My GP is doing ok now. I've been on this combo for a while now, but I always attenuate to what I'm on sooner or later and that's when the fun begins. AT that point I'm hoping he has someone he can refer me to

To me that is not a good doctor...but then I feel differently about Medicine...and the doctors want to make their money that Medicare pays such a small rate. I just feel there has got to be a better way....thankfully, my p doc takes Medicare. He is a geriatric Pdoc. I just made it into his age group...

Well, he was a good psychiatrist until he dropped me a few months ago because he decided he didn't want to care for medicare patients (I'm on permanent disability thanks to my BP). So now it's me and my relatively new GP. He's doing his best and so far I'm treading water with the meds I have. I change dosages occasionally to suit my needs, but if I need a big change (and at some point I will, knowing my history) I'll have to find another psychiatrist.

After working for 40 years as a nurse in acute care facilities and 2.5 years with acutely psychotic medical surgical patients, I have found that very few people understand the psychotic or bipolar person nor do they know how to treat them. That includes psychiatrists...I am not a fan of physicians in general. I was able to diagnose my MS when. I was in my 30's. There were no treatments then and my symptoms were from RRMS so they would go away just as the work up would really get under way...not to mention the mentality of male physicians toward me as a woman...I continued to work and raise my family...some months were good and some weren't...I also had Reynaud's phenomena. I thought that moving to Florida would stop that...it just made my RRMS worse and the Reynaud's with it....

I'm glad you finally found a good psychiatrist. Some times you have to go through a couple of doctors to get one who will help you. Just take it one step at a time...

I think in my case anyway, it was a GP who was in over his head and didn't want to admit it. I had to go through two psychiatrists on my own before I found one who would listen to my concerns about being bipolar. I don't think that GP is even practicing around here anymore

Doctors should not be yelling at their patients at all! That' saw hen you need to change doctors...they are supposed to find out why there is a weight gain...journal your food is the number one thing a doctor should tell you...so he can see what you are eating...and he has to know the medications you are on...
The medications cause carbohydrate cravings which are almost impossible for the person to ignore...it's you who puts the food in your mouth...but it's almost done like a robot or someone else controlling you...
I, too, went to a psychiatrist...Not so much for weight gain, but for medication management and he is great and I feel my healthiest. That's important because I have MS...and they feel that's' where my bipolar issues came from...either way I am bipolar and proud of it...I have a passion for life, I feel more deeply...the only thing I don't care for is the post winter holiday blues which are deep...but having the PDoc has helped...I have someone to turn to...

I was an RN so if anyone needs some help with something I might be able to help. if I don't know I will tell you....hugs to all!

When I read about your doctor getting on your case about losing weight, it brought not so good memories back to me. Since I was initially misdiagnosed with straight depression, my family doctor prescribed anti-depressants and increased doses or changed around meds willy-nilly as I wasn't getting better. Meanwhile, the scale was going up and up and he was really on my case about the weight. I mean yelling at me about it, especially because of back and joint issues I have. I did eventually switch to a different family doctor because of that, plus I was able to start seeing a psychiatrist for med management. I continued to gain weight, but at least I had doctors that understood the why. So if you're thinking about switching doctors, it might be the right thing to do for you. Listen to your instinct. I wish I had done it sooner when I first started having my doubts

Believe me...you weren't ranting...you were totally frustrated. I know that feeling very well. I only take Cymbalta now. I had to cut out the antihistamines unless absolutely necessary...

I think the mountain bike sounds like a great idea. It is always good to take anger and turn it in to something helpful to ourselves...

I went to the doctor yesterday very smug int the fact that I had cut my carbs way down and my A1C would go down...it went up! Officially into diabetic numbers...she says it is because I am not doing cardiovascular exercises...I have to the gym..I'm taking my anger and turning it into gym time! emoticon and I do want to loose more weight...I've lost 6 lbs so far...I just want to loose 14 lb more and I will be happy...I'm not looking to be a skinny model and I bought some clothing I really like ....

Go for that Bike! emoticon

Thanks for replying to my rant. I will try to eat more protein and complex carbs. I bought some Fiber 1 bars so maybe that will help. Also I was thinking of getting my mountain bike out again. Maybe my Dr. has made me so mad to give me the drive to win the battle of the buldge.

Everybody knows that taking certain medications will "make you gain weight"...this is not exactly the right wording...what actually happens is the meds make you seriously crave carbs...you eat a carb and your pancreas puts out insulin which makes you crave carbs and 99 % of the time it's a carb with a a Glycemic Index that makes it enter the blood stream quickly...not gradually...and if you are older you could be insulin resistant so the carbs you are eating are not being used as energy...they are being converted to fat which is deposited where your body likes to deposit fat. So you are constantly hungry and you are trying not to eat, but darn those M&M's couldn't hurt....so that's how the weight goes on.... I can' take antihistamines like Benedryl, xyzal or Singulair on a daily basis as they cause such cravings..and I gained weight. when I stopped them the cravings went away...I can feel the cravings leave...
It's not just psychotropic drugs that cause the cravings...so be aware of what you are taking. if you are a chocolate lover like me look for things that have the taste, but not the carbs...protein bars, vitamiffins, stuff like that....hope this all makes sense...

