No medications at all. I'm active, but I wouldn't necessarily say athletic. I do briskly walk 3 miles a day 5 days a week, do a little yoga and work in the yard. Live in Florida so except for a couple weeks a year, I'm outside quite a bit. When I wear my fitbit, I generally get in 10,000 steps a day.

HDL of 161 is GREAT! (your numbers are perfect)

Are you on any medication for cholesterol, or are you athletic?

I had very high triglycerides levels before I start taking gemfibrozil up in the 1300's. After ten years with good blood pressure and taking gemfibrozil, I started to exercise again when my bp was through the roof. So I decided to ride my bike at least 3-4 times a week to lower my bp. I ride mostly hills around my house for about hour and didn't really expect to lose weight. I just wanted to lower my bp and glucose level.
Numbers from 10 months ago.
Tot Chol 182, Tri 183, LDL 113. HDL 32
Numbers from 3 weeks ago
159,99,94,45
I lost 20 something pounds to 170 lbs. (optimum weight for my height) and only started exercising in June. My bp drop slightly but still too high and glucose level went from 105 to 110.
I still need to lower blood pressure. My sister and father are taking insulin and I don't want to start.

I'm not happy with my latest numbers, which I just got today. The last time it was checked was February 2016, which wasn't all that great but better than they are today.

Total Cholesterol: 265 (up by 4)
HDL: 68 (down by 14)
LDL: 167 (up by 4)
Triglycerides: 150 (this is the kicker...up by 72!)

My triglycerides have never been that high before. I've made many changes during the past year, so I am a bit surprised by a couple of these numbers. I'm not on medication and fortunately, my doctor isn't one who's quick to put me on any. I know two things: I'm fighting heredity and I can get these lowered with diet and exercise. At one time I had my total cholesterol under 200, so I know it can be done. Just seems like it's harder now that I'm approaching the 50 mark. If anyone has any suggestions on lowering triglycerides, I'd love to hear them.

Jim, thanks for your info. I truly appreciate your taking time to respond. I had a different doc a few years ago try to put me on Provastin 40 mg per day it cramped my hands, feet and legs so bad I never took more than a few days. So the 10mg with the Simvastin and supplement CoQ10 I seem to be tolerating it much better. I am going to stick with it for the next few weeks until I have my Stress test and get the results. We will also do more lab work at that time so perhaps things will have changed. I really don't intend to stay on the statin for any longer than I feel I should.

It's all about doing something rather than nothing.

I have been taking 100mg CoQ10 for about four months - nothing remarkable. It is especially important to take CoQ10 if you are on statins as it helps offset the some of the reported side effects (muscle weakness, etc) of the statins. I am not a doctor and I don't play one on TV either so take what I am about to say with the appropriate caution. I think doctors are way too quick and eager to prescribe statins and that includes my doctor. I am looking for a new one now. Keep in mind it's how they were trained, so they really don't know any better. Based on all of my independent research the key lipid ratios are Triglycerides/HDL and Total/HDL. If your Trig/HDL is 2.0 or less AND your Tot/HLD is under 4.0 you are thought to have a healthy lipid profile. By my math you fit into both ratio very nicely. My lipid profile is 198 tot/53 HDL/120 Trig and my coronary calcium scan resulted in a score of 10 (400 is considered concerning) my doc wanted me to go on statins nonetheless. It's junk science. Do your homework and you'll learn Big Pharma has tjhe medical community hooked on these dubious pills that in many cases shouldn't even be prescribed. Again I am not a doctor but in 2017 there is far too much information available to take a doctor's word for it!

I visited a new internist. He wasn't as alarmed as I was but recommended I have a heart scan. Had that and revisited doc last week for results. Heart scan shows moderate risk for HA or stroke (198). He put me on Simvastin 10 mg per day and lowered my BP ,med back to just 10mg Lisinopril; he had added the HCTZ back to the Lisinopril the 1st time I visited but my BP had been bottoming out at 90/60 in afternoon. I am 63, 5'8 and weigh 150. My husband just completed 12 rounds of chemo since having his kidney removed in January so we feel sure the stress has affected my #'s in addition to genetics. Doc also recommended I take CoQ10. I am looking for any info and/or support. Do any of you take the CoQ10? If so how much, how often and when is the best time to take it. I have began going back to the gym and using the treadmill for now to insure I get at least 30 mins of movement. I sit at a desk all day. .

