I'm working on a big genealogy project and will be travelling to the Caribbean in February for it. I think when I get back home in February/March I am going to get really serious about working with my husband on our long-term money goals; I want to understand our finances better so I could take over if necessary.

I start getting Social Security this month so our finances are changing. I'd like to have some new goals since my genealogy work is going to be less intense and/or expensive after this February trip is over. I'd like to move and/or, if that's not possible soon or even if it is, this house has issues we need to fix before we could sell it.

I'm imagining next year (2013) is going to have some major decisions in it. My elderly cats are having problems and may not remain with us and I want to move on, etc.

I've started discussing money again with DH, our long-term thoughts, plans, and finances. He suggested I could sit with him as he works with the bills and money, making changes and just watch what he is working with as he works with it.

Well, this year (through 2013) I think I'm going to do travelling, while we can still travel. I decided yesterday that I want to go to the Caribbean in February for my genealogy studies and I invited my London researcher along (with me paying)! Too, in August of next year, there's the family I'm working on's reunion up in Washington State, across country so I'll be spending a lot of money for that too.

I figured out a budget to get me to the Caribbean and I printed it and gave it to DH and have not heard any screaming so it sounds like :-) it might work! However, I will have NO money for much of anything through 2013.

like I said I would save it for moving...you may need it more later on so I would keep things as they are now and just sock the extra away..

We've been to Florida now in February for two years and it looks like that will continue for at least the next year or two, health willing.

I am applying for my Social Security this year and would like to think of a "big" use for it like saving to move when we're 65, I want to move to a condo from a house, get rid of yards, boats, things that require a lot of upkeep and the two level space to a one level and all of that closer to the sons and grandchildren (and civilization :-) It will almost be enough so we could support a couple houses on it, in case this one takes awhile to sell and/or perhaps the savings could be used for the "repair" this one will need before it will sell well (roof, paint/flooring, etc.).

I'm also thinking of saving for the various repairs we need, getting them done now as we go through the next 4-5 years instead of waiting until the place is falling down around us and needs so much. I have a list of things I'd like done while we're living here, if only in case I can't get my DH out of here ever :-)

From my first post in this thread:

"We're trying to pay off our vacation from February and our exploratory trip to Florida last December. I'd like us to go visit my Aunt in San Francisco this Fall and then go to London on a genealogy tour. I'm sure DH would like to go back to Florida next February too. Will take some good sucking in of our money belt to make all that work!"

Well, didn't visit my aunt but paid for Florida, went to London and have that paid off too! We ARE going to Florida again this coming February. I bought a new refrigerator in the spring/summer, selling some stock at a profit and new living room furniture. In January I am going to replace the broken blinds in my bedroom, over the sliding glass door. I was going to try to get to a family reunion in Washington State in August but that has been postponed until 2013.

I have bought 2 Gazelle Edges. They looked like would be a fun workout but I really can't do it because of neck problems and lack of energy. I think I will put it Craig's List and see what I can get for it! I did buy some kind of exercise thingie for your abs but also couldn't do it because of my neck but I can use it to strengthen my legs and hip joints instead!!! Just discovered that by accident!!! I would love to buy a treadmill but for now, my bike and staying out of the kitchen will have to do!!!

years ago I bought the ab doer and boy was that a waste.. you just sit on it and hold on to the bars and do twists etc... well you do not need a machine to do twist... LOL never did lose any weight with it or even use it regularly.. bought a bike last year from walmart and it looked like what I wanted but it wasn't.. should have known it was too cheap.. the one I want is the one like they have at the hospital and they run 1200 to start with..mine was only 85..it works just not like I want it too.. I still do not use the wii like Ishould... guess I am like everyone else who spends a fortune but doesn't follow through with things..

I alternate between trying to make my knees feel better/stronger and not doing anything because they hurt/cause me trouble. I'm trying to get outside more, garden; I just read an article that said "dirt" might have an bacteria in it that is good for one, that mucking about in the soil has health benefits.

