIN". When we finish posting our December info here, we can start posting there for January. If you want to go there and start posting your plans for 2010, feel free to do it now.

Penguin, I also like "the Penguin". I've subscribed to Runner's World for a few years now and he always has a column. He has a nice relaxed take on running. I also have a book by Jeff Galloway (not the same one) and I think his walk/run program is great. I had a friend who had stopped running and I did the walk/run thing with her and before she knew it she was back to running! When were you in Anchorage? My mom is Alaskan and I lived there before I was 5 years old.

I decided I'm not doing Martha's exercise to stop eating. I'm just going to focus on keeping myself in the right frame of mind for now. It seems that when I relive the feeling of being out of control it gives me more anxiety. Maybe a pro could help me through it but I'm not up for doing it on my own.

I am doing ok with the calories, still, had under 1700 the last 2 days... Total points thru 12/27 is 110 out of 114 possible.

I'm at work for most of the week which kind of sucks because it's 12 hour shifts... Then I have to be on call on New Years Day and work the weekend. Yuck. I'll be happy when it's over. I got stressed out at work today because of the potential of my hours being changed so I walked (leisurely) during my lunch break and went into Watcher mode. I came back stress-free! I love that technique.

What a lovely description. You sound like you are in a wonderful place today Penquin...physically and emotionally. I love the book titles you posted. Especially Slow, Fat Triatheltes. I have gotten into working out in a way I never have before. I am thinking about working up to something like a 5k. I will look into that walk run method.

I love the article you posted, Boo. I realize that is how I have been working with my cravings/compulsive eating. I will read the articles related to that one. Working on this is a big key to the success of this whole process.

I went out and partied with a friend last night. I logged all food yesterday, but excluded the alcohol. I had a great time and was happy to release my wild child last night...she really needed that!

I'm sitting in the driveway watching children play outside in gorgeous weather. A little lap blanket is all I need. Kids are in long sleeves with no jackets.

I haven't eaten yet today. I got on my bike briefly, but my dog was trying to keep pace with me and I worried he would wear himself out. Plus I wanted to get back and play with the kids.

It's incredibly beautiful here today.

I just tried to catch up a bit on all of the posts that apparently were hiding from me. I think we could publish this and all end up living on the lake (well, that's what we call it in these here parts when one makes it big!)

The struggles and the responses, encouragement, advice; the successes and the support.

YOU'RE ALL AMAZING. Thanks for being here!

I get weird glitches every once in awhile, too, Jana.

I think we've decided to stay in Florida until Tuesday. That's when my sister is leaving. The other choice is wait until bedtime tomorrow night and let the kids sleep in the car. That could backfire on us if they don't sleep -- or if we need to stop and can't because we'll wake them up. Of course, that happened during the daytime, too. Such decisions.

Yes, I have been. And I think I missed out on a sale item since I waited. Oh, well.

90% of what I got this year is fitness related. The nonfitness items were a crossword puzzle book and ... I cannot think of anything else!

The four kids have been chaotic at times today, angelic at others.

I've got three new books to study now, all exercise related:
The Courage to Start, by John "the Penguin" Bingham.
Slow Fat Triathlete, by Jayne ____ (can't think of it and the book's upstairs).
Running until You're 100, by Jeff Galloway.

I've long been a fan of The Penguin (imagine that!). When DH was training for the marathon I started reading him, and he spoke at the night-before banquet in Anchorage.

Jeff Galloway has a run-walk method of running training that might be good for me.

I requested Slow Fat Triathlete and even told my mom not to be hesitant to get it for me because of the name!

Ran today; lovely overcast weather with a bit of chill to the air. Wore one of my new long-sleeved running tops.

I'm glad Christmas is finally over. Now I can order more stuff that I want/need for running.

Guilt(about past) and worry(about future) both make it difficult to live in the present.

I thought PENGUIN was making a tongue-in-cheek joke about guilt, since I'm positive she knows intellectually that guilt and unfortunate food choices that we've already made don't go together. We can feel regret without thinking we're guilty of something horrible that deserves punishment.

I'm curious to read your thoughts, MAYA. So, I'm off to check out your blog.

