Sure I can't walk to a far away place in reality for practical purposes but having that goal in mind to walk to has kept me motivated . So far , I've walked 67 miles . Grounded by a sprained ankle this week but can't wait to start walking again . Can't believe this is the same lazy me talking .

I couldn't figure out how to map on SP , so I'm using Mappedometer . You can mark out your route and it tells you the distance . You can see the pics of my route on my page .
I've even mapped a route around my house to know the exact distance , so I don't need to keep track each time I go out .

Starting my walk in Bags End and ending in Rivendal. Going to keep up with it on my web page.
Tried this before and gave up whenever I miss logging my miles I would quit. Not this time even if I go a whole year without logging.

This is a really cool idea...the virtual walk... and I want to be involved. I think I will try and track them on SP maps and just update the map each time. BUT is there a better way out there where I can actually see where I am going? I will walk tonite and think of a good place to walk to. I try to walk 2 miles at lunch 3 times a week as bonus to regular workouts so that is what I will track. I am not sure yet if I will track running and walking distances though. I have wasted so much mileage since last year that I just tracked in the fitness logs but did not add to a map.... I had better decide soon where to virtual walk to and start tracking.

Are google maps better than the spark maps? I guess that way I can get 3D of where I am going... is that what/how you guys are doing it?? emoticon

It is what I do from this minute on that decides the future and my progress. Concentrate on little steps forward and don't focus on the backward ones. Keep going forward and looking up! WE have been there, WE all can do this!

I'm doing the Transamerica walk! From Virginia to Oregon! I' ve got to step it up, I haven't made it out of Virginia...LOL!! It only lets me put in miles so it's hard for me to track all of my walking, so I only track when I go for one to three miles.

I'm also attempting a virtual walk of the AT, but I'm figuring that it'll take me more than a year! Especially since I'm getting a late start. EEEK! How am I going to do this in real life?! Prepping for the real thing.

I'm aiming to get in shape enough to be able to hike to Havasu Falls, AZ by the summer of 2015! I hope to become a certified personal trainer and/or a nutrition coach someday!

I have the Omron Go Smart Tri-Axis Pedometer and I love it. The Tri-Axis pedometers seem to be more accurate for me. I got mine from REI, but they may sell it (or others like it) elsewhere.

yes I'm doing that virtual walk and a virtual walk of the Appalachian Trail too. Since July 24, 2011 I have logged in 367.26 Miles.
I never can get a pedometer to work. Are there any brands that are better than others? I just need a good basic one so I can be counting my steps when I'm out and about, especially when I'm out of town. Thanks

Is your pedometer the type that you attach to your waistband? I learned that because of my excess belly weight the pedometer wasn't always straight vertically when I wore it on the front of my waistband and didn't pick up my steps very accurately. I started clipping it to the back of my waistband and it started working much better! I have since bought a new one that I can just slip into my pocket and I love it.

I love the idea of strapping the pedometer to your ankle. My husband wears his all the time, but they haven't worked for me. I'm going to give that a try.
Also, has anyone tried the virtual walk at exercise.lbl.gov? It goes across the trans-america trail and shows you a picture of where you are when you track your miles. Kind of fun.

Yes, you can!

My virtual walk is the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, GA to Baxter Peak-Katahdin, ME a total of 2181 miles.
I began walking July 24th, 2011. I'm at mile 160.94 today. Which puts me at less than 4 miles from Fontana Dam, NC.
The next milestone is lists is at 271.8 in Hot Springs, NC. I'll have to do some research on the trail. I know where a couple of the places on the trail are from visits to my brother's house in NE TN and our travels around NC & TN. So it'll be interesting to see where things are.
What a wonderful idea this is. Don't know how long it will take but it does make things much more interesting.

My journey will be from Houston, Tx to San Deigo, Ca. I am in Hou on a temporary basis for DH's job. I did travel nursing for 6 months in SD and LOVED IT, would go back in a heartbeat!
So my journey will be 1,470, I've knocked out 4.75 so far...

This sounds like great incentive! I hope you don't mind me stopping by....on my way to Brownsville, TX. Since I live in Kerrville and started this program in May, I might be there when it gets a little chilly here. I'll bask in the sun on the beach:) Total 346 miles

I walked 28 miles in May, 47 in June, 51.91 in July....so I have 219.09 miles to go!

