I am allergic to shell fish and some fish, so my doctor has put me on Red Rice Yeast pills. Also, I have cut down my red meat (1 x every 2 weeks). I am eating beans more and more fruits and veggies. I have been really dieting and exercising, so I hope when my numbers are checked in 2 weeks they will be lower. I have really high triglycerides and low HDL.

Have you tried Krill Oil, there is not that after fishy taste. Also, the more I read the more it is clear that statins are more dangerous than good. My mother has taken them for several years now her feet are numb and her hands are starting to show signs. She has quite taking them and I told her to take Milk Thistle this is a natural way to clean the liver, which what I have read should also help Cholesterol levels, if what they say is true. Also a glass of red wine or concord juice each day will also benefit you as well.

Goofy725 - I hope that they are also talking to you about meds. With numbers
that high, it is usually more than just diet; it's usually genetic- familial hyperlipidemia. I'm sure that diet will help, but genetics almost always plays a large role in numbers that high - I hope they are monitoring you closely.

Sky2sky ,Have you ever tried OTC (over the counter)"Cholest-Off" check with your MD, go on line and read about it, it is a stanol derived from plant base. I also read if you put the fish oil capsules in the freezer, it helps with that burping or fishy taste, if you had a problem with that. Good luck I hope you find something that works.

Goofy725, I hope that your tryglcerides have gone down. I am not sure if it has anything to do with sugar levels or not, but it does have a lot to do with what you are eating (as well as anything else, food plays such a big part as well as hereditary genes)We have to exercise (walking is good)drink plenty of water. Cut back on red meats (eat leaner cuts..so I have been told. Good luck.

I have just went to doctor and found out my cholesterol is 450. He said my triglicerites (i am sure i misspelled that} were 650, and so high that can not separate the cholesterol numbers further (good and bad cholesterol). My sugar numbers were very good (testing for diabetes) I am being told the triglicerites is also a sugar number. Is this true? Not sure how to lower, but am trying to change eating habits. HELP!!

Have you experienced any side affects from the statins? I'm going in next week for a blood check. Dr ordered a "VAP" test along with my usual blood test...not sure what that tells. Going to research it tonight. Hoping my LDL is down from 159 or I may be taking one of the statins. I've been fighting it for two years. Tired of it! It's hard to be good with the diet all the time....especially when life gets stressful!
I've added MORE exercise to my routine....hoping this will do it for me!

My doctor told me the fish oil capsules she told me to take actually increases your HDL (the cholesterol you want to get higher) as well as lowering LDL (the one you want to lower), so it's really a good idea. You should talk to your doctor about what kinds of numbers s/he wants you to have, but here's an article about cholesterol that includes the numbers and what they mean:

www.everydayhealth.com/heart-disease
/c
holesterol/understanding/index.aspx

This is another one about triglycerides. Don't stop there, though. Research various sites and learn all you can about this. The more you know, the more you can help yourself and others.

I plan to start taking fish oil and hope to get my cholesterol down. Can someone explain to me the normals for tricycerides, HDL, cholesterol, LDL--and what are the differences? Also, I stopped taking flaxseed when it gave me bruises all over--I think it affects adversely the platelets in one's blood and I knew I didn't want that.

I work for 4 cardiologists and our senior cardiologist suggested CO Q10. My triglycerides are down to 103. I'm also on prevastatin and zetia. I resisted going on drugs but they far out weigh having high cholesterol and what that does to your heart. With some people it is hereditary and diet and exercise can't always lower it. Last visit to my PCP she was very pleased with all my numbers.

This may not be the answer you are looking for but I have been on them for a few years. I haven't had any trouble with it at all. I have always watched what I eat but since this seems to be a genetic issue for me I have to really watch it. I also have other major illnesses and haven't worried over the cholesterol much. I hope losing weight will help.
Advice use the "my nutrition" and watch the cholesterol levels. I notice I can't eat Egg and beef in the same day. (ect. higher cholesterol foods) It is all a balancing act.

okay, for 2yrs I resisted going on any statins(cholesterol meds), this time my labs were higher, and my MD pushed the issue, I just need some words of encouragement/support, suggestions on what foods to really avoid, and if anyone is on meds ( and have been for awhile)how are you dealing with it?

