I'll add up our totals for this week and will also add up the total kms we have walked over the past year. Definitely keep tracking for your own motivation! Who knows, we may start off somewhere else before this year is over...MJ

They're crimson, MJ.

Does that mean I should track my kilometres for another week?

Joanna, how are those red toenails?
I didn't do as well this week- 54.8 kms- just too much snow that needed to be moved rather than walked on. We may or may not get to Sofia but we started this walk last January so I think it's fitting to finish 12+ months later. Let me know where you may choose to walk next, I may tag along...MJ

63.4 for my final numbers. It was tempting to put a low number so we wouldn't finish this week but I guess that wouldn't be right. I've really enjoyed this challenge and I'm tempted to start a similar challenge on my team just to keep it up. I'll have to think about it. I find it hard to keep up with the challenges I run now some days.

Take care, MJ. See you on the boards.

Sorry to be so late this week, snow has got in the way. We managed 175 kms and have arrived in Velika Tarnovo, an ancient city of 100,000 in northern Bulgaria. Tarnovo was the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and is recognized for the Artistic School of Bulgarian architecture, painting and literature. Liberated by Russia from the Ottoman Empire in 1877, in 1908 Tarnovo was the site of the declaration of Bulgarian independence. The architecture is magnificent here and for this reason Tarnovo is considered the principal tourist destination. Visit the Trapezista, a medieval fortress in the old inner city. Wander through Samovodska Charshia, the original trade street that has been fully restored. Orthodox cathedrals abound, there are lovely parks along the winding Yantra River and many public sculptures to enjoy.
We're heading west now to Sofia, the modern capital city- then our hike will be done! What a great time this has been- see you next week...MJ

Welcome back.

It was getting lonely on this hike through Europe with just MJ since she can't always be here because she has so many other duties as team leader.

69.9 kilometres for me this week, MJ! Almost 70 but alas not...

Have a good week, everyone!

Joanna, we made 120 kms last week and have reached the city of Buzau north of Bucharest. This city with a population of 135,000 is in Transylvania, an area in the East Carpathian mountains on the River Danube plains. Since the 14th century it has been a market and trading center- today the region is noted for its orchards, market gardens and vineyards. Industry here relates to metal and plastics production. Be sure to visit the Romanian Orthodox cathedral built in 1650. We're heading south to Bucharest...MJ emoticon emoticon emoticon

Joanna, we did 131 kms. last week and have arrived at the southernmost border of both Modolva and the Ukraine. At this point is a railway junction in the town of Reni. With just 20,000 people the town has no other real claim to fame- we'll head west towards Bucharest this week...MJ emoticon emoticon

Joanna, between us we have traveled 350 kms and are now in Chisinau, the capital city of the small country of Moldova which lies just to the south of the Ukraine. Chisinau has a population of 600,000- it sits on the banks of the River Bic and has been in existence since the early 1400's. The land is flat and very fertile here- grapes and other fruits have been grown here since the beginning. Summers are hot and dry, winters cold and windy. Moldova suffered the same atrocities during WWII as it's neighbours and today most of the architecture reflects post war design. It is the banking and industrial centre of the country, but there are also wonderful avenues of shops to be found. Sport of choice is European football- David Beckhan debuted here as an English pro in 1996. Two more countries to explore, next week we will be heading towards Bucharest, Romania.

We managed 305 kms and are now just north of Kiev, the capital city of the Ukraine. Founded as a Slav trading post in the 5th century, Kiev is a high tech, educational and cultural powerhouse of eastern Europe. It has a vibrant population of 2.7 million who enjoy theatre, great shopping concourses, sports including football and hockey and a public transportation system that is the envy of most other major cities. Be sure to visit the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Monastery of the Caves, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Throughout the city you'll see many public sculptures and monuments, including the famous statue of the city's guardian, Michael the Archangel. There are street vendors everywhere selling crafts and of course regional foods- think perogies!
We are on our way south towards the small country of Moldova- have a wonderful Christmas, walk off the goodies and take a break from the rush if you can. See you after Christmas...MJ

