Yes, it's true, when I jump faster, I do get more in short time. Actually, that was when I reach my 800x and game to continue if I had more time at that day. Now, I'm more to endurance, trying to jump longer instead of reaching big number. But I think to burn more, do more in short time is more effective as last time when I just do fast jump, I manage to maintain my weight. I think I'll do endurance one day and big number on other day.

By the way, still having problem with my curly jumping rope (cause: months of curled around the handle during my 2-month leave and another 1 month when I forgot where I put it and search all over place till I found it in my car), I had to extend the rope instead of my normal length so that I willn't trip - it really hurt my pride when it does!

Fathin, high number of jumps may have to do with skill more than endurance. Sure, your endurance is higher but I think skill plays a bigger role. I noticed that if I jump faster, I reached my target sooner and have better chance of success. If I jump slow thinking that it's a way of conserving my energy and myself, it seems to take forever. I'm better off jumping fast and get it over with. As your skill and mechanic is better, you use less energy per jump and you get done faster. That's why I believe the poster in my previous post because she said that her pace is about 1K per 15 minutes. That is a good pace and so she could do 2K on a daily basis in half an hour. If it takes longer than that then I doubt very much if people can keep up the routine. So working backward, I believe that it's the number of jumps you can do in a half an hour, is what you can do on a daily basis. So if Dec2711 can do 1K in 15 minutes, then she has a chance of doing 2K daily. Your rope skill has to be very good at that level.

That's so impressive, 2K jumps! The most I can do is 800 per day and I usually have to start over again after the 3 heavy-flow-red-flag days. Good thing about jumping rope, you can do anywhere as long as the ceiling is high enough (no dangling chandelier, haha) and the space is wide enough (no human or pets around, of course!)

Dec2711, let us know how you make out. Not many people can do 2K jumps a day, but I found someone on Yahoo Answer that does it. 1K jump is already good as I read that they use it for part of a black belt test in Tae Kwon Do. Here is a post from Yahoo Answer:

la gitanita

At the average speed i.e 15 mins for 1000 jumps, it would burn about 150 calories for someone who weighs 120lbs. Adjust to your bodyweight.

I jump 2000 nightly (30 mins)and i feel that is a good number. Build up slowly or you will get shin splints.

OK, since I started jumping on the 18th, I missed one day last Thurs. So for the month, I had 10 sessions of 1K each for a total of 10K skips. It takes about 20 minutes. So I'm in and out of the gym in half an hour which is a good thing because the longer it takes, the more chance of making excuses of not going. In and out quickly means I don't have any excuse not to go.

I myself still in recovery so not much jumping but I hope you guys continue your great performance! Goodies will be given today to those post your updates here (and at same time, encourage/inspire/challenge others) emoticon

SKATER787 - sorry to hear about your rope, I myself no longer trust my own counter jump rope, even though it doesn't talk to me. It always skip few jumps that I wonder did I really jump at all, haha. Anyhow, I'm glad you found the alternative (or back to your old friend) and continue jumping emoticon

Welcome back Fathin our group leader.

Talking Rope Update:

The prior week was when I used the talking rope for the 2nd time. After jumping for a bit, I hit the play button and found that I was in the 200's. Is that all? I was getting tired already. It's suppposed to be easier not harder. I thought I was getting in shape. It was a struggle all the way. By the time, I reached 700's I was getting desperate and started to manually count for the next X number of jumps. That's when I found that the rope was under-counting. But I still wasn't convinced. So I started doing a comparison. I would jump 40, it would could 30. That's when I knew for sure that it was off by a lot. I finally got to 900 on the rope counter, knowing that it was off by a lot and finished the last 100 my own count to reach 1K. I got a chance to examine the Talking Rope at home and found that the rotating mechanism where it makes the count, is defective. It should spin freely not stuck and difficult to rotate. I will have to send it back to Amazon for a refund as I don't think that this is the way to go. It's the end of the Talking Rope for me.

Since then I switched back to my speed rope and manual counting method. I wrote down number 1 to 20 for the number of sets and do 50 for each set. For each set, I would pause to mark it off. The count is accurate and I get to rest between sets.

Yesterday, just 1 minute of 60 jumps with jumping rope. Today, tried HIIT workout (as suggested in SP), 5 min of jumping rope as warm up and the rest 15 minutes on elliptical (10 minutes of 2 sets - 1 min High, 4 min recovery - and 5 minutes cool down). It was a hard struggle for me but I managed to do them, yay!

