Dual purpose kitchen towel holder and keep cat out of the lower cabinets device.

I used to just put the edge of the kitchen towel on the cabinet door and close the door so the towel hung down in front. My bigger cat started taking advantage of the tiny gap that creates in the cabinet door to open the door and go roaming about inside. I don't want cat hair in my pots and pans, nor do I want to fish a cat out from behind the stove or refrigerator since the cabinet backs are open to that area.

I stretched a thick rubberband between the two cabinet door handles and wrapped it around one handle to get the proper tension. The towel hangs over the rubber band and there is still enough give for me to open the door to get my dish soap or small items, or I can remove one side of the rubber band to open it fully. The tension is just enough to discourage the cat who moves on to other easier pursuits to conquer.

While cleaning out my shed, I was looking for a way to hold all the long handled tools like rakes, shovels, etc. I found a couple online that were too pricey for me, so I made my own.

Here is a picture of the result:

ry_enlarge.asp?id=4836398

This was an old garbage can with mismatched lid that was getting holes on the bottom. I put some broken patio blocks (more trash recycled) in the bottom to weigh it down, and used a keyhole saw on my drill cut make seven holes in the top, then drilled two small holes near the handles to zip tie the top to bottom for stability. I am thinking I may want to put some smaller holes in it for hand tools. It really saves a lot of space and has kept thing sorganized in there.

But add Dawn dishwashing liquid to the vinegar---it sticks better to the plant---and you will have to reapply after rain when you see weeds again. But I saw a whole lot less weeds come back.

I just was reading that you can kill weeds with vinegar instead of buying Round Up. I also use vinegar as a disinfectant, window cleaner, fabric softener in the rinse cycle, and to clean lime scale from appliances.

I love the idea of the Maybe box, taping it, dating it and putting away for 6 mths. That's the one that always gets me. I'm a big recycler and repurposing so too much stuff is saved for 'future' reuse. However, it did work in my favour when I was camperizing my van. I made use of so many things that I had picked up at thrift stores or yard sales that were never used but worked perfectly in the van. Now, I just don't go to yard sales. Barb

Oh,I do so agree with you. That's why instead of putting the total weight I want to lose on my Wt. Tracker, I have broken it down to be more manageable and not so overwhelming. Of course it confuses other people, but sorry I can't help that. I have to do what is right for me.

Meant to say that I love the idea of the different bins. I just used one before - for discard - and then I'd go into overload putting stuff back and getting thoroughly confused because who knows about the future and the way I was doing it, I was trying to predict mine. Ho, ho, ho!

Such great advice! I used to use my body as an indicator as to when to stop and take a rest. Now I like your idea about a timer better! Ha! I knew that timer would come in handy one day - not just for cooking!

Yes, concentrating on just one area is much easier. I would start making lists in my mind that completely drained me of any incentive. And there I would be, stuck again! It also reflected in my choices for food - like eating starches, sugars, etc.

I just wrote a blog about what turned me around and I find it so helpful in my case because I have to get things bottom line first and then work from there.

All your hints are most helpful and will keep me on the right road. Thanks much!!!

Helen, you need to not look at the whole picture but start in a small area. Pick a shelf, a drawer, a corner and start with that. Set a timer so you don't feel overwhelmed--and walk away when it goes off---you can always go back to it after you take a break. Create a keep box, a donation box, a trash box, and a maybe box---but try not to put too much in the maybe one. Once you fill that donation box, take it right out to your car and drop it off next time you are out. Once that maybe box is filled, seal it, put a date on it--and say, 6 months from now, go back to it--if you really have not needed anything in that box, you know you can get rid of it. Hope these ideas help!

Jules and Lecates,

Thank you so much for the responses. I have bee a little out of pocket this past week and am just now catching up. Leather furniture is on my "next big purchase" list. In the meantime I do wear a madk whenever I clean or garden.

The DIY site was helpful. I have a Kirby vacuum with attachement for cleaning upholstered furniture that I will need to get out more frequently!
Thanks again!

Gail, surprised you don't have more leather furniture, think that would be healthier for you. One suggestion is to wear a face mask when cleaning that furniture---actually, any cleaning that stirs up dust.

Here's a link for a DIY Upholstery cleaner. I suppose you could buy a cheap hand held steam cleaner if you didn't want to go the "elbow grease" way. Are you talking cloth upholstery or a leather or leatherette upholstery? I like the idea of having rugs etc on the "used" parts of the upholstery during the week and washing them to help keep clean the furniture.

I've found the 6 mth cycle doesn't work especially when there are 4 seasons. I would always be looking for something that went bye-bye. 2 years works more for me and I saved lots of money remaking or using those bits of things. The trick is to know when. Now, to clear up the clutter, it is one new thing in, then 1 - 2 things out.

ZAMORAPAT I looked it up and found out that you clean faux stone fireplaces with shaving cream. Scrub with the shaving foam and then rinse. For the grout use undiluted white vinegar and a toothbrush. Apparently elbow grease is the only thing for this, unless you paint the grout.

Hope this helps emoticon

One thing that helps me when I'm feeling overwhelmed is to set a timer for 10-15 minutes. I'll do what I can I'm that time, then move on to something else. This works well with kids rooms and folding laundry (jobs I hate) as well as with decluttering projects.

As an added bonus, I find myself trying to "beat the clock" and get more done than I would have otherwise!

Boy I can use these tips!
I am a procrastinator and put things off because when I actually do get around to cleaning stuff out, I am not sure how to do it. What to keep, what to donate, what I may need or not ever need again?!??!! UGH!

But I am going to check out the tips and info and get my rear in gear! And get something done!
Thanks! emoticon

Closet cleaning---we all know how difficult it can be to figure out whether to keep something or not--here's a simple help---take everything out of your closet---rehang everything the opposite way that you usually do(after you do a sort of what fits, doesn't fit, hate)---as you wear them, put them back in the normal way---set a time limit---say 6 months---if you haven't worn something in that time period, you know you can get rid of it---you can tell as those hangers will still be in there backwards.
