One of the questions that the therapist asked is how the inline skate people getting in shape or getting ready for their sport. I started to tell her about skating activity when I realized that I was telling her why it's not practical to skate in the hot weather of Texas. That's when I said that I used jumping rope to get the cardio ready. Does it work? I said definitely because I put on the skates after I injured myself and I could easily tell the differences after 6 weeks of jumping rope. So that's how I got in shape. I didn't need to skate, I just need to jump and it works. Normally I would run out of gas after 10 minutes. Well, not time. I felt that I wasn't running out of gas when I normally would. And that was a surprise.

I have no idea what the therapy session would be like. This was the first visit where she took an assessment. I think the therapy will be some physical activities to promote healing of the achilles and of course, there will be an ultrasound treatment.

Today, did 3 sets of 80s in 3 minutes before I proceed with Spartacus Workout. Gosh, this new rope is heavier than I used to but the handles are great!

Just a hint for July's Challenge: It will be weekly challenges with different jumping styles!

That's sounds very details (therapy), I don't think we here are fortunate to have something similar. If I'm not mistaken, any kind of therapy, especially after terrible accidents that cause major damages, are very limited or nearly non-existent. Anyhow, I'm glad you went to the therapy, I think you can make it to the skate marathon :D And that ultrasound sounds like heaven!

So, does every session is the same thing activities? What will happen after the 4 weeks therapy? Do they do another checkup or maybe a different treatment?

Planned to do my jumping rope on Monday but after my 1st Pilate class and having to breathed in the rubbery smell from my map, I felt so dizzy, maybe should get a different mat, haha

After one month of inactivity to rest and two months of self treatment, today is the first visit to the physical therapist. She measured the range of motion and find that my left foot (the injured side) has very limited range of motion when pulling toward the body. This indicates very tight calf (soleus and gastroc). I know that my hams are tight, so this is a no surprise to me. She asked if I stretch before I did my jumping rope. I said everybody tells me to do it including Fathin, but I just ignored it because I expect my body to perform on demand. lol

So she showed me the stretch that you do with the yoga strap while sitting down. This is nothing new to me or anyone for that matter. You can find the info on how to stretch the calf muscle every where. Be it the runner stretch against the wall or the use of yoga strap or towel.

She did a bunch of strength of the foot tests which I did well and also the abs because that's what the cause of problem for many people. No problem there either. Then the balance on one foot test, which I could stand like that all day long. No problem there either.

Toward the end, I looked at the ultrasound machine and asked her if I would get the ultrasound. She said not this time, but the next visit. I sat there in silence. Then she changed her mind and said that since we've finished early, she could do it. When she put that wand on my achilles, I was in ultrasound heaven. It felt SO wonderful. I found the reason I went there in the first place. Unlike the home machine which doesn't have enough power and you don't feel a damn thing, you felt the warmth of this machine. If stealing was legal, I would steal this machine in a heartbeat. Heck, it would be better if I could buy one. But alas, no such luck.

I also learned that you could ice this thing even if it's months ago. As long as there is tenderness, I could ice it. You see, I thought icing is only good for the first few days. The same with massaging. It felt like I was doing a good thing when I massaging it, but I didn't know for sure. So I was afraid of injuring it. She explained that it helps muscle fiber aligning and healing.

As a life long anti all these physical therapy thing, I'm giving them the business. The prescription calls for 2-3 times a week for 4 weeks. I'm giving them the max allowed even though I already knew a lot of this information. I was still missing bits and pieces and they're putting it altogether for me. And of course, the ultrasound machine does wonder for me too.

So I will give them my full cooperation and I will start stretching my tight muscle such as the hams and calves.

I hope those yoga sessions and the treatment will help you to heal, be healthy enough for the skate marathon. And try to relax and not rushing through the process :D I can't wait for you to start again jumping rope, last time I kinda get motivated and challenged with your progress.

Now, after a week of no jumping rope, today, bought a new one and restart my jumping routine. The rope is heavier than the one that snapped but the handles are much easier for to grip, perhaps it's true that the handles are ergonomic, hehe. Actually, I had a lighter rope (the one that just snap, don't think I can glue back, haha) and more heavier (the rope just somehow slid out from its handle!). As today was just testing the new rope, I started with 50 then adjusting the length and proceed with 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 and ended with 80 (Week 14 June 26 to July 2 is 80s per set). So, total jumps today was 455s in 12 minutes. The pace was a bit slower than I used to, haha.

Wish everyone continue spark your day with jumping!

You're correct Fathinsn, it's nice to have the doctor took interest in my goal and want to help me reach it. My home treatment would have worked had I have a stronger ultrasound unit. But because it's a medical device, the manufacturers are limited by what they can produce for the home market. I notice that the side (facing center) that I used the ultrasound on is mostly normal where as the other side that didn't get much treatment is tender. One thing that I concluded on is that I only need to be healthy by the skate date. And that takes a lot of pressure off on how fast I have to heal.

For preparation, all I need to do is yoga an hour at a time about 5 times a week, with some 2 hour sessions in Aug. I'm definitely encouraged by the visit to the doctor that I will heal up in time since I don't need to worry about training for the cardio portion. If I can do yoga for 2 hrs, I can skate for 2 hrs. That's all I need. Then after the event, I can start jumping rope again. This time, I'll start with 500 and take my time to the max of 1000 within a year. I've learned my lesson.

