I have all new tune ups!
Meditation and mindfulness are new practices for me, I have always enjoyed yoga but done it sporadicly. Recently I have committed to a simple 30 minute Hatha Yoga DVD daily, I feel absolutely lovely when I'm done, in body and in mind.

Also I have recently begun to try to delve a bit deeper in my blogging here on Spark. As well as posting gratitudes daily with one of my other spark teams.

Great challenge Mauri...thank you for the reminder.

For me, my "tune up" is each morning as I write my blog. I start my morning off even before getting out of bed with giving thanks for the new day and asking that I have a positive attitude through out the day. Then blogging my gratefuls each morning reminds me how much I have to be grateful for. It helps me to keep my focus on the positives things and not let the negatives over take me.
I have also gone back to track my food each day. I noticed that I had slipped back into the old habit of not eating sufficiently for my body. I'm making changes to keep things working properly.

Thank you again Mauri.
Hugs,
Wanda

In the old email notifications from SP, there were "Healthy Living" emails sent that focused around a quote. I remember one that reminded us we sometimes need to "tune up" our bodies much as we take care of our cars. In what way(s) do you "tune up" your road to a healthy lifestyle?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I remembered that email, I am reminded how I assessed each month and whether I was maintaining my personal Spark Plan that I write each year. Because I've let work take over my time, I haven't done that since sometime in 2011. Now that I am tracking nutrition once again and rewritten my "Other Goals," I have set a reminder to do that at the end of 28 days.
My morning time is now divided differently to allow me to *spark* each day, whether it's our team's daily challenges, blogging, entering meals, or visiting the other two teams who support me.
April 24 Writing Wednesday
Try to remember a time when you might have hurt someone or someone hurt you. Write a letter to this person apologizing or asking for forgiveness. You don't have to mail the letter, but you do need to release the burden you might have been carrying. Letting go of things that burden us is a great step forward to health.
What are your passions in life? Do you have the opportunity to pursue them? if not, can you make changes in your life to follow them?
My number one passion is focusing on Clenton to help him regain his strength and health and for him to be able to have a good quality of life for as long as he's hear with me.
Second passion is reading, it gives me a means of escape and helps me to relax, especially when I read before bedtime.
What are your passions in life? Do you have the opportunity to pursue them? if not, can you make changes in your life to follow them?
My passions in life: my family, I am so blessed to have the wonderful children that I do and a hubby that is my best friend in so many ways. Our family is a very tight unit and always there for each other.
We make time for each other. Most weekends find us gathering together at our home, even if it's for just a short visit.
Reading is my other passion. Working at the library, keeps me motivated to find and explore new books and topics, challenging myself to grow and learn.
Hugs.
1. Reading - When I take a technology free day, I love being able to pick up a book and read.
2. Walking - Because my work hours are so long, I don't walk as much as I did. I need to find time, even if it is 10 minutes here & there to do that. Walking helps clear my head.
3. Time with friends - I've lost touch with so many friends because of working so many days & hours, because I don't have the time & on the few evenings or weekend days I don't work, I'm too exhausted. I need to take back some of my own time to do this.
I certainly do want to make changes in 2013, right now just trying to feel better so I can get back to exercising. My priority right now is my health.
Happy New Year Mauri....this is a great challenge...I am going to have to see if I can do this one either from work or later when I get home again. I need to do some thinking on this one. Thank you for "challenging" me. (I'll be back)
Hugs,
Wanda
Do you make changes to your healthy life program/plan at the beginning of each new year? What changes are you making in 2013?
1. I have set some new goals for myself to work towards this year. I will continue to do my walking as much as my knee allows me to do.
2. I have brought out the weights once again and am working on establishing a routine for upper body exercise.
3. I am choosing to challenge myself.
Have a great day.
Hugs,
Wanda
Do you make changes to your healthy life program/plan at the beginning of each new year? What changes are you making in 2013?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. I am re-examining my 2012 Spark Plan, though hoping to get it done by yesterday but delayed because of the flu. I am hoping to have it done by the weekend.

