Yes I add mine all the time to scanner I put in what package says and to make sure it's accurate the only way we can get the scanner up with everything is for everyone who uses it helps each other out by putting what your eating what not in scanning by adding it in I don't mind helping out a team mate by making it faster for us all
I do the best I can from now on my life is mine I want to be a healthy nana I can only control that I'm back And I'm doing the done girl and I am going to be a turbo fire hottie with the blazing blue team i am a positive thoghtful person who cares about others And my family sherry wilson

Absolutely love "Scan Barcode" button!!! Not only does it make adding my favorite food easier, it corrected my calories I was putting my creamer in @ 200 extra calories a serving. Woohoo, I'm below my calorie intake all along!!! Oh yes I can!!

I was hoping the scanner would make it easier to add foods not already in the food list. But it seems like only foods already listed in SP database are available via scanning. When I scan a new food, it says it is not available do I want to add it manually. Is everyone finding this to be true?
Thanks so much for your response - and for adding a smile to the start of my day and new year. I will probably choose to protect my time and my patootie and continue to add items to my daily tracker the old way, without the scanner.

Hmmm. I wouldn't count on it. The only option I can think of is to scan them all into today's nutrition tracker to add them. Once they've been saved, you should be able to go back and delete them from your nutrition tracker and still have them available for you for next time.
It would be a one time pain in the patootie....

Thanks so much for your help. One more question -- can you use the scanner to add the food to your favorites without adding it to your daily calorie count? I would like to scan several foods prior to eating them, so they will be available when I actually want to add them to a meal.

At the bottom of the app's opening page or on the Nutrition Tracker page, you'll see a button labeled 'Scan Bar Code'. Click it. Center the food's bar code within the scanning box that appeared when you selected 'Scan bar code'.
If the app can read the bar code, it will either display the related product (if it's already in the system, or it'll display the 'add a new food' (or whatever it's called!) data entry screen so you can create the bar code entry.
Of it cant read the bar code, it'll keep trying to Focus. At that point, frankly, i skip the bar code and use the old search method
Hope this helps!

I have the barcode scanner, but I think it is just going to take awhile to update all the barcodes. It definitely has made it easier though so far!

Hello everyone, I would like spark to make the food tracker easier to use. I have tried some from different apps and have found myfitnesspal to be the best for me. It starts out at the lower calorie range and then once you add your exercise it adds how much more calories you can eat that day. I've only been using it a couple of weeks and found that I had a defficiency weekly and actually lost weight. Although I gained 5 lbs last week while on vacation I have started to use it again this week. Sparks strong point is the motivational support, team challenges and actually every other single thing. The barcode scanner here has not been easy to use though.

Thanks! I'm glad to know they're at least listening to the numerous requests for a barcode scanner. It's frustrating to feel like a message is falling on deaf ears.

I was selected as one of the beta testers when Tom posted here a few months ago. There's only about 5 of us right now. They want to really limit it until they get the major bugs worked out. If you post In the beta thread under general discussion here, you may be selected when they increase the number of beta testers for wider testing.

A bar code scanner is part of the app being beta tested now.

I was also happy to FINALLY see an app update, but disappointed about no scanner. So I will continue to use Calorie Count's app.
Hey, at least SP fixed the bugs from the recent update.

I really love this app. A brocade scanner would make it that much better. You get my vote: Yes!

SparkPeople released an update yesterday to the app, so I quickly downloaded it thinking it would have a barcode scanner. WARNING -- DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE! It's completely messed up and buggy. And... NO barcode scanner. I understand SP is a free site so I can't expect all of our demands to be met, but I would gladly put up with advertising in the app to have a barcode scanner. Hopefully if enough people make enough noise on this message board, someone who works for SparkPeople will see our thread & will acknowledge our request and say "forget about it" or "we're seeing what we can do." That's all I really want at this point -- some sort of acknowledgement!

I would also like to see a barcode scanner! Myfitnesspal has it and it makes me want to switch to that application rather than SP. I was hoping that Spark would have it by now...

Maybe if we get enough replies to this thread, Spark will take notice. It's just frustrating that I've seen Spark reps respond to other threads, but yet, this one is completely ignored. I know we're getting the Spark product for free, but still, I'm sure there is advertising value in a large number of users, and I am one of those users!

I don't understand why the Android App has the ability to use a barcode scanner now but the iPhone app doesn't... it sure does make me want to switch over to MyFitnessPal...

Exactly! I love SP and have so much time invested in it that I don't want to change, but I've been trying out My Fitness Pal just because of the scanner...it's cool, convenient, easy and fun. Does SP ever read these forums and act on user feedback?

It's pretty dissapointing that SP has such a great website and a not so great app. I LOVE the MyFItnessPal app. Not only can you scan but it has a HUGE database. Most foods I scan are recognized. I recently started using Calorie Count's app simply because it gives you a letter grade for each food item as well as your food diary thus helping you make better food choices. The community support on Calori Count is pretty decent too.
SPARKPEOPLE, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE UPGRADE YOUR APP.

It really would come in handy. SP needs a suggestion page and then someone to read it... LOL

guess I'm ignorant... never thought of a bar code scanner.... I just enter foods from the nutrition label and they end up in my favorites and easy to find over and over....

I requested that spark use the barcode scanner it would be so much more easier than having to log all that time I spend the majority of my time logging my foods on sp I get tired of tracking it and for the most part you can't track what you eat cause not recognized if they really value our Input they need to go get this is one feature definitely be worth the add because when you only get a 30-1 hour lunch and your spending it logging your calories I don't find that but I would also like to have time to be on the message boards and talking about how my day is or what I might of should of done differently it all takes mental willpower to succeed and time to plan accordingly some days I don't get to plan ahead that's when I lose my focus so I think when I use the other trackers who I get the food bar code scanner it knows everything I'm sure it's a lot of work plugging in the info but it would be so much appreciated to me anything that will help it a little faster and easier might be the turning point to someone who it stresses out

I totally agree with the comparison to both of the sites. I love the Myfitnesspal iPhone app but really do not like the website. But, I love the Sparkpeople website but really hate the iPhone app. I wish they would do it (or explain why they wont/cant).

I take the lack of a reply as a no to my original question -- no reply from SparkPeople.
The concept behind the Spark lifestyle is great, but the online community leaves a lot to be desired.

I came to this SparkTeam page specifically to request a barcode scanner like MyFitnessPal, and now I see that this request has already been made many times before. My question is, has anyone ever received a reply from SparkPeople that they're working on this feature or have at least considered it? I prefer Spark's overall holistic approach to weight loss, but am contemplating abandoning Spark's tracker altogether in favor of MyFitnessPal, which is so much easier to use and a real time saver. I know I'm not alone, so I'd be surprised to find out that SparkPeople isn't responding to our requests.