It's been awhile since I posted so I am still on lithium and am taking klonipin as well. I saw my Dr. Today and he got on my case repeatedly saying "you need to lose weight" like a broken record. I don"t feel like starving myself cuz that seems to be the only way to lose the pounds. I'm too tired to work out too. I felt like finding a new Dr. For the rest of the day I've been really sad that this society places so much value on having a skinny body.

Hi! I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I also gained 60 plus pounds after being on abilify. My doctor decided to switch meds. I have now lost 50 of the 60 lbs. The fact is the meds do make me much more hungry than without them but it's not worth being off them. We can lose weight just much, much slower than some. Filling foods help like lots of protein and fiber. Of course this is just what is working for me. The medication I'm on now seems to allow me to gradually lose the weight but increased my cholesterol to 246. This number is after losing the weight! I wish you luck and please know you are not alone in this struggle. You will lose it!

I am on Abilify right now for Bipolar and also Hypothyroid medication. I have gained 60 LB since this time last year. I had a breakdown after my mother died and I stopped eating from October 2013 - April 2013. I lost weight and got down to 160 (from 180). After being hospitalized in October 2012 and then again June 2013 I started feeling better. I got off of Cymbalta and on to Abilify per the doctor's orders. I started eating again and I was hungry all the time.

I think it's a combination of medication and the breakdown that caused the weight gain. I was also eating very poorly and very often.

I am so tired of having an overweight body. I have no energy, irregular periods, high triglycerides (in the 300's), cholesterol is 225, and I don't like the way I look.

Abilify and Lithium did make me gain weight. Both stopped working for me so I was taken off of them.

It's hard to find a med that doesn't make you gain. Lamictal helped me lose weight, but I had a reaction and was taken off of that too.

Now I'm now on Latuda. It does make you gain weight. The best thing I've done is snack on healthy foods. Nuts, fruit, dried fruit, no sugar ice pops. Cleared the house of all sweets and cakes etc. It's easy when you live alone.

Although I've been known to go in search of sweets. Making trips to the local store just to get a sugar fix, which is what I crave.

You can try filling up on liquids when the urge comes. Try thinking, am I hungry or am I thirsty? And try a large glass of cold lemon water first. That should help.

Or try making some low sugar/ treats for yourself. Look up diabetic recipes for desserts and use them as your satisfiers.

I eat peanuts and dried fruit. Got a huge bag of Kirkland Nuts and Fruit from Costco's as well as nuts.

Sometimes a spoonful of peanut butter will do the trick.

Try and concentrate on your mood, keep your house as junk food free as possible and find healthy snacks. I find denying myself only makes it worse.

Good luck.

I understand about the Abilify. I, too, am taking it, and struggling like crazy with my weight. It will take me two weeks to lose .2 lbs (if I am lucky) I do not tolerate medications well, and it is something I must weigh (no pun intended) carefully. My moods have been as stable as they ever get and so far I can take it without any side effects. I hold my breath until I do. Meanwhile I am working on an attitude adjustment, and evaluating my priorities.
I hope you find something which works for you and not against. emoticon

I'm on abilify right now and I CANNOT lose my holiday weight to save my life. It's been really depressing me. I see the psychiatrist on monday and want to get back on Latuda that I know I can lose weight on cuz I was on it most of last year. I didn't think it was doing a lot for me, but I feel the same on Latuda as I do on abilify and maybe this is just as good as it gets? I even called the pharmacy...both would cost me 25 bucks so I'd rather have the one I don't fight against weight-wise.

Seroquel was the weight gainer for me. 40 lbs. in two months. After years of trying other medications and combinations my doc put me back on the Seroquel. This time she paired it with Wellbutrin and phentermine. It's working great! I'm not gaining weight, but I haven't been able to lose any either. Hopefully this site can help.

I can't take Topamax--when I was on it my short term memory went out the widow and I was always losing things and forgetting important appointments. I was getting a tremor in my right hand. I was on it all of two weeks before this started happening so I don't really know if it was good for weight loss or not. I would rather be crazy than fat (my family would rather I was fat than crazy) but I'd rather be fat than have Alzheimer's and Parkinson's symptoms. I have been on lithium now for about 3 years and in that time I have gradually put on 35 lbs. My bipolar is pretty well under control. In fact I am pretty mellow and I don't want to screw around with my meds. If I hadn't been exercising regularly and eating decently, the weight gain would probably be much more. I am getting a lot more serious about what I put in mouth and continuing to get regular exercise. I am hoping for a modest weight loss this year.

