LOL, I can definitely tell you that some of the stuff that goes on at the small country school my son attended for a short time is way crazier than the larger city schools. My daughter's kindergarten year they had 7 bomb threats and 3 anthrax hoaxes in the first 2 months of school. K-12 is in one long building so one bored HS kid clears the building for everyone including the kindergarteners. They also have much higher teen pregnancy rate than the urban schools.

Wow Kai I am amazed. I had heard that there were people who didn't know about 4-H and FFA but your the first I've ever met....lol.... emoticon
And Lisa I don't know what your 4h and rodeo groups were like but I wouldn't call my high school life boring. us ffa kids probably got in more trouble then the "bad" kids, we were just sneekier about it. I did a lot of dumb stuff in hs, but man, some good memories.

Wow! I'm floored. I mean, I expect that 4H rules the lives of children around here because, well, we live in the sticks but even my friend who lived in NYC all her life had heard of 4H. Just kidding. I'd heard of growing up, but it was something that only "country kids" did. Only now, my kids are country kids.

If you all have a county or state fair in your state you can thank 4H. www.four-h.purdue.edu/

It's Future Business Leaders of America. I wasn't involved in it so I don't know what it's about other than what is apparent from the name. I just did the usual ballet, gymnastics, and swimming lesson. I was a girl scout but mostly we hung out and sold cookies (actually my mom sold them for me at work) so we could go to summer camp on the cheap. We didn't do a lot of the badge thingies. My mom said they had something called the Rainbows when she was growing up.
There are county fairs but they are all pretty far away. The one for my parents' county is maybe 40 minutes away. Not like here where it was right in downtown Phoenix.

FFA as in club wise, yes.. FFA is through school.. 4-H isn't. FFA is for older where as 4-H is for young and the older. they both are what county fairs are made up of.. have you been to one of those? All those things that are shown.. accept for open classes where anyone can inner, are 4-H or FFA!
They are both clubs that you learn as a whole and then branch off and learn a project.
FFA is basically only the farming end.. animals, crops, vet science, small and large engines, ect.. 4-H is VERY wide.. community service, leadership, animals, cooking, sewing, photography, rockets, gardening, the list is never ending. (that is where I won both of my trips to D.C. through a pilot project to help 3rd world countries)

Portsmouth, NH. It's a city, but I wouldn't call it big. I think there is probably a farm with half an hour. I guess it has isn't own suburbs but I would think it's kind of like one itself.
No 4H though. What is is? Is that like the FFA thing?

Good job on quitting! I quit while I was still in highschool because it occured to me that it was a pretty dumbass move for someone with asthma to smoke. LOL SEE! I was on the path to healthy thinking back then. It's just taking me a while to get here.

I worked at Arby's in highschool. I ate for free while I was working and got 50% off the rest of the time. Thankfully I had a fast metabolism, because I lived on Arby's for the 3 years I worked there.

While we're confessing...When I was in high school I would save my lunch money to spend on cigarettes then come home and eat an entire bag of Cooler Ranch Doritos or Tostitos chips w/ salsa. Then after high school I ate 2 meals a day @ McDonald's I had friends who worked there so it was free.
I don't know how I wasn't 300 lbs.

Ugh, I seriously do not remember 19 at all. It's the year I was so sick with crohn's. Don't ask me what happened in 1986 because I cannot tell you at all. I do know that I was very skinny but totally unhealty. 86 pounds at 5'6". Not a weight to be. I'd rather be fat than go back there again.

Yeah, I definitely had some bad / scary / gross habits. I first moved out when I was 19. My roomie and I wanted to lose weight, so we literally consumed nothing except microwave popcorn, instant hot chocolate, coffee, and cigarettes. I thought I was "healthy" back then because I was thin.

I grew up on spagetti-os. and (hanging head) i still love them but haven't eaten them out of the can in years. When I was a teenager mom came across a similar recipe to yours and since i never did like the meat balls in them i loved the home made. i would make them more but DH isn't a real big fan of it.

DH grew up on it too. We never did, although, ironically my mom buys it now. Eww! My younger daughter was gone and my older daughter had been campaigning to make a box of stuff that Nana sent home so I let her make it. Yuck! It tasted like salt and chemicals. She was the only one who ate it. The goats got the rest. My husband just kept saying, "we ate this 2 or 3 times a week when I was a kid. How did I eat this stuff?"

It's so easy to make the same kinds of things too from scratch. Once you master how to make a bechemel you can do any of those things in the time it takes to cook the meat or pasta and you actually KNOW what's in it.

We're having "mock-sagne" tonight because I'm too lazy to boil noodles. LOL I just cook whole wheat rotini, make tomato sauce from canned tomatoes, onion, peppers, olives, capers and spices and stir that and some ricotta into the pasta. Done! If I get fancy I could throw in some mushrooms or pour it into a casserole and put some mozzarella over the top and run it under the broiler. I seriously doubt I'll even do that. Still, it will be 10,000,000 times better than Hamburger Helper and quicker.

Spaghettios are REVOLTING and I don't even want to contemplate the "meatballs." Eww! I grew up on them, of course but got out of the habit when my daughter got diagnosed with food allergies because they're full of corn. Now the thought gags me. Same with hamburger helper and all of those things.

I thought the meatballs had an odd texture. I love Spaghettios. I think I am going to try the recipe. My only concern is that seems like a lot of sugar added. I have fun pasta shapes already.

Thanks mama

Did you know that Spaghettios with Meatballs contain NO meat? The only thing that would stop a vegetarian from eating those things (besides chemicals, if you’re not into those), would be the ‘beef flavoring’. I used to love me a can of Spaghettios with Meatballs but, y’know—ew. I feel betrayed.

This recipe was inspired by the original ingredient list, taken word for word, minus the scary bits, then translated into healthier versions. I was going for that sauce that tastes nothing like the usual spaghetti with tomato sauce, but instead sweeter, smoother, and more like the 1980’s. There are no "meatballs" in here, for simplicity’s sake, but I will suggest that, if you own a copy, the meatball recipe from the Veganomicon would be perfect. Just make them small.

Nutritional yeast, if you choose to use it, can be found in your local health food store. It is B-12-filled alternative to cheese. Also try it with fresh lemon juice and sea salt on your steamed broccoli.

Note: The pasta type is left up to you, but none of this works without an appropriately spagettio-esque shape. For this reason, I had to use refined flour pasta (something called Ditalini that is vaguely ‘O’-shaped)…and will continue to do so until the world evolves to the point where whole grain pastas dominate the market-place and come in every imaginable style and shape.

Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Cooking Time: 15 Minutes
Yield: About 4 Servings
Ingredients:
½ Lb. Small Pasta (see note)
6 oz. Tomato Paste
1 Cup Vegetable Stock
1 Tsp Onion Powder
1 Tsp Garlic Powder
2-1/2 Tbsp Agave Nectar or Honey
¼ Cup Nutritional Yeast (optional)

Directions:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Drop in pasta and cook until soft, then drain and set aside. In a saucepan, combine tomato paste, vegetable stock, onion powder, garlic powder, and sweetener. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat and, stirring occasionally, cook for about 5 minutes or until heated through and well-combined. Stir in nutritional yeast, if desired, then combine with cooked pasta in a large bowl. Stir well to combine. Serve.
