Hello New Walking for Health Friends,

So I'm walking before work on days when I've been motivated to do so.. I live in the rainy climate of the Willamette Valley of Oregon and some mornings this is literally almost impossible (atleast if I were to drive to work first and then walk) as I would be soaked!

Anyhow, I've walked through our recent snow storm emoticon and I've walked to the grocery store, the post office and to the pharmacy. I've pretty much been a walking fool as of late.

emoticon Yes, Walking!!!

Jane (by the way I'm new to this team today)

Youíve got to stick with it. Change doesnít happen overnightónot meaningful, lasting change. Practice regularly, whether itís leg raises or gratitude exercises or positive affirmations. Make it part of your daily routine if possible.

You need patience (goes hand in hand with the persistence mentioned above). Itís seldom a straight shot to your goal. Youíll have setbacks and hit plateaus. But youíll also have breakthroughs and make great leaps forward. If you feel stuck, donít lose hope.

I walked for an hour on the beach today. I walked 1.5 miles in soft sand and on the water's edge. I'm not sure how to track it, so I just tracked miles and time. I know it's got to burn more calories on soft sand. Anyway, I'm just trying to get this going.

As some of you may have read, I broke my foot in Jan, and its taking forever to heal. Low vitamin d and probably a combination of age, have kept me from the walking track since.
Week before last I walked 3 days, for around 20 minutes each day.
Not really enough to get a good burn going. But it felt good to be back out there.
I am on day 5 of using the bone growth stimulator on my foot...the docs assure me this works about 91 percent of the time to help the bone callus grow back and heal the break.
I was told I would begin to feel a little pain maybe once the blood flow returned to the area and apparently it is cause last night I did have some pain.
All I can hope for is that with a high dose of vitamin d, and using the device will help my foot be healed by June when I go back to the doc.
I am going to limit my walking to 2 days a week for 20 minutes as the doctor said.
Unless I am having bad pain, then I guess its stretch bands, bike and weights for me.
But I so long to get back to walking again!!!!!
Good luck to all and keep walking.

OK - going out to walk this morning - have not really "gone for a walk" in about 10 days - my dog tweaked her back and was down for a bit, better now, and apparently I think I can't walk without a dog, LOL! I think we can go out this morning, maybe leisurely and short, but need to get back at it.

I am still walking! Was slowed for a couple of weeks by IT Band problems (illiotibial band tendonitis - !), but my doc sent me to a great physical therapist, and I am learning so much about the benefit and necessity of s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g. And feeling better quickly. I really encourage you to stretch before and after walking, if you are not doing it already - I was always in such a hurry to get out the door, and in such a hurry to pound out miles while in a specific heart rate zone, that I wasn't stretching hardly ever. And I learned, the hard way, that stretching is very important.

Walking and walking - I have been spending on an average 120 to 180 minutes out side walking around the bush and trails daily. I was having knee pain - blamed it on the walking -- but on Monday while swimming the life guard and I were talking while I was in the pool with flippers on. She informs me that using flippers causes her to have knee pain as the knee has all that extra force to move. So I took the fins off - and continued my swimming -
Results --- too soon to come to full conclusion -- but so far the knee pain is subsiding. I will continue to not use the flippers for a couple of weeks and see how the knees react. I have lost 22 pounds so that should be helping the pain to disappear not increase...

I walk the dogs. I make laps around the building at school. I walk up and down the hallways at client's houses while they are sleeping (I work hospice part time). I tie a stuffed toy to the string and run through the yard, letting it bounce around so the dogs chase me. The biggest change for me has been the pedometer's helping me with maintaining motivation. There is NO WAY I would have thought making laps around the building or up and down a hall could have added up to useful exercise by the end of the day. But the reality is that I have added a whole mile to days doing just that.

It is a very wet soggy - soggy day. I did go out with the dog for 45 minutes walk. Then I went to my mothers and took her cat to the vet - out for lunch afterwards then took her home. While in her complex I walked the tree hallways taking the stairs to the different levels before returning to the car. On the way home we stopped in to try to buy some mackerel at three different groceries stores. No luck. Also stopped in at two pharmacies to do a blood pressure check. All this has brought my pedometer to 8430 steps. So I will go out one more time in the pouring rain with the dog to get my 10,000 steps in.

I tell myself that there are 24 hrs. in a day and I'm worth 1 of them.

No longer do I rush the process; instead I embrace and enjoy it!

Have faith in God.

One thing I do is be so grateful and happy when I "have" to walk somewhere, e.g. the post office or something. I look at is a wonderful opportunity to increase my steps for the day - I didn't always look at it like that, LOL! Yes, def park far, that always helps.

One of the biggest breakthroughs for me was the morning I just got up, had a cup of coffee, then put on my rattiest clothes and shoes, didn't brush my teeth, and headed out the door with my dog - up until that morning, I seriously believed that it was IMPOSSIBLE to walk before work on a weekday - boy, have I changed that perception! I go out in the morning 3-5 times per week now, and my MINIMUM is 1.1 miles (i.e. more than one mile) a distance small enough, but big enough, that I never have an excuse to not go. This has been a huge change in behavior and thinking for me. Lovin' it!

Challenge - how do you make time or opportunities to walk?
Lets face it some of us are busy with jobs - small children - bad weather. There are many excuse we can give - but once again a reality check is needed - walking is good for us - we know that - this is why we are members of this Team. Am I not correct in this assumption?
So where do you walk?
Do you park at the far end of the parking lot?
Do you go out for a walk during a break at work?
Do you walk in the malls?
Do you get off public transportation to walk the final leg of your journey ?
What are you doing to get your 10,000 steps in per day ?
