Haha!

That sounds great! My boyfriend just recently cleaned off our kitchen table and in the 3 years we have lived here we've eaten at the table once (on Monday) Sad isn't it? I would like to start making changes like yours, not only are you eating properly but you also spend more time with those you love and 'talk' because when you're in front of the tv you really don't have that so a lot can go unsaid.

As for me, today I have made up for the lack of exercise yesterday... I still have a lot of homework to work on but I've got the whole wknd so that helps. Food - I don't know what I'll have for supper yet, but I think I will eat healthy and not go over any of my groups!

Thanks for the reminder, Amanda! I just kind of get into a responding mode when I am busy and forget what the purpose of the thread is.

I have been doing fabulously! I still eat only 1 meal (if that) in front of the tv per week. It has made a huge difference in my progress. I have lost 5.6 pounds in the last 2 weeks and am finally down below the point where I have been "stuck" for a long time. In addition, my thinking is changing. I no longer sit down and night and begin wondering what I can 'Have'. I am really enjoying my cup of tea and my thoughts aren't wandering to food, which I am really thrilled about!

Hmm, I feel like not everyone is sharing their January goals lately... Tsk tsk!

Today I think I ate relatively well but I did go over in sodium again and haven't eaten enough protein. I will work on this tomorrow, it should be easier as I will be at school ALL day so I will need to plan accordingly.

I want to exercise but I don't really have the time today. I am swamped with homework I feel as though I am falling behind so I am using today as a catchup day. I will work extra hard tomorrow!

I hope you're all doing well!

Sally its funny that you have had a back mishap, because I did something last night to my back and man it hurts! My story isn't as terrible as yours is though!

Despite the pain I'm going to try to get in some moderate exercising just to say that I did something today. I hope tomorrow it feels a little better and I can get more in. As for food, I went over in fat and sodium today. I'm not going to cry over it we're all only human, but tomorrow I'm going to try and be more careful!

Sorry I haven't been on in a little while... Going through some stuff right now.

Sally, my dear Sally! I can be like you when I feel like something is going to be great and then end up utterly disappointed! Think of it this way. IF you know you've been doing well, and you're expecting a huge loss fine. But if you don't see the results you want to see, just go with it and continue to do well because you know that those lbs will come off the next week.

I think its better to lose a little at a time constantly every week then have 1 huge loss, and then nothing for awhile. Before eating your disappointment away think about that first!

Sally,

We have all been there. I'm so glad you got up and brushed it off this morning. It's the only positive thing we can do. The good part of these slides for me has been that over time I have learned more and more about myself and my behavior. We are all works-in-progress and the best we can do is just keep on keepin'on.

Jen

I should never have weighed yesterday because I blew the entire day off because of it...I'm so upset with myself I could just scream. Even as I ate my third mini cream puff I knew what I was doing and couldn't talk myself out of it...POP into the mouth it went. Why not eat those 10 Munchos that are left in the bag...POP into my mouth they went...4 cokes? Why not?

I'm back to myself today and have eaten breakfast 341 calories and 17.5 grams of fiber...After I finish on Spark it's off to my stationary bike.

Yesterday, BEFORE I totally blew it, I went to the store and got my oldest son a new winter coat and we have made a pact that any day it's over 32 degrees outside we are taking a walk together. It's not going to be easy to get a 14 year old boy to walk with his mom in public but I'm determined. I only wish I could get the younger son out there with us (he's a bit of a hermit at 13.......wants very little to do with me in public).

Sally, I hope you enjoy your WiiFit. Sorry about the disappointing scale results. I know how that feels. Just don't let it get you down. We can't control the numbers on the scale, only our own behavior. Hugs to you!

Jen: I'm looking forward to a great workout today too. I'm going to use the WiiFit for the first time in awhile and I'm getting on that bike.

I got on the scale today (a day early) because I knew I was going to have a big loss. Very disappointed with the 1.3 pound loss that was actually there. emoticon emoticon

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about any loss but I really was expecting more.

Just wanted to update everyone :

1) I have food again!
2) I have batteries for my Wii...