I can use some motivation, if anyone is willing to help. I'm currently on wellbutrin, 1500mg of depakote, and 50mg of seroquel. I just had my dr's appointment and realized over the past few months I not only put back on the few pounds I had lost, but an additional few. I loved the topamax because it KILLED my appetite, however it didn't really help my mood and made me fuzzy. Since I started the seroquel is when I put on most of my weight, I am STARVING all the time, but it is the only thing that has actually stabilized me and let me sleep (we tried at least a half dozen others with no success). For several months I was very very good at watching what I was eating, making my food from fresh ingredients, exercising, and using all of my trackers. The weight came off very slowly, then stopped all together. I admit, I gave up, and then started stress eating. This drs appointment was a huge wake up call, I CANNOT continue like this anymore. I am tired of being constantly hungry, tired of giving in to that hunger, and tired of feeling like a fat lump. I have a back issue from a year and a half ago when I fell off my stairs, and I know the extra weight is only making it worse, but it also limits what I can do without pain. Anyone have any words of advice, encouragement, etc? I'm moving in two weeks, and combined with a new work schedule, want to make a fresh start, and kick this weight once and for all.

annehoo, I took topamax, and after a couple years got off of it. The weight gain (70 pounds) in that time may have been a combination of the topamax and the zyprexa I was on. I lost all of it in a year after getting off both of them. I found that Geodon is great, no side effects, no weight gain and it kept me out of the hospital for 7 years, but it is super expensive. I had to get off of it after 8 years because my new insurance has a deductible for meds, which I've always had co-pays. Now I'm on resperidol and after just two months, I have gained weight. quite a bit. 10 pounds. I am not a happy woman. I see the dr on Tuesday and will get weighed and make a request to get off it. Problem is I'm having some depression, still over these last couple of months.

AnnieHoo... I just started Topamax. I am starting very slowly and watching my calorie intake until it starts to work ... I have heard a lot of bad things about it too but I am a binge eater and desperate, everyone is different on it they say , so who knows if it will work or not. I am desperate enough to give it a try, I need to get a jump start on these pounds or I will go crazier than when off of my meds.

I would love to lose 150 lbs and that would take me down to 140 lbs. I don't know if that is possible with the help of this medication but I will at least try it.

Wow!!! I have been bipolar since the get go and have been on over 20 different medications, some included were lithium, epival, abilify, seriquell, trazidone, clonazipam, lorazepam, Effexor,Paxil, and so on. I was married in jan 2000, and since then I have gained 120lbs. It is disgusting what some of the meds do to you, but it is a choice to see if you can live with your level of instability,or if you need mood stabilizers.

Finally I am off all medication except trazidone, to help me sleep at night. It has been my personal experience that almost all mood stabilizers, and anti depressants can lead to weight gain. You have to be aware of that fact, but it doesn't mean that you can't drastically minimize the effects. If I were regularly exercising then it would have been an improvement to the situation. Also my love of carbs as sugar were also the doom!

I am really excited to finally be in a position to take control of my own life, by diet exercise and making a lifestyle change and working with people on this site then I truly believe that we can all meet with success. Also never underestimate the power of fulfilling your spiritual side because that can also add to inner peace. Find what works for you and make time each week to do something satisfying.

any drug can mess up your mind ... each person is different .. each person will have a different reaction to anything ... therefore that makes it difficult to compare notes.

only you can research and weigh the pros and cons and ask questions of your doctor ... have a game plan in mind in case something goes funky or bad .. don't just leave it to the wind

My doctor wants me to add Topamax to my med cocktail to counteract all the weight-gaining drugs I take. Someone told me it was the California drug - makes you skinny and dumb! I don't want to lose cognitive function just to lose weight (although it's tempting). Have any of you heard about the drug and if it really messes up your mind?

smcdonald, that is a good start. I started out at 272 and know the weight can come off while on meds. I would try some strength training and keep in mind your body gets used exercise so switch up what you do ever so often. I have done it all with DVDs and walking/jogging around my neighborhood.

healthier for you nutrition will do wonders ... and whatever exericise you will do and/or enjoy is the one that's going to work for you to keep pounds off

some start with walking (i started less than quarter mile at a time and sometimes would have to huff and puff and call mom to pick me up ... that's turned into 3 miles at a time including hills)

some like running

some like biking .. or weight lifting ... or bowling ... or stretching/yoga/pilates

again find something you enjoy and it can work

I am on Depakote (500 mg) and Olanzapine or Zyprexa 2.5 mg. The meds are working for me but I also attest to the fact that so does exercise and eating right. The weight will come off if you do the latter two. Exercise is known to release endorphins in the brain which relate to our moods. My last hospitalization and manic episode was 1994. Since losing 30 lbs in 2012 and walking almost every day I have never felt better mentally.

Anything worthwhile takes effort..never give up.