2. Still working on my 2013 word of the year. I need just a bit more clarity before I settle on one of the several in consideration.

3. Need to readjust since I lost one of my part-time jobs so it has taken its toll on finances, which then affects the kinds of food I can afford to buy.

4. Allowing myself to grieve the loss of one of my two best friends who died of her cancer a month ago. I realize I am in the midst of my seasonal affective disorder (SAD), coupled with her grief and our sn*wstorm this weekend. Added to those is being back in the office environment since the Hope Bus is in hibernation. These have contributed to depression. I need to be more consistent with my counseling sessions to help ease me through these issues.

1. Still not feeling good, but thankful it's just allergies and not anything serious, there are so many of us who have to deal with the allergies.

2. Easy food available to fix for DH's lunch.

3. Not having a job to have to try and go to when not feeling well.

4. Being able to lay down and rest if I feel I need to.

The reality of life is that we need to change something in order to get something."

That idea is part of a healthy quote email SP sent in 2009 and I saved. What one change can you make today to help your wellness journey?

Will eat lighter today to try and balance things out from eating out last night, all ready got in a good workout. It's so great we have the ability to adjust.

Thanks Mauri

There are several I need to make since my work schedule interferes with exercise, water and food. I really miss and can feel the effects of not always making my 8 glasses of water. I used to drink 10 or more glasses. Today my change is to focus on getting the water my body needs.

As the earth awakens in springtime, I can't help but think about all the beautiful flowers.

Do you garden? Flowers? Veggies? Fruits?
What is your favorite flower(s)?

Thanks to a very inspirational spark friend, Yep, I now garden. I used to restrict myself to indoor gardening only and now I've branched out considerably to the great outdoors. I'm very much into veggie gardening and the more I do, the more I want to do. There is nothing like eating your own fresh grown veggies. I started out as a container gardener and now have 4 raised garden beds as well as my containers. Even if you live in an apartment, you can still grow many veggies in containers. Don't let where you live dictate whether or not you can grow things. Some is always better than none.
I also have 2 apple trees and a pear tree. I just planting them last year and am hoping to see some fruit this year from them.
Flowers are Garry's domain, I'm an indoor flower garden still and Garry does the outdoor flowers.

