I guess that the only new thing in my routine today is that I taught class at 6 am then had to come to work! Usually I sub that class when I'm off and the regular instructor needs someone to cover, but today I went and taught then I came home and got ready for work.

OH, did I post this already? We got a new trampoline? I've never had one so that's new.

I rearranged some furniture in my LR last Friday - put the desk in a place where it used to be but it hasn't been in that spot for several years :)

OH, went to a picnic on Saturday night - this was a new group for us. I knew some of the people but my dd & bf had never met them. We got there late (not a new thing for us - LOL) so we missed the food :(

Other than that I'm doing the same kind of stuff most of the time.

Hey all, these new things were last week. We had a storybook vacation, and it was all unexpected. Maybe I'll write a blog about it.

The spirit of this NEW challenge is more about the new things we do in our everyday worlds, though. It's made me think about how rigid my routines have become--and I think of myself as a spontaneous person!

Lala-Sounds so fun!! I love opera in dress-up clothes AND the new Met Broadcasts where you're in jeans and eating popcorn at the movies. Fun!

I'm SO out of the loop here...between vacations and out of towner family coming here I don't know if I'm coming or going. I'm ready to get back in my comfy routine.

Unfortunately my only "new" is an episode of severe back pain. Yuck!!

Lala - that sounds really neat!

This weekend we went to the new ballpark (for the AAA team in town) and I had never been there. It was fun, and there were 2 bands, we watched the fireworks, which I've never seen outside - I've been inside a building to watch them once and I've driven by them on my way home or elsewhere in the past, but I've never actually sat downtown and watched them! Now my dd is addicted and wants to go again next year - LOL. We listened to the band who played a lot of Beach Boys kind of stuff and dd had a blast dancing in front of the stage which basically sat on second base. It was a lot of fun!

Hey folks! I did a new thing over the 4th of July weekend - two new things in one, actually.

Down in the "artsy" part of town we have an independent movie theater that shows indie and foreign films. We had been talking about trying it out for years, but never made the time. Well, Sunday began their "Summer Opera" season, so we finally made the time to go. It was a really nifty place. They have tables and chairs and serve snacks, dinners, and salads, plus coffees, teas, and desserts.

My husband had noticed, while driving by, that the theater was showing "Don Giovanni", the Mozart opera (it's actually a filming of the opera as performed at the 2008 Salzburg Festival). I would say that it's his favorite opera, but technically it's the only one he's ever seen, so... But anyway, he was pretty excited about it and wanted to take me to experience that. I'm glad he did! It was really nice.

I do think that I'd like to go to a proper, put-on-the-formal-duds-and-go-to-town opera, but this was as close as I had ever been to one. It looks like we're going to make the effort to go see the other four operas in the series, too, and a couple of the foreign films they're going to carry over the next month look good, too.

Yes, I'm sorry about your dog, too. But, as you say, sometimes we have to make the humane choice, even though it's difficult. These animals become like family members to us.

About 6 yrs ago, I held my aged kitty, who was in severe pain, (stomach cramping that was visible)while she received "the" shot. Her immediate relaxation and relief was a beautiful thing to witness. That was a new experience for me at the time, and it made losing her much easier.

You'll have to let us know if the Spark Rally is as much fun as it sounds like it would be.

I log it all t0 SP and then I have a spreadsheet where I can calculate my calorie deficit :) The Spreadsheet is the "official" document - LOL.

FYI - today was almost 3 hours of working out. 55 mins Cycling. 50 mins Abs. 55 mins Strength Training.

But, I do have some sad news. My "new" thing yesterday was having to take my dog into the vet. He was very, very sick with cancer all thru his body and he took a very bad turn. We had to do the humane thing and end his suffering. Not a new thing I recommend people do but sadly something new to me since I had never done that before.

OK - on to happier news! Today is the Ohio Spark Rally so I'm off to meet lots and lots of people from around Ohio from SP! Very excited about that :)

Funny- I haven't logged the 'over 120' minutes, since they didn't show up in my cumulative minutes. I need to 'get over it' so I have an accurate record.

I never noticed that either. I just now went to SparkAmerica and it does say that only 120 minutes in a day can count for SparkAmerica.

When I click on My SparkAmerica, the red area on the left of the SparkAmerica home page, and then click on See Recent Tracking, I get daily fitness logs of my fitness activity from the first day I joined in Jan of 2008 until today.

Those logs include everything I've tracked, even the stuff that went over 120 in a given day. But, there are little disclaimers stating that only 120 minutes of the day counted for SparkAmerica. At least, you have a complete record if you want to do more on some days.