Hi I'm new to this group. My bloodwork was horrible and quite a huge shock to me. My doctor says it is genetics and diet will not help me as I rarely eat unhealthy fried foods, meat or dairy already. I have been put on medication and have been taking it for a couple weeks now. My doctor says he won't test again for 6 months. I don't think that is right, I may look for another doctor because of this.

Anyway here are my numbers.

hello, I'm new. I'm 37 and my results were a lot higher than i expected them to be. Doing what I can to make sure I live a healthy life for myself and family. As of last week, here are my results:
Total: 220
HDL: 40
TRI: 97
LDL: 161

I also need to lose about 50lb to get to a healthy weight for my body frame.
If you have any recipe recommendations that don't substitute fat for sugar or sodium, I'd love to see them!
If you live around Shoreline, WA and would like to start walking, I'd love a walking partner :)

Also - how do I get one of those cool weight trackers that y'all have?

Grammy Tink, I'm in the same boat. Last few years I've had high cholesterol (not really knew before) and this year I was put on meds. My doc said to exercise 30 every day. She said it didn't have to be high-impact aerobics but any 30 minutes of movement would do. I've taken to walking and hiking again, but that's getting boring because it's the same 5 routes. There are videos on here under Spark TV that have walking programs that can be tracked as well. She also said to cut back on the red meat and increase fish intake.

Read articles from reputable sites. Even here I've seen conflicting (maybe updated) information.

Good luck with your journey. All things in small doses.

Hi. I started on this site because my husband has high cholesterol, but last year mine was a little high so dr told me to eat healthy and exercise which I did most of time but couldn't lose any weight (I think my thyroid has something to do with it) but my test results was higher this year so I am now on med for it. Is there something I am doing wrong? My cholesterol is 256 LDL is 170. I go back in 3 weeks for blood work to see how taking med is helping. What can I do besides the pill to help get it lower? Any suggestion is appreciated.

I TAKE ONE STEP AT A TIME AND HOPE I KEEP GOING FORWARD

33 Days on the Crestor and my results are amazing! Really happy!

Total cholesterol was 339.... now 165
Triglycerides were 267..... now 108
HDL was 43.... now 41 (my new exercise program will help raise that)
LDL was 243.... now 102
Non-HDL was 296.... now 124

Just 33 days on the meds and that much difference. :)

Corkylee.... What don't you like about fish? The taste, texture...? I have a friend who hated fish until she had the fish I cook. Now she loves it. She stole all my fish recipes, lol. I pack a lot of flavor in it. Even my husband who never really liked fish says he loves it. I might be able to help you enjoy it more if I Know what you don't like about it.

CORKYLEE, that's great to start with! I think what worked for me is fiber: whole grain, whole wheat, lentil, millet, oats, even lots of potatoes, pineapples, string beans, etc are all good source of fiber for me. Soluble or insoluble fibers, both kinds help me to take out the waste in my body quicker than other kind of food.

Hope your numbers are improving!

thank you, EAGERCOMPETITOR and CORKYLEE!

regarding triglycerides, I personally think it's all about the food we are having... I'm mostly eating like vegetarian now but occasionally do go crazy with meat when I'm on the road... that is why the numbers from my last test wasn't good... that was right after a business trip when we went to nice restaurants ordering all kinds of steak and wine... it also screwed my liver functions too...

my vegetarian diet came from reading these stories: http://www.forksoverknives.com/category/su
ccess-stories/

I hope this helps and hoping to see good numbers from you soon!

My stats from Sept 2015:

Total Cholesterol: 260 (way too high)
Triglyceride: 49 (good)
HDL: 70 (good)
LDL: 180 (extremely high)

In spite of improving diet and exercise, my numbers are still too high, and have been for years. Thinking abut trying a statin.

I'll reach my goal weight in 2018, and I'm more than ready!

Total = 266
LDL 174

First bloodwork in 5 years. Didn't expect these numbers at all. Dr stressed better eating and exercise and went over a plan. She wants to avoid meds for me. I have renewed motivation to stay on track!

"There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results. - Kenneth Blanchard

Cholesterol: 209 (was 205 last time)
Trig: 120 (down from 153)
HDL: 72
LDL: 123

It's not really high, but if I don't start doing things right, it will be higher next time.

Looks like my HDL and LDL is the same as some of you but my cholesterol is lower, so does that make my hdl and ldl in a bad range?