Have a great day,
hugs,
Wanda

I miss the flower gardens I use to have at our last home in the country. Seeing we are in a ground floor apartment we have planted flowers, we have daffodils, shasta daisy's, and Asiatic lillies. It gives DH something to look after. We both love flowers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't garden since I missed my parents' gene for the skill but I love flowers! My favorites are violets, lilies of the valley and tulips.
Yesterday on my way home from a local school where I taught breast cancer awareness classes, I noticed a home that had a beautiful garden filled with daffodils, jonquils, irises, hyacinths and tulips and thought that I would love to have such a garden. Those were the flowers that my parents had planted at a home we rented when I was a child.
Seeing as our Thanksgiving was over and done with in October, I'll share a story of how my Dad and Garry are cut from the same cloth. Garry and I have been together since our very early teens. Garry had come over to our place for Sunday dinner. Mom had made the usually roast, potatoes and gravy. Garry was cutting his meat and his plate tipped over in his lap, my Dad laughed and helped him clean up. Garry, good sport that he was stayed the evening despite lots of ribbing from my Dad. The next Sunday he decided to brave it once more and stay for dinner....it was the best evening of Garry's life to that point...my Dad had the same thing happen to him...he was cutting his meat and his plate tipped onto his lap (and no...it wasn't on purpose). Garry was so pleased to discover that he was not the only person that this could happen to. Lots of laughs and ribbing over this incident have carried through the years.
Sure do miss my Dad.
Hugs,
Wanda
Nov. 23, do you have any Thanksgiving stories you could share from the past with us, this day before the Big Bird Day!
When I was a kid my mom won a live turkey at bingo, and it was a big bird, and yes we did have it for Thanksgiving dinner.
I can remember when the kids were quite young, I fixed a turkey and forgot to take the stuff out of the neck cavity, I felt pretty silly when I discovered that.
Have a very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving tomorrow and be thankful for all that you have.
Hugs,
Mauri what a pleasant surprise to come here this morning and see you had all ready taken care of today's challenge, thank you dear friend.
I am with Wanda on the parents one, there are lots of things I'd love to ask them. I am thankful for the values they instilled in me as I was growing up.
I would like to be able to ask my oldest sister if she thought or knew if someone had done something to her to make her so sick before she passed away, I'll always wonder.
Mr. and Mrs Conklin who had a very large family and would have to take two cars to get them all to church, but they would still stop and pick me up and take me to church with them when I was just a little girl. There were many times I'd be down to their place about 1/4 of a mile from where we lived and they'd invite me to eat a meal with them, they had a daughter my age and we played together a lot. When I got older Mrs. Conklin was my 4-H leader. I just loved this whole family and have so many good memories connected to them.
Hugs
Mauri...I love the challenge, yay for seeing you first things this morning...hope your day is filled with positives.
If you could invite 3 people who have touched your life to the dinner table, who would they be?
1. My parents...there are so many questions I realized I had never asked while they were still here. So many times that I never said "thank you". It's only as you gain perspective that you see the bigger picture of all that they attempted to do in your life. Thank you Mom and Dad.
2. Shirl...she has blessed my life in so many ways, and right along with her I would like to sit down with Marla, Mauri, Polly and Kathy. Each of these ladies have blessed my life with their caring and genuine being. They have taught me much more about living to the fullest than I ever knew possible.
3. This is tough...to limit it to only a few people. There are so many that have touched my life in very positive and full filling ways. I need to have a party!
Hugs,
For me, it would be my 7th grade teacher, Sister Mary Josepha, who helped me develop some independence from my overprotective mom;
My friend Peter, whom I don't see much anymore but who helped me understand the process of dying and loss when my dad was making his journey to a new life;
My friend Laurie that I met through my new job who is teaching me to love life with it's sparkling moments and it's darknesses. Laurie is dying of triple negative breast cancer but is helping many people, gracious and happy...90% of her days are spent with big smiles on her face.
Reading through all the responses to this challenge, left me feeling like I want to be traveling too...lol.
We are really in limbo this year. I do have some time off work at the end of July, but with Garry's Dad in hospice, we aren't making any specific plans. Garry's been doing a lot of back and forth to Saskatchewan to see his Mom and Dad, but we'll have to wait on the Lord on this one.
I'm actually looking forward to having the time off and not having to go anywhere to be on a time schedule. I'm planning on some relaxing on back deck with some good books.
Hugs,
Wanda
Mauri and Kathleen your activities for this summer sound like fun. We won't be doing any far away traveling, our excursions will be close to home. Youngest DD wants family to come to their place in Paw Paw over the 4th of July and camp out and swim, July 30, we have a grandson's wedding to go to over by Kalamazoo, we also received another wedding invitation from one of DH's grandsons and that will be in Aug. in New Jersey, but we aren't going to that one. There are local events wie'll be going to like Celebrate Charlotte, and our Eaton Co. fair, we usually go down there on senior day, it's free. I hope all have a fun filled summer.
I am going to travel with my daughter and a friend, to a peninsula in Lake Michigan, we are going to stay in a cabin (or house, not quite sure what to expect) and look at lighthouses and art galleries. I hope my daughter will not be too bored. I am looking forward to it, but a little anxious too.
Good one, Shirl.
On the last weekend of July, I will be traveling to Long Island, NY for a family reunion on my maternal grandmother's side. I have not seen some of these cousins in 10+ years...and some I've yet to meet. We are coming from as far away as Italy (they actually took up a collection for one of the Italians to be able to fly to NY), Florida, California, Illinois, and as close by as Rhode Island. What fun it will be!
In August my friend Sandy and I are making a return trip to Scranton, PA to meet up with my Spark friend Char from my Movin' It team...We met for the first time last year and had a blast...along with two other teammates. This year I know Sandy & I are going...not sure if anyone else will be joining us...hoping they do!
Spring seems like it is coming late here, there is still snow in the forecast, and it's cold and gray and wet. But not every day. Some days are in the 50's and 60's, sunny and breezy. Our rhubarb has made an appearance and I am looking forward to the spring tart taste of rhubarb sauce and baked goods. The forsythia is the most "blooming" thing in my yard along with a few daffodils.
