I got a sales pitch today for a facial at a salon and turned it down. In one last attempt, the owner said, "but now that you're in your mid-40's this will make you look younger."

I was so pleased to correct her. "I'm in my mid-60's and you've now convinced me that I'm doing fine."

So here's my homemade facial soap: 1 bar ivory soap; 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Grate the soap; add boiling water until the gratings become smooth. Beat in the olive oil.
I've been using this for over 40 years and it keeps my very dry skin moist and apparently keeps the lines away.

Life needs balance

One that I saw on Pinterest (and actually tried too) is to mix a little bit (you don't need much) of cocoa powder into your favorite moisturizer. I was surprised that it looked really good, not too dark or too orange. On the plus side, it smells good and there's no waiting. On the negative side, it only lasts until your next wash (or heavy sweat I'd imagine) and you will think about chocolate all day!

I made some body butter tonite. 2oz emulsifying wax , 2 oz of oil ( olive, grape seed, canola ), and 10 oz of distiller water. Once lotion cooled added 6 ml of essential oils in carrier of 15 ml of jojoba and 15 ml of glycerin.
So tomorrow I will see if it is fitting to give as a present in the morning. Over nite I will refrigerate.

I have heard of using black tea bags made into a concentration that is sprayed on the body as a sunless tanner. I have never tried it so I can't say if it really works, but it is very popular on pintrest.

I will keep trying no matter what.
Little changes add up over time to make big differences.

Thx. I just read that Jane Iredale has a sunless tanner. Her products are supposed to be safe but I'll check the ingredients first.

Have a good day.

Does anyone know of a sunless tanning product - either a brand or homemade recipe? I've starting getting a couple of brown spots (nothing serious) but have been told to stay out of the sun. I miss the tan look. I'm not interested in being BRONZE, just a light tan.

I don't know if there are any OTC brands that are safe to use.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sue

So this gave me a very thin lotion that pumps out of a lotion pumper without clogging. I make a butter using more wax and Shea butter. ( just change out coconut oil for Shea butter and increase wax 1-2%. Store in a wide mouth jar)
Basic portions: with my specific portions in ( )

2% Emulsifying wax ( 5 grams)
8% coconut oil (20 grams)
10% Mediterranean blend oil (24 grams)
80% distiller water (192 ml)

In double boiler heat wax and oils till melted , lower heat and let remain at low heat (I give it 10-20 minutes) *I'm not sure why this makes a difference but it does
Separately, heat distiller water to similar temperature of oils.
I then use a stick blender mixing water and slowly adding oil/wax mixture
I let cool till below 105 degree F before adding Essential Oils
The amount of Essential oils is very personnel. Most like subtle, I like bold.
The Lime I used 2 ml. And added 5 drops green food colorant just for fun.

The coconut oil I used was unrefined and organic. It had a lovely scent.
The Mediterranean blend oil was a combo of canola, olive and grape seed. I purchased both at our local Costco. Using pure olive oil would work just fine.
The Emulsifying wax was a great find. Beeswax wasn't working for me in lotion, so I save my beeswax for balms and salves. The Emulsifying wax was purchased on line at a place called
"Mountain rose herbs". They also sale 100% pure therapeutic Essential Oils. I happen to have most of my oils from a couple other on line sources, but have tried their and they are good too. I get things from a variety of sources, but here has the wax that is working well for me.
I hope you enjoy. I picked up a digital scale on Amazon for making my lotions and it has been a big part of my daily tracking food at Sparkspeople.
Enjoy your runs. I'm jealous. I love to run but my body won't let me anymore ( arthritis ) emoticon
But I love to hear of others that still can and do. emoticon It's a wonderful thing.
The Shea butter is great and adding another % of wax would give you a protective kind of layer in areas that get a lot of friction during your run.
Sincerely, Julia

Thanks for your interest "HistoryRunner"
Once I find my notebook with the percentages I'll definitely post the details.
The Lime is an essential oil from distilling the peel of the fruit. Most time citrus peels are cold pressed. usually the oils of citrus are photosensitive. Since this one is distilled it does not have that as an effect. I kinda like the photosensitive side effect because it helps me tan up emoticon .
I also made some using orange essential oil in place of the lime. I really liked that one too.
The essential oils I use are therapeutic and usually organic.
I hope to find my notes soon.