Hello all!!! I have had anxiety since elementary school, depression since middle school, and they began whispering bipolar in high school but I didn't accept that until I was 23. My mom put me on antidepressants when I was 14. I have never been able to get off them and fear my brain developed with the med doing the job for it. I have been on many antidepressants, Buspar, and 2 meds for bipolar. Right now I take 10mg Zyprexa, 40mg Celexa, and 50mg Lamictal. I gained weight until 2 years ago when I got the right med cocktail. I was 272lbs and diagnosed as type 2 diabetic in August 2011. I am now 53lbs down and with 59lbs to go and my diabetes is in remission. I definitely believe in being your own advocate and going with your gut. Dealing with mental health is very scary. I suffered a psychotic break in 2008 from Lamotrigine, but I didn't give up. You are worth the effort!!!

just keep in mind there are other meds besides lithium ... do some research with and without your doc (aka at home and not just in their office) ... about alternatives in case one day you decide you want to feel different, think different, look different, etc ... only you can tell you how you really feel and only you can decide if you're truly comfortable with you

God bless you and good luck. I am on lithium only and that is too much. I lost 47 lbs when I wasn't on anything for 2 years. Now back on meds for 2.5 years, 20 lbs have crept back on despite watching what I eat and exercising daily. My husband and family refuse to put up with me when I am unmedicated and the only reason I do the psychiatric thing at all is to please them. Sometimes I feel like running away. If I am bouncing off the walls all alone who the hell is going to notice or care? Sigh...Just another fantasy.

i came to the same/similar conclusion about myself .. had been doing the med roulette routine for a decade ... and it was getting me worse and worse especially with the medical staff i had available here where i was supposed to live/recover.

but for the whole team .. keep in mind . EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT .. you MUST DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU ... and we ALL REACT DIFFERENTLY TO EVERY MED/FOOD/ACTIVITY

it is a LOT of trial and error unfortunately ... don't give anyone the power (including yourself and bipolar or any other diagnosis) to take away your livelihood and zest for life!!

i am anti med!!!!! in 2005 i trusted a doc, and was given, prozac, geodon, trazadone, and well butrin, among others.....for 6 yeras he watched me gain 180lbs and sleep almost close to 20 hours a day...i was open and honest, his answer was always more pills......i fell very hard with a personal situation in my life, and almost died......as of jan this year i stopped seeing him, and quit all the meds.....i changed fam doc, saw her, and she told me i was lucky to even be alive, with all the drugs in my system......ive been paying for all those pills for months now......i have finally reached a detox point of clean stystem and i will learn to live life natural...being bipolar.....if you love me, youll stand by me, if not ....then i dont need you in my life...thats my frame of mind....im terrified of meds now......

i agree with talking to the doc .. or at least intake nurse if they have one .... those aren't good symptoms or side effects to put up with

It can take a long time to get meds right, maybe you want to talk to your doctor about these new symptoms--sounds pretty serious.

I was just diagnosed 3 months ago, but have put on 30 lbs since. I only take Lamictal 400 mg right now. But I cry easily and can snap at people quickly. I have recently been experiencing some brain fog and forgetting things.

I have been on Abilify-thorazine-cymbalta-topamax-ativan since March, and only when the DR increased the Abilify to 10 mg a day did I gain 20 lb of water weight in a week. I now have to be on a diuretic, but will gladly do it, because my moods are more stable than they have been in a long time.
I was on Depakote, lithium, seroquel, zyprexa and tegretol at various times, they all caused weight gain for me, neurontin, lamictal and topamax did not. I really do well with the topamax and wish I could be on a higher dose, but if I go any higher than 200 mg I have problems finding the right words to say. Some say Topamax actually makes you lose weight, I don't know. All I know is I'm stuck at 180 and it's time to add exercise.

Apparently, adding topamax to depakote makes the food cravings go away, or at least lessens them. But Topamax by itself has been found to be only marginally effective for bipolar, if what I am reading is correct.

Hope this is helpful.
Margie

OMG! I do not even know where to start. Probably at the beginning, when I first got diagnosed last year in july, the dr put me on Depakote ER, and I gained 40 lbs in a month. When I went back in to see him, he changed my mood stabilizer to Seroquel 400mg a day, so I was still gaining weight. I was on Seroquel for about 9 months and now weigh 250ish. I re-established my care at the same clinic and the dr put me on Saphris (which is a life saver btw) and I haven't had the intense cravings with it, but it is sedating like seroquel. I was recently voluntarily admitted into a psych ward and the dr increased my Saphris, put me on Tegretol, Doxepin and Klonipin. The medicine combination seems to work and I don't have super cravings anymore, so now, my main goal is to lose all the weight that I gained from being on the Depakote and Seroquel. I hope this helps someone!

I have been on a low dose (2 to 5mg) o Abilify since March, Just increased to 10mg. I have not noticed a weight increase. I also take Thorazine, Cymbalta, Topamax and Ativan. I can only take 200 mg of topamax per day or I have a hard time expressing my words.

I have been thinking about going back on lithium for its neuroprotective effect, but need to run that by my docs--Lithium definitely makes me gain.