In the meantime, here's a link to one of SP Coach Dean's articles about healthy guilt and toxic guilt. He's one of my favorite shrinks.

Yeah, I was very lazy yesterday... got next to nothing done.

I was in my calorie range yesterday, under 1700 calories. But there was a bit of a struggle... I think I need to do something besides vegetate, like stay busy.

Another factor, I'm in the chapter of Martha's book about binging. I don't really consider myself a binger but I took the last experience of out of control eating and tried to apply the techniques to stop. So you have to re-experience the whole thing and tell yourself it's ok, continuing until it is. I found it hard to feel ok about it and so I was a little unsettled and found myself hungry yesterday. I will try again today because I know that I have binged in the past and I want to be able to stop.

Have a great day, everyone.

You know you're getting lazy

when you check the weather network website instead of going to the window to check whether it's raining or snowing so you can decide how to dress!

Yeah.

Just did that. :)

Have a NON-lazy day - go to the window! :)

Tummy remedies ... in Indian grocery stores, they sell a little round green capsule marketed under the name "Pudin Hara": it's just an extract of mint oil. Swallow whole. It works, usually within a half hour, to settle an upset stomach. Works for me. :) Haven't needed it in years, though. :)

Penguin, your comment about "I'm setting aside the question of whether guilt is ever an appropriate response to food intake" made me think.

I started out writing in here, but it got long and windy so I sent it off to blog-land instead. :)

Bottom line, in *my* experience, whether or not it's appropriate, it's certainly not a very effective response. :) The more I stress, strangely, the more I eat! :)

Cheers,
Maya

Bowling got postponed. I'm here to make a deal with myself: No cake tonight, which means no cake at all today and a day of moderate eating that fits my calorie range. In return I can have cake tomorrow AND I get the satisfaction of not feeling guilty either day.

P.S. I'm setting aside the question of whether guilt is ever an appropriate response to food intake.

I ate too much yesterday- now my tummy is all upset, and nothing is settling right. Nothing seems FINE, though, after noshing for hours yesterday. So, I had my oatmeal this morning, and nothing since. Que serra- I'm ok with it all. No drinks, just good food yesterday. And- got to go to the new Sherlock Holmes movie. Sweet!

Thanks, everyone. My sister just arrived, and she's in full shock mode from this predivorce messiness. Mom has four grandkids ages 1 to 4, so there is plenty of distraction.

I skipped lunch; just haven't been hungry enough for it. I also talked to my sister about the concept of being naturally thin and whether she finds that she automatically self-corrects her eating when she starts to gain. She thinks that what fluctuates more is her activity level. She said right now she finds that her jeans are too tight and with the stress of the past few weeks she has been eating junk and not working out enough (she did two sprint triathlons this year). But she has plans to start working out again, possibly as soon as tomorrow. I'm going to try to keep encouraging her. At the moment she's trying out my bike.

Tonight: Bowling. My sister-in-law has been in our lives for 11 years and I've never met her family. This should be fun.

I love hearing details of everyone's holiday. We are building happy lives that include food without letting it OWN us. I feel all warm and fuzzy about that. We're on our way to the mindset of the effortlessly lean.
emoticon

A holiday without shame, with no berating of ourselves is a terrific gift to have given ourselves. It actually helps us eat less than we might otherwise (and enjoy it MORE). Amazing.

I am skipping our WEEKLY SUMMARY this week, since I feel lazy (in a GOOD way). Our final YEAR-END SUMMARY will be available next THURSDAY, before the ball drops in Times Square.

Oh Susan,

That sounds amazing. To go into such a loaded eating situation and not get triggered into old eating habits. I am very impressed by you.

Today is an interesting day because the day after eating a lot previously would have set me into overeating mode. I am looking forward to staying in my calorie range...which was just recently lowered by Spark...but even if I go over by 100 or so calories I am in good shape.
I am motivated by your post Susan and by Penguin's a bit back that sticking to goals and continue to see results feels so great.

Thanks guys.

Cassie, I'm so glad to hear that you were able to enjoy your food with no guilt!

Penguin, I know how you feel and it will be alright! You'll probably not feel at your best today but maybe tomorrow you'll be back to normal. Btw, great job on your bike riding, that's great cross-training for running! I use it when I can't run and (ideally) once a week. It makes your running better. Your weather sounds like mine... I'm in North Florida and it was warm and just cooled off again yesterday.