But I quit taking my Vitamin D pill (caused various side-effects I didn't like) and told the doctor on Tuesday I'd get out in the sun each day and drink more milk :-) Too, I did buy a "real" vitamin, the 1-A-Day for women 50+ or whatever it is. I had been taking the 1-A-Day gummies but they do not have any/much Vitamin B in it and I like Vitamin B.

I wonder how much money we spend in a year on various health "gadgets" like vitamins and failed exercise helpers, special "diet" foods, etc.

I love to watch TV and I know it's not good to be a couch potatoe but in the summer I refuse to go outside or turn the AC way up!!! I try to exercise during the commercials because they seem like a waste of time for me and I get bouts of cardio exercise when I get myself up off the couch~LOL! I love to dance to lively music but only when no one else is around!!!
I found that punching the air relieves stress and also helps with the belly fat!!! Sometimes I spar with my DH which adds to the enjoyment of the exercise!!! emoticon

Don't feel bad; I gave my wii Fit to my girlfriend cheap and my poor husband was upset about that after all the trouble he'd gone through to get it for me a Christmas or two before. I'd only used it 5-6 times and knew I didn't like fiddling with the "set-up".

I had an exercise bike back in the early 90's I actually used a bit sometimes but not enough. then I bought a used rowing machine that I had bought for only $25 but which had screws missing and didn't work well and I had trouble "getting down" on the ground there to use it, etc.

I joined a women's only gym and bought a private fitness instructor for a zillion dollars/lessons but then my asthma reared it's head and I was having problems with one knee and quit all that. But because of my weight he'd started my non-machine exercise portion really easy, just hand weights and a small, soft, grade school sort of kickball-sized ball one can get at the dollar store to put between my legs and "squeeze", and exercises to do against the wall; a routine I could totally do at home. I did for a little while then gave that up too and had a ball and hand weights and other little bits and pieces of equipment that I gave the same girlfriend when I sold her my wii.

We usually have neighborhood yard sales at least once or twice a year. I would hate to sell my Gazelle since it is the second one I have bought and said I would really use the second one! LOL!

I like that combination machine that is a treadmill, stepper thing combined, the TreadClimber:

It's way too expensive for me to even consider!!!

I am trying to get our boys room made into a sewing & crafts room for me! They have a rather large desk that has a couple of big, old computers on it that we don't need or use so let me have the space!!!

We have a 3 bedroom house but the master bedroom is big enough for 2 bedrooms. Right now it has the Gazelle that is collecting dust, along with the stability ball and other exercise equipment. Need to have a yard sale?!?

Yes, my sister-in-law is trading her Bow-Flex or one of those really good, cool machines to a workman for some work and I'm like thinking, "Give it to me!". She has the room. I'm sort of tempted for that new, smaller, combination machine that is a treadmill, stepper thing combined, the TreadClimber:

My second bedroom, that's more or less dedicated to the cat's litter? LOL if I cleaned that out well, it could become a "gym".

I, too am kind of leery of buying anymore exercise machines since I already have a Gazelle that I don't use, an abdominal apparatus that I can't use because of the osteoarthiritis in my neck~although it is good to use to strengthen my hip joints! Let's see now, I also have a stability ball that is collecting dust, ankles weights that make my calf muscles cramp, jump rope and resistance bands. But I still want that treadmill... emoticon

I just don't like to walk! I've tried the walking out front around and around the parking island, each circuit approximately 1/10th of a mile and ideal for walking, flat, no traffic (we're at the end of our development, surrounded by water on 3 sides so no one drives down here who doesn't live here) but way back in the early 1990's I realized I do not enjoy walking, at all, and quit trying to make myself like it; I figured I could "pick" something else that I liked better to do but have not.

I'm leery of buying any more exercise machines or gym memberships, etc. because it doesn't seem to work out; apparently it's not something I am willing to incorporate into my life/style.