Your coconut oil-olive oil blend looks really interesting, Julia. Is the "essential oil of lime" really essential (as in required, not as in the title!)? Could you supply some more specifics on proportions, process, etc?

Thank you! emoticon

Thanks Kittyf54 for the deer Tallow idea. My husband and I just bought (invested) in a side of beef. I ask for the fat, and I have redender (spelling..sorry) some of it, put a little tea tree essential oil in it, and froze it. I'm wanting to try making homemade soap, but have not purchased the lye yet. Lye is so difficult to obtain now adays due to drug enforcement laws. I guess lye is used to cook other things besides soap ... o well. I'll thaw some out and use it as hand cream until I made my own lye out of ashes from an oak fire.
Sincerely, Julia

Every time my hubby brings home a deer I save the fat/tallow and render it out for different uses. I know some people are not hunters or even meat eaters but I thought since it IS a natural remedy this is the appropriate place to mention the uses of deer fat.

I find it the absolute best hand cream. others try to do so well, but they fall short in different ways but a dab of deer fat soaks into the hands leaving them soft but not sticky like the natural vasaline I've tried nor greasy like regular vasaline.

it also provides natural field raised (I won't say grass raised cause deer always get into the farmers corn around here.) natural fats that have no antibiotics nor growth hormones added. I plan to use it for these purposes and if anybody has other uses I'd be happy to learn of them.

Rosacea - we've had success with non-hydrogenated, organic virgin coconut oil - applying it topically to the skin (be careful, a little bit goes a long way.) Do a test first to make sure you're not allergic.

Honey has better antibacterial properties than many OTC creams. Cuts heal 3x faster when covered with honey than with products like neosporin. There is a company that just received FDA permission to market bandages coated with honey as an infection preventer

Honey works wonders for acne!! I broke out so much when I lived abroad. (My small city was famous for its steel mill... terrible air quality.) I would use the oil cleansing method at night then apply organic honey and rinse in the morning. Witch hazel after cleansing the skin also helped with scarring and inflammation.

Just took my first milk, honey, almond oil bath~my skin felt great.

Awesome suggestions/recipes! So glad I found this team : )
For my thick, curly red hair that often gets very dry/frizzy on the ends I make a conditioning spray from 1 part olive oil, 3 parts rose water (or tap if i'm out of rose) and a few drops of lavendar or rosemary or rose oil for a nice fragrance (besides the medicinal benefits). Spritz it on the ends and I'm good to go!

Keep on keepin' on.

Beauty and the bicarb

No one would think initially that bicarbonate of soda would be a beauty aid. Try these ideas on for size:

Exfoliator - Combine bicarb with your usual cleanser. Excellent for removing the top layer of dead cells.

Hair - Control the greasiness by brushing in a small amount of bicarb to your hair. You will also dispel the residue of your shampoo in your hair if you add bicarb to the actual product.

Skin - Olive oil and bicarb added to your bathwater helps you relax and destress.

Feet - A paste of bicarb and water is good to rub the calluses away, and bicarb in hot water in a basin makes a lovely foot spa.

AE- I looked but couldnt find a recipe for the "vinegar/water/oil moisturizer, with grapeseed oil." Can you tell me again, please, how you make this?
As for Rose oil- I have some Rose Hip seed essential oil and it is very good for the skin- it is omega 6 fatty acids! I use this on my hands when I have been on the computer too long and my hands/ joints start hurting - it takes the pain away immediately!!

So I tried the vinegar/water/oil moisturizer, with grapeseed oil. Love it!! Now, I just have to find something with a better lid to put it in. The container I have isn't as tight as I thought, so when I shake to mix, I get drops of oil everywhere.

Has anyone thought of or tried it with rosewater? Think I'm going to do that for the next batch, along with some rose essential oil (pretty sure that's skin-safe, though I'll double check). A natural company I use occasionally uses rosewater in everything - it smells so good. And it's supposed to be really good for the skin.