I am praying for your healing Mauri, and that you will get a good treatment plan in place soon.
Spring looks like summer down here in Texas. The summers I used to know it upstate NY at least. I enjoyed reading tales of crocuses and tulips, hyacinths and I used to love the bearded Irises arrival. Someone mentioned the forsythias blooming and that made me pine for my old home. What I consider the beauty of Spring in Texas is about the last week of March when the Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrushes are in full bloom. It is a gorgeous sight!
Mauri, I wish you well with your arm/shoulder trials. Keep us posted. We're good for a prayer or two! Love you.
Thanks for the healing prayers/thoughts. They are now leaning towards surgery because I'm "only" 61 and active so they think it will restore more rotation/axis/movement to my shoulder than it healing on its own. Seeing an orthopedic surgeon today for a second opinion. The concern is that they have discovered arthritis in my shoulder bone (tho' I don't feel it???) and if it is brittle, it could pulverize. That puts me in a worse situation than I presently have. Today I've finally reached frustration point and tears...Tomorrow is 2 weeks and I still don't have a treatment plan in place!
Mauri...healing prayers for you my friend. Have they ruled out surgery?
Spring is upon us...What are you doing to celebrate springtime...or has it not arrived where you live?
Spring has finally arrived on our doorstop. The mounds of snow are finally melting, the snow mold is everywhere and so are the allergies, but no one is complaining...WE HAVE SUNSHINE!
I love the springtime. Things are renewed and life once again shakes and squirms it way out of the cold and dark. Birds are chattering, activity increases out of doors. You once again begin to see your neighbors as they all begin to come out of their homes to spend time in their yards and chatting to one another. God willing, we will actually see a summer this year too!
My seedlings are all in need of being transplanted into their permanent home for the growing season. I'm as anxious as they are.
Spring...renewal...life.
Hugs,
Wanda
Compared to the rest of the country, springtime is here, but it is not the springtime that we are used to. It has been a mixture of rain, wind and sun. (although looking out my window this morning-it looks sunny and pleasant). I am not complaining though. I would like spring to take it's time, because it means a short hot summer.
Mauri sending healing thoughts your way.
I am enjoying seeing the grass get so green, especially with all this rain we have been getting. Watching the birds busily collecting tidbits to build their nest with. Seeing the temps finally get to normal springtime temps.Just enjoying the joy of this season of rebirth.
Have a glorious Wednesday.
Since it is taking me forever in the mornings to get dressed because of my fractured right shoulder and arm...and longer to type with one hand, I decided to post tonight for tomorrow.
Spring is upon us...What are you doing to celebrate springtime...or has it not arrived where you live?
Here it is in the upper 60s today...a far cry from 30s last weekend. I am trying to enjoy the touches of color in daffodils,hyacinths, tulips...and the budding trees.
Mauri...I was so excited to see the challenge first thing this morning...I love it!
3 things I love about Spring.
1. Being able to walk outdoors again without fear of freezing or falling.
2. Sunshine.
3. All the newness that surrounds us in nature.
(and spring means that winter is over....welll it's supposed to, but the snow is still falling*grin*)
Hugs,
Wanda
it is the first Wednesday of spring 2011. (Though where I live we are expecting 5 in.of sn*w!) Name 3 things you love about spring.
1. Hearing the birds singing me awake.
2. Seeing plants popping their heads through the soil. Croci are budding in our garden.
3. Walking outdoors again...even in the spring rain!
I just thought I would bring out the writing Wednesday thread. I always benefit from writing out my goal or goals for the day.
My goal today is to get back into a healthy rhythm. The time change always makes for a period of adjustment for me. My natural flow is off by that hour and I need to be attentive to make the change. (otherwise dinner is served too close to bedtime!) Today I will use the timer to keep me on track.
My other goal is to write out all the things that I have planned in my head. Until they are in black and white and ready to check off, they are just daydreams.
Have a wonderful Wednesday.
~Nancy~
Do you prefer books to magazines?
What's your favorite type of book?
Do you discuss passages with friends or journal about anything you've read?
Rebecca...you and I have the same job! That is awesome...I know exactly what a thrill it can be to be ordering a book that you can hardly wait for to come in so you can read it. I do all the adult and Bookmobile ordering of all material, so much fun.
I am an avid reader, I prefer non-fiction and Christian material, but I also like some fantasy.
I'd have to say that I read more books than magazines, but as we carry over 300 magazine subscriptions in our library...I do slip out every once in a while and look through the ones I enjoy. I usually gravitate towards the gardening, spiritual and home decorating ones. Love "shop smart".
I will usually mention to friends or family books that I have enjoyed reading and why. I have an extensive collection of books that I keep for reference.
Great questions Mauri...thanks,
Hugs,
Wanda
I love reading books. I work in a library and my job is to order the books and dvds. I don't get to decide which ones we get, but I do the ordering. :-)
I read non-fiction and fiction. Sometimes all I have time for is poetry and short stories other times I read novels, travel books, biographies. Of course I read kids books too since I'm a mom.
Sometimes I blog about what I've read. I won't post the link here though, but yes I love reading.
I also love writing and including my Spark blog I have 3 blogs plus numerous stories and poems that I'm working on. Haven't had time yet to sit down and put together my novels, but they are works in progress for when I retire I guess. :-)
I've always loved to read. I like non-fiction and fiction, Sometimes I discuss what I've read with a friend or DD, do not journal. Books can take me to far away places I know I'll never see in person, when I was a kid I loved reading the National Geographic magazine. I've done a lot of reading this winter, my sister has given me lots of books, I read them then pass them on.
"When reading a book, article, etc.,... discussing a passage with a friend or journaling about it on your own can leave a lasting impression on your mind."
This quote came in a SP email in 2009 (and probably has appeared again since).
Do you like to read?
Do you prefer books to magazines?
What's your favorite type of book?
Do you discuss passages with friends or journal about anything you've read?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love reading. Often I've said that I've traveled the world and met many interesting characters in books. My favorites are Venetian and English mysteries, but read mostly anything - tho' my least favorite genres are romance and self-help books (unless it's REALLY worthwhile).