I can see their logic. In pace challenges, there are people who would exercise to levels that could harm their health, partially to win the challenge and partially because they have an "unhealthy" exercise addiction.

I do know that there are days when we want to do an exercise activity that takes all day or half a day. And that's good for us on occasion, not every day.

So, thanks for teaching us something we didn't know, MARE.

No SparkPoints, no SparkAmerica credit beyond 120 minutes per day. We can log ALL minutes, though, for our own record-keeping use.

Really?? I never paid attention to that! So what I see on the right - the 2048 minutes - I just checked and it's not right... it should be 2168. But I have also found it to not be immediately updated either. Hmmm. Never noticed!

It's the fact that it doesn't add to my fitness minutes- I watch that like a hawk, for whatever reason. I have 10,093 racked up this year... but it would be much more if they would let me do over 2 hours in a day.
I used to put in small stuff, like adding stairs, or short walks- now it's all pretty much hard core, I worked hard at it hours. I would like to see what that number would be if they added the whole amount. Like when I do 4 hours of hiking and 3 hours of kayaking and, and, and....
Do the fitness minutes cheer any body else up?

You can track more that 2 hours exercise. You just don't get SparkPoints beyond the 2 hours.

Sometimes I really wish that Spark let us track more than 2 hours a day. I mean, I sort of understand it, as an appropriate limit to the site. Sigh.
I love it when I put in over 2 hours in a day.

I'm on vacation in Bryce Canyon. We hiked a new trail called Queen's Garden. This was after a trail called Peek-A-Boo that I had done previously. All together, it was a 3+ hour hike and over 1,000 calories. Yippee!

Today - I got in the pool with my daughter after my workout and it felt wonderful! I wore a new bathing suit I had ordered back in February and well - IT'S TOO BIG! It fit ok but the bust is definitely too big.

Hmmm - I posted a blog about a big new change that I am thinking of implementing in my life so I've done a lot of thinking about it and looking things up. We'll see what happens with that!

Sailing blue ocean waters for 10-15 hours a day- that was wonderful, and new.
Taking the bus home, hoping into the bus seat and thinking how roomy they were- that felt great.

Hey, Earth Wind and Fire, eh? That fits right in with my morning disco obsession... :)

My new thing today is silly. I had to run out to the corner store for milk this morning, so I actually went out in public in a strappy tank top. I've never, ever, ever been seen totally sans sleeves in public. I just decided I didn't give a crapola what anyone thought today.

Good morning!

Friday I went to my book club and it was at someone's house I had never been to. It was great fun. We sat out in her new patio on her new furniture in a part of Columbus called Victorian Village. The houses there are all over 100 years old!

Saturday I finally took a spinning class taught by Beth - I hadn't had her as an instructor yet. Then that afternoon/evening we went to a festival that had a carnival. I ate some Louisiana Bourbon Chicken that I had never had before and it was delicious :)

Today it's chores in and outside of the house but then we are going to the Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire concert. I've never seen them in concert - so that's going to be a blast!

Sue-Boo, congratulations to your DH on his induction into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame. I hope you enjoyed your trip.

I know what you mean about having to get out "those clothes." I've been getting mine ready for NY, for the restaurants in the evening. We can wear jeans anywhere in Austin. Trying to pack light, what I'm taking is like restaurant-serving-uniforms: black pants, tops - I'm still thinking of changing it up - I won't care about it once I'm there, but I'll be wearing outfits I'd never wear here!

Another poorly-worded post - I'm sure you sparkled in your trophy-wife clothes - not like my nondescript-trip clothes. I might take navy instead of black!

Adoptmom - You've gone without the pain med. AND the carbs - to have lost that much weight after surgery when you couldn't move around much MUST feel terrific.

New for me today, and it's really small: I went out to water with the hose the part of the grass where the sprinkler doesn't do the job - and I was in the middle of a bustling neighborhood for the first time in a few years. I've really slacked off on any A.M. watering for awhile. Somehow, I haven't been outside when any other neighbors were, 'in forever.' (There are people in these houses?)

It was so different. I can go weeks without seeing anyone here except one next door neighbor. Our grass has suffered from my slacking, and we've discussed finally having sprinklers put in this fall, dep. on $$$ -

What's making progress is that I haven't gained weight! I'm actually down about 3lbs. I'm not sure how that is occurring because I constantly crave carbs.

Nothing new for me today. I've been occupied, getting packed and dressed for an overnight visit to Elkhart Lake. The DH is in the Wisconsin Broadcasters' Hall of Fame, and I have to look the part of a "trophy wife" at dinner. (No sweats or jeans allowed. And that's about all I own.)