My bf and I drove to my parents house yesterday where 2 of my brothers and their families had already gathered. My bf drove and that was excellent because before we arrived I did the watcher exercise.

On the car ride, I also got to tell my bf about Martha Beck's cognitive techniques (he has a lot of anxiety too). I hope he will try the watcher technique to give himself a rest from the anxiety.

I managed to (pretty much) stay in watcher mode through out the visit. I decided I would make my wild child happy and eat what ever I wanted. I knew I had lots of time to eat so I didn't take any of the chocolates sitting out (like I would have previously) prior to the meal. When I sat down to eat I took small portions and ate slowly while talking. I had a piece of pie which I ate slowly and even removed some of the crust because it wasn't doing it for me.

In short, it was a major triumph for me because usually when I go to my parents house I eat uncontrollably for the entire visit!

Yesterday, I ended up with under 1700 calories!I also had under 1700 calories the day before that... Total points thru 12/25 is 108 out of 112 possible.

WooHoo! The holidays were fun! I was so freaked out about them the day before, but I thik I felt kind of like a normal person. I indulged in the holiday fare...I even ate cheesecake here at home and lunch and at night. But, I had some, felt satisfied and stopped thinking about food.

I truly am feeling the blaze of glory...and it can actually be quite subtle. Its pride in my accomplishments of weight loss, fitness, increased energy and health. Its also feeling like my addiction/compulsion towards food has lifted. I can be around food and not become out of control. I can have some...and then some, and then be done. The party has an ending. I think that was the difference before in terms of holidays..the food party never ended.

I feel great today. Just to share my day yesterday...it was my daughter waking at 5:10AM. She was very happy with all her gifts. I had a cold and was wishing for more rest. I managed to lay down and doze a bit for about an hour. Later we went into Manhattan. Wlaked around Rockfeller Center...you can not believe how crowed it is. WE then met my family for a Chinese Feast which included Peking Duck, lots of other excellent dishes. I also had a Mai Tai!

It was fun. WE were laughing, my daughter got more gifts which was thrilling. MY husband and I were getting along whihc is HUGE.

Overall a Merry Christmas was had by all!

Oh, and my husband bought a Wii Sport System. He also bought me a game..its the work out done by the Biggest Loser Female Trainer...I hope she doesn't yell at me!

Love to all who have read this far!

Penguin, congratulations! I can tell you're loving the bike - great present!

Enjoy!

The eating? It's the holidays. *Shrug* You'll be working it off rapidly over the next few weeks as life gets back to normal and we all have fewer socially sanctioned irresponsible impulses. :)

Yeah, I know what I'm talking about. 4,000 calories has been quite normal for me this past fortnight - and I don't even have the excuse that I was eating out! :) More like "acting out!" That WildChild of mine has definitely being acting more than a little whacked out recently, and I'm not liking the look of the "morning belly", I tell ya! :)

Have a great Boxing Day, all. I'm gonna work at the kiddie store, but I get off early enough that I can then go trolling for deals myself! :P

Cheers,
Maya

I'm excited about going out again tomorrow!

I ate one helluva lot of food today. Eat eat eat eat eat. Something in the neighborhood of 4,000 calories. Ugh. I feel sloggy. But I did run, and I did get on that bike. And I can keep remembering how icky this feels. And how wonderful being on that bike felt! Supposed to be cooler here tomorrow. Today was just perfect for being outdoors. Guess I'll break out the jacket for tomorrow.

I'm going to invite the Watcher over for the afternoon.

Family issues just keep popping up. There's no standoff going on, and in general it feels a lot better than when my dad lived here, but some not-so-great stuff. Feels like people are falling apart. On the bright side I'm feeling closer and closer to DH.

DS got a bike, and he started learning to ride it on the driveway earlier. It's pouring down rain now, though.

I got a bike. And my stocking was stuffed with workout stuff, much of which I purchased myself.
emoticon

DH got earphones, too, which reminds me my older son and I need to wrap some more presents now that DH is taking the younger one up for a nap. We will open the rest of the gifts on Sunday.