Two friends are avid readers and so when we are together we will discuss what we are reading. If my job allowed the time, I'd try to find a book club...and really miss the online book club in which I participated at e-diets.com. When I checked out the book teams here at SP, I never found one in which I felt comfortable. If I can afford the time, maybe I'll revisit them...perhaps there are new teams of book lovers.

For me it would be spent with John...having breakfast out (my fave thing to do)...then coming home to cozy up while watching Perry Mason DVDs with him and the kitties...and once he left, to curl up with a cup of hot tea, a good book, and my kitties.

Well I am the old retired lady so all my days are spent at home, so can't really relate to this one anymore, but sometimes cause I am home all the time I do take a day and just play instead of working around the apartment, maybe make cards, read a book or whatever suits my fancy.

Like Lexie, I make my own work schedule. Days home are days to keep up with the "stuff" around here. Time to be creative and also time to connect (last year's Mauri word) by writing letters and making phone calls. Time to work on recommitting myself to my priorities. Time to put a few pieces in the jigsaw puzzle du jour. Time to sew or knit a few stitches. Time to experiment with a new healthy recipe. Time to discover the things my new iPhone can do. Time to take a long walk! Which is what I'm going to do right now. Thanks for the brain tickle, Mauri.

I actually work from home anyway, so I don't know how to respond. :-) I do get days where I throw up my hands and say, "No Work Today! I need some R&R!" On those days my one rule is to avoid housework as well as work work! LOL

How to I spend an unexpected time at work...hmmmm, pretty much continuing to work from home, providing that I have brought work home with me. If I don't have work with me at home, then I spend my time doing what needs to be done at home as well as using the time to read, catch up with friends via the phone or internet and generally using the unexpected time to recharge.