I was able to cut my triglycerides in half with diet and exercise (from 195 to 88). I found the oatmeal in the morning helped me eat less at lunch.

I also set an eating cutoff time for 8pm. I also eat my ice cream from a tea cup rather than a cereal bowl. :-)

You sound like you're certainly on the right track! I'm hoping that when I get mine checked again, my HDL is up and my triglycerides are down!! A little apprehensive since I'm trying to do it with diet, exercise and Cholestoff.

I hadn't heard that. My HDL has always been low (even before I started taking fish oil) at around 40. I do not take a garlic suppliment, but I do eat quite a bit of garlic :-).

I'm looking for ways to up my HDL number, but I don't know what will drive that up. So far, I've been focusing on not eating stupid things and doing some common sense eating (oatmeal and a banana for breakfast), coupled with exercise (I ran/jogged 4 miles for the first time in my life today!!!!), which has had a very good effect on my cholesterol, but now that I have lowered my LDL, I'm looking at ways to raise my HDL.

CD, I've read that fish oil in large amounts causes the HDL, the good, to drop and you should take garlic to counteract it. Do you do that or does it matter?

FISH OIL! I take 4g (4000mg) of fish oil per day (four big capsules). I have gotten advice from several different sources (my cardiologist, another doctor, and my own research). Check the Omega3 content of your vitamin. If it is 4g, then it should be fine. However, considering the size of my fish oil capsules, I doubt they could cram that much into one pill. Also, check to see what the source of the Omega3s is. If it is flaxseed, then I have been told (but have not independently verified) that flaxseed isn't absorbed into your bloodstream well--hence my preference for fish oil.

Good Luck!

Hi Richlady39;
Thank you for the explanation of your product.
I don't think that I can take it because the mede
I am taking now says not to take any other choesterol
med with it.
Like you, I will wait till I get my levels down a bit
to try it. I am currently juicing vegetables and
fruit. Stop taking meat so all this should help.
Thanks for this very imformative article.

Yes it was free the hospital trys to have one every Feb because it is heart month. The same hospital had Richard Simmons come to give a exercise lesson. We got to met him he is so sweet and understanding to all the people he talks to and energized boy can that man move and groove. I got worn out watching him emoticon He gave my daughter a hug and kiss ( she was 18 at the time) she just looked at me and grinned because he only shook my hand.. Brenda

Trying to eat healthy exercise daily, slow down my pace in life think positive and all in all get in Better Shape and Keep Heart healthy and enjoy the life God has given me.

Well at least it gives an idea of what the numbers are. Kariwitt does not mention her HDL #'s.

That's great to have the opportunity at a Health Fair and I bet it's free too!!!

Richlady, Yes, our health fair at a hospital does the finger prick and it is not a fasting one. But in my opinion it is away to get your #'s quick. when I get the finger prick test done I take those #'s with a grain of salt. I really do not count them . I trust the #'s from the Drs office and when I fast overnight and get it done in early A.M also so I can get home soon to eat breakfast emoticon Brenda

I've not heard of getting cholesterol results from just a finger prick. Anyone out there heard of this???

My question is was this a "fasting" blood test?

I've always been told that the best way to check for cholesterol levels is a "fasting blood" test - believe that means at several hours w/o having eaten anything. I usually do my tests early in the morning - about 8am - before I have anything to eat.

Dear Team,

I just had my cholesterol checked here at work, the health fair is today. My finger waas pricked and the results are as follows:
Total - 248 - high
LDL - 74 - within range
Ratio - 3.3 - low risk
Glucose - 99 - normal

I have been eating whole grain foods and eating fruits. Oatmeal for breakfast, exercising. Take Omega3 vitamin.
What else can I do to get this to come down?

Irene,
I liked this article... a simple and easy to understand explanation.

I did a research paper for a biology class once on this subject, because my dad has that rare genetic disorder where triglycerides play a major role in heart disease... (he has survived 5 major heartattacks, but his brothers and sisters weren't so lucky) and this article just reminded me and confirmed what I found out.

Thanks for sharing it!

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." thanks, Walter P. Chrysler. I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called

Thanks Irene for posting that link. I read the same article yesterday and 'thought' about posting it, but didn't get around to it. VERY informative and a lot of information there.
