The 173rd anniversary of an almost legendary event is about to take place in a few weeks and the Washington On the Brazos State Historical Site is ready for a celebration.

The signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence will be commemorated during a free, two-day festival, February 28th-March 1st at the site known as The Birthplace of Texas. This celebration brings to life the Republic of Texas Era. The festival will be held from ten am until five pm, each day.

A Texas sized birthday cake will be part of the
celebrations.

During the two day celebration, the 293 acre park along the Brazos River is transported back to the time when Texas was a sovereign nation. Costumed re-enactors and members of the Texas Army, along with skilled craftsmen and talented musicians, fill the park as Texas commemorates its inception. Statesmen of the era, such as Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Anson Jones, will be on hand to explain to visitors the importance of Texas Independence. At the Visitors Center, guests will be able to preview the Park Association’s new web project, the Spirit of Independence. The interactive web site is being constructed to allow teachers and students access to the wealth of information and primary sources available at Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site. The Spirit of Independence has been the focus of a major fundraising effort, designed to increase awareness of the unique place that Washington On the Brazos holds in Texas History.

The Star of the Republic Museum at the park will open a new exhibit that weekend. The exhibit, ‘Texas Transformed: Early Maps of Texas,’ includes the largest map of Texas, on loan from the Texas General Land office, and measuring about eight square feet.

On Sunday at 11am, the Park Association and the Ron Stone Foundation will dedicate a marker and rose garden to their beloved supporter, the Late Ron Stone. The Antique Rose Emporium willunveil its newest rose, a yellow bloom entitled ‘Ron’s Vision.’

The traditional public celebration begins at two that Sunday afternoon at the Amphitheater. Dr. Stephen Hardin, professor of History at Victoria College and wide acclaimed author and expert on the Texas Revolution will be the guest speaker. The Tanner Family Minstrel Show will help celebrate the occasion with a concert filled with music, songs and laughter. A Texas size birthday cake will be served to concert goers, with the help of the Washington County Historical Heritage Belles.

This event is made possible through funding from the Washington On the Brazos State Park Association, Exxon Mobile Corporation, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative and Embarq. www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findades

DYKT a MCDonalds quarter pounder with cheese has fewer calories than a Chipolte Chicken Burrito? How bizzare is that? And there is a link in each of the Food Showdown emails that takes you to a message board where you can discuss that showdown.