Tomorrow I'm going to get back into the exercise, oh and I walked to the grocery store. It's not too far, I had to cab back due to all the foods I bought but I still walked so that's something. emoticon

I started this thread last August, but wrote the blog 1 1/2 years prior to that. When I need a push, it helps me. I thought it might help you, too:

I wrote the following information a year and a half ago. I found it this morning and realized how appropriate it is for me once again. I know that many of you are struggling right now and hoped that it might provide you with some inspiration:

This month has been a tough one for me. I felt overwhelmed with life and wanted to lie down on the couch and eat my troubles away. In fact, I did that for a little while and quickly gained 5 pounds. Instead of letting that slip turn into a free fall, I thought about all the weight I have lost and all the good things I have gained during the past couple of years. Here is what I did mentally to turn things around:

1. I knew from past experience that the first few days would be the hardest. By day 3 or 4 it would be pretty easy again.

2. I knew that once I was eating properly again and exercising, I would feel much better both physically and emotionally.

3. I focused on how good it feels to buy clothes in a size 12, rather than a size 22.

4. I thought about how difficult simple daily tasks used to be for me; for example tying my shoes used to be an effort.

5. I remembered how tired I used to feel, and how I could easily have napped every afternoon. (I can't sleep during the day now, even when I try.)

6. Instead of pulling away, I shared my feelings with my Spark friends and allowed them to offer their support and encouragement to me.

7. I believed in myself. I knew that I could do this if only I tried.

This past week, I lost 4 of the 5 pounds I gained. I did not starve myself, I simply stayed committed to my program.

It works for me. It can work for you, too. You can do this!

We all have our down days. It happens, but the key to continued success is to not STAY down. The only way we are going to change our lives is to continue to get back up every time we slip --- every time we fall --- no matter what. We must stop giving ourselves negative messages that allow us to continue to gain weight, eat poorly, remain on the couch, ignore our health and die early. We have to grab onto the good in ourselves and live fully. Come here anytime, but especially when you need a reminder of WHY you are here. YOU ARE WORTH THIS!

You all matter to me.............. emoticon Jen

Jen: That is a wonderful price! One of the reasons I've been putting off getting them is that they're so expensive.

Lux: Don't give up, we're here for you. I, too, gained and it makes me so angry with myself especially because I have so much to lose. I should be dropping the weight off but my body just loves hanging on to the fat. Honestly, I don't eat as I should and I know it.

Sorry I haven't been stopping by. In the midst of losing momentum and somewhat at the verge of wanting to quit. I know deep down I don't want to quit but sometimes I feel that this journey is too hard, and I want the easy way out. When I saw that I gained a lb yesterday my heart kinda sunk, but I also know that I've been feeding my temptations rather then ignoring them and then ignoring them when I enter in my food in the tracker.

I'm trying to get back into the positive, I am hoping next week this phase dwindles and I will want to get back at it! Jen good for you with the exercise, I saw your blog and you are a role model that I should follow!

I do, Sally. I don't know what it is, but I like them a lot better than weights. I got a set of 3 (5, 10 & 15 pounds for $24) That was the best deal I have seen on them.

Sally I'm glad you got 10 minutes in its better then nothing. Today I'm still feeling blah, I hope the weekend will recharge me and my motivation! Nancy I read your blog and I'm very proud of the wise decisions you have been making!

I did get on the bike today after work but only for 10 minutes but it was something. I really didn't want to and then I thought of all of you...

I don't even want to think about snow...I'm loving the mild weather and would do just fine if it never snowed again - ever. We're supposed to get that storm that Nancy's dealing with tonight/tomorrow morning.

Amanda - I hope you're not speaking too soon about the snow. There's plenty of winter left! It was in the 40's yesterday and only in the 20's today. It's been snowing off and on all day and it supposed to continue. We're only supposed to get a total of 4 inches but it's blowing. I left work early today so I could get home before dark.

Sally get your ass in gear!! Though I shouldn't talk, I've done rather well all week but my wii remote just died and I can't get batteries till next week. I hope I can find something to help me sweat for the time being. There is no room in my cpu room so I can't in here :(

I'm surprised we haven't had much snow yet! I live in Canada and it has been a very mild winter. I'm not even sure were going to get anymore. I think it's only snowed twice this year. If you didn't believe in global warming before you better start!

As for suggestions... I'm not very good at this sort of thing. I feel it needs to be something motivating to get the whole team involved, but I can't really think of anything off hand. I will think on it the next couple of days and if something comes to me I will let you know. (Just know that I'm not very creative)

Amanda – If I have cereal and milk for breakfast I try to have a banana too. Cereal just doesn’t keep me full.

