Momma Little, 1. Do you have book, chapter, and verse stating what the Holy Spirit does among "people who have never even laid eyes on the Bible"? 2. I have never said that the Holy Spirit is not "alive in more ways than the words of the Bible," but only that He does not act directly on people (important distinction!), but acts on the human spirit through His Sword, the Bible (Eph 6:17).
SoundPreacher, I don't think I agree with you, but I understand where you are coming from.
The Holy Spirit works among people who have never even laid eyes on the Bible. I do agree that the Bible is Spirit filled, but I KNOW the Holy Spirit is alive in more ways than in the words of the Bible.
Is the Holy Spirit with us, as Christians? Absolutely, no doubt about that. I don't know of anybody who disputes that.
How does He act on us? That's an entirely different discussion, which is really what this thread began with. Everything that the Holy Spirit does for us today, the Bible is also described as doing for us.
The Holy Spirit never - repeat, never - acted directly on a person's spirit for the benefit of that person. People have always needed to listen to the Word of God, and have needed to choose to obey that. When Peter preached on Pentecost by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2), he mentioned that the gospel was for the Gentiles, also. It took a miracle in Acts 10 before he listened to his own words. The action on a person has always been through God's Word.
I'm sorry that I missed out on the beginning of this conversation. I am glad that your regular teacher came back and I agree with you and him. The Holy Spirit IS alive and is a special gift from God to us.
Yay! Our regular teacher this quarter came back, Coach Larry Hays from LCU, who is also one of the elders. He did not bring the subject up as a subject of friction, he just wove the Holy Spirit right into the teaching of the class today! He made it very clear where the Bible says the Holy Spirit is a gift to us from God, is alive and working in our lives and in our hearts! I sure was glad to see that get cleared up!
It wasn't our preacher (in fact, I believe he, too would disagree). It was a new Bible teacher in our class. I have not yet learned his name or if he was just a guest teacher. I did write on a card for the elders about the discussion, and I am interested to see what they say. Since this was something being taught to an entire class, I hope this will be cleared up with the entire class.
I am so glad that the Holy Spirit is alive and well and active. I need the Holy Spirit every day!
That's quite interesting, because what about the scriptures that show us the Holy Spirit is within each Christian?
"He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5).
"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).
"You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ" (Galatians 3: 26-27)...Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "‘Abba, Father’" (Galatians 4:6).
I am curious about what your preacher might have meant, because these passages show the Holy Spirit is given to each person at baptism.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. -- Romans 15:13
This is what our Bible teacher told the class this last Sunday at Greenlawn Church of Christ's Adults for Christ class. There was MUCH discussion and disagreement with him, but he would not back down. As for what I believe, if the Holy Spirit is limited to a book, even if it is inspired, HOW do we fight against the Devil who is very alive and well??? I don't know where his teaching came from, but I'd love to hear what you think about it... Thanks!
