Since nuts are not allowed on Induction, then I would assume that almond milk would not be allowed on Induction. The recipe for the Almond Joy shake has 7 carbs.

The nice thing about the "Homemade Atkins Shake" is that it is Induction friendly. It only has 2.8 carbs.

I make almond milk shakes using Unsweetened Vanilla almond milk, strawberries, a banana (which I guess you have to leave out for Induction, I'm not on Atkins but still low carb), 2 Truvias (though I imagine you could use Splenda) and some ice cubes. Even my daughter likes them.

She also drinks the unsweetened Chocolate Almond Milk with 2 Truvias and likes that. That must be induction-friendly, right?

I lost 70+lbs...and now the hard part, maintaining!

Almond milk does come in chocolate. I always get the unsweetened vanilla variety and just today bought the unsweetened chocolate. Have not tried it yet.
Now a shake I make is 8 oz almond milk, 3-4 frozen straw berries and sugar free protein powder. My DH likes it with chocolate protein powder and unsweetened coconut. I must admit I have not done up the carb levels so I am not sure if it would work at all for low carbers.

Sounds like almond milk would make a quick snack. Doesn't it come in flavors like chocolate?

Does it satisfy you enough for a meal replacement? Adding the egg and coconut oil would do that if it doesn't.

I have been making super quick and easy "shakes" using unsweetened Almond Milk, a little flavoring and sweetener. Just put everything in a cup with a lid, shake it up, and yummy. They are a little thinner than the Atkins shakes, but if you make them in the blender with a little ice they are thicker.....sort of like a smoothie. And for those watching their fat and calories as well as carbs, the almond milk has no saturated fat and only 40 calories per cup. Not to mention it is high in calcium and vitamin D, which is helpful if you are in the Induction phase of Atkins.
I have used different extracts (vanilla, banana, ect), sugar free Hershey's syrup, sugar free coffee flavoring syrups, even instant coffee powder to make them. If you are in Induction, I would avoid the Hershey's syrup, but the other flavors are fine for that phase.

I am pleasantly surprised just how much I actually like the Atkins shakes. I sometimes put it in a blender with ice and make a blended "faux" frappe with the mocha latte. =) Yum! emoticon

Most folks on Atkins don't count calories. You could leave one of the eggs and the coconut oil out and the calorie count probably would be similar to the Atkins product. But then it wouldn't have as much nutritional value.

374 Calories? Geez. The regular Atkins shakes are around 170. (And the cholesterol is 1/2 the amount. Anyway to bring that down? I am sure it is delicious but wow.

does the unrefined coconut oil taste of coconut, mainly sweetened coconut when you add sweetener to it?? I have been using the refined coconut oil because I have a VERY strong dislike to anything that tastes of sweetened coconut, and then refined stuff does not have the flavor.
I haven't been brave enough to through $10 dollars away on a jar of something that I will be unable to use.

Thanks for your input!

Making shakes at home is so simple. You can put them in something to take on the go with you or to the office. Remember the processed stuff usually has an ingredient it that you can spell or say and is usually bad for you.

I like that, but I usually don't bother freezing portions, When I cook like that, We just eat off of it til it's gone then I cook something else. LOL I don't know if that's lazy or boring but it works for me.

Hi- when I cook (which isn't often) it is for me only. What I like to do is spend an hour or so making some "good" food - and then portioning it out to individual servings. For example, I bake a chicken, or roast, or pork chops and then add some vegetables, wrap each portion in a ready-to-serve container, freeze it and VOILA! Dinner for one is ready whenever I need it. I also do a pot of soup, or some crockpot recipes and portion those out as well. This works for me - much better than trying to figure out what to make for dinner each and every day! Good Luck.

Do it, NOW!

Karen, I cook for two, and here's my solution. I buy bags of stir fry veg, and individual veg like broccoli and cauliflower and bags of frozen chicken pieces. I also buy and freeze in individual portions, hamburger, pork chops and steak.