Today my I took my daughter to a yoga class called Centergy. It was a new routine for me; a totally new class for my daughter; and the first time we'd gone together. She loved it! Hopefully the first of many classes we'll attend.

Hmmm - OK, something new today was that I did my step routine "backwards" so we did the segments in reverse order. Had the regulars really shaking their heads wondering what I was doing - LOL.

Oooh! What Cirque did you go to? The one in Orlando is the only one I've seen (La Nouba) and it is mind blowing!

Today I went to my first Campus Freethought Alliance meeting at UCF. It was interesting, if a little over my head. It was, however, so good to see a room full of really smart, young, thinking people. The young man who presented this evening was a philosophy major (!) and spoke about a book by Julian Jaynes on the evolution of the consciousness. What I understood was interesting, but bits of it seemed improbable. Apparently the author's theories were never well received and poorly understood (I know that *I* poorly understood them). Here's a link to some info if anyone wants to check it out:

Wow - that is certainly pretty darn cool! I have always wanted to see a Cirque show :)

My new thing is that I got a new Blackberry yesterday. Still working with it - learning how to use it. It's pretty neat.

Today I walked on stilts.

I'm afraid of heights and get very shaky, but we went to a Cirque du Soleil 25th birthday event and they had stilts for everyone. My DH tried them out and wound up falling (gently) to the ground. He told me it would be too hard. So what do I do, but strap them on and wore them for the rest of the event! He was good to stay close to me for balance. Cirque was hoping to get enough people to get the world record for stilts today.

Hey all!

Jazz - every day we get a new opportunity! Just hop on up and keep going...

Mare - I think that's the best thing about eating at really great restaurants is that the food is so satisfying that you can take your time, eat mindfully, and still be content with a reasonable portion.

Have a great week ya'll!

I went to a hella good Italian Restaurant tonight. Got wonderful food- ate an appropriate amount of it. Enjoyed. All normal.
What blew me away- I got a tiramisu.
I split it.
And then- a miracle- I didn't finish my half. We are talking a really, really, really good Italian restaurant. With fresh, wonderful tiramisu.
And- I didn't clean the plate. I did have each bite very slowly. I did inhale the dusty cocoa smell on top- I did revel in a slightly new taste- they had a clotted cream that was slightly sour to top it. Nice.
I left a good 3 bites of my half. I left a pool of cream, a dusting of chocolate, a dollup of whipped cream. No plate licking!
I did take the last of the fresh mint leaf with me.
Nice.

Lala, good for you! Shake your bootie! I love reading all these posts.

My new: I watched an episode of a show I've never seen before "True Blood". The best part of it was that 2 of my kids are home from school, one from Indiana and one from Portland, and we watched it together...which made it be a wonderful evening.

I haven't done very well in all other aspects of my goals: water-no, tracking-no, exercise-very little...so it's great to check in and see that all is well in Sparkland and tomorrow is another day, right???!!!!

New thing today: I dyed my hair by myself for the first time ever. Since it was just the three small places, it was much easier than I expected. I didn't do the greatest job in the world, but next time I'll know what to expect and will do better!

Not new, but on the getting out of the house and doing social activities front: went to a concert at the House of Blues last night with hubby and some friends. (It was Better than Ezra with opening act Tyrone Wells - both were fantabulous!) Also not new, I boogied my bum off - as only a heavyset middle-aged suburban white girl can! Okay, I looked like a dork, but so did all of the other heavyset middle-aged suburban white girls, and they were all too drunk to care about my dorkiness anyway...

We have a pool and a hotub and I enjoy getting in them naked. However, it's a rare opportunity since we have kids around. They still freak out when I talk about going to the topless beach in Jamaica. LOL They insist that there's no way I'd ever do such a thing. I offered to go again when we were in Italy but they weren't up for that for some reason. ROFL!

My only "laying (almost) naked in the sun" was the topless deck of a cruise ship.

Anyway, I tried "quinoa" today for the first time. I cooked it and mixed it with olive oil, lemon juice, basil, salt, pepper and carmelized onion, celery and green pepper. Very tasty and very healthy.

Friday my daughter took me to a site in Berkely that is a free hot tub place. A family has made this place available to the public.
Now, that totally rocks. There is a code to get in, and you have to be taken by somebody the first time. Solitude, greenery, laying naked in the sun. The rules require any man to bring a woman with or he isn't to go in, so it's mainly women.
I hike in a very steep hilly place right near this, and today I went back alone.
Totally nice.
Rules there are- silence and respect.
I've got a new fave.
Right about 3 miles from my house.
Sweet.

We like extra firm tofu pressed to remove most of the water then "marinated" in whatever sauce you like. Tofu teriaki is pretty good, as is peanut satay tofu.

