My favorite go-to's are: Weight Watcher string cheese, fresh pineapple, and Dannon light yogurt...these are my evening snack choices. During the day I like to munch on some Peach salsa and unsalted tortilla chips.

this is a good topic to start using again ...

these days i still tend to snack on spoonful here and there of fat free cottage cheese (but sodium content adds up quick)

some ppl do almonds or nuts (but calories and fat add up quick)

i like avocado or banana (dietician said half of each is technically a serving but i usually eat the whole thing but then cut back other places throughout the day)

i like string cheese (very fun food and good portion size)

as are the yogurt cups

what snacks do you all like?

I like to keep cut-up veggies in the fridge ready for snacking. For my sweet tooth I do indulge in Honey Bunches of Oats Tropical dry cereal in the evenings from time to time. I also try to make it a habit of buying low-fat/calorie snacks to keep on hand just for me. I drink lots of water flavored with lemon and low-cal drink mixes to keep from getting bored with just plain water.

I find fruits often help with my sweet tooth. Especially grapes. Dried pineapple if you get the natural kind. I also like experimenting with baking healthy versions of desserts.

For savory, I like nuts though I have to be careful not to go overboard.

What's kind of screwy with me is that I've almost avoided carbs for a few years...mainly because I eat gluten free and it's so darn expensive to find anything that is on sale or under $7 (for a loaf of bread). So I have a hard time meeting carb requirements in the realm of potatoes, brown rice, chickpeas..
I also have an aversion to meat. Some days it's alright others I virtually vomit from the mere thought of it. I usually have a protein shake for dinner on week nights.
I do binge off and on on weekends, though for me a binge is usually around 500 calories max (usually some potato chips) and then I feel absolutely disgusting and I don't do it for another week.
But in the evenings my husband is always munching on something and I sometimes feel like I should as well. Monkey see, monkey do! What I did last night was stick with fruit and a few nuts and it seemed to be better.
I am going to try having a long bath in the evenings and look after myself. I haven't done a hair treatment in a while, so I'd like to get back into the habit of doing it once a week.

Using a Brita filter is a good idea if u have city tap water, I think. If u DONT have IBS, fiber is a good way to fill up. Eating veggies at night which is usually when the snacking bug bites, is a good way to fill up. They're fibrous and full of water too so u feel fuller. Remind me not to go to that steakhouse. We don't have that up here anyway... emoticon

Kim is right too, the healthier u come to eat everyday, the less unhealthy snacking you will do. I think I eat pretty healthy. I stay in (sometimes below which is not always good) my ranges so I don't always get the snack bug but when I do, it's at night and it's for carbs. MY trick? DONT buy the fatty stuff u know will sabatoge your hard days work. I no longer keep chips in my house at all. Not big on sweets so..Now I munch on a piece of turkey or roll up turkey in a wrap with lettuce, tomato and no fat ranch with beans (sometimes) other times I'll use a wrap with ham and salsa. Those two things are SUPER filling and low in cals and if u add beans to it and salsa...high in protein. Def keeps u full.

Just a couple thoughts....

i don't intake enough fiber, vitamin D, iron, and calcium. i've been searching articles trying to find ways I can incorporate those things into my food choices. i don't do milk but the Lactaid i do use for cereal and such is vit A&D and calcium fortified. over the years i've pretty much stopped eating fiber b/c i always felt it make my IBS worse but it looks like maybe that's the cause of the IBS b/c I don't get any fiber. ... i bought some flax seeds yesterday at the store .. i'm going to try those in a smoothie.

i avoid unhealthy snacking usually b/c it doesn't taste good to me anymore. mom wanted to try Logan's steakhouse whatever special of steak & lobster so we went there Thurs to eat. at first glance it's like a Texas Roadhouse which is awesome. however it really is just peanut dusty/dirty everywhere, disgusting overpriced grease dripping bland food. the rolls were smothered in lard or something to make them glisten. the tiny burnt wings literally dripped grease as I was eating them... ugh. i could go on but it's making me sick.

i drink a ton of water. always have. it took me a LONG while to transition from awesome natural well water where I lived in the country to city water. it was disgusting to me. i was quite the connoisseur of water. it takes time to get used to. just like we all had to get used to soda and juice and such... it takes time and patience. now yes sometimes tap water isnt' healthy or treated very well so then a Brita filter on the tap is quite helpful. one place i lived in Pasadena was so bad that I paid for Arrowhead water delivery with the hot/cold dispenser. it was worth it.

Thought maybe we as a team could help each other with the dreaded unhealthy snacking routines we can sometimes succumb to. I know myself could definately use some ideas. Do u tend to overdue it on carbs? Trouble meeting protein? I know there's lots of info on Spark about this topic, but what do YOU do? What keeps you from unhealthy snacking? Are you looking for advice too?

I know for myself, I drink alot of water and that does the trick sometimes but sometimes those unhealthy habits rear their head (usually carbs).

Would love the input on what works for you!

With so many of us on meds that don't help with weight loss and often make us hungry, thought this would be a good topic for us to talk about and try to help each other with.

Look forward to responses!

Courtney