Team, you're doing great with jumping and non-jumping workouts! emoticon

Alright, I had to work nights and had no time to go the gym. After awhile, you get used to not going. But I decided to go at the last minute. I did a thousand jumps but it was a struggle from 700's on. I need to hang the rope up so it doesn't get kinked up when I use it. With the counter it's like running by the distance, you can't cheat. Using the timer alone, you can eat up the time resting. I would like to do more than a thousand, but was happy to get it over it.

that sounds great, 1K jumps in a session then you danced, AWESOME!
I'm still having a bit problem with my a bit "curly" rope - a result of spinning the rope around the handles, haha.

OK, the voice of the talking rope didn't bother me as much as I thought. When you're exhausted and fighting for your breath, you don't care. You just want to know how many jumps you've done and whether you've reached your goal. You just want to get over with.

With the music on, you couldn't hear the talking rope anyway. You have to bring it to your ear to hear the count. And I did that when I snagged the rope or when I had to pause.

The sound system is great. With nobody else in the room, you picked your music and the loudness. I had on Sing Hallelujah by Dr Alban and Elton John's Funeral For A Friend. It was great not having to count. I could enjoy the music and the jump without worrying about the count at all. I can never go back to manual counting again.

I reached my goal of a thousand jumps. Afterward, I hung out and danced to the music for half an hour. By baseline with be a thousand for now.

In between I also did strength training but it was so hard to concentrate when my mom kept commenting on how it's so not logic in movie Charlie's Angel - hard to contain my laughter!

Well, I guess the best English speakers are the English themselves emoticon
Must be nice to have jumping rope with different accent (love the English, Scottish, Spanish accent!) but I guess we might more to play around with the jumping rope not using it!

Do tell us how's your experience with the rope. That sounds good- just hit the button while jumping to know the number especially when we're so pump up in our jumping and don't want to stop.

OK, I put in the batteries but haven't used it for jumping yet. The talking rope has Chinese accent. If it's understandable then why should i complain? Well, the Chinese complained about the accents in the movie Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon where Cantonese actors were speaking Mandarin. If Chinese can complain about Chinese of another dialect, then I think I have the rights to complain too. It just doesn't sound as pleasant as native speaker. I think it's true with any language.

Anyway, one of the rope handle uses 2 AAA batteries. The other handle has metal plates in it to balance out the weight, so you don't have one handle heavier than the other. I haven't figured out the auto announced at 50 yet. But you can hit the talk button and it will announce the current count. So you can hit the talk button while jumping to hear where you're at. The cord that came with it was tightly wounded, so I'm hanging it up to straighten it out. We'll see if it will give me trouble when I try it tomorrow.

P.S. They should have put on the box "Now with Chinese Accent!" then I would understand and won't complain. LOL

SKATER - I always had same problem with my earphones, so I now I don't do workout with my mp3 but turn on the tv for whatever programme, haha. Let us know how do you with your new rope, it does sounds very fun to try!

TESSA - sorry to hear about your condition, I hope you will get better, don't force yourself with heavy activities. One of my friends also in no-exercise state as it was advised by her doctor. Well, she still can do very light exercises but it do tends to be annoying when you're so close getting to your goals but you have to stop temporary.

I haven't been doing much of anything. Been dealing with stress and tension in my neck and shoulders. Went to the Doctor about them and about a knot on the top of my head. The knot turned out to be a cyst. The Doctor lanced it and gave me muscle relaxers for my neck and shoulder muscle spasms. Been pretty loopy for the past few days. Since I'm layed off, I really didn't care. Feeling a lot better now, can move my neck without a lot of pain. This has put a cramp in my exercising. Now we are on our second big snow of this year. We have got more snow this year than in the last 20 or 30 years.

Finally, I figured out how to use the sound system in the groupex room at the gym. I was thinking that I had to buy a boom box for music, but that is no longer needed. The earphones I was using kept on falling off and I was getting frustrated. So now I have the music. Soon I will have the smart rope. lol

I've ordered the Talking jump rope from Amazon. Hopefully I'll get it this week as the weather is improving and I need to get going with my exercise program. The Talking rope will help me start recording the number of jumps. No guesswork, no approximation, no racking my brain trying to count or remembering. I need to build a baseline and go on from there. The time for action is NOW.