Sally – It’s good to hear from you again. I hate it when work gets in the way of my Spark time! What kind of a challenge are you looking for? I always like the climb mountains or buildings if you’re looking for an exercise challenge.

Jen – You’re right, it’s important to just keep getting back up.

We’re getting snow today. They’re calling for a couple of inches today and a couple more tomorrow with high winds. It could be an interesting ride home tonight. If it keeps it up I may leave early so I can get home before dark. I live in a small town about 20-30 minutes from my office. My husband is driving 5-6 hours through this to get home tonight. I know he’s a good driver but I still worry about him.

Hi Everyone!

It's good to see so many hanging in here and sticking with our goals. Even when we slip, getting right back up instead of staying down is so important.

Have a great day!

No, no, I'm here. I've been reading the posts daily. I just haven't had the time to sit and chat back. . . this working thing takes a lot out of you. lol

I'm glad to see that everyone is staying on track with their goals. I haven't gotten on the bike in 2 days and I promise myself I'm on it today after work. I've been doing pretty good with the freggies.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions for a challenge next month? I realize I'm asking early but I'm like to plan ahead.

Jen we all have momentarry lapses like that sometimes but I am glad for you and your daughter that something was said. Though I do believe you would have remembered as you were sitting there feeling like something wasn't quite right. emoticon

Nancy, I do the same thing and it does work out easier that way or I have fruit with breakfast and I tend to stay fuller longer throughout the day.

Anyone know what happened to Sally? I fear we haven't heard from her in awhile...

Jen - That's great that your daughter helped you stick to your goals.

I've been getting in my 30 minutes of exercise and most days I'm getting my 5 servings for fruits/veggies. I've been having fruit as my 2 snacks so I only have to get in 3 veggies with lunch and dinner. It's pretty easy that way.

I am staying strong with my plan, though last night I didn't have dinner until late and I was eating alone. I gathered my plate and headed right to the sofa. Fortunately, my daughter questioned me about it so before I could put a bite into my mouth, I moved to the table. I just wasn't tuned in at that moment. Good save for my daughter!

Amanda - You are doing so great! If I remember right the last time I quit I either gave up coffee or added flavored creamer to it. Morning was the worst time for me with my coffee. Keep up the great work!

I think for people who have cancer is different, but perhaps not all. I have a friend who was diagnosed with lung cancer and the doctor said it didn't matter if she quit or not that either way she had a year left to live. She said screw it and continued smoking because it didn't make a difference. 2.5 yrs later she's still kicking :)

As for the cucumber and apples, I don't really notice a difference unless it changes the taste for those who are still currently smoking. I haven't had one since the last day of December. It is going okay for me but I can tell you I had apples and cucumbers today and I felt like today was one of my worse craving days ever! So not sure tho you are right about the coffee and alcohol. I'm beginning to get over the coffee feeling tho probably because I need it so!

I didn't know about the apples and cucumbers either...where were they 16 years ago when I quit?

By the way, Lux, how's the no smoking going?

My best friend's husband was recently diagnosed with 3rd stage throat cancer. Had to have a hole cut in his neck and everything...2 days out of the hospital after the surgery, he tried to have a cigarette. He couldn't do it so he's now quit but my best friend is still smoking. Scary! He's going through chemo & radiation right now. I'm surprised she's not getting it having to see it everyday.

Amanda – I hope you’re feeling better soon. Great job on not munching and getting in your workout! I like both the EA Active 2 and Jillian’s games for the Wii. The Jillian game lets you set up a workout schedule or you can just pick what exercises to do. You have options of a 2 different full body circuits, abs, upper, or lower body. I think it’s a good workout but not as strenuous as the 30 Day Shred. The EA Active 2 is fun too because you can set up a schedule and you can choose the level you want, from easy to hard. There’s a 3 week or a 9 week schedule. I was thinking of you tonight. I tape “The Doctors” and they were talking about weight loss and quitting smoking. They said if you eat things like apples and cucumbers it will make the cravings for cigarettes go away because they make the cigarettes taste bad. But coffee and alcohol intensify the cravings. I know that I always wanted to smoke more with I had coffee or alcohol, but didn’t know about the healthy foods making you want to smoke less.