Given the sn*storm here today, I am wondering how you spend days that keep you at home unexpectedly.

For me today I will do some work from home, clean another corner of things not necessary, catch up on dvr'd TV, and hopefully find time to read.

I'm working on my movement plans at the moment, mixing things up a bit and trying different ideas to get myself moving in a variety of strengthening and cardio-pumping ways. :-)
I'm working on playing with my food too. I need to batten down the financial hatches, so am trying to find a variety of tasty, healthy, low-cost meals I can enjoy. If my staples are cheaper it means I can treat myself to the odd piece of yumminess like a fillet of salmon without breaking the bank. :-)
Lots of planning, sorting, experimenting and hopefully having fun with it all for me this year.

Mauri..thank you for reminding me about the word "exercise". This morning I will "move" my body as I shovel the snow!

I've got a wonderful word this year.."reveal" and each morning I'm asking that the days lessons be revealed to me so that I might learn and grow from them. I'm also working on letting go of how I expect things to be created and allowing things to unfold according to a higher understanding.
I'm working on concentrating on being healthy through my actions rather than allowing the scales to tell me whether I am or not.
In general, I'm changing my way of thinking to be more inline with what my inner wisdom has been attempting to guide me with. I'm listening more to inner guidance.

First Wednesday of 2011!

What are you doing to progress on your healthy journey? Are you changing anything in your life? Are you shaking things up?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've revised my Spark Plan and tried to make it more realistic - took the words out that always make me fail - like "exercise" since I use it every year and then feel like I've failed about March...so lose my momentum. This year I'm choosing to move instead. Added a few, modified a few, and kept the established behaviors as part of it to remind me to continue them...until they become permanent habits.
Speaking of...have to get going so I can clean a corner before heading out the door! :)
Oh, Wanda, I didn't even realize I didn't share it. it is BALANCE! As you know, I seem to just work and have lost both my sparks...as in life and SP! So I am going to work on balance between work and personal time, healthy living and work, work and sleep, work and reading, work and John...You get the picture, right?
Usually I meditate and spend time, making a list of contenders...but this just popped into my head...and I realized how much I need it!
Also, I'm working on those team goals that we discussed so longgggggg ago!
Okay Mauri...what's the word???? You are so on top of things. I was thinking a while back that it's almost time to do some meditating and gather my word in for 2011...you beat me to it *grin*
I'm really not good with setting new year's resolutions...I'd rather just do a daily resolution, it works better for me. I'm going to become more active though, that is one area that I've slacked off in this past year. Now that the big move for the library is done, I hope to not be so tired.
Actually, yes. Not as a new year resolution as such, but I will need to adjust what I've been doing and what I need to do to try and get fitter. Strength training went for a big slide the last month or so, and I plan to rectify that for a start. :-)
I FORGOT today is Wednesday! Sorry to post this later in the day.
Are you revising or creating a plan to pursue your healthy lifestyle for 2011?
emoticonemoticonemoticonemoticonemoticon
I am definitely revising my 2010 Spark Plan for 2011. Each year, as some of you know, I select a word for the year. My 2011 word just popped up into my mind! Hoping it guides me through the year. My 2010 word (connection) really did guide me in many ways.
Mauri...a great reminder to be grateful for all that we have.
It is easy saying thank you for the easy things, and takes a bit more to be grateful and say thank you for the challenges. Like you, I'm learning to look on my challenges as a growing experience and am grateful for the opportunities to gain a better look at myself.
Have a wonderful day and thank you for always coming up with some great thought provoking challenges.
What are some ways you accept all that comes your way with gratitude?
For me, it is easy when good things/people enter my life to be grateful. Saying "thank you" to those things that come my way that are challenges is a whole other story...though I am slowly learning to be grateful for those as well since they make me more understanding, compassionate, forgiving, kind, and stronger, especially in dealing with this next challenge.
What are the luxuries you take for granted:
My warm bed.
A safe vehicle to get me where I want to go.
Sometimes my family.
Food on my table.
My health.
Freedom.
The right to express my own opinion.
Great question Mauri. Thanks for the food for thought.
Awhile ago, this was the lead sentence of a Healthy Reflections email from SP: "Are you grateful for the luxuries in your life?" It described how the contestants on "Survivor" truly develop an appreciation for luxuries that we consider just ordinary. What are the luxuries you take for granted:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. My car
2. The roof over my head
3. Electronics - computer, iTouch, TV, radio, DVR, telephone
4. My job
5. Running water
6. Heat
7. Air conditining
8. Books