Amazon has it. I didn't do enough research on this one. Actually, I didn't know what I wanted back then. I thought I only needed a counter. So I'll have to junk this one and try the Talking digital jump rope.

It has time and calories counter. But the LCD is too small. What I'm going to do is count for the set and use the final number from the counter so I don't have to keep track of the total. The LCD is just too small to be of use during the exercise. I'll use the magnify glass to read the numbers at home.

Yes, a jump rope with programmable beeping sound would be much better. Who can be looking at the number while jumping anyway? We want audible feedback. We are designing the ultimate jump rope for Spark people here.

Yeah, maybe we can suggest this to the Spark Guy. Spark has created their own products like the ball, the band, etc etc, why not useful and reliable jumping rope? It's our cardio machine on the go, especially if you stuck in a hotel, the weather is not good for running or the gym is under refurbishment.

Yes, must be nice to have counter that beep, at least you know how many jumps you've done, maybe counters that beep everytime you reach 50s, 100s and so on. When you're so into the jumps, it feel so annoying to just stop and squinting at the numbers through the sweat running on my face. So, I end up counting myself, made my brain works as well emoticon

So, what a digital jump rope do other than the counter?

OK, my digital jump rope has arrived. Unfortunately, you need the eyesight of a teenager to read the numbers. So we'll see how I make out with it. As for counting to hundred, of course, you count by set of tens. It would be nice if you can set the rope to beep at ten and triple beep at 100. Then I don't have to read.

Today I did 59 minutes of sandwich workout (cardio + strength), almost 1 minute to 1 hour workout, can't believe it myself! Did 3 sets of jump squat, the #1 I did 36 jumps, before my usual routine of strength training (which I just updated this month, hehe) and 2 more sets after the strength training, 30 jumps each set. So far, this week I did total 216 jump squat! I think today I did more compare to what I did in January workout emoticon

I'm jumping rope everyother day now. I did the 10 minute workout here on spark for jumpropers. I think I hung pretty well w/ it. The calves are feeling the blunt end of it : ). I also speed walk on the treadmill m-f and do two miles.

Haven't done any jumps yet, but have got back to running. I ran this morning for 38 minutes for 2.74 miles. Will be jumping tomorrow.
I through it was just me not paying attention when I posted. But, I guessed they did change it. It does look better.

(Hmm, this reply post interface looks different than yesterday)
So, how long does it take to get the counter jumping rope? I wish I've one that's good, not like my current one that either gives me extra number or skip 1 jumps. Now I just count by tens, hundreds sounds too mouthful emoticon

FATHIN, Gee why didn't I think of that? While I'm at it, maybe I should get a book to read too. This way, I can get in shape and get smart at the same time. Or maybe even get into some cooking to keep up with Tessa. ;)

Today did 60 jump squat, felt like I did a bad frog jump when moving from jump squat wider-than-shoulders to jump squat sumo, hehe.

SKATER787 - Try using bead bracelet as counter while jumping , must be more challenging, hehe.

I forgot to put how many in my first post.
If you're a beginner to jumps (jumping rope, jumping jacks, jumping frog, etc), aim 150 weekly (example, 50 jumps for 3 days in a week).
And if you're a regular, aim 500 weekly.
(I'll update this in my first post, too)

Remember to do the jumps on alternate days as this is also a part of strength exercises - need to have 1 or 2 rest days.

Was disappointed that Bob did NOT give a WARNING re knee problems.
But, then, I've noticed when I see him on Biggest Loser that he is all about HIMSELF -- and takes everything personally. By that I mean that if a contestant doesn't do well, Bob acts as if it makes HIM look bad.
So I wasn't really surprised that he wouldn't think about the possible negative effects on some people.

It's February - some celebrate Chinese New Year, others Valentine's Day and there are also others celebrating Prophet Muhammad's Birthday and I think there's Chinese version of Valentine's Day, about fortnight after Chinese New Year, guess February is month of love emoticon emoticon
Whatever you're celebrating, enjoy with your family and friends no hate and hurtful words and actions emoticon .

This month, the theme will be love and cute bunny so it will be the inspiration for our February challenges:
- emoticon do jump squat on alternate days. No idea on how to do this? There are several ways, I suggest you try these links as guides:

- emoticon Do something creative with oranges, tangerine, lemon, lime this month and share what you did in your blog!

- updates in this forum what you did for February 2011 challenges.