Thanks all!

Not really sure what's been wrong with me lately. Every now and then I feel as though something is coming on and then as soon as it comes its gone. Yesterday reason why I didn't exercise was because I felt weak all day. Shaky and kinda on edge it went away late last night... I'm not complaining just find it odd.

Today I ate well, no munching (tho I had little time for that) and I just finished a 30 minute exercise on the Wii fit. Keep it up everyone!

Ps. Nancy how is that game for the wii? I only have 2 games so I'm always looking to hear about others.

Sally – Great job!

Amanda – I’m so sorry that you weren’t feeling well yesterday. I hope that a good night’s sleep helped and you’re doing okay today.

I did great on the exercise part of my challenge today! I changed my workout routine and got in an hour this morning before work! I'm doing my EA Active 2 and Jillian games for the Wii Fit, making sure I get in 30 minutes cardio, and Bob Greene's Body Makeover DVD. I feel great! Of course, I'll probably crash later today. I got up at 4:30 to get my husband off on his weekly trip!

Haha! I bet your butt is sore! I also use tea as a snack but I love it... I guess it's just one of those things.

I will not be exercising today, I feel like crap not really sick just a weak and dizzy sort of feeling so I'm taking it easy. I'm getting worried because tomorrow is my first day of school and I want to be okay. Ill probably just go to bed early and this will pass.

Talk to you guys tomorrow :)

Jen – I’m glad you’re being so successful with your goal! I think I’m going to start making tea my nighttime snack too.

Sandy – I’m not a big fan of plain green tea but I do like the fruit flavored ones.

I haven’t done very good with getting in my fruits and veggies. Yesterday I only had 2 servings and so far today I’ve had a banana. I’m going to have to do a better job of planning my means and snacks to include fruits and veggies.

Point taken about the money.

I have tried green tea repeatedly and, in fact, have bought some more and have yet to try it again. Plus a herbal fruit blend a few months back but I can't remember the fruit or the herbs lol

Sally,

I have been a very occasional tea drinker, but suddenly it is tasting good to me. I also decided to spend the money and try new kinds. I figured I wouldn't have hesitated to spend the money on ice cream and junk food a few years back!

I am still going strong with eating at the table. It feels less weird to me and I am loving the results. I don't sit down at night and wonder, What can I have to eat?" That is the question that frequently leads me into trouble. Sometimes I would eat a portioned, healthy snack and sometimes I would graze myself into oblivion. Now I don't ask the question. I just make myself a cup of tea. I bought two new tea varieties yesterday and am excited to try them. (Imagine that -- excitement about tea as a snack!) emoticon

Amanda,

Adding exercise to your goals is a great idea. Four years ago, it was a workout for me to do a loop on the paved trail at our local park (.8 mile). Now I routinely go on hiking trips with my best friend and do 10+ wilderness trails (and lack of trails) with no problem. It feels absolutely incredible to take deep breaths and feel the air deep down in my lungs. I love it! emoticon

You are doing great!

Good job everyone!

I just realized that quitting smoking isn't really exercise or nutrition related. Though it will still be my main goal I'm going to add another one.

Goal 3: Get some kind of exercise in everyday! I'm beginning school on Monday and I'm worried that now I have a life that I won't be able to get my exercise in, so I will strive for it and hopefully maintain it all.

Jen – You’re doing great! Maybe I should make that one of my goals, I think it would make me eat less.

Sally – Great job!

Amanda – I’m glad it’s getting easier for you already. It will get easier each day.

I didn’t get in my 5 freggies yesterday and my exercise was cleaning the house. I still logged it as I was working fast and worked up a sweat. Today I have 2 fruits packed for my snacks and 1 veggie for lunch. I’ll have a salad and one more veggie with dinner to be sure I meet that goal. It’s another beautiful day out so I’m going walking at lunch. My exercise time this morning was finishing up the cleaning.

Yes, Amanda, I eat everything at the table -- snacks and all. And I definitely am eating less. It is becoming more about hunger and physical need and way less about pleasure. I am thrilled to be developing this new habit!

Sally/Nancy/Jen - I thank you all so much for your support it has really been helping me. Today is my 5th day and its starting to come a little bit easier (Except my patience) but I guess that's to be expected.

Sally - Keep biking and eating those tasty things that are good for you :) You know you will only be wasting your money if you do not get your bum on that bike!