Sincerely
Ayla

i've noticed memory loss/failure is kind of common among those of us with mental illness. lately i've been able to remember more things than ever but it was a long struggle of a journey off meds.

as for advocare .. i've seen people lose weight quickly but quite honestly unless you're willing to stay on it uhm.. forever .. you really need to learn how to pick and fix better/healthier real foods instead of replacement shakes. that's what SP is here for .. to give information on healthy choices. there have been lots of studies that ppl who focus on weight loss first and lifestyle change along the way or secondary tend to gain back the weight. and those that focused on maintenance and lifestyle first then weight loss kept it off longer and lost more.

well, I was on Abilify (atypical anto-psychotic) to boost my mood stabalizer (Lamotrogine). Well when I first went on it, it of course said it "might" cause weight gain. Most antipsychotics do, however it was a lesser side effect. 60 lbs later (diet and exercise trying to lose) I storm into my Psychiatrist's office with an article - cant remember where - that stated Abilify causes "astonishing" weight gain. Se all along I was gaining..at one point I started refusing to get on the scale. I had had enough of her saying oh just exercise more.. she came clean about the Abilify (prior to me storming in pissed off) sorry.. sometimes my brain works backwards.. anyway I refused to take it. Period. Risky I know but I was so mad at her, what kind of a Dr. knowingly puts an eating disordered patient on something they know will gain weight!

Off it.. been 2 months - takes a while to get out of your system. So far I have lost 17lbs 10 of that prior to Advocare - I am on day 4 and am down started at 191 am now 183.. Following it to a T. Havent been able to exercise yet.. in a low.. but Ill get there.

thats my story.. aww crap I always try to preface my words with "have I told you this before" I have pretty severe memory issues.. doing the best I can.. carry a notepad with me at all times.. meh. what can you do?

i've noticed protein seems to give me a little boost of feel-good energy whereas carbs make me feel sluggish. i've pretty much stopped eating bread and rolls and dumplings .. that kind of thing. occasionally if i'm eating out i'll enjoy a roll or something but not a whole basket like i used to. most of the changes i've gradually made are to help my IBS not be such a pain.

thanks for the sage tips Kimberly. I did notice on the nutrition tracker that i consume more carbs than protein. So i will take your suggestions to heart and try to do better in my food choices and exercise more too. Thanks a bunch. Blessed be.....

it might be time to evaluate the healthy-ness of the food you are eating. for an easy example i didn't usually eat too many calories but i was eating things like Oscar Mayer bologna. well after many months on here and nothing to lose but weight i learned about nutrition quality and found there was turkey bologna with way lower sodium and lower fat content etc ... i bought one of each and weaned my way over to just the turkey variety. that was months ago. now i don't even buy it at all. i don't miss it.

i did add things like avocado and brown rice and have cut way back on Lean Pockets (which are healthier and tastier than Hot Pockets) ... and add flaxseed to some items ... i've had great luck with things like that ...

long time ago (19 years) i went from six or more 16oz Pepsi bottles a day to none. and i've never really liked greasy and salty fast food so that isn't an issue for me. same with salad dressings and mayo .. never liked 'em. but they def need to be in moderation if you do like them.

i still indulge in a Monster or Sunkist every now and then. i just finished eating an ice cream bar. and yesterday I had some buffalo chicken wyngz. so i'm not entirely all healthy but it's pretty much within moderation. if i eat too much i feel gross and sick and several other health problems play a significant role. i'm far from consistent with my exercise .. yea i know i'm on a slippery slope with all this passiveness .. i've lost motivation or something ... i'm lower weight now and i could still go another 20 or so pounds but i'm not in a hurry to do so. i lack conviction and discipline so i opt for a longer journey type methodology.

i think my point is pay attention to what you're eating.. not just calorie intake ... but sodium and calcium and hydration .. figure out what works for you ... salads and veggies NEVER are appetizing to me so I'm never going to go full-veggie-exercise-a-holic .. i wouldn't make it more than a couple of days before i got bored.

hi everyone. I'm new here but wanted to first congratulate everyone on their respective journey with bipolar disorder and with their weight loss. I've learned a lot by reading your entries. Thanks. I'm not on Lithium, I'm on Latuda 80 mg, being weaned off Risperidone from 4 mg to now 3 mg and am also taking sertraline 100 mg and lorazepam 1 mg. I was told my 70 lb weight gain and high cholesterol were from the meds, Risperidone in particular; hence the weaning off. I have lowered my caloric intake according to the nutrition tracker and though I exercise, I'm not always consistent-some days I do 10 minutes of walking other days I'll do 45 minutes of hip hop abs. But I'm not losing and I'm frustrated. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Blessings.....

i've never had a good reaction with lithium. usually feel trapped in my own body and numb. even when i was up to 1200mg per day it wasn't at a therapeutic level and did me no good. i've been on various doses of it a couple of times in my career but i never stayed on it more than a couple months at a time. unfortunately i can't help much more than that. i'd say be open and honest with your doc. talk through the benefits versus risks. if it makes you feel better and whole then stay on it and find out ways to deal with the effects. if it isn't helping explain all of it to the doc and pick a different med. no matter what it's a struggle. there isn't a magic pill in the world that will level out mental health AND allow you to lose weight easily. it's not easy losing weight without meds so with is just a different aspect to tackle.

