I made time to ride my recumbent bike this afternoon for 8.45 miles, and I bowled in league this morning so I am keeping active as I can.

I remembered to eat my lunch at work! I had a nice veggie soup. I confess that I did eat it at my desk as I am very swamped, but at least I remembered to eat *grin*

We know that stress contributes to many physical and emotional issues. Today's challenge is to practice either belly breathing or 4-7-8 breath at least two times. Here is a link to webmd.com's "breathing exercises for relaxation." I've copied & pasted two forms of the breathing techniques shown in case you have problems with the link.

Belly breathing

Belly breathing is easy to do and very relaxing. Try this basic exercise anytime you need to relax or relieve stress.

1.Sit or lie flat in a comfortable position.
2.Put one hand on your belly just below your ribs and the other hand on your chest.
3.Take a deep breath in through your nose, and let your belly push your hand out. Your chest should not move.
4.Breathe out through pursed lips as if you were whistling. Feel the hand on your belly go in, and use it to push all the air out.
5.Do this breathing 3 to 10 times. Take your time with each breath.
6.Notice how you feel at the end of the exercise.
Next steps
After you have mastered belly breathing, you may want to try one of these more advanced breathing exercises. Try all three, and see which one works best for you:

4-7-8 breathing

This exercise also uses belly breathing to help you relax. You can do this exercise either sitting or lying down.

1.To start, put one hand on your belly and the other on your chest as in the belly breathing exercise.
2.Take a deep, slow breath from your belly, and silently count to 4 as you breathe in.
3.Hold your breath, and silently count from 1 to 7.
4.Breathe out completely as you silently count from 1 to 8. Try to get all the air out of your lungs by the time you count to 8.
5.Repeat 3 to 7 times or until you feel calm.
6.Notice how you feel at the end of the exercise.

Sorry Mauri...I missed this yesterday as I didn't get back on the computer at home until late.

Is there something you have wanted to add to or change in your lifestyle plans to achieve wellness? Today's the day to make that change.

I am going to continue to walk as much as I can prior to my surgery and then continue to build up my walking once the surgery is done. To do that, I'm going to work harder at keeping all my muscles strengthened.

I have stomach issues because of small intestinal bowel overgrowth. I have been avoiding really diving into what I should be eating because it is very restrictive. Today is the day I am going to review and make the plan of what are the best foods for my body and eat accordingly.

For me, there are two things. One is being sure to eat lunch, even if it is only drinking a yogurt smoothie. Being on the Hope Bus so much, I sometimes forget because there are days we have a constant stream of visitors. Using November to get back on track with having lunch.

The other is moving! Being on the RV for long hours, with the aforementioned stream of visitors, it is hard to keep moving. I am working at moving more, whether walking, strength exercising, etc. Taped a Fitness after 50 PBS program to use in the mornings or when I get home at night. It's a one hour show, so my goal is to do at least 15 minutes of it everyday.

Keeping healthier food in the fridge and pantry all the time and not bringing the snacky stuff in, cause if it's around we get into it.

What is the biggest challenge you face as you incorporate wellness to your life journey?

My biggest challenge is making sure that I have quick healthy things to grab from the fridge when those munchie times hit or when my family is enjoying things that I know are not good for me.
I'm trying to get into the habit of having veggies all cut up and ready to grab on the run.

For me, it is managing my time in a better way. I get so caught up in work responsibilities that I forget about taking time to recharge, which results in me not feeling happy. My goal is to work out a better time strategy before next Monday.

Planning ahead is my big issue, my fiancé and I often don't go shopping until there is NOTHING in the apartment to eat. Also I leave for work in the morning without a plan. I really think that getting serious about planning would make a big difference for me. I WILL start planning TODAY!!

I have two issues. First, water. I found myself really dehydrated recently and now I keep a 32 oz bottle of water with me everywhere and make sure that I drink two of these.