Then I also buy anything that looks good in the marinade/sauce section. Each day I pull out a veg, a meat and a sauce. easy to either prepare the meat with sauce and serve beside the veg or cut up the meat into bite sized peices and do a stir fry method. add the sauce last in this case. I add extra veg to this type of stir fry though, or eat it with a salad rather than rice. However, there is a way to make a rice like accompaniment.

Cook a serving of cauliflower well, and break it up with the side of a fork. add your butter or whatever you would use on your rice, the put your stir fry over it. cauliflower makes a decent potato or noodle substitute if you cut it, break it or mash it to the right consistency. I make mashed cauliflower with butter and cheese on it. the cheese melts over the cauliflower and is very good.

anyway, I do hope you found something in all this that will be of help. Kitty

Chill rose, Cream doesn't really freeze well, since it is so high in fat it tends to separate. I've tried making icecream for the kids with heavy cream over the years and it took a long time to freeze and didn't get right for some reason. I wouldn't be surprised though if you could freeze the cream/rootbeer concoction. the fizz tends to create foam in diary products due to the protein I think, so it might even be fun. And it might have a layer of ice below too. its worth experimenting with I imagine.

Yacht lady, I find low carb recipes several ways. Start by clicking on the (low carb recipes) title above. this is a link to the whole section. then page down through to find names of things people have made or are writing about.

Second go to the spark people recipes area and just type in "low carb". for this though you are at the mercy of who ever wrote the recipe, what their idea of low carb is.

Thirdly click on just about any person's name in the low carb group and go to their spark page and I think there's a link on the right for the recipes they've written in or like.

frozen cool whip is high in transfats and High fructose corn syrup. It gives me heart burn every time. I wouldn't recommend it as a diet food, or as food at all. you'd be better off eating butter sprinkled with sugar.

Oh, goodie, goodie, coconut oil users!! I started using coconut oil about 6 weeks ago - internally and externally - and I can't believe what it's done for my skin! My SIL is visiting from KY and she's hooked on it also. When I received my first jar, whatever is in the oil my body must have needed desperately, because I could actually eat it by the tablespoon full. But that only lasted for a little while. Now if I don't get my 3 tbs. in a day I mix it with a bit of cream cheese and Splenda. I've even got my doggie on 1/2 tsp. 2 x a day!

They usually sell 2 kinds...one has been refined & good stuff refined out. The best ones still smell like cocounut. I can smell it when I open the jar.

I've purchased the refined ones by mistake & end up using them on my skin...I use unrefined in my food.

LOL, why do you think polynesian women have such beautiful skin!! rub away!!! I have to admit, I use animal fats on my skin as well when I have them. my hands never feel so good as after I've been butchering. probably cause not only do I have the animal fats, but they sit on the skin for several hours while I'm working. teehee.

I am not certain if it is unrefined or not. I will have to check the jar when I get home. It was 10 bucks a jar, so whatever they did to it, they didn't go cheap! :)

I have a question about the coconut oil. Hubby bought some organic and expellar (sp?) pressed Coconut oil. It was solid! Is it supposed to be solid? Kinda freaked me out! Ha, ha! I kept picking up the bottle and looking at it like it was an alien.

Chocolate

That's why avoid it. Its just not good for me anymore. I haven't had any for years. It was 1996, I think. On purpose.

Have you noticed how hard it is to find low carb bars that aren't chocolate coated? Geez...

I love the Atkin Shakes. I can't keep my son away from them. I buy the vanilla ones. They remind me of a McDonalds Milkshake. Nothing like slimfast to me. I use to force them down years and years ago. I don't know if they have changed or not. The cheapest place I've found to buy the are at Sam's Club.

I keep them in the fridge. Yummy:)

Hey Angel...do you like the Atkins shakes? The ones that you buy premade? I have never tried them because I assumed I would NOT like them...I always HATED Slim Fast Shakes, thought they tasted really nasty...so I was thinking i'd hate the Atkins ones too....

Home made Atkin Drinks sound Wonderful to me. I been buying the Atkin Shakes and Woooooo, they are so expensive. I gotta try something different around home. My Hubby likes them too. I think this could possibly save us money.