Hello, I noticed that no one has been on this thread in like a month. So I wonder if anyone will respond...but I will ask for help anyway. I have been on bipolar and antidepressant meds for over a year now. I've noticed that from my Lithium, it makes me bloated all the time. Like I am retaining water. The drug info on it said not to go on a low sodium diet or to take water pills.
I am so sick of my stomach bloat. That's the only bad side effect I've noticed, besides the fact that it also states that Lithium will make it harder to lose weight. I feel like I am fighting an uphill battle. Has anyone else noticed this from their Lithium also? I also forgot to mention that I religiously carry around my water bottle and drink like 100oz of water a/day.

Hi! I have been dealing with metal health meds since I was 14, though only since I was in my early 20's with bipolar meds. So far the only drug that has really made me gain weight was Zyprexa and it was quite a bit. I think it even lead to being diagnosed with diabetes. That was 2 years ago in August. I have lost 31lbs since then and my diabetes has been in remission for over a year. I got all the way up to 272 before I really paid attention. I am still on the Zyprexa and have been for 5 years. It is possible to lose the weight!!! Don't give up. It might be hard and you might have to tweek it more often than those not on the meds, but it's worth the effort. My way of losing weight has been to really watch my sat fat intake and my calories. Working out helps a lot on many levels. But def start out with baby steps and make sure you are eating the right balance calories for what you are burning. I never thought about that I used to not eat enough for what I was burning and would out after 2 months. Hope that helps someone! :o)

I'm new here, but in the past year, my weight has fluctuated by almost 40 lbs. I started at about 270 after quitting smoking. Initially I was placed on topamax, which helped me lose 40lb in a short time because it completely killed my appetite. Unfortunately, it did nothing to stabilize me, and as they raised my dose I learned why they call it dopamax. Since then I'm taking 1500mg of depakote, on which I gained back those 40lbs. I was just started on seroquil which has actually helped me not be starving all the time, n now I just need to get back into exercising and portion control. I also have hypothyroidism, and every time one med gets adjusted it throws another one out of whack.

CASEYALYSSA: That's really good to know! I'm on Lexapro too, and we really couldn't figure out which pill was the culprit (I take so many!). I'm not sure I need the Lexapro anymore, so maybe I can ween myself off of it and that will help. That would be really nice!

I've been on Abilify a year next month and Lexapro since July.
i didn't notice a weight gain with the Abilify, but I'm notorious for not weighing myself when it's not my major focus. I've gained about 30 pounds since starting Lexapro, though. So that's fun. Working to get it off and then some, because my pdoc has said since the beginning that I needed to (beginning was about a year ago).

LAINEKAT: In my experience, Lamictal does not cause weight gain.
Abilify has been the difficult one for me. Although, when I originally started taking it, I was eating whatever I wanted while being very active daily. I run a horse boarding stable, so I was outside for several hours a day, shoveling manure. Still, I gained close to 20 lbs. I'm not entirely convinced it was because of the Abilify, but my NP switched me to Latuda. The Latuda made me very aggressive and gave me violent thoughts, so I switched back. For two weeks, I did a detox diet and lost 7 lbs, but my calorie intake was low... like 700 daily. So, could Abilify slow things down? We'll see over the next week or so. My calorie intake is up to 1200 now and I started a workout program. Really hoping I don't have to adjust my meds again...

Hi, I,m depressive bi-polar 1. Was doing good last year, but my husband retired. He is great with me. I went into the weepies. Also I did have to get a new psych. Like her better. She added lithium to the mix. Oh Lordy, did I get the skakes. She lowered the dosage, and increased lamictal. Good, but I couldn,t focus to well, and increased my focalin. Tomapax made me forget things and write. Seraqual did put weight on me.
At a good mix now.
Hubby and I have an extremely active sex life. None of meds i take now bother that, I,m 61, and I plan on being sexual, and sensoul. Any questions, just ask. Cherie

Lamictal never made me gain weight. I'm 58 so libido isn't there but is certainly compounded by depression meds. They messed round with my meds so that I don't have any highs anymore, just lows. I'm seeing my original Phsyc next week to see if a new bipolar med might be in order after 5 years.

Hey, does anyone have experience with Lamictal and side effects/weight gain/libido effect? I'm Bipolar II and nursing at the moment but once my baby is done I think I might want to get on meds again. Last time I was on anything they thought it was just depression and I was on Prozac and then Celexa. The Prozac sent me into hypomania heaven but the celexa was just crap. It made me lose my libido among other issues. Anyway, I'm just finally getting into exercising again and really losing weight and I do not want to get on something and gain it all back. The disorder is affecting my marriage, but so would a loss in libido about equally. Sleepiness to some degree is fine, but weight gain and libido diminishing is kind of a deal breaker. We finally got some books on living with someone with Bipolar disorder and that's helping too. Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone has had much experience with it. Thanks!

