I, too, was confused by this "goodie" system SparkPeople has! But I've come to enjoy this totally sincere nutritional website, where no money or goods changes hands. The friendships are "virtual," those Goodie rewards are "virtual," but the information, the knowledge, and the community spirit are ALL so very tangible!
If you haven't explored the My Sparkpoints tab yet on your menu, you'll find all sorts of ways to earn Sparkpoints, which you can then turn into those virtual "goodies" for yourself or for others. You can earn Sparkpoints by reading informational articles/quizzes, and participating in the community. It's really an inspired way to get you involved in the SparkPeople system. While the virtual "goodies" are clever, I find the personal connections and suggestions people take the time to send so much more valuable.
I'm glad you're embracing the program!
I joined SP last June, and I'm still finding new things here and there around the website. So, give yourself time to explore and become comfortable with all of it!
