My total was really high 265

ldl 175 -less than100 is normal
hdl 74 -more than 60 is desirable
trig 80 -less than150 normal

vldl is 16 normal is 4-38

So other than my ldl I am okay with the rest because t is really good. The low trigs is why my dr doesn't push statins on me. I do take L-cartine, coq10 every day.

At physical in January, off cholesterol medicine, will have a follow-up in Mar on my readings, take blood test tomorrow. I recommitted to spark people on 10/4 and I've lost 16 lbs. I do at least 15 mins of cardio a day, stay within my calorie/carbs/fat range, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

When I was tested in August my cholesterol was 209. In November I tested at 179. This was after two weeks of exercise and better nutrition as well as taking red rice yeast supplements which my mother in law told me would help with lowering my cholesterol.

Amy it looks like you have what medical people call 'Metabolic Syndrome'. Your past three months blood sugar levels have been elevated so your A1C is a little elevated. We use to do a subraction method on the Cholesterol parts. Total Cholesterol minus the HDL results equals the LDL results. Not exactly accurate but gives a good idea. (from 1986 medical lab tech training manual, USAF) These days we have more specific tests. As for the Triglycerides being high too many fattening foods being consumed. Or you may be one of those people whose liver just makes too much Cholesterol and Triglycerides.

I know it is so hard to not switch starches for fats and fats for starches in our food. I am learning that my body Hates the fake Butters. I am much better off using the Real Stuff, I use less.

My Cholesterol is down to 225 from 270 and I am taking Niacin 500 mg twice a day. They want me to take Colestipol and my answer is No. I have only been taking this second pill of Niacin for 6 weeks. Give it some time to work! Ugh!!!!!

NO LDL as the Triglyceride were too high

Cholesterol was 276
Triglycerides were 426
HDL: 51.3
CHOL/HDL 5.4

A1C 6.2

Any ideas what all this means (although I have a pretty good idea since I've been fighting this for ten years) I am also a diabetic.

I went on a non processed food diet with exercise mid Apr '13. Test results are better and I didn't take any medication. This seems to indicate what they say about processed foods raising your triglycerides is true. Still have lots of work to do. I decided to supplement with time-released Niacin to see if that helps. I've read that Niacin lowers the bad and raises the good cholesterol. I have another cholesterol test in 3 months - so we'll see.

First, I had to convert my Canadian results to American results so I could compare.

Total Cholesterol - 239 Borderline high
Triglycerides - 44.8 Optimal (they have never been high)
HDL (the good) 47.9 Low (s/b above 50)
LDL (the bad) 170.2 High
TC/HDL 5 (s/b less than 5)

These results are about the same as the ones I had 4 months before I started to exercise and lose 15 pounds. I was so disappointed because my levels have always responded to exercise and diet before. However, it looks like my genetics are winning the game and like my mother I'm going to have to go on medication.

Especially, because I have a hs-CRP above 2 (Canadian Results) It's a test they do to measure inflammation in the body and apparently even if you have normal cholesterol levels if your hs-CRP result is above 2 they put you on Statins. Mine has never been below 3 and has been as high at 5.

The low triglycerides indicate to me that my lifestyle efforts, i.e. diet, exercise and not smoking are right on target. How much is that worth though if your genetics screw you?

One thing to be happy about is that I do seem to be winning the game against type 2 diabetes. My mom, my day, my maternal grandmother and grandfather have/had type 2. So far all my fasting glucose tests have been normal as well as the testing I do at home.

Doing well on meds. but my glucose is a notch above the max recommended. I am a couple of weeks into my exercise routine and I need to lose around 22 lbs. I hope to meet my goal and to avoid the need for cholesterol meds by doing diet and exercise. Thanks for the Spark people community for providing such a supportive web site. Ken

April, 2013 lab results:

Cholesterol 203
Trig 179
LDL 122
HDL 45

The doctor gave me a choice: medication or try to improve numbers with diet. Another set of lab tests for lipid panel, Vitamin D (very low), and TSH (thryroid as he changed dose and medication) in about 5 weeks.

Today I am walking about 2 inches off the floor! I received a phone call from my doctor today, giving me the results of my most recent blood draw for cholesterol. My cholesterol has almost always been high, once in a while it comes down, but the results this time are my BEST EVER!!

Total Cholesterol is 155
Triglycerides 94 Normal is less than 150 BIG YAY!!
HDL (Good Chol) 53 40-60 considered good, another BIG YAY!
LDL (BAD Chol) 83 Less than 100 is OPTIMAL, can I hear another BIG YAY!

I haven't stopped smiling since I hung up the phone! So, I celebrated! I went outside and took a quick 15 minute snow shoe hike around the yard, picking up lots of limbs and sticks that have been blown out of our trees in the past month and I feel AWESOME! I'm still smiling! Another 6" of snow possible later today and tonight, so more opportunity to snow shoe and cross country my cholesterol problems away.

I have been eating healthy since 1/13/13 and I have never felt better in my life. The exercise has become addictive, the food choices are endless, and the motivation, support, education and team concept of SparkPeople have all made my life so much better.