I would love to buy a treadmill so I could walk everyday no matter what the weather was outside!!! They cost about $500 and I am not willing to spend that much on one and where would I put it? They are so BIG!!! I figure if I just got outside in the back yard and walked from one side to the other about 10 times that would be a good walk! The neighbors or their dogs might think I am a bit crazy but it's my back yard~right?

I got a hint of the mall walking program here but our mall is too far, at least halfway to Jason's and yoga, LOL.

DH agreed we should do some walking, "probably the sooner the better".

Yes, he normally walks too slow too and I'm trying to train myself to stay "back" with him, wait on him instead of always surging ahead (when we're going from car to restaurant or store, for example) just like I'm trying to get myself to slow down my eating so I don't finish way before him and get bored and order more to eat and drink!

So glad that Scott can walk without it hurting! My husband is a slow walker and I am a fast paced walker. Cramps my style sometimes because I like to walk fast and get somne exercise in while shopping. I usually tell him I will meet him someplace and send him to get something so I can walk at my naturally fast pace!!!

Both of us are going to England; it's "my turn" to pick the vacation. It has long since been my turn; we were going to England 3+ years ago but the economy said otherwise. LOL, I went up and got the 3 books and video Scott got me for Christmas and they're "London 2008" and "England 2008" :-)

Our RV days are gone I think. We went to buy Scott shoes yesterday, his heel spur is really bothering him (as well as the other leg is still swollen and not completely finished healing from having fallen and gashed it open and then its having gotten infected) and we were pitiful! I had to go into the Mall to find one shop, figure out if we could walk to it and my own bad knee was killing me so I found it was just straight across, the width of the Mall from the front entrance but it took us almost an hour to get there, it was a tiny shop, all filled with lots of women and the men's shoes (no one sells men's shoes anymore!) weren't what he wanted/needed and the clerks were few and too busy. But, we had to sit down to rest! I hadn't thought to use my inhaler before coming out into the weather and was limping because of my knee, etc.

Meanwhile, Scott's trying to limp on both legs and walking really really slow, so it's is almost embarrassing me :-) We finally decide there's nothing there for us and the next store to go to (in another shopping center but a small strip place that has its own parking and won't be busy and that I know will have the shoes he needs, it's a "real" shoe store with clerks that measure your feet, etc., but they will be hideously expensive (but worth it) and Scott was complaining about prices already) but we get to the food court and have to sit and rest again.

I look around a bit and read the directory again and decide there's one more place here in the Mall. It's downstairs and we're only a few feet from the elevator so go down and can't find the place. I keep walking each way and then see it, signal him to come but then get to the store and a quick look reminds me of what I found on the Internet, it's all women's shoes! So I quickly hold up my hand, "Stop" and go back to him but I'm dying so put everything into it and go out of our way and find a bench (by a little pool/fountain under some stairs) so we sit there and finally decide to see if we can get to the car.

I decide on the steps (he's walking all the way back to the elevator) and I'm going up the steps and a young punk guy is coming down and it's the first time in my life I've realized/felt how vulnerable I am now. He (anyone) could have grabbed my wallet, pushed me down the stairs and I'd have been a goner. I got to the elevator about when Scott got to the floor and we wound our way back to the car. We sat in it like beached whales.

But we got to the other, "good" store and after quite awhile and trying on at least 10 pairs, he got a pair of shoes he felt good with. We went out around 2:00, for a half hour trip to buy a pair of shoes and it was now 5:00. Our pizza place (yeah, tonight!) is in the same set of buildings so we went and got a drink and shared some chicken tenders and fries. When we got home my knee was worse than it's been for a very long time (I'm not sure if yoga did it or what) but I took a couple Advil and that got better (I keep forgetting that Advil works on my knee, just not on my regular aches and pains).

Yes, those pudding commercials are hilarious.

