Frozen mango (great in fruit salads, makes easy smoothies, and my daughter eats it straight out of the freezer!)
Bananas (also good sliced and frozen)
Tuna
Eggs
Oatmeal
Broccoli
Berries
Salad/Lettuce - depending on which is cheaper that week

PS. Corn is a starch, not a vegetable. :)

I am glad that I clicked on to this discussion. I go shopping every other week but now that we have another addition to the family (3 girls now 10, 2 and 3 months)grocery shopping is even more of a chore emoticon !!!! So I decided that I am just going to go bulk shopping once a month. However, I am tired of having the same ole, same ole all of the time. So i appreciate the suggestions.

I also really like the suggestion of doing the perimeter of the store as that is where the healthy items are. Thanks for the advice and I am going to continue to check this message post for more advice.

Breyer Free - they make outstanding fat free ice cream
Tomatoes - we can't live without them
Apples - ditto
As many other fresh fruits and veggies as I can afford and as many of them from the farmer's market as I can get!
Almonds and Special K Protein Water Mixes - these have become very important as we train to walk the half marathon in Feb. I'm a work-outside-the-home Mom and we get hungry on our busy skedule and need quick fixes to get us through while we make dinner or walk the long walks on the weekends.....
And because our 21 year old stick-built son has moved back in - I'm suddenly buying things with lots of fat in them....He's 6'1" and 135 pounds

Hey all the sudden I'm having fun. I try not to worry about things I can't control, but I can control what I eat and whether I surrender and sit still or whether I get up and GO

The one thing the Kids have to have weekly is Corn. They love corn. I wish they would eat other veggies and much as they eat corn.

They consider corn dessert, LOL.

Some others:
Salsa
Wheat bread
Low-F Cottage Cheese
Low-Fat yogurt
Eggs
Dried Beans

My daughter and I went grocery shopping last night. Our trick is to walk the perimeter of the store and avoid the isles as much as possible. We only go down the isles for pasta, the baking isle, and the coffee and tea isles. It is a goal that we do not always meet but is something to strive for. Usually the healthiest, less processed food choices are on the perimeter.

I am getting ready to go grocery shopping this weekend, so this list idea will come in handy. I like to see what others are buying and using in their helathy lifestyle. It gives me some new ideas to expand my cupboards.

i've been reading about people going to farmers markets, so when i was in a pinch for dinner last night i decided to pick up fresh veges and make a salad. took my daughter to a farmers market (both out 1st time). it was cute. i let her pick out the veges, and we cut then together. great idea. but i must admit, lived in town too much, i did not like the veges as much as i like the store bought. funny.

I like the idea of making up cookie dough ahead of time. I've read that before but never real thought about it again, but it's perfect for lunches. Thanks...

MOM2BRITTANY - thats exactly what we do for snacks as well. If the kids want cookies, brownies, cake whatever I'll make them from scratch. The only thing I still buy in the box is pudding mixes, that I would love to figure out how to make a good homemade chocolate pudding. If we buy ice cream, its Breyers and Breyers only and I hope I spelled that correctly! Once in awhile and I'm talking once in a blue moon they'll ask for a package of Oreo's and I'll get them but they end up going stale and they complain that they taste funny to them or they'll complain about the film that is left on their teeth or the top of their mouth...but that is like once a year thing maybe twice a year I'll do that. I'm making up cookie dough right now and just getting into individual balls and putting into the freezer then I can bake them for their school lunches!! easy as pie!

variety fruits/veggies
chicken breasts
lean beef/pork
brown rice
kashi cereals
oatmeal
triscuits
low fat cheese, yogurt (no hfcs)
skim milk and 2%
frozen veggies

Then we usually plan on a few "dessert" recipes for the week, anything from cake to brownies to cookies, or sometimes ice cream. We cook from scratch and we found the kid's don't complain about the lack of junky snacks around the house, so I buy ingredients necessary for these. Sometimes we buy some packaged snacks but same as someone else ssaid, no hfcs and low sugar.

lucky to live by one of the BEST farmers' market around, so there we buy:

organic fruits & veggies
pastured chicken, eggs, beef (or bison)

from the store:
organic milk, butter, yogurt, ice cream, tofu
whole grain cereals, breads
organic canned tomatoes & paste
pasta

plus ONE "snicky-snack" from the store per week - cookies, chips, etc. - kids' choice, must be free of hfcs and preservatives and not come in individual packages.

wow, i sound like a witch.... but it works for us.

So Since we are all here to live healthier lives and make our families and kids healthier too what are your Grocery List Essentials? Meaning, what items do you always make sure you have stocked up in your house so that you and your family can live as healthy as possible?