Thanks to all of you! Spark is the BEST!

I encourage all of you to keep Sparking! emoticon

This weekend I had my first fasting cholesterol panel since beginning the vegan lifestyle 2 months ago. Now, mind you, it's also been primarily unprocessed, very little sweet except whole fruits, and recently also trying to eliminate oils. So it's been a big push. And I'm SO pleased with the results! I brought my cholesterol down to 158! My goal is to be heart-attack-proof below 150. (My previous overall had been around 212 - 222.)

I've been reviewing my tests from 2010 to now, and I don't seem to have trouble with triglycerides. Always well below the 150 mg mark. Today's reading was 45. On 9/9 (about the time I started vegan seriously) it was 54.

LDL however, shows a big drop. It was 146 in April, 141 on 9/9 . . . . and 81 today!!! Yippeeee!!

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

Hurray!

Compare this to the results I posted as of June 2012:

Cholesterol 186
140 - 199 mg/dl
Triglycerides 120
20 - 150 mg/dl
High density lipoprotein (HDL) 49
40 - 60 mg/dl
Low density lipoprotein (LDL), Calculated 113
High See *1 65 - 100 mg/dl
Cholesterol/HDL ratio 3.8
See *2 0.0 - 4.9

LDLs are the only thing still high. No statins in my future.

I went to the Dr. on Thursday. My cholesterol is 345. He gave me a guide for the food I should avoid and the food I can eat. This should help me get back on track and get off the weight I want to lose.

I too just got my results back - Total cholesterol lowered 23 points from last reading in January. Great news to me.
Total Cholesterol - 212 (borderline high)
Triglyceride level - 79 (normal)
HDL Cholesterol - 50.0 (average)
LDL Cholesterol - 146 (borderline high risk)

SUSANE53 - Keep working, your numbers are right around where mine were last reading - you keep up the good work they may come down. emoticon

Got the results of my blood test yesterday.

The bad news: my total and LDL cholesterol are still very high.

The good news: I've managed to lower my total cholesterol by about 40 points, HDL went down 10, and LDL down about 40 as well! Dr. says he's pleased with my progress and not putting me on medication, even though my numbers are still pretty high. We'll check again in December and see how much more I'm able to lower the numbers. Genetics say I'll never have "perfect" cholesterol levels (thanks, Mom!), but I should be able to continue until I'm in a 'healthy range'.

The best news: the ratio is back into the healthy range at about 4! Triglycerides are up a bit, but still well within range (need to cut back on the fruit emoticon ).

All in all, a good report!

Hi CPresson, I'm very new to high colesterol, I just saw the dr today as a matter of fact. Have you shared the 'strict diet' that help you so much? I sure could use some help.
Thank you, and congratulations on your good numbers.

After losing 12% of my body weight over 3 months, and being committed to exercising at least 40 minutes/day during that period, the doctor let me try going off my ZOCOR (20 mg) as a trial. Five weeks later, the test is over. My numbers came back normal , total 170, for the first time in 15 years. I am thrilled! I won't stop monitoring, but it's given me a real incentive to keep going with the next 10%' and then the one after that.

Just joined this group yesterday. Due to an ultimatum from my doc in January, I worked hard sticking to a very strict diet for 2 months in an effort to get my cholesterol numbers down naturally, despite the knowledge that high cholesterol runs in my family and several of them, while otherwise healthy, have to take meds for their cholesterol. What I did worked, better than either I or the doc expected.

Results from 1/19/12 lab: TC=262, Tri=105, HDL=67, VLDL=21, LDL=174.

Results from just 2 months later on 3/19/12: TC=170, Tri=71, HDL=54, VLDL=14, LDL=102.

Almost normal on the LDL :) I joined this group so I can stay motivated to "keep doing what I'm doing," as the doc ordered and keep my numbers at a healthy level for the first time ever.

i'm curious on this one as well. I had a a health screen at work today and I totally forgot. Had a cup of coffee and wheat toast with penut butter about 3 hours prior. My cholesterol was horrible- 264. My family does have a history and I inquired and the nurse told me that it would only make a slight difference depending on what you ate....peanut butter..cheese..milk=bad. I am going to try new diet, excercise and go in to my regular doctor for a check up in a couple weeks. Still trying to read and see what steps I need to start taking.

Hmm, I actually do not know my HDL or LDL levels, I only know my total - 205 (or in Canada, it's 5.3).
I would like it to be under 120 (or 3).
I have a family history of high cholesterol and lost my Dad two years ago to heart disease, at the age of 63. He also lost three of his siblings before his passed. That is what led me to vegetarianism. I usually take in less than 50 mg of cholesterol a day, but still have higher cholesterol. It certainly is hereditary and I have read that cholesterol can increase when under stress. That makes sense too.

Anyhow, working on getting it lower, tonight's pizza isn't going to help... lol... but one step at a time!

Well I just had my bloodwork done, and the tests came back.
The thing that really bugs me massively is the hospital wants to put me on cholesterol lowering medication and I do not feel I need it.
Total is 227
LDL: 124
HDL 59

Now since my HDL's are so awesome and my LDL's aren't too bad (which I feel they will drop as I lose even more weight and exercise more) so I feel I do not need medication.
Really frustrating!

