I just got back to running outside after about a month off due to it being too dark in the morning. My knees are slowly adjusting to the work, but my running time is still great! I'm actually looking forward to the brisk fall mornings. It really wakes a body up!

I love running outside, but I'm not too keen on running during Michigan winters. I guess I will just take one day at a time and just keep up a fitness level that will allow me to ease back into outdoor running next spring.

I have never ran inside on a treadmill because I'm scared that I'll fall off. (In my defense, I DID fall from a treadmill once) Lol.
I LOVE running outside though. I'm a beginner, so I can't run at stretch but it leaves me with an amazing feeling of accomplishment. Plus you can tweak it in accordance to your stamina and/or mood.

I just started running this past Spring. Before I started I couldn't go 700 feet without getting a side stitch, but now I average 3-4 miles 5 days a week at a 10 minute pace, and have done one 5K (doing two more in September, then an 8K at the end of the month). I live in the Chicago area, and this morning was 40 degrees out. My biggest problem is that I live in the country, so I am running through fields and trails. My feet get wet, and this morning were so cold! (45 degrees out) I hate the thought of not running this Winter, and losing my conditioning. We have a treadmill at work, but I know I won't use it. Too boring, I love being outside and running trails with my dog!

Man, running with asthma must be so hard!

My biggest challenge right now is the heat. I totally prefer running outside, but I live in AZ and it's sooo hot right now. I keep meaning to get up at the crack of dawn to run, but I wake up to the alarm, remember the treadmill in the next room, and hit snooze a few times. By 8:00 am it's already over 90 degrees outside.

I can hardly wait for autumn. It's my favorite time of year, and now that both of my boys are in school at least part of the day I'll be able to run outside again! Woo hoo!

Today will be my first day in a while of running outside. I have athletic induced asthma which causes allergens to impede my breathing when I'm working out. I don't need an inhaler currently, but I do need to be careful. I chose a 5k by the beach because there are less allergens there. Southern California is not an easy place to train, due to all of the pollution, but I'm trying my best. I've been working on building stamina with the treadmill so my lungs will be stronger. Wish me luck tonight!!

When I run I always run outside. I hate running inside on the treadmill. I run 3 times a week and rain or cold doesn't bother me. However I don't like to run when it's very hot, I run early in the morning at such days.

I have a subscription on a gym but I use that for strenght training, Pilates and Zumba.

I feel like I run much more than walk when I am running outside compared to the treadmill. So many different routes to try. And if you havent try the maps feature on here, you flag your route, put how long it took you and volia avg. mph and calories burned, and a button to add it into your cardio tracker. So cool! Its under the Healthy Lifestyle Menu - Fitness Page above.

I love running outside. Running on the treadmill is boring and I feel like I lose steam. After about 2 miles I feel like I could run forever outdoors. Living in Southern California, weather does not become much of a problem. When it gets cold, rainy, or very hot, I make adjustments to my schedule so I could still run outside.

Thanks for the tip! I had to drive hubby to the Dr this morning and there are white out conditions so I decided that it probably is not a good idea to run today, which is disappointing because the roads are now all dry!

Anyone have a "nope too yucky" rule for running outside, and if so what is it? We woke up to a surprise snow storm this morning - I was really hoping to try out my new road route but I'm concerned about 1) slipping on the wet spring snow and 2) cars not being able to see me. All trails are out due to even worse slipping concerns. Should I hang up my shoes today and try again tomorrow?

No gym membership (it's half an hour away anyway) so it's outside or nothing. The weather here in CO has been gorgeous (dangerously dry and warm but gorgeous) up until this week when we got a good spring blizzard. Luckily it's still warm but my trail is likely ice packed now :-( I just mapped out a 4.3 mile route in the neighborhood that I can work with for now and will extend it as I get in better shape for the race on Memorial Day.

Yes dealing with the weather can SUCK. Although I was proud that I was jogging in 20 degree weather and getting warm (layers!) It's going to make the late spring and summer seem like cake!

I've been doing my short runs at the indoor track during the winter but long runs outside. I slipped on ice once but was ok and a few weeks back it was snowing. A miserable 6 miles but we did it!

My Motivation - Race preparation. I think I need a set race to keep on track. Other motivation is sense of accomplishment and getting back in shape.

Hi, Melanie. I can relate. I live in the Northeast, and it has been brutally cold more often than not this year. I am SO sick of winter this time around! Anyway, the weather's supposed to be milder the next few days here too, so my plan, like yours, is to make the most of it, but the days it's colder and I see other people outside walking or running, I always admire them and think "There's someone who values him/herself and who cares about his/her health!" And I want to be one of those people--in my actions and not just in my thoughts--so that helps motivate me to get out there with them.

But there have been many skipped runs these first two months of the year, so I understand that it's hard, and I think there *are* days when it's just too cold/dangerously cold to spend a lot of time outside, and on those days, I just make sure to keep my calories in-check and to stay on-track nutrition-wise since I won't be getting a lot of exercise. (I walk to/from work and walk all my errands, so I get some exercise and fresh air even if I don't run.)

Good luck, and enjoy the warm weather. :)

I am doing better now, I think I was hitting a low. The past three days I've done 5, 6, and 6 miles. I think I also need to get some good running pants that will keep me warm in this weather which now is in the teens, and warm in the colder months when it's like negative outside.

I am running outside. I live in Colorado which has been amazingly warm lately (though they predict snow tomorrow). I always promise myself I will go just a mile, but then after that mile my body has warmed up and I always keep going. For the last stretch I am usually thinking about a bath or warm shower.

I live in Indiana, and have run in the -15 degree weather. Luckly it seems for the next couple of mornings it might be warm. I'm planning for the next three days to get out there and jog at 6am.

I'm like Tia here living in AZ but my motivation is going to be needed when it's 110 outside in July! I do have a gym membership and love it because I not only can run on the tread when I want to but they have some great classes that I take for in between the runs!

Just push through it and remember how good it is for you!

I run outside. I am training for a Feb marathon. I can't do the treadmill (I don't have a membership, but don't like the treadmill even if I did)
My motivation is to just keep the schedule up. Keep the training going so that I do well on my marathon.
I suppose it doesn't hurt that I like to run in the winter...

I am starting tomorrow going to train for a half marathon. I'm not actually doing one, but just doing the training for one. Anyways, I jog outside in the freezing cold, cuz I don't want to pay for a gym membership just yet. It's getting harder to do it almost every morning.

Are there other people running outside like me? What's your motivation to get out of the house?