For me, is is a lifelong passion for learning, and the enjoyment I get from learning and also from helping others to learn. Maybe it is the frustrated school teacher in me (both my parents were teachers and my great aunt was awarded an OBE for services to schools, so it's in the blood).

With me, the topics tend to be of a spiritual nature, and it really feeds my soul. :-)

I love this challenge Mauri...I'm not attempting to toot mhy own horn on this one, but helping others to find their positives is a huge one for me. One of the reasons that I followed guidance and began this team was because I reading so many negatives on SP. We are the creators of our own reality and people need help in understanding that. By using positive affirmations and finding your blessings in each day no matter how small you might think them,you change your focus. With that change of focus you begin to attract into your life even more blessings and positive things. By giving people a place where they can learn to focus on the positives has really blessed my life. It's become a community of people that care about each other and support each other. I'm not saying that we are the only team to be doing this, all I'm saying is being positive works!

This idea resulted from a DailyOm.com email.

Today consider making a list of all the interests in your life that you feel you cannot do without—things that delight you and spark your imagination. Choose one thing that speaks to you the most, and think about how you could integrate this into your life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My parents instilled and showed by example the importance of helping others. It is one thing about which I am most passionate (yes, Wanda and Nancy, even more than my kitties and books...hehehehe). How blessed I am to have found a job that allows me to live this passion! Working for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation has opened my heart and creativity even more than I thought I could. Being part of all our support groups...Meeting with a newly diagnosed 36 yo woman with 7 yo and 10 yo girls and spending nearly 1 1/2 hours with her...Reaching out to those with financial and literacy issues...It's the map my parents drew for me...and I'm walking that journey.
When I'm getting too serious about things, I know it's time for an attitude adjustment...cause usually I'm cranky (Yes, I admit...I do get cranky!)
I try to take some time for just being by myself and meditating. Deep breathing really helps me to loosen up also.
Being around my family is mostly guaranteed to be a mood lightener...I'm so blessed that they all have such a wonderful sense of humor.
Getting outdoors and being in nature is a natural calming effect for me. Except when is cold and snowing and then it's only a form of exercise shoveling snow! *grin*
Reading is a great way for me to relax and unwind. I read alot!!!!
Chatting with friends. How can you not have fun with friends???
Thanks Mauri...another great challenge.
What method(s) do you use when you realize you are taking life too seriously?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At those moments I have a couple of methods that I use.

1. A conversation with one of my two close friends always helps - since they are totally honest with me and will point out that things aren't quite as serious - or difficult - as I think...or will sometimes support me if they are.

2. Meditation...spending some quiet time in prayer and/or thought...always helps me to calm myself...as does deep, cleansing breathing.

Funny how we are on the same wave length Mauri...it was a crazy month in October and now it's time to focus on me.

November will be a time for me to refocus on my goals, to get back on track with getting proper sleep at night and instilling my exercise routine back into my life. Already the little changes I've made to get back on track are helping me to be motivated to continue.

