I am the co-leader of our local Girl Scouts troop and want to share an idea with the rest of you to help get your kids active. I am in charge of the Daisies, who are kindergarten and first graders.
The girls have all been wanting a patch that they could work on independently at home. After sifting through numerous options, I settled on the Shape Up! patch.
The Shape Up! patch is a 12-week program with two parts: Get Movin' and Eat Right. For the Get Movin' portion, the girls have to do at least 30 minutes of physical activities 3 times each week or more. They also have a chart they have to use to log what kind of activities they participated in. For the Eat Right portion, they have to log what kind of foods they eat/drink each day from 3 different categories: Veggies, Fruits and Natural Fruit Juices, and Milk and other Dairy Products.
If the girls complete the 12-week program successfully, they each earn the Shape Up! patch.
Now I know that you may or may not have girls or Girl Scouts, but this is something you could implement with your own children and offer a special reward at the end. If anyone is interested in the easy-to-use spreadsheets I created for my Daisies to do their logging on, feel free to message me and send me your email address.