Hello everybody, this sounds great :-)
Since I'm French (though living in China at the moment), I want to walk from my hometown, Lyon, to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. I've been thinking about it for years, and now I will do it... virtually. It's 1558kms. At 5k a day, 311 days... But I don't think I'll manage to walk every day!
Question from a beginner: those pedometers, do they track distance as well as steps? If not, how do you track your distance accurately when walking outside?
Thanks and best of luck to everybody ;-)

I started from langley bc last january 2010 for the olympics I am between Thunder Bay and sault st. marie ontairio. Have done 3,189,976 steps since then.

I am also starting a walk from langley bc to somewhere in NM goign south of course. I am lucky to have been going to WW last year when we started that first walk. This year still have friends that sent me the link to NM so have gone a fair distance south since the beginning of the year as well.

I want to finish the walk across canada and start the one to nm using the same steps... is this allowed on this virtual walk?

have a nice day

4.7 miles today (my legs are TIRED!). I'm in Graham, slightly off the beaten path but looking at some lovely large houses and woods. 2 - 3 more days and I'll be in Tacoma!

Remember what I said about Google being a little clunky? I found a website called Geobytes.com. According to it, the distance between Orlando, FL and Paris, France is 4,477 miles...or 7,205km if you prefer.

Another option is to map a northerly walk (to...say...Maine), use that website to get the distance from your jumping off point to wherever you want to land on the continent, and google the distance from there to Paris.

Like I said, clunky, but do-able.

Took everyone's advice to use Google map but apparently it can't map walking between Orlando, and Paris. I guess I can't walk on water (haha). Will have to try something else.

Ended up putting 5.1 miles behind me yesterday, which puts me still in Orting, but pretty close to out of town.

I'm on the corner of Buttes Drive & Orville Rd E. It's quite pretty and rural out here, if a bit rainy.

@AIMFOR - I used google maps. They have a "walking" feature that tells me where I'm going and where I'm at. It's clunky, but it works.

As for myself, between Friday and Saturday, I added 4.8 miles to my walk which puts me on the foothills Trail in Orting and 12.8 miles into my journey to Burning Man.

The trail's lovely, but there seems to be quite a few stores popping up around here.

This is awesome! Count me in!
I'll start off with a walk to Sudbury, Ontario (where my oldest son and ddil live). After that I'll 'walk' from there to Halifax, Nova Scotia (where my youngest son and ddil live).
Now I just need to go and figure out how to map it out...

I personally decide where it is I want to go and google my walking distance from my home to where I want to go. There is also a mapping program here on SP. Then I check things along the way depending on how far along I am in my journey and "see" all the things along the way. I have even ordered brochures for some of my virtual trips.

Currently 56.6 miles/4489.7 miles Spokane Wa to Glasgow, Scotland.

I have done this before and love the idea of virtual travel. I am going from Spokane WA to Glasgow Scotland - total of 4489.7 miles. Thus far I have racked up a total of 28.9 miles since 1/2/2011.

Marimom - I have found that due to be short waisted pedometers do not tend to track well - instead I clip my pedometer to a wrist sweat band I wear around my ankle. Counts all the steps without issues. I do not use a fance pedometer - but where I clip it means a lot. Hope this helps.

I'm in. I've tried this once before with somewhat limited success due to a lack of anyone "walking" with me. Hoping that watching all of you will help keep me motivated.

I think I'll head down to Burning Man first...595 miles according to Google Maps. I'll post later with my miles for the day.

I decided to do a virtual walk too. I'm walking to one of the prettiest areas of USA, the Appalachians in Virginia, just south of West Virginia and just East of Tennessee. There is a charming town I visited as a child, and I plan to make a trip there for real after I complete my virtual walk. I live in the center of Ohio, so this walk is about 400 miles. I started walking for exercise again last month;I'm counting those miles walked as part of this trek. Now I am in Marietta OH, about ready to cross over the Ohio River into West Virginia.

I am walking to Wimberly, Texas. It is near Austin. My brother-in-law and husband are celebrating their birthdays. Wimberly is around 300 so I have just complete my walk there and back and I am early because the party is not unitl Dec 4. So I have an early start for when we travel for Christmas. I have already hit the road.

I'd like to join in on the virtual long-distance walk.

My walk will be to my son's house, which is 723.59 miles from my house!

Haven't been on this site in quite a long time. But I like the virtual walk idea.

I have been on a virtual walk across canada starting in surrey bc goign to the east coast.

Instead of counting miles have been counting the steps.

I have a document where I keep track that my leader at WW sent me.... so far I have got to kenora manitoba. And am almost at my next stop

I started this in january. I was called our olympic 2010 challange.

I keep track of my steps. Am getting close to the half way mark of 3,000,000 steps.

have a good day

Bev
