This is week 15 of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. It is a cold, misty Easter where I am...more like November than April.

I have now completed 486.6 miles which brings me to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. This is an old industrial town surrounded by moors and canals.

I can't believe I have already reached Yorkshire. From my home in London it seems to be a long way "up there". I have been to Yorkshire several times. I love the area and, for some reason, always feel at home there.

This is week 14 of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. It feels like a lot longer because of the long, cold winter we have had.

Today the weather was glorious here and I have now completed 458.9 miles which brings me to Oakenclough on the Pennine Way. Everything seems easier when the weather is good. Roll on next week.

I am at goal and maintaining. Thanks to my friends on SparkPeople and in the real world who motivate me every day.

Hello, Chickadeechic, in my case I walk over 30 miles each week in my everyday life because I usually walk to and from work instead of driving or getting the bus. If I'm not at work I usually walk miles to the shops just for the exercise. I find walking very therapeutic.

Chickadeechic, You can walk anywhere. You just keep track of your miles and map them out on a map or globe where ever you want to have your virtual walk go. I am on a virtual walk to Maui with some women on another post. It is fun keeping track of miles. Mine are a combo of outside treadmill and my friend keeps track of miles on the eliptical also. Have fun.

At the end of week 13 on my long-distance virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats I have now walked 428.7 miles and reached Taddington in Derbyshire. This is quite a bleak area on a limestone plateau. Hopefully it is the nearest I will get to a weight-loss plateau!

Hi All!

I am new to this team and have just joined our local mall walking program. It is not very formal, but one lap around the grey tiles in the mall is equal to 1.4 km, so twice around is just over a mile. They also gave me a log book to log my distance and it has virtual walking tours in the book, province by province, so my plan is to walk across Canada!

I choose the mall walking option because a) it is climate controlled all year round, b) it is free, and c) it is on my way to work, so I can just leave early and get my laps in.

I plan to start with a 2 mile walk each morning, and progress to 5 miles.

Wish me luck!!

Maureen

Hello Inkydinkydoo, great name! I use Google maps to plot where my miles have taken me. I think you are even luckier in the USA as there are more virtual walking websites.

Have you seen the new feature that has been added to SparkPeople? If you click on "Healthy Lifestyle" then go to "Fitness" you can scroll down and find "Fitness Maps". This feature is useful for working out how many miles are in any route you normally walk. It is not so useful for working out a virtual walk. I will send you another message with some useful info about this.

For anyone who is following my walk from Land's End to John O'Groat, I have now completed 390.4 miles and have reached Colton in Staffordshire. Still enjoying it!

I love the idea of a virtual walk and would love to walk from Ohio to Disney's Beach Club Villas in Forida!

How do you track your miles, though? I know your pedometer tracks how many miles you've walked, but how do you know exactly where you are on your route?

Wow Mrs.D you are really making progress! I started a virtual walk last year and fizzled out. I am a little late getting to this team, but would love to try again. I am headed to Key West from Charlotte, NC. It is 887 miles.

Just completed week 11 of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. I have now walked 357 miles since 1/1/09 and have reached the quaint village of Claverley in Shropshire. The village is mainly known for its timbered cottages and All Saints Church which was built in the 11th century.

Since 1/1/09 I have gone down 2 dress sizes which makes walking much easier.

This is week 9 of my virtual long-distance walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. I have completed 281 miles and reached Haresfield Hill in Gloucestershire.

I like to read a little bit about the places I "visit". Today I read that the walk to Haresfield Hill has kissing gates and a permissive path. The mind boggles. I must add it to my list of places to visit in the real world!

This is week 8 of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. In the real world I have been on holiday from work this week because my daughter is on her school half-term break.

This is my first holiday since starting my virtual walk and I wondered how I would cope without my long walk to work every day. I needn't have worried. I found a reason to walk every day and covered an average of 8 miles per day. I was so pleased that I treated myself to a good pair of walking shoes in the sales.

My virtual walk has now turned northwards and I have reached the aptly named village of Cold Ashton in Gloucestershire. This village is on the Cotswold Way between Bath and Old Sodbury. More wonderful names!