Hi guys! After gaining 27lbs, after a Seroquel increase, I have now lost 2 weeks in a row!! That's 2.4lbs!! Once I realized that, yeah, Seroquel has increased my cravings, but I am making the decision to put those foods in my mouth, and stopped that...added tons of moving my body-3miles a day, hours of standing and cleaning, watching television, etc..I have conquered the beast! As I start a new week, according to my weigh-in day(Weds.) I am eager to see myself lose again! Don't miss the point: We make the decision to put those foods in our mouths!

Hi Kelly~~

Right now I take Risperdal 2mg in the AM and I take Topamax (for nerve pain) 100mg twice a day. I have been on Risperdal long before Topamax and yes I gained weight on it. BUT they added Seroquel to it too and yes, I gained BUT --good news---I have managed to lose over 40lbs while taking BOTH Risperdal and Seroquel. IDK if the Topamax helped or not but I just started exercising more. For me, it wasn't the food so much as it was I was tired and I didn't get much exercise in. So, there is hope. The problem with the Risperdal---and this is coming right from my psych--is that it slows your metabolism so u really have to watch your diet and exercise. I just did that and maybe the Topamax DID help, I'm not sure but I lost. Over all, I've gone (while taking it) from 252lbs. down to 212lb. and I'm still trying to lose. The losing is slow (if u do it the right way)....There is no quick fix when it comes to taking antipsychotics and losing weight. Unfortunately, u have to do it slow and steady. Which, we as sparkers, already know. Best of luck to you and if u wanna chat about it..Look me up!

I don't take antipsychotics because they are the only class of drugs were for me the costs have outweighed the benefits. I do take topamax which is one of the only drugs were I have NO carb cravings. Works as a mood stabilizer but at a certain dose which varies for each person it becomes DOPAMAX and turns you into a zombie with no brain.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Kelley: I know from experience that it will make you hungry. I was up to 2mg per day, which wasn't that high. I eventually went off of it in about 3 months because of some other negative side effects. What I found is try to eat heathy snacks and portion control the "unhealthy" snacks so you don't feel denied. I know it really makes you tired, so I found that doing a bit of yoga helped.
I have no experience with the topamax, but I hope it helps you. I know the risperidone will, but definately make a list of things you're experiencing that might seem like side effects and share it with your shrink.

Just recently had risperidone added and I'm ALWAYS hungry and I'm at the lowest dose at the moment. They want to up my dose and I'm concerned. Not sure what to do. I keep hoping the topamax will counter the effect, but no. Any help here?

I was only on resperadal for 2 months and I gained about 10 lbs! I was also on lithium at 1500mg and I have managed to loose the 10 lbs myself with a lot of cardio. I already eat gluten free, so I've been adding more beans and lentils to my diet and I just have recently had an aversion to meat. I have suffered from anorexia in the past, so I'm trying to loose 15lbs more but in a healthful manner. Oh, I should also mention I'm 28 and I weigh 115ish.

ALL of the antipsychotics are known for having the side effect of weight gain including abilify which they try to market as NOT being as bad as the others. This class of drugs slows down the metabolism and plays around with the sugar levels. It is connected with metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
Lithium is also a weight gainer.
Paxil used to be referred to as the drug that PACKED IT ON.
Only drug that I didn't gain weight with was topamax.

Hi there, EGRAY---

I just read your post. Sorry it took so long. How are things going now? How's the weight loss?

I was going to post about myself with being on Risperdal and Seroquel. I will hopefully being off of Risperdal and staying just on Seroquel. However, both meds are known WELL for weight gain. Number 1 side effect. I'm losing but not like I want to. If I go off the Risperdal, I'm only battline one drug. I do think, though, that it is time to talk to psych about both drugs.. I've had NSV but that scale is NOT moving no matter what I do. I've plateaud at 2 weeks now. It took 4 weeks to break the last plateau. Yep, it's time to get off both I think and go on more weight neutral meds. I am afraid for my health. I'm 37 and weigh 215. It's not as bad as some stories I've heard but it's bad enough for me. I want to get into a healthy range. I don't wanna be skinny (never have been) I just wanna be average and healthy and right now that goal seems SO far away. I've been on SP since July and i've lost 5lbs. U can imagine the frustration. And that was after I GAINED two back.

I feel frustrated and trapped in this medication cycle and i wanna get off. I feel like psych. is the only one who can get me there. I stay within cals. and exercise nearly everyday and I'm just not seeing those numbers move AT ALL...Don't get me wrong, I don't depend on the numbers, but a little budge would be great. I do feel better but that's because I lost 37lbs. before Spark but only 5 since joining. Go figure that one out...