Second, exercise. Right now, I am facing two health issues that have precluded my walking and I hope to have these two hurdles cleared soon so I can get back on track.

What one thing do you know will move you forward to a healthy lifestyle that you don't make a priority?

For me lately it is walking. I miss walking, particularly since I used to walk along Narragansett Bay...love hearing the water lapping the rocks and seeing folks & their dogs walking the path. As I finish this first step of *sparking* again, I think that walking at Colt State Park, which is where the path is, will be the next addition.

Mauri...I've been having the same issue with water. I've always been a big water drinker and of late, just not even thinking about having something to drink! I have started putting some lemon juice into my first glass of water in the morning and for what ever reason, I've find myself wanting more water once again. I'm finally back up to drinking what I should, not every day as yet, but more often than not. I keep my water bottle with me all the time and it's a great reminder to stop and have a sip.

Sorry this is posting a bit late...having internet connection issues this morning.

What one thing can you do today to move you to your wellness goal?

I continue to struggle with drinking water...not that I'm not thirsty. I just don't stop long enough to satiate it. Such a strange experience since water is my beverage of choice...Just have to focus on it...so today I WILL drink a minimum of eight 8-oz. glasses of water. I WILL!!

Oh, you beat me to it, Wanda. I'll save my challenge for next week! :)

I am accompanying one of my friends to her ultrasound today and then treating her to breakfast.

Another friend, whom I met through my work, lost her boyfriend suddenly. We have a local support group, Sisters in Survival, and I'm inviting her to their holiday dinner to connect her with other women in the area. She cares for her parents, one of whom has Alzheimer's. I'm hoping this will help expand her world and set aside her grief every now and then.

Today's challenge is to tend to our spirit. Choose one thing that you can do to bless someone else's day and then do it.

Maybe it's a donation to a homeless shelter, maybe a plate of cookies or baking for a someone, send a letter or thinking of you greeting to someone you haven't thought of in awhile. You get the point. Be a blessing!

Today there will lots of temptations within your grasp as you have "candy" waiting for those little trick-or-treaters to drop by. Take a piece of paper and write on it WELLNESS WEDNESDAY, tape that piece of paper where you will see it as you reach into the bowl of candy. Hopefully it will remind you of the fact that you are working on making yourself well!

I am a day late for this, Shirl, but am aiming to do this today.

Because I am greeting/talking to so many people during my workday, I am not drinking enough water, and I think my body is telling me I am dehydrating - especially since I am on a diuretic for my blood pressure. Today I will focus on drinking at least 8 glasses of water.

Wellness Wednesday...hmmm, what did I do.

I got in my steps, so reached my daily goal plus.
No snacks in the evening.
Drank my water.
and for my mental wellness....I had my reduced work schedule approved for June, July and August. Woo Hoo.

What will you do today to help you be well?

Cutting way down on visiting fast food places, this is something that has to be done and when we do go to make the healthiest choices we can.

I walked away for all the treats that seem to make their way into our department at work. Sitting on the otherside of the room from the treat table is really helpful!

I use the stairs at work instead of the elevator.

I drank my water and walked away from grabbing cookies!

I spent the day around veggies and concentrated on how healthy they were going to taste this winter as I pulled them out of the freezer!

Spent some time just enjoying the beautiful weather out on my back deck.

Well I had fun with my friend Joyce, took her to the bank, drs. apt., Meijer's and then we stopped at BK for lunch, and no it wasn't a heathy lunch,but we had a lot of fun visiting and laughing, so today I fed my spirit with friendship.

My wellness Wednesday consisted of eating some extra fruit, getting down on my hands and knees and washing the LR/DR floor (I couldn't handle all the dust from sanding anymore), and spending some time doing some "mental wellness" by meditating and chatting with my Creator.

Mauri sorry I didn't get this started this morning, but was not having a good morning, didn't even get dressed till 11:30, Wellness Wednesday, now that's a good one.
