My son is nearly 3 months. I'm back to work FT, so I pump twice a day and he nurses probably about 11-12x when I'm home. Totally depends on the day. We've recently had some nights where he's went about 5 hours w/out nursing, but we have MANY (too many) nights where he's literally nursing every 20-40 minutes...Ugh. Hard on a working mom!

DD is 3 wk old tomorrow, and she nurses well over 10-12+ times a day. She's on-demand feeding, and I also let her comfort nurse for a "pacifier". I stay home with my kids and am able to put her in my Moby and let her nurse away!

If your baby is gaining enough weight, don't worry.

At 4 months, I seem to remember that Baby #1 fed 12X per day, and Baby #2 fed only 4X per day.
Now Baby #3 feeds 8X per day at 3 months.
Every baby is different!

(OMG! I just noticed the date on the OP!
Ha!
Well, if anybody is still reading...)

Mine is 2 years now and I would have to guess at how often he nurses in a day because it is very often and varies from day to day. I would say during the day at least 6 times, easily more, and during the night still at least every 2 hours usually.

My DD is 5mo, and over the past month has re-set her schedule for 5-6 feedings starting at 4am to 7pm, about every 3hours. I do a baby-led schedule, but I could set the clock by her, really consistent!

My son is 16 months and he nurses beween 5 and 10 times a day but most of them are a couple minutes or less. He has a full feed in the morning and usually another sometime in the middle of the day and then one before bed. He sometimes wakes at 3 to eat, sometimes not.
Everything else is comfort nursing, when he is sleepy or has banged his head or even if I've been running around doing errands and I come home and he wants to reconnect.
I'm allowing him to take the lead with weaning and so far, he isn't showing signs of stopping any time soon

Slow and steady wins the race.

My little boy wakes up every 2 hours on the dot. Except after having a few rough days of teething then he will sometimes sleep 4-5 hours at a time. He still wakes up 2 or 3 times a night. He is 4 months old. But i'd rather him be on his schedule because my breasts are on the same schedule...They let down every two hours and if he isn't awake I just pump...It feels SOO much better. He still nurses since my body can pretty much supply food for 3 infants...lol

Hello!

It's so good to see so many Breastfeeding Moms on here!! My LO is 4 months old and nurses every 1-2 hours and I am lucky . . . She only wakes to eat 2 times a night :) Since I work nights now Daddy feeds her a bottle of BM before bed and she is out by the time I get home :)

Andrew is 6.5 months...he nurses about 5-6 times during the day still and probably around 4-5 times at night....but that depends, sometimes I'm lucky and he only nurses 2-3 times. Granted, we do co-sleep, so he's right by the food source and he rarely (and I rarely) wake all the way up when feeds!!! He does have small amounts of solids on occassion, but we're still mostly breastfeeding! He's a big boy though...24lbs and 28inches long!!!!!

My 16 mo nurses 2-3 times a day lately. He eats solids so it just depends on the child and their age. He does nurse more while teething or sick but usually just twice a day.

My 12 month old nurses 5 times during the day and at night twice. She is a picky eater and the doctor tells me I need to cut back my feedings to increase her solids. I offer her solids first but she rather just nurse. I introduce solids and cereal at six months and she did not really like it till she was 8 months. Table foods are like sometimes but she just has a small appetite.

My first (of three) nursed infrequently and she ended up causing supply problems later. She wouldn't ask to eat and would sleep 8-9 hours at night without waking. It wasn't until this last one that I made the effort to wake her up at night and offer every three hours from day one. She's a nursing champ now, and will ask without me offering. She's the only one I haven't had to do any supplementing with (the others I was supplementing at 3 mons) , and she's 2 days shy of 3 months old.

Some babies don't know they are hungry until they are offered. (Kind of like when you and I get used to not eating breakfast, and then we aren't hungry for it after a few days/weeks) I don't believe in forcing, either, but if you make the effort to offer every 2-3 hours, more than likely they'll take it. Waking a baby up seems bad, but if they are sleeping on a regular basis with regular naps and the total sleep in a day is about 15 hours for newborn-4 months, waking them up isn't a bad thing.

I stopped having to wake up my third at night about a month ago...she wakes up every 3-5 hours on her own to eat.

my 7 month DD nurses 8-12x a day still and lots at night as comfort. We skipped all jars and cereals and waited til 6 months like they recommend now. ...and are doing BLW letting baby feed themselves table foods.

Like the other mamas said, every baby is different, and weight gain is the best measure for bf babies if they're getting enough.

My 9 month old still nurses 8 times a day, sometimes up to 10. He still gets up 1-3 times at night to nurse.

I didn't start cereal until 6 months because I read that was the new recommendation. I asked my doctor about it, and she said 4-6 months would be fine. She also said that age wasn't the only determining factor, but weight and being able to sit up supported were factors.

I think if your baby is happy and steadily gaining weight and seems satisfied, then she should be fine.

My little one is almost 9 months and it seems like she nurses a ton - I do not keep track but she still nurses at night and it not interested in baby food of any type. She will eat whatever we are eating though - as long as she can do it herself!

Yes, 8-12x a day is usually the norm but every baby is different.
The important question is whether she is gaining weight/growing or not. If she's gaining weight and looks healthy then she's fine. She happens to eat more at each feeding is my guess.

If she's NOT gaining, then she probably does need to nurse a little more and you could just offer her the breast an extra time each day.

ETA: If you have allergies in your family I would wait to introduce cereals/solids. Drs recommend babies start cereal way too early. All babies need is mama's milk for the first 6 mos and even longer in most cases.
Just an FYI.

My little one is 4 months old and she only feeds 5x a day. She even has pretty specific times she eats at but we did not put her on this schedule, she came to it herself. I only feed her when she is hungry. I refuse to force her to eat or wake her up to eat. I am pretty positive that if she wants to eat she will let me know. I AM currently starting her on cereal 2x a day per doctors recommendation and she is loving that but she still nurses only 5x a day. I have read many things that recommend 6 to 8x a day for her age but I just don't see my baby wanting to eat that much....what do you think? emoticon