Does it save in the fridge well?

Kenna, most Walmarts sell a couple varieties of the DaVincis.

Netrition dot com is a fabulous place to get them as well having wonderful customer service. I ordered some more a couple of weeks ago as well as Fiberfit (similar to Sweetzfree, 0 carb liquid Splenda). I received an email that the bottles had broke in transit, so they would either try again or credit my order. I told them I'd reorder later but could they send the Fiberfit. That was just Friday and today when I got home from work, my Fiberfit was waiting for me.

Sheila is fabulous! I received one of her extra DANDR books last week. I can email her about a copyright. I highly doubt she minds anyone posting her recipes, but giving her credit is most definitely the right thing to do while checking with her.

Edited to add Sheila's response (she was online and answered back right away!):

""I absolutely do not mind one recipe here and there being shared on websites, blogs, & message boards - provided the source (just my website URL is fine) is cited & linked each time."

Happy Low-Carbing,
Sheila"

So .. the name of it is Sheila's Easy Breakfast Shake, from sugarfreesheila.com.

Don't you just LOVE her site? I check in often to see what else she's got goin on! I love that recipe...I used the eggbeaters like she said...but I guess the eggs would work too..so you would use 2 eggs then? Cool...I used Sugar Free Vanilla Torani...none of the grocery stores seem to sell DaVinci and i'm not one that will buy it on the internet and I don't like to go to different stores when grocery shopping...so since my store has Torani I just get that. They only have the Vanilla and Hazelnut in Sugar free...next time i'll try the Hazelnut..it was good with the vanilla though. Although DaVinci has a Dulce de Leche that I would LOVE to get...also the Mint Patty one too...

Kenna that is SugarFree Sheila's recipe and I agree, it's delicious!

I use 2 raw eggs instead of the Eggbeaters and for the syrup I use a little bit of caramel and eggnog sf DaVinci's.

Check in with the vitamins and herbal supplements, next to Pharmacy MamaSara. it's on the top shelf or second to top in our store, and Walmart stores are virtual clones so you can pretty much trust they're either the same or a mirror image.

Great! Thanks for that info, Kitty. I checked in one store today and didn't see it. Of course I was looking in the cooking oil section, so both bits of information will be helpful! Hopefully I will find some time to make it to Walmart in the next few days.

Walmart is carrying Virgin coconut oil in their dietary supplement isle if that helps. not in cooking oils, that is more processed. I use the Cooking stuff for making my hubby's cookies, and the virgin oil for uncooked stuff.

Hi Lisa,

Can you use this as a hot drink -- without the ice cubes? Any suggestions for non coffee drinkers who want to remain sweet free (cocoa powder without sweetner is just too bitter)?

I use the brewed in place of the instant and the boiled water.

I had to look for the coconut oil. Its very important to make sure its unfiletered or unprocessed or "virgin" (it still smells like coconut).

you can also find it online if you can't find it at your grocery.

Lisa -
Do you use the instant decaf coffee in addition to the brewed coffee that replaces the water, or just the brewed coffee?
I have never purchased coconut oil. Is it available at any grocery?
Thanks! Looking forward to trying this.

If you want to add to your tracker, or want the nutritional info, here's the link to Spark Recipes
recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.
asp?recipe=416972

If you just want the recipe

2 eggs
1 T virgin coconut oil (make sure it smells like coconuts)
1 T butter
1 T cocoa powder or Instant decaf coffee
1/4 t cinnamon
1/4 t pumpkin pie spice
stevia to taste (optional)
boiling water 4-6 oz
ice cubes

Directions

break 2 eggs into blender. Add all ingredients except ice. Blend. Add ice to desired consistency. Enjoy!

Nutritional info is for decaf coffee. Add 2g carbs for cocoa powder (cocoa is not induction friendly).

Don't shy away from this because of the "raw eggs" The boiling water cooks them just enough & then everything is blended. I don't like slimy things and I LOVE this shake!

I brew a pot of good french roast coffee (decaf) and then keep it in the refrigerator. I boil some in the microwave and this is my "boiling water", instead.
