My guru, Paul McKenna says that alcoholics, to take an extreme example, are often exceedingly thin!!. I'm a beer drinker, in moderation most of the time, and I'm not giving it up! I just want to be fit for my weight.

I think half a glass is just fine.... and if you're interest is in just burning fat and not overall calories you may want to not drink.... but in reality, you're body is going to burn the alcohol first, then all your glycogen stores from all the food you ate the day before, and then, once that's all gone, you'll start burning fat.

I also think that as long as you have a calorie deficit you'll lose weight - otherwise why are there so many skinny French & Italians??? :)

I've heard about the liver/alcohol thing, but I thought it wasn't about fat burning, rather breakdown of the fat that we eat. If this is true, I think a good way to handle that would be to drink your wine on an empty stomach and wait until the affect has worn off before eating anything with fat in it. What do you think?

Yes! I loves me ma wine!

But get a load of this: have any of you read that alcohol interferes with fat-burning? Not just because it has calories, but because of how the liver prioritizes processing the alcohol over using fat, because it treats alcohol like a toxin to be dealt with first? So much for half a glass of wine after work, then hitting the trail!

I've been considering pacing myself on the wine intake just for this reason.

I'm with you! I don't know why we do this to ourselves.... Unfortunately I have been gaining even though I work out 6 days a week. Time to put the cookie and pizza away... the wine stays :)

Hear, hear to Electralyte's message! Two things I want to point out:

1. Would you definitely not have had the pizza and wine if you'd not exercised?
2. The inescapable fact is that you've added exercise to your life. You have already accomplished this and are doing yourself a good turn. Please celebrate this.

The thing that I share with you is this love of food and eating. I'm struggling to plan ahead delicious meals that also have the healthy elements embedded into them. Do you think it's the lack of planning that is the real challenge? It is for me! By no means should the guilt be about enjoying rich, tasty stuff. And I think exercise does ease the guilt. :-) But maybe it's not an exercise "excuse", but rather you haven't figured out how to get the healthy eating piece to match the exercise piece.

What do you think?

Went on a great hike yesterday. Totally enjoyed the hard exercise (steep trail) and the fall colors.

But as usual I used it as excuse to have wine & pizza after.

Now I may not gain from it since I used up so many calories, but over the summer of my hiking club I had many days such as this and didn't lose any weight. Didn't gain, but also didn't lose.

Why can't I just eat normal and lose? What's up with the excuses crap? emoticon
