I work at a tech company and my job involves a lot of watching computer monitors to make sure our systems are running. It helps to have something to pay attention to -- if that's not a current emergency I work on projects for work, log into SparkPeople and stay motivated for my fitness program. But the biggest thing is just listening to music that is interesting without being distracting.

I sleep!! If I am working I sleep, even if I slept the night before. I once fell asleep at a red light at a busy intersection! Never ever again!

Treat nurses well, we control the good drugs. ;)

I am a nurse on a busy medical unit. Night shifts are usually very busy, so that helps keep me awake. I make sure I get some sleep (or sleep in) the day of my first night shift. If I get really sleepy, I get a coffee from our 24 hour Tim Hortons (not a double double or anything like that though--too many calories!)

I am an LPN in a nursing home, I am usually busy all night long when I am at work so I stay up there. Its when I have nights off that I can't stay up and usually end up falling asleep which makes it hard to establish a sleep wake cycle .

Before I wrecked my knee i would bring in a yoga workout dvd or maybe do a 1 mile walk away the pounds at the beginning part of my shift I found that it helped give me that endorphen boost to keep me going. I'm hoping to get back to that again once i get the go ahead from the physio therapist which I'm sure now that I've joined a gym with his consent that I will be able to do some low impact stuff

CANUCKGIRL_EH and FREDANN, I also have a tendency to drink plenty of water throughout the night, leading me to having to relieve myself about every half hour or so! Lucky for me the washroom is downstairs so I also get in a bit of unscheduled exercise each and everytime!

I work in a community home as well and a lot of my time is spent doing various cleaning chores which keeps me from letting the sleep demon take over! However, when I am doing my paperwork portion of the evening I have to get up every now and then to keep me awake. I also have a reputation of putting on some music and quietly have a solo dance party!

CANUCKGIRL_EH, that is so funny!! I eat a lot of watermelon at night too and usually drink about 50 ounces of water! That creates quite a few trips to the bathroom, true enough!! I thought I was the only one doing that! I love watermelon and usually eat a pretty big portion every night!

I am a CNA also in a small assisted living home. I have to do 2 hour checks and take care of anyone that gets up through out the night. I watch TV and do chores mainly. I have things I do everynight (chore wise) and then every night I have something else added on that changes nightly. I tend to spread out the chores and such so that I don't fall asleep. If I feel myself getting sleepy, I get up and go do something. There has been nights where I do extra just to stay awake. lol

I'm a cna in a hospital at night. I have a work bag that I have knitting projects and school books in so that I have something to do during my quiet time. I also make sure that I do hourly rounds on my patients and usually go visit the other cna's and nurses on the floor at some point during the night. I try to drink a lot of water, and if I get too tired, then I drink coffee.

It's usually harder to stay awake when I'm sitting with a patient because I'm in a dark room. During that time, I usually watch tv, or do homework, surf the internet and knit. Sometimes, the charge nurse will let us sit outside the room if we can see the patient in the window.

I work in a group home so once all my chores are done i have the night to myself until 6am when i have to start getting people up and showered and ready for the sheltered workshop. I do have to do hourly bed checks but what I do to stay awake is maybe do a quick workout, do some crafts, bring in my laptop and my internet stick and play games and other internet stuff, i will sometimes bring in my potable dvd player and watch a movie (don't know how to work the fancy surround sound they have in the home...LOL)
but my biggest thing i find when I'm really tired is drink alot of water and eat watermelon because I'll have to pee every half hour so just when i feel like i'm wanting to nod off i have to get up and pee....LOL

I have a very sedentary job. Basically after my patient has fallen asleep I have to stay in front of the computer and monitor, observe, take notes and only intervene when necessary (I work in a sleep lab). After a while I tend to get really sleepy. My tips for staying awake: stay busy! Knit, make a grocery list, plan my meals for the next few days, whatever it takes to keep my mind on edge and my body functional! Eating works great too, but you know the downfall to that!

I also keep a resistance band in my bag and once a while will do some strength training exercises at work. It's great for keeping me awake!

What are your tricks for staying awake at night when you work?
