Today, I felt great so went for a walk, a five mile walk to Van Cortland park,it's about a mile from my home. Once I made it there I took the the scenic route, lol, I only forgot the annoying flies like that route too. I made it through the woods to get to the clearing. I then walked to the hill near the clearing and plopped my arse down for some sun tanning, I just stayed in the sun for twenty minutes,
then went to the shady tree's nearby for an hour.
After "feeling the burn" I went back to the woods,
(there is a trail there),I made it through without "to many bites"and started my trek home. My pedometer read 4.88 miles.
It's the first time I was able to walk for that kind of distance in years.
I'll find out how I did tomorrow when the aches and pains show up. Enjoy your day.

Hello from the Windy Oregon Coast!
I have been having a pity party all week and have decided I am fighting depression and need to talk to my dr. tomorrow. I want to sleep days and am up nights.......not good for a day person. I am allowed to sit for an hour now but then have to get up and walk about 6 blocks before I can come back and sit down. My husband is great to put the leash on the dogs and to tell them "we" are taking Mom for a walk. Praises he is not letting me flounder.

I had Restless Leg Syndrome and the Rx for that is out of reach, so my Internist put me on 1200 mg. of magnesium a day and 400 mg of potassium. It works and I have no more charley horses or restless leg syndrome. Super cheap and they work!!

Today he practically dragged me to the car and we went for a 3 hour drive.......amazing what some fresh air and sunshine will do for me. I hope each of you have someone to get you moving forward.

I wish I could walk for thirty minutes,my legs cramp up so much, I can't move. I've been "working" on the legs since my pain has diminished so much,I'll
just continue doing the "Tapping Solution" and get control of my legs.

Good News from the Oregon Coast!
I saw my spine surgeon yesterday and I can now wean myself from the back brace, sit in my recliner and put my feet up and sleep on my side. Those all sound so normal and they are but not when you have back surgery and your dr. makes them a NO NO. My mental state has totally turned around and I feel great! I am walking as much as I can and wear the brace for walks and shopping. 6 weeks seemed like a million years but it has passed and so many prayers were answered.

Did you ask your doctor about getting on your eliptical? I would. I was scared to walk with a walker and then freaked out when they took that away from me and gave me a cane. Rehab saved my life and that was a hard 3 weeks, but paid off big time.

I just got home from having my L4 fused to L5 with a cage in there to protect my spine. I went 18 months in agony and no one offered me any help and said it was arthritis at my age of 68. I refused to accept that and found a pain doctor that gave me Epidural Shots in my spine that got rid of the pain for months at a time. Suddenly they quit working and I went to a Spine Dr. that two of my friends had gone to and he showed me my MRI that showed my spine was totally pinched. No wonder I was losing the use of my left hip and leg! He did surgery May 17th and then on day 4 I moved to a Rehab Place. They put me through their paces for three weeks and then sent me home. Whee......home sweet home. The only trouble with home was I had to train my husband to kick me outside to walk every 30 minutes. I have no pain and am not on any pain meds. I can take off my back brace when I go to bed and it comes right back on when I get up. I just got tired of all the pain and misery and went hunting for help. I wish all of you good luck in finding help. If you don't get an answer you can accept, try another doctor.

That quickly stopped(no using my cane)when my sciatica moved in. I treated my sciatica,at first, heat which only made it worse,so I went onto using ice.
It worked perfectly. I no longer have sciatic pain, I'll still use the cane until I'm onehundred percent sure it's gone. I'll resume walking after I rest it for two days or more. John New York

So far, for the past three days I've been able to walk without the assistance of a cane. Don't get me wrong,I still bring it along to my walks. It's a fold down cane. I bought it years ago. I taped up with camoflage tape and people look at it thinking it's an exotic wood from Africa, lol. Nope it's just Camo tape. John New York

Since going to physical therapy and a "workout plan" at home.
I feel my abs have tightened up my body, my muscles seemed to have "re-appeared,lol" my quads and thighs have grown and have shrunk on the upper thighs, which I like too.
I seem not to be loosing the weight, just turning it into muscle, which I don't mind.

Today, Thursday, I went to a vigorous physical therapy session. It was a beautiful workout. I felt great.
Until I got home, my sciatica came back but I didn't let it get me down. I just stretched backwards and the sciatica was gone. I've got to call the anesthesiologist to get a second shot of epidural. I can't wait.