Hi all, we're slowly getting there! 232 kms this week and we are now in Orsha, Belarus. This city of 125,000 dates back to the 10th century- today it is a major junction on the railway systems linking Russia to western Europe. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, Orsha bacame a major religious centre with dozens of churches of all faiths. In 1630, a printing house was built at the Kuciejna Monastery, the first mass publisher of Cyrillic alphabet pieces. In 1941, the famous Katyusha rocket launchers of the Russian military were used here for the first time to rout the advancing German forces. Several guerilla groups operated here as well during the war, one group succeeded in bombing German supply trains 93 times in less than 3 months. Today, several of the old churches remain but more interesting is a chance to take in a bandy match. Bandy is a sport played on skates on a sheet of ice as large as a soccer pitch with rules similar to soccer- 11 players plus goalie using a stick to hit a small ball into the opposition's net. Sounds like fun to me! We are on our way to the capital city of Minsk...MJ

205 kms. We're heading west and have reached Vyazma, a town of 57,000 which through its turbulent history has served to protect the western approaches to Moscow. Today it is a major railway hub between Moscow, St.Petersburg to the north and Kaluga to the south. It's airport is home to the aviation squadron Vyazma Russ which flies Aero L-39 Albatros jets for the Russian military. During WWII it was occupied by the Germans until liberation in 1945- US war correspondent Quentin Reynolds in his book "The Curtain Rises" documents the destruction he found after the Germans were routed: a population of 60,000 had been reduced to 716 and only 3 buildings remained. Fortunately, one of those buildings was the Hodegetria church. Built in the 14th century this is one of three "tented" architecture structures in the world- definitely worth a visit. Have a good week...MJ

262 kms! We have to stop and take in the sights of Moscow before we head west to Belarus- this city of 10.5 million has the largest metropolitan area in Europe and is considered one of the world's mega cities. It is located on the banks of the Moskva River- 49 bridges link the city regions together in a series of ring roads.
ARCHITECTURE- every style is present from mundane cinder block apartments, Russian baroque like the fabulous multihued and onion domed St. Basil's Cathedral, skyscrapers from the Stalin era that resemble the Empire State Building, the famous Moscow Kremlin in Red Square that is the home of the Russian president to ultramodern buildings springing up on the outskirts. Moscow is an economic powerhouse- there are more billionaires per capita here than anywhere else in the world.
CULTURE- museums and art galleries galore- 93 theatres, 132 cinemas, and 24 major concert halls including the Bolshoi, home to the Russian Ballet. Two state circuses and the famous Moscow Zoo should also be enjoyed. For a dynamic night life and upscale shopping visit Tverskaya St.
SPORTS- everything from hockey to tennis, rugby, sailing and skiing.
TRANSPORTATION- streetcars, ring roads, 3 international airports, 9 major train terminals and the second largest subway system in the world (after Tokyo).
Find quiet time in one of the many beautiful parks- many feature sculpture and lakes. Beware of pickpockets- the downside of Moscow is its high crime rate, all that money has attracted the Russian mafia. I'm exhausted:)- think I'll head out to the country...MJ

262 kms and we have reached Tver, Russia, a city of 400,000 north of Moscow. Dating back to 1135 AD, Tver rivalled Moscow in wealth and political importance until Prince Ivan Kalita of Moscow had Mikhail of Tver assassinated by Mongol hordes. After the Great Fire in 1763, Catherine the Great rebuilt the city in the neoclassical style- it remained an important stop along the road between St. Petersburg and Moscow until occupied by the German Wehrmacht in 1941. In less than two months it was reduced to ashes and today the only remaining ancient monument is the White Trinity Church, built in 1564. Take in a football game or visit the state puppet theatre while here. Person of note from Tver is Ilya Kovalchuk, a player with the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers.
Next week we will be in Moscow, then turn west for a bit...MJ

Here we go- 200 kms and we are in Novgorod (New City). With a population of 220,000 it is the 4th largest city in Russia and dates back to the 8th century as a city of the Eastern Slavs. It played a major role as a link on the Baltic-Byzantium trading routes.
Sadly, during WWII the Nazis destroyed over 2500 historical buildings, when liberated by the Russian Army in 1944 only 40 original structures remained. Much has been restored or recreated but be sure to visit two of the original sites: St. Sophia Cathedral, built in 1045, is the oldest public structure in Russia still in use and features five brilliant blue onion domes atop white stone walls. It is filled with walls of Russian icons (religious paintings). Also go to the Novgorod Kremlin (walled city) and visit the oldest palace, bell tower and clock tower in all of Russia. Enjoy and keep those miles coming...MJ