Well I already jump at least 20 minutes a day on a trampoline for work, my goal for the rest of this month is to start my day off with jumping rope for 10 minutes. I think that definitely sounds like a great way to get out of bed and get the ball rolling on my morning workouts!

Happy Thursday everyone! How's your jumping? With rope or without? Jumping jacks? On trampoline? Cross-training strength with jumping?

SKATER787, I think there are two good news - you don't have a chronic, too serious case and the doctor wants to help you to prepare for your skating marathon! I think we need to learn how to listen to the body, try to differ between real pain or complain not wanting to do more.

OK, today I got to the doctor to have a look at my achilles problem as it's still tender on the left side. The diagnosis is achilles tendonitis and he's sending me to get physical therapy and ultrasound treatment. So I was on the right track with my home ultra sound treatment. The problem was I used it for several days and got lazy and quitted. I have to start my home treatment again. The doctor was impressed with my inline skating marathon goal and wanted to get me ready for it. The good news is that x-ray shows no calcium deposit as in chronic achilles tendonitis. And there is no achilles tear or rupture. It's just that people don't treat achilles tendonitis and they tend to develop chronic condition. So it was a good thing that I stopped jumping and putting any demands on the achilles after the injury. He wasn't sure that I'd be healed up in time for the Sep event, because of the time I need for training. He was thinking about the running marathon. I assured him that if I'm healthy by Sep, that's all I need. I just need to show up healthy at the starting line. Skating two hours is no problem for me. With that info, he thinks that I should be able to heal up in time. So it's 4 weeks of PT and I'll go in for another check up.

The only negative thing in the visit was that I wasn't assertive enough when I asked the x-ray nurse about the full body shield. She only gave me a small shield and said that's good enough. I asked the doctor about it afterward and he said that modern x-ray is not scattering the beam as much and that the small shield should be fine since I'm not going to have children. Still, the full body shield was right there. I should have just moved my foot off the x-ray table and inform the nurse that I want the full body shield or we'll do no x-ray today. The suit is right there and not doing anything and it doesn't cost anything to put it on. If that is what I want that is what I should get, not what the nurse thinks.

Last but not least, "Let the pain be your guide," said the doctor. IOW, don't do anything that will cause pain or make it worse. So my laying off working out was the right thing to do. Rushing the healing process of the achilles and you're asking for a chronic condition, calcium deposit and eventually a surgery. Not a good thing. So let the pain be your guide.

Well done for your effort, Tessa, especially as it was raining. Hope you didn't really jump in the rain!

Today, did jumping jacks 365x in 12 minutes, a good progress compare to last Monday's 285x in 10 minutes, hehe. Can't wait to find jumping rope next Monday, my fitness equipment shopping day, yeah!

Ok, tried to jump rope today. It was not a good day to jump rope. I have to jump outside and it was raining. So, I only got to jump 25. It's a small effort, but a effort.

Congrats, DanniAnne, yay! Keep track your jumping in our team's jumping goal :D

Today, Sunday, did jumping jacks as alternative to my jumping rope until I get a replacement for my rope. What I did, 3 sets of 15s, 3 sets of 20s, 1 set of 25s, 3 sets of 20s then 3 sets of 15s, sort of a pyramid, hehe. Total jump = 235x

Hi DANNIANNE, try to add 5 jumps per week, make it more interesting as you have a goal to achieve. I think 60 jumps per day, 4x weekly is a good start for a beginner, have fun with jumping rope and keep track your jumping in the team's goal!

Sorry, haven't gotten to jump lately. I started a CNA Class. Hopefully I will be getting a job at the Hospital as a Certified Nurse's Assistant. Then things will get back to normal, or close to normal. This is my first night free since starting the class. Hope to be posting my jumps after the 20th of this month.

Well done, everyone! I know that you guys can do it, don't forget to track your jumps in our team's goal emoticon

Today, Wednesday, I jumped 5 sets of 65s in 5 minutes after 5 min on elliptical. My old jumping rope is so heavy that everytime I jump with it, I feel like I'm doing jumping with dumbbells, haha. I miss my broken, lighter jumping rope.

June 2nd, total jumps (morning + late afternoon) = 26 sets of 60 spins, yay! But when I jumped in the late afternoon, my rope snap broke so had to use my old rope with the bulky handles. Looks like another shopping trip, this time at fitness store, yay!

Hello everyone. My goal this month is to jump at least three times a week. I'm starting small, then I will add more.

I know that at times I will be troubled,
I know that at times I will be belabored,
I know that at times I will be disquieted,
But I believe that I will not be overcome.
Amen.

It's June, the middle of the 2011! How's your year so far? Wishing all of you have a great time, with the ups and dowsn, accomplishments and plateaus. And for more great things in the second half!

For this month challenge, June 2011, post your jumping goals here (with or without the rope, how many minutes, how many jumps, etc) and support each other here or through our SPPage.

My goal for this month, still continue with my progression towards 100 spins per set (currently is 60 spins per set) and start to do morning jumping rope, rev up my cardio! Plan to do running in September as that will be the time when I can find a good sport store and find a nice running shoes (mine is rotting down, haha).