Awww, Penguin. Glad we could help!

Yeah, I've done the same on many occasions, come here intending to 'fess up, and been reminded that there really isn't ANYTHING to 'fess up to - it's all just part of life.

You guys, my heart is feeling lighter just checking in here. I came with an awful feeling to confess some sins and feel my own retribution, and instead I found light and hope and reminders of freedom. What a lovely gift you are giving to anyone who checks in here!
emoticon

So, a hard day. A hard 400-mile trip. Well, not all 400 miles were difficult, but some severe fussiness and it was crowded since we were stuffed to the gills with prezzies. A cut-short nap and wired kids = late bedtime.

It's much much warmer here than where I live, so the air conditioning is on (!) and I'm sure I will be hot for much of the weekend. I didn't have great coping skills during the trials and fusses of the trip, but I did write down (on a memo in my phone) every single bite I ate. It was a lot and I haven't logged it here yet. I will, tomorrow.

My own computer isn't connecting and we're too tired and fussy to figure out why, so I'm using Mom's. Tomorrow it's supposed to rain all day. I'm excited for my boys' excitment in the a.m., but we discovered that the "big" gift for my younger boy didn't make the trip. He's 1, so it shouldn't be a big deal, but on top of a day like today and with all the loaded feeling of Christmas Eve, I was sorely disappointed.

Nevertheless, things aren't nearly as bad for me as for my sister. She's not here yet because she and her soon-to-be-ex are going through the messiness. I'm sure tomorrow will be miserable for her.

And lest all the above sound like a downer, I repeat that I feel lighter in the past 15 minutes of reading this thread than I have felt in hours.

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for all the words of wisdom.

I was able to enjoy the food and drink. somehow I have been so disciplined it was freaking me out to think that I was going to do some celebrating. But, it good. I actually felt good. When one is not consuming excessive calories day in and day out it doesn't feel all that terrible to feast. I splurged and then splurged somemore and then I felt that I was really not hungry, really had enough and stopped even though I could have eaten more.

Victory!

My daughter finally went to bed. She was superexcited today and had a melt down when we got home.....but at least tomorrow morning will end the anticipation.

Got to crash, but just wanted to stop by my landing pad.

Love you all. Peace.

Happy daze, folk.
I'm in for the 4 day thingie... gotta get the book, you guys are kicking my hienie.
I'm sure I lost some weight on my 10 day saga... but I ran out of BP meds the last 2 days, and I think I won't see the change until my meds catch back up with me. After all- I ate pretty darn well, and burned a ton of calories....
If I don't show a pundage change... well, I didn't gain, either. Still, I think no diuretic for 2 days is why my weight was the same.

Thanks, Maya!

And I'm glad you walked today, like you said 1 choice at a time! And I'm really glad you shared your popcorn, what a great idea! Enjoy your dinner tonight!

My real test will be tomorrow: x-mas dinner with my family. I'm determined to enjoy it though... whatever the outcome! My Mom is confused today and got me all stressed out thinking that dinner was tonight (I'm not going to be there until mid-day tomorrow). So, feeling the pit in my stomach, I called back and spoke with my db and sil... dinner is tomorrow afternoon. Whew! I had to go do the exercise Martha calls "Becoming the Watcher" for a few minutes. Fortunately, I did that before I took a bite of the truffle I got out. I came back and calmly had 3 partial pieces, knowing, and in control of what I was doing. I don't know if I would have had the strength to stop if I hadn't done that exercise. I feel good about it... now I'm going to go for a run... maybe I'll have time for strength training!

Oh, and here's my announcement/treat for finishing "Becoming the Watcher" 4-day win. I did it and I continue to learn how to implement it. So, Yay Me!

You go, MAYA. As usual, I love your EVERY WORD.

Just an observation---life is MORE than food, but food matters. We've learned to give food and drink a lot of emotional importance.

We all know, from past experience, that we'll feel wonderful if we don't overeat during holidays. Still, if hallucinations caused by months of our best behavior get to us and WE CHOOSE to give in to our eating cues and triggers and just "let 'er rip" (eating like there's no tomorrow), it's NOT A CRIME. The key to recovery if we make the "let 'er rip" decision is to avoid punishing ourselves.