We're on the homeward journey now- after 265 kms we have headed south into Russia and are just south of St. Petersburg in the city of Pushkin. With a population of 95,000, Pushkin dates to the 18th century when it was created by Catherine the Great as a summer residence of the Russian Tsars and their families. At that time it was named "Royal Village". Tsar Nicholas II lived in the Alexander Palace until 1917 when he and his family were taken to Tobolsk and assassinated. From that time until 1937 it became the "Children's Village" with many of the palaces being used as health care facilities for young people. In 1937 it was renamed Pushkin in honour of Alexander Pushkin, the great Russian poet who studied here at the Imperial Lyceum. Besides the Alexander Palace be sure to visit the district of Sophia with its Royal Cathedral built by Catherine and the Egyptian Gate, an elaborate entrance to the city covered with heiroglyphics and built in 1827 when a madness for anything Egyptian craze was happening in Europe. We are heading southeast towards Moscow- it will take time as this is a very big country...MJ

Hi all- it looks like a rest did us all good as our distances are gradually building. We managed to visit Helsinki, the capital of Finland and now find ourselves after 435 kms in Lappeenranta, a city of 70,000 in southeastern Finland just 30 kms from the Russian border. Queen Christina of Sweden declared the once market community a city in 1649. It borders Lake Saiman and the harbor offers cruises across the lake to Vyborg, Russia. Winter tourism is important here with snowmobiling, skiing and hockey enjoyed. Visit the central market place and enjoy a meal of meat pies- atomi (atom) or vety (hydrogen). If you're lucky take in a concert by one of the many local heavy metal bands or enjoy the annual Lappeenranta national Singing Festival. In the meantime, Happy Halloween!...MJ emoticon

Only 34.7 kilometres for me this week but I was sick for half of it so I don't feel too bad. Here's hoping the coming week will be better.

Have a good week, everyone and I'm off to enjoy St. Petersburg's architecture!

We managed 180 kms this week and as promised are in St. Petersburg, Russia. I can't begin to describe this incredible ancient city in this small space so I direct you to this link. www.geographia.com/russia/peter01.ht

Enjoy your week soaking in the culture and sights, rest and heal yourselves, save your mileage and report in on October 26. In the meantime, I'm off to spend an afternoon at The Hermitage...MJ emoticon

Sorry MJ and team, just when I start getting back into the groove, doc has asked me to take it easy, so my Km's are a bit week. Surgery in 2 weeks time. Then a month of taking it easy. I will get back into my walking routine as quickly as I can. I'll keep you posted. Walk extra hard for me. I'll be with you in spirit. LOL

Sounds interesting, MJ. I might have to do a similar challenge on my team. It must be fun looking all this stuff up and letting us know. If I need help, I definitely know who the expert is.

I did 48.4 kilometres this week and I'm looking forward to hearing about St. Petersburg. Is that the place with all the wonderful Russian architecture?

Hi gang- we are teetering on the border between Estonia and Russia after traveling 160 kms this week. The city of Narva sits on one side of the Narva River, on the other is the Russian city of Ivangorod. The border remains in dispute between the two countries despite Estonia gaining independence from Russia in 1991. Narva was first established by the Danes but throughout much of its history has been either part of Sweden or Russia. A magnificent landmark that escaped WWII bombing is Narva Castle, built in 1277. Across the river is Ivangorod Fortress, built by Prince Ivan III in 1492. Another undamaged landmark is Kreenholm Manufacture, once the largest cotton mill in all of Europe with a workforce of 10,000 at the end of the 19th century.
You will find inexpensive restaurants and pubs here serving continental fare and you can take in a football game or play a game of open air chess- several chess grand masters have hailed from this region. We are only 130kms from the prize of St. Petersburg- we'll stay there for a week and take in the sites while we all heal...MJ emoticon emoticon