With the advent of a new month, have you made any changes to your goals to a healthy lifestyle? Have you re-evaluated? Is a new month a milestone for you?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Working for a Breast Cancer Foundation, October was a blur for me...working 15 -16 hours/day...so I totally lost focus...no time to exercise, eating foods that were easy like cereal or picking something up on the way to or from work at a drive-thru...
November is a new month that is helping me refocus on my goals to make necessary changes to a healthy lifestyle...and 3 days into it, I'm already feeling better!
Nancy, obviously I procrastinated about the answer, too!
For me, it's exercise...and phone calls. I can think of so many more fun things to do...so, once I am past this Saturday...because I will just give up between now and then (since I'm now entering hour 12 at work)...
I will exercise at least 15 minutes every day. That's my goal. My plan is to do it when I arise in the morning, after feeding the cats (so I don't get tangled in them). I will do 5 mins. stretching, 19 mins. of walking on Mon, Wed, Fri, and 10 mins. of strength training on Tues, Thurs, Sat.
I will return 3 phone calls during a week. That's the goal. I will make a call as soon as I arrive home so that I don't get caught up in cleaning, cooking/eating, etc.
I hope you found your joy, Honey! :-)
From the time I was a little girl, I took to heart one of the pages in my dad's Readers' Digest. The page was called 'Laughter, The Best Medicine'. I read every joke on that page, all the ones on the Humour in Uniform page, and all the cute and funny little stories they used to tag onto the ends of the articles. I also did the word trivia, where you had to guess the definition of twenty words. I even read the occasional article. :-)
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I consider having a laugh a vital part of my day, and if I can't find something to giggle about, I know it has been a really bad day!
It isn't that I don't take things seriously, because I do. I just never want to be so bogged down in the serious stuff that I forget to have fun. :-)
Hugs,
Lex xxx
Good Afternoon Positive Bloggers. I am just home from a morning of subbing and thought I'd pull up the Wednesday challenge since Mauri is detained today. Mauri if you happen to get here, just go ahead and re-post your challenge and I will join in that as well.
I saw a bumper sticker on my way home that said:
"She who laughs LASTS" It is important to laugh. How is your sense of humor these days?
----------------------
My sense of humor comes and goes. I find that when I am living in the moment, I find many more things to laugh at. My sense of humor suffers when I get all caught up and distracted by various troubles or perceived problems. (I find that I am one who loves a good problem to solve and can create problems where there are none. I'm working on that." In order for me to laugh a healthy laugh, I need to make sure that I have taken care of myself. I've been responsible for meeting my needs and then the laughter comes freely.
Have a great day. Take good care of yourself and be free to find some joy today. I will do the same.
~Nancy~
Thanks Mauri...although I am part way through my day...I've still got lots of time to repeat my positive affirmation.
I always start and end my day with positives affirmations, but often forget to do them through out the day...thanks for the reminder.
Hugs,
Wanda
Walking down the hill into town at the end of the very last day of my school life, with a group of friends and Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners blaring on our boombox! We danced all the way down the hill! :-)
Happy days!
Oh, and in primary school one of my teachers hated me, and the feeling was mutual, until the annual village agricultural show when I discovered she raised and showed goats and I fell in love with her goats and kids, and spent most of my day helping her out. After that we got on great!
My all time favorite memory of school was my wonderful grade one teacher Mrs. Lindskog. We all cried at the end of grade one when she told us that she wouldn't be our teacher in grade 2, guess she really felt sorry of us, cause she signed up to take us on again in grade 2 and in grade 3! She just made school a fun place to be. I remember one Easter, how she went the extra mile for all us little believers in the Easter bunny. We had green lino floors that were always covered with chalk dust half way through the day. We went out for recess and when we came back in, here were bunny foot prints all around the class room and by everyones desk. A lovely surprise left on each desk by the Easter bunny just made the day perfect. God bless such teachers.
Hugs,
Wanda
Happy September!
With September's advent, schools open. What is your favorite school memory(ies)?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have an academic one. In my junior high school year (3rd year, if you are not in the US system), my grade average in Algebra II was so high that I wasn't required to take any exams. I'm convinced my guardian angel, who sits on my shoulder, was a math whiz!

I also have a personal one. I was a very shy kid, overweight, and my mom made sure I was "little Miss Goody Two-Shoes." It was embarrassing and I spent most of Grades 1 through 6, sitting alone in a corner of the schoolyard reading. Then came Sister Mary Josepha as my 7th grade teacher. She took me under her wing and I had made my first friend in school. Whenever I think of her, I still whisper a thank-you - She worked diligently to build my self-esteem. After college, I lost track of her when she went to missions around the world. One of these days maybe I'll find her in an Internet search.