I'm hoping to go in the direction of eating only as long as I'm loving it, instead of treating it as a "time out" (excuse to let it all hang out). To paraphrase an old saying, "I'll eat 'til my heart's content."
emoticon
Weight today, 170.8, same as last week. I like this "maintaining on purpose" stuff. This week I experimented with daily weigh-ins, with the objective of only expecting to stay in my challenge range of 169 to 175. It bounced around and stayed in range. I think "expectation" is what makes me anxious sometimes. Expecting to lose(i.e. REQUIRING that I lose) every time I step on a scale can act like a sledge hammer above my head. I was able to feel calm at the scale this week, and it was nice.
emoticon
Still getting in over 60 SparkPoints every day.

ALMOST FORGOT. The dance team got another "Standing O" (not the sexual kind, but almost) after our performance at the Bucks game last night. I "high-5'ed" some guy on the way off the court. Today, I learned it was my husband's big boss. (I THOUGHT he looked familiar.)

Susan, I think you did just great yesterday. You said you pigged out, and yet you came in within your target calorie range. To me, that's tremendous success, so I hope you're treating yesterday as a success and using it to build up your feelings of achievement and pride in your own success!

And yay on doing so well today, too! Keep it up!

One choice at a time, right?

This morning, I walked 3 miles to work (after a week of ZERO exercise), and on the way I wandered into the local drug-store and bought myself some treats - popcorn, TWO boxes, one regular and one "light", the microwaveable variety.

My rationale? "Well, I've always wondered what that microwave popcorn tastes like, and I don't know if I would prefer the regular or the light, so how about I get the biggest box of each?"

Sigh.

Got to work, realised that only a handful of people had shown up. And here I was with a dozen, 100-gram, bags of popcorn.

So, I did the obvious thing.

I threw an impromptu popcorn party.

In no time at all (yeah, it's a software company, we're ALL always hungry!), the popcorn was ALL GONE, my colleagues and I had huge smiles and we'd done some casual bonding over the kernels, and we all went back to our desks feeling just a little bit happier at having come in to work on Christmas Eve while everyone else is off partying.

And I only had two little bowlfuls of popcorn. I don't know (and I don't care) which kind it was - tasted butter, so probably the regular one, but it doesn't matter.

I just know I've never had quite that much fun for 13 bucks. :)

We won't bother talking about the fabulous lunch I had and the super-duper dinner I'll be having tonight! :)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, everyone!

Cheers,
Maya

Cassie. Stop. STOP!

You're WELL below where you'd originally estimated. You've been eating healthy and getting in the exercise - it's never going to be a one-shot, do-it-till-you're-perfect-and-then-stop deal! You're going to be generally making the best choice most of the time, and every once in a while, you will CHOOSE to indulge in something that really, really appeals to you, and that is FINE!

So, let yourself off the hook. It *is* the holidays. Eat and drink the things you love! Focus on enjoying the family and friends you're going to be around. Stay aware of your choices, but don't feel you need to follow a rule-book ... just check in with yourself every half-hour or so and ask lovingly if you want any more of whatever. If not, then focus on something else for the next half hour.

Take it ONE hour at a time, you're going to do JUST GREAT!

And remember, it's a journey, the destination is still years and years and years away ... :)

Happy holidays!

Hugs,
Maya

I had another off day yesterday, just off center. Work threw me another loop... another call-in... another change of location and work partners. But I did pretty well this time (of course, there was no x-mas party either), ate mindfully, slowly, sitting down. When I got home I had calories left for some chocolate with my bf, I had tiny slices of several truffles. I stayed up later than planned but only ate my planned apple (late).

Total points thru 12/23 is 106 out of 110 possible.

Relax Cassie, it's going to be ok. Repeat to yourself over and over (for 10 minutes in a quiet, safe place): It's ok. It's ok to rest. How much I eat or weigh makes no difference in the grand scheme of things. What matters most is kindness. I will start by being kind to myself. Give your inner animal some support and she will relax and help you enjoy yourself. Yes, it's ok to enjoy your holiday meal(s). That's Martha Beck's technique (it works for me). I pick 2 or 3 things to repeat over and over. The statements that resonate with you. You deserve to be relaxed and enjoy your meals! You've done phenomenally well, accomplished so much! Have a planned high calorie day! That's what I do. Don't think about your goal, just support your body. The scale doesn't tell the whole story! Having a higher calorie day actually does your metabolism good in the long run.