I'm going to go try my ATM card in a bit, see if it works :-) I'm taking my 5th out of 5 yoga classes and want to have money to pay my teacher for the next 5.

We got our lawns cut (is that like "hairs cut"?) yesterday and I always go out and put the money/cash in my landscaper's shorts pocket; he works without a shirt, is a bit younger than I am but has his grown son working with him, my "private dancer" LOL. Last week I paid him for cutting out front but then my husband gave me a check for the weeding work they had done last month so when he came around back I gave him that and he quipped, "I like it here, they give me money out the front door and then I come around back and they come out there and give me more". He's a really nice guy and I'm so relieved to have found him (after the other clowns I had to call/try to get to help/those who wrecked the yard in the first place, etc.).

I guess my life has really changed since last summer; landscaper fixing things so they "work" now and I don't have to worry; sold 2 cars and bought 1 "better" one that fits us both, drove the RV to Florida in December, spent February in Florida, bought all new living room furniture (including a sleep sofa so I don't feel so helpless if people want to stay, they weren't able to before), have started yoga, sold the RV, and am going to England in the Fall.

Surprise, surprise for me! We bought a new car today! emoticon We had been saving up and had the money and decided we would only spend $21,200 on a car. We went to the car lot and test drove a Hyundai Elantra and we liked it very much~excellent air conditioner!!! I live in the central valley so that was a number one priority besides the cost.
We bought the last 2012 Hyundai Elantra on the lot, they can't keep them for long because they sell so fast. Of course, I will start saving up for another car right away. I put $100 away every month towards another vehicle. Next vehicle will be for DH~he want a truck. I feel so blessed and a little spoiled right now but that's okay, I feel I earned it by being a good saver!!! emoticon

One of our goals this year was to buy another car so our youngest son could use one of our cars. We were looking for a 2011 model but waited too long and now we are looking at 2012s. We have to money to buy a new compact car but DH is dragging his feet and I am afraid that I will be the one who looses her car so the youngest son can have a car! That's totally unfair! Even though I no longer work, I do need a car to get to my volunteer jobs and to see my friends!!!

Yesterday I heard from an Australian 4th cousin and his wife; my Minnesota 4th cousin sic'd them on me, LOL. They are visiting the US for a month or two and will be wandering up the East Coast weekend after next and want to stop by. He's 3rd cousin with the Minnesota one, they had the same great great grandfather whereas my great great grandfather was their's, brother so we only get same blood lines back at the great great great stage, the 1760's! But it's my same London line so will be fun, keep me motivated to get over there.

No, we haven't heard anything about the RV but I don't worry about it; its storage isn't being paid for by us and we let the registration lapse (we have the plates; the guy selling it uses his), we do still have it insured though but that's not too bad since it's an RV, not used much. Every now and the DH mentions it and gee, we should go get it but I squelch that idea :-) and suggest he lower the price we want for it and just "get rid" of it. With the gas prices so high and now it's going toward hot weather in Florida, probably not as much demand for it down there.

My brother and sister-in-law want to go to California so if DH doesn't want to go, I'll go alone/with them. London is part of a week-long genealogy conference and even with DH along as a "non-participating member" it's a Holiday Inn for 7 nights for him and, together (me with participating in "field trips"/lectures and special dinners (don't know if he's included there)) it's like $3,000. Of course, we'd need the airline tickets but they're round trip $700 at the moment so we could probably do okay with $5,000-$7,000. I might go alone and have him meet me on like day 4-5 and then quit the group and we'd do our own thing (I have other places I want to go and I want to meet up with my researcher). Florida for him was equally expensive so. . . :-)

I saw each year had this :-)

We're trying to pay off our vacation from February and our exploratory trip to Florida last December. I'd like us to go visit my Aunt in San Francisco this Fall and then go to London on a genealogy tour. I'm sure DH would like to go back to Florida next February too. Will take some good sucking in of our money belt to make all that work!