Hurray... my back permitted me to do some strength exercises today! It feels like it's been forever. Even though I didn't do much or many (mostly arms), it feels good to have done something.

I just got on my Gazelle for the first time in months (it was packed up during house renovations, and I just got it out). When I bought it in January of 2008, I could barely walk after working out on it for 15 minutes. Today, even with added ankle weights, an hour on the thing left me with only a little muscle fatigue! I AM making progress.

Good evening,
I will make a phone call in early to mid January to get the shots to my left lumbar. And, after another month, I'll get my neck done.

I've come to believe, I hope, that the epidural shot(s) to my right lower lumbar will continue to kill that pain.
My next set of shots will be to my lower left lumbar to squash the pain from stenosis.
I think I should have gone there first, lol, live and learn.

TrishP- I am almost 25 years past my back surgery, so I'm not as fragile as a lot of people are on this board--as you probably are. I think that your best bet is to go to the PT and the doctor and get OKs for exercises and plans for exercising along the way.

Because just when you think you have it licked (as I did when I was so confidently writing below), pain will return. Possibly in another place, or with a different "flavor" to it.

So I have an appointment with my doctor next week to discuss the hip pain I've been having the last few weeks. I'm hoping to have him send me to a PT or a physiatrist that can help me figure out what the best exercise plan is for a 40-something woman with rods, curves, herniations, and fusions all over.

I'm not hurting a lot. It's just that it's a new place for me to be in pain, and that worries me that I'm doing something wrong.

So that wasn't much of a victory message. Sorry.

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving,
I've been better, but my physical therapy session went well.
Today, nothing hurts, I'd call that a small miracle or could it be the hard work at Physical Therapy?
Maybe both,lol.

Did you have a PT suggest what to do next? Or did you just try one new thing and see how you did? I am scared to try new things until a doctor tells me it will probably be okay.

For me, it was a combination. I used exercises I learned in PT years ago and then, by trial and error, started working my way up to where I am.

I think it's really important to consult with someone who knows about exercise physiology. If you're coming off a recent surgery, be extremely careful. The biggest problem I've found is that very little hurts when I'm actually doing it, but I can want to die the next day. So I found that I am best off when I only add one new exercise at a time (so I can identify what it is that hurts) and only a few reps each time, too.

You should be proud! Did you have a PT or Doctor help figure out what exercises you could do? Or was it more just trial and error? I have an appt at the club on Wednesday to see what exercises are safe to start with. I am wondering if that is a waste of time...if I am better off just trying it out myself and letting pain be my guide...What do you guys think?

Mine is a scale victory. I've been plateaued for a month or so, and finally broke through it to hit the point where I have lost 10% of my body weight and have moved from a BMI that puts me in the "overweight" range rather than the "obese" range.

It's taken since January to lose this weight, and it's taken a lot of that time to figure out what exercises are possible with this weird back of mine. But it's happening, and it's going to keep happening. I hope that by this time next year, I will be at goal.

Good morning,
The only electric shocks I got today was in my left thigh, only the left thigh. That's a huge difference from "normal". I usually have neuropathies all over the place(me), both arms, both legs, upper, middle, and lower thoracic, the same with lumbar and cervical spines. And now, even the leg shocks are gone.
I think I could sleep now, besides, I've been writing 'cross-eyed for the last three and a half hours. John/Joco50

I Finally got 8 hours of sleep last night. I've been battling insomnia for the last three months,on and off. It usually hits me when I feel in pain during the evening hours. That pain just wont "let up" ,no matter what kind of 'break through' medication I use. I still get it.
The bad part about it, I can't use the computer without going cross-eyed,and sleepy. But, I can't sleep, just tired . Enough of that, perhaps I'll be starting a trend?,maybe I'll get eight more tonight.
I hope so.

This is so true. I would always complain about what I can't do anymore and then one day I just decided to be grateful I am not worse. I am thankful for waking in the morning and for the ability to walk unassisted. Positive thinking can be so helpful.

Focusing on what you CAN do rather than what you CAN'T is one strategy for dealing with chronic pain. What were you able to do today that is hard for you? Were you pain-free for five minutes? Able to get out of bed for a bit? Share those victories with us!