So, i was supposed to see her on the 29th she had to change it to the 4th of Dec. so when I see her we're going to have to talk about the side effects here. I know I'm not gaining which is great but I seem so far from losing. I have gained two lbs. back.

Fingers crossed..wish me luck on the 4th...

I gained 40lbs in 6 mos on depakote--stayed on it for 8 years because doctor and family convinced me it was better to be fat than crazy. Moved to new town-- new doc added remeron and gained 50 more pounds. Moved again, new doc stopped remeron and lost 40 lbs in 3 mos (yeah) . Got a new sedentary job on 3rd shift. Nothing to do but eat from vending machines--gained 25 back. Was doing well mood wise-doctor gave me permission to go off meds. Joined WW and gym and lost 50 lbs. Symptoms came back. New doc put me on lithium. in 1 1/2 years I have put on 15 lbs in spite of exercising 5 days a week and watching what I eat. This is stressing me out to no end. Also on the negative side, I drink a shot or more of something before bed because I can't sleep or sleep very little due to sinus problems and post nasal drainage. I also have a lot of stress because of my family. 3 of my children had severe problems in their relationships, one of my daughters is having fertility problems. And my youngest has very little income but is planning to get married. My husband is also underemployed. I am looking for someone--anyone--in this organization who could give me a little advice, especially about the meds vs. weight loss thing. emoticon

I know Seroquel and Depakote made me noticeably gain. I've been on so many combos that I can't remember all I've been on! Just know remembered I was on a med called Sonata. Don't think it made me gain though...

I,m a drugstore. Prisiq, wellbutrin, focalin, lamimictal, if I need it klonipin. Had them take me off any weight gainers, At nite ambien, klonipin and Trazadone, now she added the the lowest dosage of lithium, worried about that one. and increased the lamictal. I was crying at the drop of a hat, so thats why the mood stabilizers. Back at gym now, feel better. Still battling bursitis in my hip. I hate taking all these pills, but I like to be stable. and I,m the mild bi-polar!!! I hate forgeting too. Oh well, I don,t eat any processed foods, no sugar, and as little as I can of white flour. And a gal of herb tea! With Nutresse. Glad I can post here! I,ll help much as I can! Cherie

I was on Seroquel-300mg-also and I gained some weight but at the time, I was actively going to Curves and I noticed that when I didn't snack after I took my pills, I lost weight.
The last pill that I was on that made me gain weight and I couldn't stop the snacking was Saphris. I would try tea, fruit, coffee, nothing worked so I asked the dr. to take me off of it. He replaced it with Tegretol and Invega.
I have been going through med changes for almost a year now trying to get it tweaked to where I'm not paranoid, crying or psychotic. Right now, I am not paranoid or psychotic, but I cry at the drop of a hat. I'm working on it though!!!

I thought this may be interesting for us because we all (most) seem to have this in common. I thought maybe if we could name the meds--maybe you're on one and didn't know it was good for weight gain or psych may wanna put u on one--that have helped us gain weight, and come up with a gain plan on what to do about it? What have u done that works for you? How have u managed to take these meds and lose weight? Have u lost weight? Are u just starting out? What advice can we give to the "newbies" on how to lose while taking these meds?

Well, I weighed in at 252lbs. I was taking Seroquel 300mg and Risperdal 2mg. Both of these drugs are well known for weight gain. I was working and dealing with a very active bipolar--mania mostly mixed with a terrible case of paranoia.Yep, those were the days. Eventually, I had to stop working and ended up on disability. After I stopped working and stopped STRESSING, I was able to begin to lose weight. I watched what I ate. I didn't eat snacks anymore. I ate alot of snacks at work. I cut those out completly. I drank one can of soda a day. Couldn't completely cut that out yet. I began walking. Slowly..about 1/4 mile. Slowly, I progressed. After I DESTRESSED (I believe stress plays a HUGE part in our weight loss) and cut out the junk and upped my exercise, I lost 32lbs. in a little over a year. Yes, it did take me that long because of the meds. According to my psych, Risperdal and Seroquel SLOW your metabolism so we lucky people have to work TWICE as hard to lose weight. So it took me a year, but I did it. Right now, I weigh 214. It's taken me 3 month to lose 6lbs., but I'm not giving up at all! It's taking longer because since I lost that weight, my Seroquel has been increased. So I'm increasing my exercise and not eating over 1400 cals.

Some days are easier than others. Like, yesterday, I went over my cals by 46cals so I prob won't see a loss. And I have stood at 214 for 3 weeks. It's gonna take me time, but It will happen.

My meds--Seroquel and Risperdal
known for weight gain--number 1 side effect
what I did--cut out junk food, cut down soda, upped my exercise

So, I lost the initial weight and I'm still losing slowly but surely. I am also going to be going off of the Risperdal in Nov. (hopefully) so that should help me lose the pounds. Fingers crossed.

Looking forward to listening to others peoples stories and learning their tips and tricks to weight loss!