I weighed in at work yesterday which is my official weigh in scale...still at 226lbs.

I am obsessing and actually freaking out about the last pound. I oushed myself hard and set a goal higher then I normally would. I was going to do 230 and then figured what the heck...go for 225.

Can you guys please tell me that I have accomplished a lot and that it is o.k. to enjoy the holiday like a normal person which would involve eating some special treats among other indulgences? And like a normal person I'll also so no when I've had enough and keep it light when I can at home.

I think because I did not make my goal before Christmas I am kind of freaked because I do want to enjoy some food and drinks. My intention was just to touch the goal lightly knowing that I will be living in a fluctuation.
I actually might have done that today...My scale is off by 8 pounds, but I did have a good showing under 220 which might have been 225 if I were at work.

I know this is so obssessive and I definitely think I could use an intervention. I am going bonkers over these silly numbers!!!!!!!!!!

After a week of wild fluctuations, I'm up a pound. Still below the challenge maintenance weight by a pound, though.

WT 12/24: 211.6 +1
SP 12/18-12/23 = 6 (of 6).
FV 12/18-12/23 = 4 (of 6).

I suspect the spinach quiche had a lot more calories than I gave it credit for.

~DANCINGPENGUIN~
Goals:
1. Earn a minimum of *40* SPARKPOINTS per day. [Changing from 30 to 40 as of 10/9.]

Have a great trip, Jol! We'll be here when you get back!

Welcome back, Mare!

Penguin- I like what Maya said also... I don't have any successful personal experience to offer. I have peeked at some coming chapters in Martha Beck's book and I know there's one on just that topic. I can't wait to get there!

I haven't checked in for 2 days, it's been busy at work (which is my only available time with my 12 hour shifts).

On Monday I had a good day, kept my calories in my low to mid-range and my head in a calm place.

Yesterday was the x-mas party at work. It was a busy day and I was off balance for various reasons... I ended up bringing several desserts back to my office where I ate them all in just a few minutes. It was a good thing that I was limited by what I decided to bring with me or it would have been even less pretty!

Anyway, I'm giving myself a point for yesterday (and Monday) because I was due for a high calorie day and I actually ended up with under 1900 calories. Total points thru 12/22 is 105 out of 109 possible.

Penguin, what's working for me (when I let it) is simply using Martha Beck's two rules (paraphrased):
- eat ONLY what I love
- stop as soon as I'm not loving it any more - i.e., as soon as my initial craving for the flavour or whatever has changed to the "I'm not really craving it any more, but it's on my plate, so I'd better finish it" mode. :)

Of course, there has been much more than one (or ten) occasion(s) in the recent past where I didn't let those 2 rules into my head ...

Jol, so proud of you for sticking with just eating what you want - that's GOT to be great for the sane-eating model! Bon voyage!

Cheers,
Maya

G'morning. I'm making new cards to carry with me. These are less focused on overall goals in the future and much more related to why to stop now, or why this bite counts. (Yes, I just blogged about the topic, but I'm putting my resources together to get ready for the upcoming holiday trip.)

Any tips on what you tell yourself to stop overeating during the process?

Hi everyone,
I had a sane eating day yesterday: I ate what I wanted and ran 100 laps in the morning.

I'm packing this morning for our trip and I probably won't check in again until January 3 or 4.

I hope you all have a fantastic end of the year and I look forward to 2010 back here with you!

Penguin -- I hope your child continues to recover and I admire how you have coped. I often think that I will not cope well if my husband ever gets sick; but then again, humans "rise to the occasion", don't we? You are an example. Thank you for sharing your struggles with us.

Thinking of all you and see you next year.

Love this: "she helps me unlearn some of the useless mainstream dieting mentality crap."

(P.S. That's supposed to represent the cabbage diet.)

I started a reintroduction thread in the intro forum. For regulars to get in early before newbies start coming to find us in a few days.
