YAY, I completed my 12km fun run in 01:28:51 (hh:mm:ss)

I'm pretty pleased with myself, although I had to ease up and walk a handful of times,I was determined not to walk anymore than half a kilometer and I definitely stayed well within that.

I can't wait for the marathon, I think though I really have to up the anti on my training if I want to be successful in it though.

What do you do in between clinics honey?

Wish we were in the same country/city - you'd make a great chat/jogging buddy :)

And you are right, I will see how the weekend goes and get back to you about what I decide.

Well running 2 minutes in one stretch can be rather daunting, especially if you are just starting out and already dealing with ghostly injuries and if by the looks of your blog you were mentally prepared for 1 minute intervals.

A couple of ideas that would be worth a go I think, would be to firstly drop your speed back just a little, even if you feel like you are simply speed walking but making sure of you have that motion of having two feet off the ground as you get with a run. So that even if it is at snail pace you can make it to the end of that 2 minute hurdle.

2 minutes really is a magic number for your aerobic conditioning, as this is the point where your cardiovascular system really steps into action and you begin to increase your longevity and endurance in an activity.

Perhaps ask your coach to break down your 2 minutes into quarters or take a watch and congratulate yourself in your mind each time you reach the end of the next 30 secs. 1.01min is the point of no return, you just past half way, can't stop now, you did the hard part by making it that far.

Positive self talk is so so important when you are keeping to timed or intervals (or any of this to be honest) but encouraging yourself, regardless of who is infront or behind you, your run is about you and you alone, and the only person you can really beat or lose to in that situation, is you!

Good luck for your next run!

Your aerobics class will really help your lung capacity for your next run and your muscular endurance, great move to start that.

As for me, I'm pondering if I should be cutting back to a half marathon, I am having a slightly wobbly day confidence wise, especially with the 12k run this weekend.

Hey....somehow I fell out of this thread...thanks to the weekly digest I found it again! I love those digests!

Any how - thanks for sharing the story about hurting yourself because you didn't listen! That will make me pay more attention! LOL I'm scared of pain! So far so good - no shin splints at all this week.
Last Thursday I started an aerobics class and that was fun - I'm hoping it will not only help build leg muscle but that it will help to build strength with cardio breathing - I have the hardest time with that...

Yesterday in training we were supposed to run 2 minutes and walk 2 minutes. You can read more about that in my blog but needless to say - I didn't make the 2 minute runs. LOL About 1 minute was all I could do - but I did it nonetheless!

Keep going strong!

2010 is my year to try it again!

I think that was so important, making sure you really pushed yourself, and I'm sure that anyone left in the dust will appreciate what you are trying to achieve for your own personal benefit.

1 week to go for my 12k, 10 weeks today for the Mara!

Training is going ok, missed a couple of runs this week, due to a medical procedure meaning I had to take things a little easier, but making up for it with lower impact work at the gym xo

Yes I enjoyed it... but I also really pushed myself to do my best, which meant leaving my lil sis in the dust (selfish me LOL) She didn't train for it like I did. Anyhow, there was a tiny little part of me that wanted the ribbon for best in my age group, but I didn't get it. So I celebrated walking my best time and moved on.

We live in a small town, so there aren't many opportunities for these walk/runs unless I go to the major cities. I did hear that there may be a walk this summer in a nearby small town, so I am going try to find out about it.

Jennifer:)

That's a perfect mindset too I think, and the only thing that can stop me, is me.

Did you enjoy your 5km?

You'll be fine... remember you are only trying to beat yourself. That was my mantra when I did my walking 5k!

Good for you honey,

It's so important to listen to our individual bodies, as frustrating as it may be.

A few years ago now I started training towards a big adventure race here in New Zealand, I didn't know what I was doing, just that I was hell bent on making it across the finish line, bearing in mind I gave no realistic thought about how I was going to make it to the start line!

Sadly, I never made it to either line.

Because I didn't listen to the advice of people who had been there, and most importantly I didn't listen to my body screaming at me to stop.

I hit a wall and tore one of my major supporting thigh muscles very badly, I could hardly walk for a fortnight, as soon as I got a hint of movement back, I got straight back into training, once again, ignoring all warnings and tore the same muscle, but WORSE than before.

I was in agony, and my pride was bitterly dented, it has taken me almost 2 years to pluck up enough courage to start making my way back to the goal line.

This time I have taken on board other experienced advice, I have listened to my body for the most part (of course once in a while we need to challenge ourselves past our comfort zone or we will never progress) and this time I have a plan to get to the start line, which I am on my way to now.

I will definitely let you know how the first run goes, and I am equally eager to hear how you get on with your shin splints and training too honey.

Ya know what! You are right! I am whinning and complaining about these shin splints like they are the end of the world...and it is just my bodies way of telling me to stay in check! Per my doctor I'm only allowed to do my 2 days of walk/run clinic. He told me to do that for a few weeks. He actually wanted me to rest for two weeks but I fussed and he met me half way.

Starting on Monday I will do my 2 days with the walk/run clinic with training and then at home I will do some indoor cardio - light on the shins and some strength training.

Good luck in your first race! Let me know how it goes!

2010 is my year to try it again!

MMmm a huge rock? Or just a little something to help you keep your pace at a steady level so that you don't counter all your hard work by being put out of action with a more nasty painful injury?

How are you training in the mean time? Aqua jogging is such a delight, and heaps of fun with friends, hindered I guess if you don't like water though!?

Thank you for cheering me on, I'm so excited, my first "race" is our regional City to Surf run, which is 12km from the centre of town to one of the big parks close to the beach. That's on 29th March. :)

Eeeek! Not long to go *bounces around*

The marathon, is a fairly flat run, which I thought would be good for my first 42k run ever. I was originally going to go for the half marathon, but all of my friends have told me that they know I have the toughs and determination to do the full 42k...so here I am with 11 weeks and 1 day to the start line.

Just quietly, I'm having small heart attacks!

Mind over matter though...mind over matter!

GIRL! That is awesome! Tell me more...what are you doing?

I'm training for a 5k but a huge rock was thrown into my path with these shin splints! NOT FAIR! But I move forward nonetheless!

Our big city marathon is this weekend. Little Rock Marathon - I have friends and my trainer is competing...she would like to see me with her next year - even if I only do a relay. I told her we would have to wait and see...stupid shin splints!