I don't know why it wouldn't be going down. Do you have heart disease in your family history? Have you changed your diet?

I've recently experienced a scary heart thing so they tested my cholesterol again. Between February 25 and March 19, my cholesterol went from 217 to 186, HDL from 61 to 50, chol/HDL ratio from 3.6 to 3.7, triglycerides from 47 to 162, and LDL from 147 to 119. The only difference was that on February 25 I was fasting and on March 19 I wasn't. Any ideas why the numbers would be so different after less than one month? Does not fasting affect it that much? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, just really surprised!

Just received my new lab results from this month. My original test was LDL 260 and HDL 84. After strict cholesterol dieting my new results are LDL 252 and HDL 85. I'm honestly disappointed with the results and I'm not sure what else to do. I am 22 years old, I weight 118 lbs and I workout intensely 6 days a week and am on my feet and moving all day since I am an elementary teacher. Why hasn't it gone down!?!?

Just had my labs done last week and scrolling down through this forum and comparing myself to others on here it seems like mine are really, really high. My doctor put me on Lipitor and I've been on that for 2 days now. I know what I really need to do is change my diet and exercise more. Here are my results:
Cholesterol: 254, Triglyceride: 98, HDL: 55, LDL: 179.

emoticon emoticon That's great BBennett!!!! Mine, not so great. Mine were
in May 2011: Chol 214 Trig 159 Hdl 42 Ldl 140
Feb. 24, 2012: Chol 249 Trig 138 Hdl 41 Ldl 180
My levels will be checked again in 2 months from Feb.24 so about April 24/May 1.
Right now I am not on meds, but she said she would put me on if they were not down.
In the past before May 2011 labs, I was able to lower cholesterol thru my diet & exercise,
but since before Christmas 2011, I wasn't consistent with my exercise and diet :(
Hopefully, with incorporating and joining raw food on sparks will help lower cholesterol numbers. So far have been trying to exercise bike at least 60 min/day. Want to also do
exercise videos and walk outside. Had a not so good day yesterday with food, ate a tomato sandwich with a few cheetos....had been trying to give up bread, LOVE bread.

Well, the results are in:
cholesterol 217
triglycerides 47
HDL 61
chol/HDL ratio 3.6
LDL 147
I am actually pleasantly surprised. They are better than expected. My cholesterol and LDL are still high, but my cholesterol actually went down 2. However, my LDL is up 7. We'll see what the doctor says.

I know you're right, but I'm way too stubborn for my own good. I've been determined to bring down my cholesterol numbers with diet and exercise and I'm afraid this time they won't be down. However, perhaps it is better to take medication in addition to diet and exercise to prevent heart disease? I just don't like taking anything unless I absolutely have to. Pat, I really appreciate the encouragement and good advice. I'll keep you posted when I get my results back. What medications are people taking and how has it helped and what are the side effects? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi BBENNETT,
Testing with all of your results staring at you has to be the best time to start. That was what happened with me, my wake up call was the type 2 diabetes. I never heard of i in England in my family so i never thought about it. When a good friend developed complications form it, I knew the time had come to make me and my health a priority.
I hope you can keep your health the priority not so much the scale. The scale stopped after 40 pounds and frankly I was angry and discouraged but I am persistent once I focused on MY priorities my body composition changed thanks to tracking and learning to love exercise. I did most of it outdoors to begin with just walking. Then I discovered walking DVD,s There are no difficult dance things to remember. I like the ones with a group , Leslie Sansonnes are my favourites and spark has lots of free videos you can look at and try at home. I hope you can do this because I feel great and years younger now. My doc says it's time to get tested again. I've been gaining weight since November and am so nervous. I thought about putting off the test until I had some time to eat better, exercise more, and lose some weight. However, it's for my health and not my vanity, so I guess I'll go to the lab in the morning and get it done. Wish me luck!

The note I just received from my Dr says:

Cholesterol under 200 is desirable
Cholesterol 240 and higher suggests high risk
Triglycerides under 150 is normal
Triglycerides 200 or over is high
HDL under 50 raises risk
HDL over 60 lowers risk
LDL under 100 is optimal
LDL over 160 is high

I hope this help!

I haven't heard of Dr Mecola, but thanks for the tip. I think I will check it out. I have been trying to lower/control my cholesterol number with diet & excercise (no medicine yet). The last check in December we still too high to suit me. Total 235. I need all the help I can get.

Does anyone know what a good average of cholesterol should actually be or does it differ person to person? Thanks-
Cindy

So frustrated - went for a check thinking my numbers HAD to be down, exercising 3 hrs a day, have lost over 90 lbs, definitely tracking my cholesterol on the nutrition tracker and it's usually under 50 each day - and i STILL went up! Dr took my Simvastatin up to 40 mg a day, but frustrated that I went up after working so hard to improve lifestyle! Of course, couldn't be happier about general health and fitness level...but was hoping for dramatically different result

It's never too late to become what you might have been
