I can't wait til we start reading some new books. I have finished The time Traveler's Wife. I thought it was okay. It wasn't my normal kind of read, but once I got into it it was pretty good.

Great! I will go and purchase Atonement after work on Monday! I am extra excited about this! lol

Hey! We started Atonement about 2 weeks ago but it isn't "due" until the end of this month. It's a short book though. After that is "The Time Traveler's Wife".

Yes the UK version is closer but I buy the books used and most of them send from the US anyway. And most of the time I have gotten them pretty fast, this is an exception. So it's not Amazon but that company that I bought the book used from that's the problem. But we'll see, hopefully I'll get it soon..

have you tried the uk version of amazon.com I think it would be closer to you than the american/us site. They do ship overseas as far as I know, but I think it would be cheaper if you had the UK site. So far the US one has been pretty reliable and you can pay by check or credit card, and I get everything usually before the expected shipping date. The Historian was good, but I didn't like the ending.

I still haven't gotten the Historian.. I know the latest it can be delivered is the end of May so I am just guessing the company I ordered it from is really slow. Not ordering from them again, that's for sure. If I get it soon then I'll read it while you guys are reading Atonement, I think. I have The Time Traveler's Wife so I'll join you for that one.

"The Historian" is going to end on the 19th and then we're going to start Atonement. I just got it yesterday and it's a lot shorter than The Historian so it shouldn't take as long.

Sign me up. I'm ordering it today, along with Dr. Faustus (I know, kinda a bore, but it's for school). I just finished "Lipstick Jungle" by Candice Bushnell. It was really great and thought I'd throw the title out there for anyone else who's looking for a quick read. Don't let the 400+ pgs fool you. It is so well written, it will be over before you know it.

Don't they have Britain amazon website. I think I remember seeing one, but I could be crazy haha. Usually when I order mine in the U.S. it only takes a week, not the usual 2-6 or whatever they give you.

I ordered both the Time Traveler's Wife and the Historian from Amazon. TTW came after a week or so which is really fast, but I think it's because it was actually shipped from Britain. Still waiting for the Historian, can't wait, I am really excited to start reading it!

haha...i love classic style books and atonement(the movie at least) seems to fit that jane austen/bronte sisters type of writing. anyways. ummm I've only read the time travelers wife. I'll just say the title gives it all away. In this book time travel is genetic. I can't remember exactly, but it's like a gene that causes something to happen in your body that makes you time travel. It's different because it's simultaneous, meaning you can't control it, it just happens and you're gone. The time traveler meets his wife(I won't say how haha) and the book goes on to reveal a lot about his life(using the time travel) and his wife's life, and their life together. I'd call it a girly book, because there are a lot of "make you cry" moments but I think guys could read it and like it too.

My friend started reading Atonement and she told me it was kinda hard to read.

I ordered both The Historian and The Time Traveler's Wife on Amazon. It'll take three or four weeks before I get them though, since I ordered them used and I live in Norway.

just ordered the historian on amazon...cant wait to read it!

ps-time traveler's wife gets my second place vote

i've been reading reviews on amazon of atonement and a lot of people say the book is tedious and difficult to read because it has so much description and wordiness that weighs the reader down...has anyone else read it? what did you think?

The Historian has my vote too! I read a review on Amazon, and the first line was "If your pulse flutters at the thought of castle ruins and descents into crypts by moonlight, you will savor every creepy page of Elizabeth Kostova's long but beautifully structured thriller The Historian." and so I have no doubts that I'll love this book. History is a passion of mine as well!

Thats a great list of books and I'm excited :)

I just saw the movie of The Other Boelyn Girl and I wanted to read the book again. I'll pretty much read anything though.

I would have to vote for The Historian(Elizabeth Kostova)

The Other Boleyn Girl (Phillipa Gregory) would also be a great one but I know right now at our library the waiting list is really long and could be hard for people to get a hold of it due to the movie popularity. I would love to see it on the list later though.

Sounds like a good idea! What about books that inspire and motivate people. I am not necessarily taking about weight loss it could be anything from having a greater outlook on life or being a better person. Just a thought!

hey!!!! You can either vote on what's been recommended(sp) or add your own nomination. I will see what everyone likes the most and then I'll send out or post on here an official "ballot" sheet. Then the one everyone likes the most will be the first book.

The Other Boleyn Girl (by Phillipa Gregory) is an amazing book! I would recommend that everyone read it! It is about King Henry IV and his first two wives. Usually I don't like these types of books, but this book really is gripping and has a little bit of everything (love, romance, suspense, hurt, treachery). It is a bit on the long side, but it was so good that I powered through it in a couple of days! P.S. The new movie based on it is quite good, but doesn't even compare to the book!

First, feel free to look up any of the books I list to see if you like them. Second, if you list any books just kind of hint to what genre they are. Oh, and I haven't been keeping up with a lot of the new books, so if you have any new fiction books let me know.

War and Peace
Anna Karenina.......both of these fit into historical, but I also call them my historical dramas because they have a lot of history in them mixed with a lot of romance and drama

The Time Traveler's Wife....this is more of a modern day romance/sci-fi book because it have time travel in it, but also a complicated love story

The One-Armed Queen....reminds me of some of Tamora Pierce's work. Also any of her books are good too.

Pride and Prejudice...haha this is the classic of course

His Dark Materials series....it's a fiction religious book and it's hard to elaborate without going into detail

Eragon or any other YA fiction....

I tried to pick books based on some of the preferences in the group, but some of them are long and would take a few months to read!

I'm totally down with this! I love talking about books with other people. My favorites historical fiction and romance novels and some chic lit. But I do stray from those genres occasionally. I don't mind re-reading books (I usually do so anyway) so my suggestions are The Other Boleyn Girl, Pleasure for Pleasure, and Good in Bed. There's some big girl empowerment in there! Can't wait!

I didn't post genres before so I'm posting again:

I usually read non-fiction and memoirs so I would love to expand my fiction readings. I normally read the stuff you'd find on the front shelves at Borders or Barnes & Noble (the newer authors and bestsellers) and the classics. But I'm interested in trying something new, so for me anything will really do. Except I'd prefer to stay away from westerns (yawn)!

haha. I don't know if there will some deep conversations about the books. I guess it depends on what's read, and we'll figure that out once everyone joins that wants to join!

update: after you post leave a few of the genres/types of books you like to read. If you like a lot, just list a few so I can get a general idea of what everyone might like! thanx!