Now to my question - anyone know of a way to keep the oil from separating? I know if making a vinegarette, mustard works, but I don't think that will be good on the skin. emoticon Any skin-safe ideas?

A good body or face scrub - sugar in vegetable glycerin. Walmart carries the glycerin in the cosmetics area. Or any health food store. The glycerin is moisturizing without being oily. And the sugar makes your skin super soft. If you have sensitive skin, get the bakers ultrafine sugar. Much milder of a scrub.

I just mix together til I get a nice paste consistency. You can add any essential oil you like. I usually use tea tree oil. I've also used grapefruit essential oil.

I'm trying the ACV toner and a moisturizer listed further down on this thread. Also mixing my own clay mask with clay powder, water, and just a drop or two of lavender oil. Guess I'm feeling like a facial tonight! emoticon

I"ve been using the whitch hazel along with some toner that I have. seems to be working great. I'll try the green tea after I run out of toner. Facial scrub once a week I use oo and corn meal. I nose is oily I just use cornmeal and water let it dry on face seems to absorb the oil pretty good.
Any suggestions for verdigo.--herb or something. I've been doinga exercise and using peroxide with water flush, Got to flush those chrystals out. Going to try the candle wax flush soon as I get the Health store.

Be the best you can be.

Humm, Slimchance, I was going to suggest the coconut oil. That is what I have been using for months and I haven't looked back. It is amazing stuff!

Mandie, have you ever tried swabbing some Apple Cider Vinegar on your face? You may smell like a salad, but it works really good. Even some witch hazel does the trick. You can even try to make a toner out of brewed green tea. It smells yummy and it does a LOT of good for the skin (I noticed it helped with my black heads, too).

Anyone have any good routines for blackheads? I don't really break out, but have oily skin and blackheads all over my nose and chin, along with large pores everywhere.

Does anyone out there have a good recipe for home made face cream/lotion? I am tired of spending $$$$ for Organic creams when I know that I can make my own for less and I will know exactly what is in it!! HELP!!!! I have used coconut oil and olive oil- but I think I may need something with additional ingredients.

I discovered a great facial cleanser/exfoliator the other day. I put a handful of baking soda in my hand and poured in a bit of olive oil and began washing my face. My skin looked and felt much smoother after. It took a bit of wiping with warm water to get it all off, but was so worth it.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

ACV works awesome with mosquito bites! I have also done a baking soda paste on the bite a few minutes then applying ACV to the bite after I wash the paste off. It takes the itching away for sure!!

Home remedy for mosquito bites
When you first notice the itchy mosquito bite, try applying a small amount of apple cider vinegar directly to the bump. If you have many bites, you may want to take a very hot bath in a tub filled with water and 2.5 cups of apple cider vinegar. This will help relieve the itchiness.

Because of ACV my husband was able to get off of Prilosec. That stuff is quite honestly a miracle in a bottle!!

My DD uses it for her, um, well monthly stuff. It works great for PMS, too!

I add 4 teaspoons ACV to the 1/2 liter water bottle I carry with me all day long. I sometimes go through 2 of those. It's just a daily habit since I found it works to greatly relieve arthritis pain.

not sure if I am posting this in the right place --- but ---Another favorite recipe that I use all the time is for acid reflux, gerd or heartburn - whatever you want to call it - here it is:
mix 1 tablespoon Braggs apple cider vinegar into 1 large glass of room temp water. You can add stevia or honey if you like for taste- drink it down!!
Works in minutes!!! and you get all the other health benefits of the vinegar and honey!!!

I also have a natural deodorant - either apple cider vinegar or witch hazel- put on a cotton ball and put on your underarms after your shower/bath- works great! ( the smell of the vinegar dissipates after a few minutes)

Just got this from a member of the Coconut Oil team:

Natural Deodorant

1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup corn starch or arrowroot powder
5 to 6 tablespoons of coconut oil

Combine dry and add in coconut oil to desired consistency. I keep mine in a small plastic container. Found this on the internet and I started using it last summer. This is not an antiperspirant.