Hello, I just found your team and this topic. Sound like a Great Idea. I love to travel so this is right up my alley. I will be walking to Whitefish, Montana, my favorite place inthe whole wide world(so far). I have a college friend wo lives there, and my family has visited several times. I love the mountains and the clean air. I usually walk for 30 minutes/day. But will probably increase it to get there sooner. Have not done the mileage yet. Will get back to you on that. emoticon

Brrrr! What a week that was! When most of the UK was several inches deep in snow, I still managed to walk nearly 28 miles. I don't own a treadmill, so all my walking is done on real pavements. The complete absence of public transport meant I had to walk through snow drifts to get to work on Monday and Tuesday. OK, I'm exaggerating, but only slightly. Thank goodness for my Dunlop wellies. The snow was above my ankles and they kept me bone dry and upright.

On my virtual walk, I've completed over 163 miles and have reached the village of Halberton in Devon. I love the quaint names in this part of the UK.

This is week 5 of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. So far, I have walked 135.3 miles and I have just passed the village of Spreyton in Devon.

In the Churchyard at Spreyton is the grave of Thomas Cobley. There is a children's nursery rhyme about "Uncle Tom Cobley and all" who set out to Widecombe Fair. The name Thomas Cobley is apparently very common in Devon. Researchers have decided that the rhyme was written about the person buried at Spreyton. Learning new things about my country has been an unexpected added bonus of my virtual walk.

The other good news is that I have already completed one tenth of my walk to John O'Groats.

Is anyone else doing a long distance walk...real or imaginary?

I love this idea of taking a virtual walk. In fact, that's what inspired me to join this team. I've always wanted to traverse the Appalachian trail so now I'm going to take a virtual hike. Who knows? I might just get to do a little bit for real as part of it is not too far away. If any one else is interested in 'hiking' part, or all of it, here's a link to a distance calculator:

http://www.ragtag.org/dbatdist.html

Mrs. Doyle, I see you hail from the UK. I'm a transplanted Brit. and I grew up in Malvern, Worcs. If your tour takes you near there let me know so I can 'visit' with you. The Kettle Sings on the Malvern Hills used to be a great place for tea. emoticon

This is the fourth week of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. The scenic route I am following is 1111 miles long. If I walk at least 22 miles each week, I should finish by Christmas 2009.

I started adding up my miles on 1/1/09. So far, I have walked 105.8 miles and I have just crossed over the River Tamar from Cornwall into Devon. Somewhere along the route this week, I passed the halfway point on my weightloss journey. That was a milestone to remember.

I started doing this a couple of weeks ago and it's cool to see other people doing it as well. I'm walking from Kansas to Denver, Colorado, and then from there I'm heading to Las Vegas. Not sure what'll come after that, but we'll see when the time gets here! :)

I have now completed 66.6 miles of my virtual walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. So, today, I am in Tregolls Farm which is apparently a very comfortable b&b. On the way, I shared a virtual coffee with Spark member Angiebop42 who is lucky enough to live in scenic Cornwall. I'd love to hear from other members along the route.

I'm thinking of "walking" to Walt Disney World. I would go by my son's house in Keller, Tx, then my daughter's in Houston, then on to WDW..would take 2 years at my current walking time/miles. OR I could fly back to Kauai and revisit the places we saw when there for my son's wedding. Have not decided as yet.

How fun! Are you going to find pictures on line and add them to your account? I wish you all the best on your journey.

Now that I am in the swing of things and successfully losing weight, I have decided to keep the momentum going by setting myself a challenge.

This year I am aiming to complete a VIRTUAL walk from Land's End to John O'Groats. The scenic route I am following is 1111 miles long. If I walk at least 22 miles each week, I should finish by Christmas 2009.

I started adding up my miles on 1/1/09 and will add a progress report every weekend. So far, I have walked 7.3 miles and I have reached Sancreed in Cornwall.

If my virtual walk takes me near your hometown, why not come out and cheer me on!

I will report my progress on my SparkPage every weekend. Wish me luck!