Nancy - Great job, sounds like this is coming easy for you!

Jen - That is a great idea eating at the table. Unfortunately my table is covered in junk and I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to inch my way that way or not. Do you eat your snacks there as well? I bet you would eat less, its boring lol I guess that's the point though.

Everyone is doing so great.

I've been on that darn bike every night since this challenge started (whether I wanted to be there or not). I've also been getting in my freggies with each meal.

Sounds like we all have the same smoking story...drinking + smoking...very hard to do the drinking without the smoking.

I am on Day 3 of not eating in front of the tv and it is working just as I expected ............... I am eating LESS because of this change. If I make myself sit down at the table to eat, even if someone has the tv on in the family room, I don't want to stay at the table in order to get the food. I am much happier to take a cup of tea into the family room and join them!

Amanda – I’m so proud of your for not smoking last night when you were out drinking! That’s quite an accomplishment! Try munching on healthy things if you feel the need to munch.

Jen – We have similar stories. I started smoking when I was 16 because it was the “cool” thing to do. I smoked off and on until I was 35 and then my husband and I both quit. We started again when we were out drinking with friends. We found ourselves going out to drink just so we could smoke and then started smoking at home. It’s been 2 years since I had one and I’m never going back again.

I’m meeting my goals so far. I’ve been getting in at least 30 minutes of exercise and 5 servings of fruits and veggies. I still need one more serving today. I bought some oranges tonight and will have one later as a snack.

Thanks Jen, your story is amazing and I'm surprised you hid it for so long... It must've been killing you to keep it.

Well I lied in my below post. Said I wasn't going to go out with my friend to the 'bar' scene, well I did. After 3 pints of beer man did I want one! But alas I did not, my boyfriend was very surprised, especially because my best friend is a chain smoker. I wanted to and I didn't.

As for my 2nd goal, I didn't do so well... The drinking and the urge to smoke made me put more and more food up to my mouth last night so I didn't do so well there, but 1/2 isn't all that bad!

Keep it up to everyone who is reaching their goal! You can do it!

I survived Day 1 of my challenge. Here's to a successful Day 2!

Luxxita, If you accomplish your goal, you will be giving yourself an incredible gift! I began smoking in college. I smoked for 10 years and gave it up a few months before I became pregnant with my first son. I didn't touch another cigarette for nearly 10 more years, but in a moment of alcohol-induced weakness, I asked my best friend for a cigarette (thinking that I could smoke just one). The next day, all I could think about was having another cigarette. That started a new decade of smoking in "secret". I didn't smoke at home around my family, but I smoked with friends when I was at their homes or out. (I had 3 close friends who smoked at that time). Like all secrets, it eventually slipped out when my daughter found cigarettes in my purse and I had to come clean. For her 13th birthday, I gave them up. (This was as I was losing weight, too.) It was a tribute to my kids that I wanted to be a good example to them and to live a full life.

That was almost 4 1/2 years ago and I no longer want anything to do with them. The cravings are completely gone and have been for a long time. I love having lung capacity and feeling free of a terrible addiction. Now two of my closest friends have also given them up so I have only one good friend who still smokes. It no longer holds a power over me and doesn't bother me to be around her.

I wish you the very best with this. It is so worth the struggle!

Welcome back Gnabnshape, thought you gave up emoticon I'm glad you didn't.

Goal 1 - No smoking (My new years resolution was to quit on the 1st and I haven't had one since.

Goal 2 - Watch my munchies intake. Due to quitting smoking I feel I must replace one bad habit with another.

I would like to mention that I did not go out tonight with my best friend who I won't get to see soon cause she's going back home to Montreal because I know if I'm with her drinking beer in a pub like atmosphere then I will smoke, and the fact that she smokes makes it harder. I told her maybe Thursday when I will feel a more of a grasp on things.

Good luck everyone!

I am going to stop eating in front of the tv. I am allowed only one meal per week in front of the tv.

Sorry I'm late with this challenge.

This month we are going to challenge ourselves...pick a goal that you want to achieve and post here daily and let us know how you're doing.
--------
Goal #1: I traded my elliptical, that I wasn't using, for a stationary bike. I plan to ride that bike everyday this month for at least 10 minutes.

Goal #2: I am going to add a fruit and/or vege with each meal I eat.