There are two ways we used to eat tofu: with chunks of it in scrambled eggs, with more ingredients, whatever you like - my DH loves cilantro; and "BBQ Tofu," cut firm tofu in chunks, add BBQ sauce or something lo-cal, for flavor, and bake in the oven - but I don't remember what temperature or how long.

Reading about the veg's in the CSA boxes is interesting. Who knew beets weren't "born pickled" - and chard and kohlrabi - what adventures in cooking. How many people eat the same few veg's over and over! ! !

Boo, thanks for telling me about the "hair glue." I might need some.

My reading's way ahead of my actions--Lean Cuisine is not far back in my past--here are some links from Michael Pollan's book In Defense of Food, to help connect with local farmers in your area:

Maybe you can SHARE some of your new things for a day when one of us needs to borrow a "new" thing, BARB(mydays).

Lots of adventure ahead for Molly the Cocker, too. I'm excited for you. This was one of those scary things that you made happen. So, I'll be grinning and living vicariously throughout your move.

I can't wait to try the pumpkin lasagna, VIOLETTE. And I'm going to check with the farm that's a CSA in my area to see what time of year I need to sign up with them.

SWIFTURTLE, if clippies won't work in your hair, to keep you cool, Paul Mitchell has something in a bottle that looks like a bottle of Elmer's Glue. It's called extreme thickening glue. You put a small amount in your hands and rub them together. Then apply it where you need to in the hair, to keep it behind an ear, style (or spike...heh, heh) to keep it off your neck. It doesn't damage the hair and it stays where you put it.

MY new thing today:
I was at a style show luncheon, not new. On the way home I stopped at a park I hadn't been to before, since it's such a nice day. I've often thought of stopping there and just haven't done it. So, I took my shoes out of my gym bag, which usually stays in the car, put them on, and strolled through the park in cross trainers and a dress. There was a 2 mile nature trail (wooden sidewalk) through a wetlands area that was was gorgeous. And I had it all to myself. I'm thinking about taking my morning coffee and going there again. It's 12 minutes from my house and I had never been there in the 19 years I've lived here.

I tried tofu today for the first time. It wasn't bad. Kinda chewy. I think I would like it if it was in smaller pieces. Tomorrow I may tackle the kohlrabi that came in my CSA box.

Great challenge idea!!

My new for today was to search for a pet-friendly hotel. I've never travelled with pets before, and our cocker spaniel will be making the trip to Albuquerque with me on the 30th.

This challenge isn't quite fair for me because I will be doing so many new things in the next few months just by virtue of moving to a new place. I'm so excited! I could pop!

When we roast the beets we either peel them and slice them thin or just slice them with the skin on and then peel them when they are done. Once they are sliced toss in a little olive oil and season with salt and pepper if you'd like. Then spread them on a cookie sheet and roast until they are almost crispy. Seriously delish. From our farm share we got red, yellow and candy cane striped beets. We did a taste test and yes, they tasted different. We liked the yellow the best. Kind of "golden earthy" undertones.

The pumpkin lasagna is really good too. It can be a make ahead meal since the leftovers are as good as the first day. Make sure you use good parmesan - not the powder stuff. You can use less, and it is much more flavorful.

I LOVE BEETS!! I boil them, pickle them, can them :) And yes, I've experienced the inside and out red thing! It scared me the first time then I out two and two together and figured it out LOL.

I will have to print out that recipe too! Thanks!

I like the swiss chard recipe there and will check out Allrecipes.com. Swiss Chard is definitely a wonder food!

I put my laptop in a different spot today at my desk at work. That's the only new thing I did - oh, I am wearing new shoes but this is the 2nd time I've worn them ever - LOL. Not very adventurous am I?

NEW today: I'm going on a sales call by myself. I'm usually the office person (working at home in my jammies!). Off to the shower with me!

Kris, I sauted the chard with bacon (horrors!), white wine, garlic & added some lemon. Allrecipes.com had a whole bunch of recipes that I want to try...one had carmelized onions and goat cheese.

Violette, that lasagna recipe is now printed and in my kitchen. I LOVE pumpkin. Looks like a perfect fall meal, but I will try it much sooner. RE the beets: Did you boil them first, and then carmelize them in the oven?? The plain old boiled beets were wonderful. I ate so many that I turned red inside and out. Seriously. I didn't know that could happen??!!!!

We're in a CSA and love the swiss chard and beets. For swiss chard my FAVORITE recipe is pumpkin lasagna:
Pumpkin Lasagna - 4 Servings No need to roast fresh pumpkin for this dish (although you certainly could); using canned unseasoned pumpkin puree is much quicker, and it works just fine. Like most lasagnas, this one is easier to cut if left to set for ten minutes or so before serving.

INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 onions, chopped
2 pounds Swiss chard, tough stems removed, leaves washed well and chopped
2 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
3 cups canned pumpkin puree (one 28-ounce can)
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan
1/2 cup milk
9 no-boil lasagna noodles (about 6 ounces)
1 tablespoon butter

DIRECTIONS
In a large nonstick frying pan, heat the oil over moderately low heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, about 5 minutes. Increase the heat to moderately high and add the chard, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, 1/2 teaspoon sage, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Cook, stirring, until the chard is wilted and no liquid remains in the pan, 5 to 10 minutes.
Heat the oven to 400į. In a medium bowl, mix together 2 cups of the pumpkin, 3/4 cup cream, 1/2 cup Parmesan, and the remaining 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, 1/2 teaspoon sage, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg.
Pour the milk into an 8-by-12-inch baking dish. Top the milk with one third of the noodles, then spread half the pumpkin mixture over the noodles. Layer half the Swiss chard over the pumpkin and top with a second layer of noodles. Repeat with another layer of pumpkin, Swiss chard, and noodles. Combine the remaining 1 cup of pumpkin and 3/4 cup of cream. Spread the mixture evenly over the top of the lasagna, sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup of Parmesan, and dot with the butter. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake until golden, about 15 minutes more.

For the BEETS, we love them sliced and roasted in the oven until they carmelize on the outside. They are perfect in a mixed green salad with goat cheese and a mustard vinegarette.

My new thing for today is, the weather is hot and I CAN'T put my hair in a ponytail to be cooler, since I got a haircut yesterday. The plan had been, keep it longer for an easy ponytail--the same as I've done forever.

What's new about it is, I want to look less frumpy for our vacation to NY, to see our son. emoticon It's still long enough to be hot.

Tami - that is great about the walking! You'll be tearing it up before too long!

JAZZIEGIRL05 - Oooh - I LOVE Chard but what I've always done is pick it early and use it in my salads. I've heard to just sautee it with garlic and olive oil. Tell me how you cook it and what you think of it - I need new ideas too :)

Hi all, I had a big step forward in my goals today! No crutches for short hauls and only 1 for longer. I'm also switching to the lower strength pain medicine.

Barbara- I LOVE your pink streak. I've been threatening to dye mine pink for a year because the kids say, "No! You wouldn't!" I don't want all over pink, just some "highlighting" spots. Maybe the tips. My 11yo son says I should dye the tops black and pink tips but my skin tone isn't right for black. Right now I'm bright red so I'd have to figure out a base color that would look right for me and go with pink.

It was the poetry reading that inspired me to start this, Lala...so thanks!

My "new" can start today, too: I got my weekly delivery of organic goodies today (I LOVE Thursdays for that reason!) and there was some chard inside. It was beautiful, but I've never seen it up close, let alone cooked it. I'm happy to say it was a success. Last week the same thing happened with beets and I was amazed at how good they were. (Better than the chard...)

I did my pink streak over a year ago and had it taken out in April. I'm starting to miss it.

I know we aren't starting officially yet, but my new things lately were the dying my hair partially pink thing (over a month ago now) and going to a poetry reading for the first time last night.

I'm trying to challenge myself to not chicken out and hide at home instead of going out with friends or going to meetings and such.

Until today, my only experience with IM's was watching my grand daughter IM her friends non stop.

This morning I signed on and a SparkFriend IM'ed me. I panicked, "Now what do I do?" It was a long few seconds until I figured it out. I'm cool now.

My big challenge for the next few weeks is to lose the crutches, stitches, wires and surgical boot! Medium goal is to attempt some sort of exercise every day even with the bad foot. Today I played Wii Sprts for about 20 minutes.

Since we're about to enter a new season, is anyone up for a "new" challenge? The goal is to come up with something new to try each day.

It could be BIG: Sign up for a new class; buy a new workout ensemble; dye your hair purple.

It could be medium: A new walking route; try a different grocery store; increase your weights at the gym; dye your hair a shade darker.

It could be small: Try a new vegetable; eat with your left hand (or right!); put your hair in a pony tail.

Whatever you want! Just challenge yourself to mix it up. Then come back here and report your adventures! Let's officially start June 12 thru the 30th (then see if we want to continue), but feel free to post as soon as you have something to share!

(We can thank the Fab 40s team for this very fun idea. I just looked at their site and it's still going strong with one person commenting it was one of her favorite challenges. I hope we can have fun with it!)
